The Tampa Bay Rays knew Wil Myers had the talent to play regularly at the major league level, but they simply were waiting for the perfect time to make him a part of the everyday lineup.

One of baseball's top prospects, Myers will make his big league debut as the struggling Rays face the first-place Boston Red Sox in a day-night doubleheader at Fenway Park on Tuesday.

Tampa Bay (36-33) dropped six of the final eight on its 10-game homestand, including two losses to Boston and three of four to Kansas City after Sunday's 5-3 defeat.

With the offense averaging 2.4 runs over the last five, the Rays decided it was time for Myers, rated by some as baseball's top prospect, to join the club.

The outfielder hit .354 with 10 homers and 32 RBIs over his last 23 games in Triple-A, though manager Joe Maddon isn't expecting Myers to live up to the lofty expectations immediately upon his arrival.

"We'll probably hit him lower in the batting order to begin, just to take a little pressure off of him,' Maddon said. "We'll try not to place the expectations too high, although I know it's going to come from outside, not from within."

Maddon just wants Myers, acquired in the December trade that sent James Shields to Kansas City, to focus on the basics.

"I want him to play. I want him to be a Ray," Maddon said. "I want him to run hard to first base. I want him to try to do the right things on the field, continue to work on his defense, try to improve his baserunning."

The Rays are among the major league leaders with runners in scoring position at .294, though they've hit just .141 in those moments while losing seven of nine to the Red Sox this season.

Boston (42-29) will be looking to get back on track as well after dropping three of four at Baltimore over the weekend, including Sunday's 6-3 defeat as Dustin Pedroia and Shane Victorino each sat out to get some extra rest.

The Red Sox lead the AL East, though the fourth-place Rays are just five games back.

"This is going to be a very highly competitive division throughout the course of the summer," Red Sox manager John Farrell told the team's official website.

Boston, which swept Tampa from April 13-15 at Fenway, will turn to Felix Doubront in Game 1 of the doubleheader.

Doubront (4-3, 4.91 ERA) had a rough outing Thursday, giving up four runs while throwing 103 pitches in 4 2-3 innings of Boston's 5-4, 13-inning loss to Baltimore.

The left-hander struck out seven while allowing two runs in five innings of the Red Sox's 4-3 win over Tampa Bay on May 16, and is 2-1 with a 3.95 ERA in five career starts versus the Rays.

He'll be opposed by Chris Archer, who looks for a more efficient outing versus Boston this time around.

Archer (1-2, 4.80) was recalled from the minors June 1 and has made three starts. He allowed two runs, striking out seven and walking four, while tossing 103 pitches in just four innings of Wednesday's 2-1 loss to the Red Sox.

The right-hander faced Boston once last season as well, giving up three runs in five innings of a 13-3 win Sept. 19.

Alfredo Aceves (3-1, 5.58) will take the mound for the Red Sox in Game 2. He returned from another stint in the minors to oppose Archer on Wednesday, allowing one run - a solo homer to Evan Longoria, who had gone 0 for 9 previously in their matchups - in six innings and picking up the victory.

It marked the right-hander's first start versus Tampa Bay after going 2-1 with three saves and a 2.39 ERA in 19 relief appearances.

Opposing Aceves is Jake Odorizzi (0-0, 8.03), who came over with Myers in the Shields deal. The right-hander will be making his third start after giving up two runs in 3 1-3 innings of relief in Tampa's 10-1 loss to Kansas City on Thursday.

Odorizzi is 0-1 with a 7.16 ERA in four career starts.

Rain delayed the opener of a five-game series between the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets by three and a half hours.

It could wreak similar havoc on Tuesday's scheduled doubleheader, as the forecast calls for scattered thunderstorms all day long with a 60 percent chance of precipitation.

If the rain stays away, this twinbill offers a tempting look at the Mets' future. They send 24-year-old Matt Harvey (5-1, 2.04 ERA) to the mound in the first game followed by 23-year-old Zack Wheeler making his major league debut in the nightcap.

Harvey has dipped slightly since jumping out to a 5-0 record in his first nine starts while holding opposing hitters to a .149 average. In his last five starts, opponents are batting .277 against him as the Mets (25-40) have gone 1-4. The right-hander hasn't won win since May 17 and is coming off his first loss of the season Thursday against St. Louis, even though he allowed one run in seven innings of a 2-1 defeat.

"He's as good as you're going to face in the big leagues," Cardinals infielder Matt Carpenter said. "He's got electric stuff."

Harvey would get most of the headlines Tuesday if not for the debut of Wheeler, the sixth overall pick in the 2009 draft. He was dealt to New York in 2011 as part of the trade that sent Carlos Beltran to San Francisco.

"I know it's going to be a big moment in my life," Wheeler said. "There's probably going to be some nerves."

He posted a 3.93 ERA in 13 starts for Triple-A Las Vegas this year, highlighted by 73 strikeouts in 68 2-3 innings.

Wheeler is not the only pitcher marking a first, however.

The Braves (42-28) will give Alex Wood (0-0, 3.52) his first start in the major leagues in the afternoon game. The 22-year-old Wood has yet to throw more than 36 pitches or two innings in six relief outings. He has struck out nine batters over 7 2-3 innings and opposing batters are hitting .185 off the left-hander.

While the early game will feature two young pitchers, the night contest includes a matchup between one man making his first start and one making his 231st in Paul Maholm (7-5, 3.65).

The left-hander has been a little shaky of late, allowing a homer in four straight starts while going 1-1 with a 4.32 ERA. Most recently, he tied a season high with three walks against San Diego, as he allowed five runs and seven hits in 5 2-3 innings of a 5-3 defeat Wednesday.

Maholm has plenty of experience against the Mets, with a 6-3 lifetime record and 3.58 ERA. He has held them scoreless for 22 1-3 straight innings, including a three-hitter Aug. 10.

He faces a New York team averaging 2.6 runs in its last nine games. The Mets, losers of 11 of 14, rank last in the major leagues with 42 runs in June.

Though the emphasis will be on the mound Tuesday, Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman was the story Monday night, giving Atlanta a 2-1 victory with his two-run homer in the ninth inning. It marked Freeman's ninth home run against the Mets, his most against any team, and he now has a .311 lifetime average against New York. He has four multihit games against the Mets this season while batting .423.

Justin Verlander continued his winning streak against the Baltimore Orioles earlier this month.

He heads into this matchup feeling as though he's coming off his best performance of the season.

Detroit's ace looks for another victory over the Orioles as the Tigers seek a season-high sixth straight home win Tuesday night.

Verlander (8-4, 3.41 ERA) is 8-0 with a 2.93 ERA over 12 career starts versus Baltimore (40-31), earning a 10-3 victory in the latest outing June 1. The right-hander, though, allowed eight hits, three runs and two homers in seven innings.

That performance was part of a six-start stretch during which Verlander went 4-2 with a 6.68 ERA.

He looked more like the 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Wednesday, allowing three hits with eight strikeouts in seven scoreless innings while not getting a decision in a 3-2 loss at Kansas City.

"For me, it was my best start, just because of the way I've been working to get back where I need to be," Verlander told the team's official website. "I feel like I've been getting better every start. I wasn't exactly where I want to be, but pretty doggone close."

Verlander will attempt to continue an impressive streak by Detroit starting pitchers, who have allowed three runs or fewer in 17 consecutive games, posting a 2.26 ERA during that span.

Max Scherzer continued that run in Monday's 5-1 win over the Orioles, yielding one run with 10 strikeouts in six innings to become the first Tiger to go 10-0 since George Mullin was 11-0 in 1909.

Miguel Cabrera had three hits, including a two-run homer in the first inning after going 5 for 28 (.179) with one home run and three RBIs over nine games.

He's a .481 hitter with nine homers and 25 RBIs in 21 career meetings with the Orioles at Comerica Park. He's 2 for 3 with three walks against scheduled starter Zach Britton.

Last year's Triple Crown winner, Cabrera leads the majors with a .358 average and 71 RBIs, while his 19 homers are second in the AL to the Orioles' Chris Davis.

Davis connected for his major league-leading 24th home run for one of his two hits Monday.

The first baseman is 10 for 24 with four homers and seven RBIs in his past six games versus Detroit (39-29), but he's 3 for 14 (.214) with eight strikeouts versus Verlander.

Britton (0-1, 9.00) is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Norfolk to start in place of Jason Hammel, who continues to battle an illness.

"He's still pretty weak, but he's getting better every day," manager Buck Showalter told the team's official website of Hammel. "The good news is we got contingency things in place."

Britton was a 6-2 loser at Seattle in his only start of the season April 29, surrendering six runs and 10 hits in six innings. The left-hander, though, is 2-1 with a 2.03 ERA over his last five starts at Norfolk.

He's made both of his starts against the Tigers at Comerica, going 2-0 with a 3.75 ERA. Britton scattered six hits in seven scoreless innings of a 3-2 win Aug. 18.

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly never won a World Series with the New York Yankees, but he'll forever be remembered as one of the greatest players in the team's storied history.

"Donnie Baseball" can expect to hear that appreciation Tuesday night when the Dodgers visit the Bronx for the first time since clinching the 1981 World Series.

Mattingly, a six-time All-Star, nine-time Gold Glove winner and the 1985 AL MVP, had his No. 23 retired to Monument Park after playing his entire 14-year career with the Yankees. The former first baseman never made it to the World Series, though, hanging it up in 1995, right before the Yankees' run of four titles in five seasons.

Mattingly returned to the Yankees in 2004 as a coach under Joe Torre, but the Yankees failed to advance to the World Series in his four seasons on the bench. Mattingly, many thought, would replace Torre after the team's longtime manager turned down a one-year offer, but Yankees brass opted for Joe Girardi.

Mattingly left the Yankees and spent the next three seasons as one of Torre's coaches with the Dodgers before taking over as manager in 2011.

His only appearance at new Yankee Stadium was in 2010 for the unveiling of a plaque commemorating late owner George Steinbrenner.

"(Yankees management) treated me fairly I thought," Mattingly told MLB.com. "Things work out for a reason. That would have been really bad timing for me. Terrible. I was going through some personal stuff that would have been miserable trying to manage for the first time and have that going on. So, that was a blessing in disguise.

"Coming to L.A. has been great, and obviously there's been a lot of turmoil this year, but I love what I'm doing and I like being in L.A."

Girardi expects Mattingly's two-game return to New York to be a positive experience.

"I know I've always loved him and appreciated what he's done, and I know the fans have seen a lot more than I have," Girardi said. "I think it'll be a great day for him."

A win would make it even more enjoyable, as the Dodgers (29-39) have dropped six of eight to fall a season-worst 10 games below .500.

They opened their nine-game trip by losing two of three to Pittsburgh. Los Angeles has won just four of 17 as the visitor.

"It's been kind of the same story and that's that we haven't been able to win a series,' Mattingly said after Sunday's 6-3 defeat.

The Yankees (38-31), meanwhile, are back home following a 4-6 trip that ended with Sunday's 6-5 victory over the Los Angeles Angels. New York plated five runs in the third inning - a three-run homer from Travis Hafner and RBI hits from Lyle Overbay and Jayson Nix - en route to snapping a five-game skid.

The Yankees hit .199 while averaging 2.7 runs in their previous nine games.

New York likely will have to generate offense without Mark Teixeira for this series after he exited Saturday's 6-2 loss with an aggravated right wrist. The switch-hitter got a cortisone shot Sunday, and it was determined there were no new tears in the tendon sheath, which could have ended his season.

Overbay, who went 1 for 13 on the trip, is Teixeira's likely replacement.

The Yankees, three back of AL East-leading Boston, will face Hyun-Jin Ryu (6-2, 2.85 ERA) in the opener. The rookie left-hander last pitched in Wednesday's 8-6, 12-inning loss to Arizona, when he allowed three runs and a season-high 11 hits in six innings.

"My fastball was coming over the center off the plate all game, and my velocity really wasn't there," Ryu told the Dodgers' official website. "But I think that's because for the first time in a while (May 22) I went off of four days' rest."

He'll have had five days' rest Tuesday, and he's 3-0 with a 2.03 ERA in four starts with that time in between starts.

New York opens its nine-game homestand with Phil Hughes (3-5, 4.89) trying to bounce back from one of his worst outings of the season. The right-hander walked a career high-tying five in 4 1-3 innings of Wednesday's 5-2 loss at Oakland.

Hughes allowed only an unearned run over seven at Seattle in his previous outing.

"(Putting together consecutive quality starts is) something that he's going through right now," Girardi told the Yankees' official website. "He needs to figure that out for us."

Hughes is 1-3 with a 6.52 ERA in six home starts.

Rookie right fielder Yasiel Puig will make his Yankee Stadium debut after a three-hit effort Sunday lifted his batting average to .479 since the Dodgers called him up June 3.

Puig isn't going anywhere when Matt Kemp and Carl Crawford return from hamstring injuries, so that's left Andre Ethier's future in question. Ethier, though, hasn't let that impact him, going 9 for 20 with a homer and five RBIs in the last five games.

Since the Dodgers' World Series-clinching Game 6 victory at New York on Oct. 28, 1981, these clubs have split six games. They last played June 25-27, 2010, with the Yankees taking two of three.

The Toronto Blue Jays are on the verge of their longest winning streak in nearly five years - with a big thanks owed to their starting pitching.

Esmil Rogers hopes to give them another strong start in his first chance to face the team with which he broke into the majors as Toronto hosts the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night.

The Blue Jays (33-36) claimed their sixth straight win and ninth in 11 games Monday night with a 2-0 victory over the Rockies (37-34). Toronto hasn't had a longer win streak since a 10-game run from Aug. 30-Sept. 9, 2008.

Josh Johnson went 7 1-3 innings and struck out 10 - his most since 2010 - as the latest in a series of strong showings from Toronto's rotation. Blue Jays starters own a 2.32 ERA over the past 12 games, including an 0.53 mark in the last five while going 4-0.

That five-game stretch began with Rogers (2-2, 3.21 ERA) throwing seven innings of one-run ball while yielding five hits and one walk in a 3-1 victory at Texas on Thursday.

"He was tremendous, he really was," manager John Gibbons said. "You could kind of see that building. He's really taken to it."

The only longer start he's had came for Colorado in 2011, two years after he made his major league debut with the Rockies. Rogers pitched 70 games for them before being traded to Cleveland last June.

The former reliever was thrown into Toronto's rotation as injuries piled up. His performance thus far - 1-0 with a 1.26 ERA over three starts since May 29 - might see him stick around longer than expected.

Rogers told the team's official website he started to use his sinker much more Thursday, and the results showed. He struck out only one batter after fanning 10 over his other two starts spanning 7 1-3 innings, but also induced 14 groundballs compared to seven flyballs.

The Rockies, who have lost four of six, hope Jeff Francis (2-4, 5.87) can lead them to a victory in the Vancouver native's second career start in Canada.

While with Kansas City, he yielded two runs over six innings in a 9-6 win at Toronto on Aug. 25, 2011. Francis has won all three starts he's made against the Blue Jays, posting a 2.37 ERA.

"Any time I get to face a team where it's on TV across the country and they can watch, it's fun," Francis told the team's official website. "You want to have a good game every time, but sometimes it's a little extra special."

Francis struck out a season-high eight against Washington on Thursday, not getting a decision as he allowed two runs across six innings in a 5-4 defeat. Colorado has lost six of his last seven starts.

Rajai Davis, who singled and scored on Maicer Izturis' two-run single in the eighth inning Monday, is 5 for 10 versus Francis. Edwin Encarnacion is 2 for 13 against him.

Colorado's Michael Cuddyer has hit safely in 15 straight games.

Kansas City's pitchers have sparked the team's return to the .500 mark.

Right at the head of that effort has been Ervin Santana, who will look to lead the Royals to a winning record for the first time in exactly a month with a victory over the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday night.

"It's important to get to .500, but now it's more important to move past that," manager Ned Yost said.

Kansas City (34-34) has won 11 of 13 behind a pitching staff that has posted a 1.69 ERA during its run while holding opposing hitters to a .217 average.

"We've been playing good baseball and we're enjoying it," designated hitter Billy Butler said. "We're more confident now than we were when we started 17-10.'

It was more of the same Monday, as the Royals held the Indians (34-35) to six hits. James Shields overcame four walks to allow one run in six innings, and the bullpen took care of the rest in Kansas City's 2-1 victory. Royals' relievers have allowed two runs over their last 37 innings.

Santana (5-5, 2.74 ERA) will look to win his third straight start. He hasn't walked a batter over his past two games and has the fourth-best strikeouts-to-walks ratio in the majors.

He failed to pick up a win for over a month as Kansas City tallied just nine runs over six of his starts - all losses for the team - but in his last two outings, the Royals have scored 17 to help Santana even his record. The right-hander surrendered five hits and an unearned run over 7 2-3 innings of a 10-1 win over Tampa Bay on Thursday.

Before winning his last two starts, Santana's last win came against Cleveland on April 27, when he tossed seven scoreless innings with no walks and five strikeouts in a 3-2 victory. He's allowed one run over 14 innings to win his past two against the Indians.

Santana has held Cleveland's Carlos Santana to 3 hits in 14 at_bats, while Mike Aviles has yet to muster a hit against him in 10 at_bats.

Cleveland's once-prolific offense has struggled of late. After finishing third in the majors with 146 runs in May, the Indians are tied for 20th with 53 runs in June. Cleveland has yet to surpass six runs this month after doing so 10 times in May. Even second baseman Jason Kipnis saw his 10-game hitting streak, during which he batted .432, snapped in Monday's loss.

That's rough news for Ubaldo Jimenez (5-4, 4.79), who has received just 17 runs of support over his last six starts.

Jimenez went 12 starts without a win before allowing three hits over seven innings in a 9-0 victory at Kansas City on April 29.

"It felt really good,' Jimenez said. "When I saw the run on my fastball, I said, `We have to take advantage of that.'"

Jimenez will want to be careful with Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer, who has tagged him for five hits, including two home runs, in 11 at_bats.

Cleveland will again be without first baseman Nick Swisher, who is dealing with a sore shoulder and is not expected back until Friday at the earliest.

While they own a lackluster record, the Philadelphia Phillies' play at home lately has provided some optimism.

Cliff Lee's lengthy win streak has also been a bright spot.

The left-hander will try to earn a seventh consecutive win while helping the Phillies record their sixth in a row at Citizens Bank Park on Tuesday night against Washington Nationals.

Philadelphia hasn't been more than one game above .500 this season but would top that if it could sweep a six-game homestand that began Monday. Domonic Brown helped kick off that stay with a game-ending single in 5-4 win over Washington after Jonathan Papelbon blew his first save in 14 chances this season.

Ryan Howard also went 3 for 3 and hit his 300th home run as a first baseman.

"(Papelbon's) been great for us," Brown said. "I told him we're going to fight for him, and we ended up coming up with the win."

Lee (8-2, 2.55 ERA) will try to help the Phillies (34-37) move a step closer to matching its longest win streak at Citizens Bank in 2012, an eight-game run Aug. 30-Sept. 21.

Lee is 6-0 with a 1.93 ERA in his last eight starts, and gave up two runs and three hits over seven innings in his latest outing Thursday, a 3-2 victory in Minnesota.

"I'm going to continue to do what I can to give this team a chance to win when I pitch, and that's really the only thing I can control," he told the team's website.

He was 2-1 with a 1.80 ERA in three starts against the Nationals in 2012.

Washington (34-35) will seek to avoid its first three-game losing streak since dropping a season high-tying four in a row May 18-21.

Ross Detwiler (2-4, 3.02) looks to provide another solid outing. The left-hander, who returned from the disabled list Thursday, has given up three runs or fewer in eight of his nine starts this season and each of his last four.

In his first game back from a strained back muscle, Detwiler surrendered three runs over five innings in Colorado but did not get a decision in a 5-4 win.

"There's always just a little hesitation there, but I was just trying to go out there and attack it (the strike zone) as much as I could," Detwiler told the team's website. "We got through the first one, now hopefully we can relax and I can get back into the form I was in before."

Detwiler's teammates have supported him with two runs or fewer in five of his last six starts. That's a big reason why he has only one win over that stretch, a 7-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs on May 10.

Detwiler is 2-4 with a 4.24 ERA in seven career starts against the Phillies but has had vastly different performances in his team's wins and losses versus its NL East rivals. He is 2-0 with a 0.46 ERA in three victories and 0-4 with a 7.84 ERA in five defeats.

The Nationals are hoping to get Denard Span back from a sore right foot Tuesday. He's batting .359 (14 for 39) in nine games against Philadelphia and is 7 for 20 (.350) all-time versus Lee. However, he hasn't faced the left-hander since the 2010 season, when both players were in the AL.

Span's former Minnesota teammate, Ben Revere, is batting .432 (16 for 37) in an eight-game hit streak for Philadelphia.

The Tampa Bay Rays knew Wil Myers had the talent to play regularly at the major league level, but they simply were waiting for the perfect time to make him a part of the everyday lineup.

One of baseball's top prospects, Myers will make his big league debut as the struggling Rays face the first-place Boston Red Sox in a day-night doubleheader at Fenway Park on Tuesday.

Tampa Bay (36-33) dropped six of the final eight on its 10-game homestand, including two losses to Boston and three of four to Kansas City after Sunday's 5-3 defeat.

With the offense averaging 2.4 runs over the last five, the Rays decided it was time for Myers, rated by some as baseball's top prospect, to join the club.

The outfielder hit .354 with 10 homers and 32 RBIs over his last 23 games in Triple-A, though manager Joe Maddon isn't expecting Myers to live up to the lofty expectations immediately upon his arrival.

"We'll probably hit him lower in the batting order to begin, just to take a little pressure off of him,' Maddon said. "We'll try not to place the expectations too high, although I know it's going to come from outside, not from within."

Maddon just wants Myers, acquired in the December trade that sent James Shields to Kansas City, to focus on the basics.

"I want him to play. I want him to be a Ray," Maddon said. "I want him to run hard to first base. I want him to try to do the right things on the field, continue to work on his defense, try to improve his baserunning."

The Rays are among the major league leaders with runners in scoring position at .294, though they've hit just .141 in those moments while losing seven of nine to the Red Sox this season.

Boston (42-29) will be looking to get back on track as well after dropping three of four at Baltimore over the weekend, including Sunday's 6-3 defeat as Dustin Pedroia and Shane Victorino each sat out to get some extra rest.

The Red Sox lead the AL East, though the fourth-place Rays are just five games back.

"This is going to be a very highly competitive division throughout the course of the summer," Red Sox manager John Farrell told the team's official website.

Boston, which swept Tampa from April 13-15 at Fenway, will turn to Felix Doubront in Game 1 of the doubleheader.

Doubront (4-3, 4.91 ERA) had a rough outing Thursday, giving up four runs while throwing 103 pitches in 4 2-3 innings of Boston's 5-4, 13-inning loss to Baltimore.

The left-hander struck out seven while allowing two runs in five innings of the Red Sox's 4-3 win over Tampa Bay on May 16, and is 2-1 with a 3.95 ERA in five career starts versus the Rays.

He'll be opposed by Chris Archer, who looks for a more efficient outing versus Boston this time around.

Archer (1-2, 4.80) was recalled from the minors June 1 and has made three starts. He allowed two runs, striking out seven and walking four, while tossing 103 pitches in just four innings of Wednesday's 2-1 loss to the Red Sox.

The right-hander faced Boston once last season as well, giving up three runs in five innings of a 13-3 win Sept. 19.

Alfredo Aceves (3-1, 5.58) will take the mound for the Red Sox in Game 2. He returned from another stint in the minors to oppose Archer on Wednesday, allowing one run - a solo homer to Evan Longoria, who had gone 0 for 9 previously in their matchups - in six innings and picking up the victory.

It marked the right-hander's first start versus Tampa Bay after going 2-1 with three saves and a 2.39 ERA in 19 relief appearances.

Opposing Aceves is Jake Odorizzi (0-0, 8.03), who came over with Myers in the Shields deal. The right-hander will be making his third start after giving up two runs in 3 1-3 innings of relief in Tampa's 10-1 loss to Kansas City on Thursday.

Odorizzi is 0-1 with a 7.16 ERA in four career starts.

Mat Latos has gone 21 consecutive starts without losing.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have never beaten him.

The right-hander looks to keep both streaks going as the Cincinnati Reds host the Pirates on Tuesday night.

Latos (6-0, 3.08 ERA) has not lost since Aug. 24, 2012, but he's looking to bounce back from one of his worst starts of the season. Though he left after six innings with a one-run lead, Latos allowed four runs and eight hits in a 6-5, 14-inning loss to the Chicago Cubs on Thursday.

"It was just one of those days," said Latos, who has won his last four home starts.

A short-handed bullpen will look to do a better job of supporting Latos on Tuesday. Sean Marshall has been out since May 24 with a sprained shoulder, and Jonathan Broxton joined him on the disabled list Saturday with an elbow problem. Even so, Cincinnati's relievers have pitched 9 1-3 innings of scoreless relief since blowing Latos' chance to win and have a 0.90 ERA in the last seven games.

Latos also hopes to ride a recent power surge, as the Reds (43-28) delivered their second four-homer performance in a week in Monday's 4-1 victory over Pittsburgh. Jay Bruce homered for the third time in four games and is batting .342 since May 30. Zack Cozart hit his second home run in seven games, a stretch during which he's hitting .355.

Latos has the added comfort facing an opponent to which he's never lost, having gone 4-0 in eight starts versus the Pirates with 53 strikeouts in 51 innings. His 2.29 ERA against them is his second-lowest against any team he's faced multiple times.

Cincinnati has gone 10-4 in Latos' starts this season, but two of those losses came in Pittsburgh. He allowed a combined five runs - four earned - and struck out 13 in 12 2-3 innings.

Among the Pirates (41-29) to have struggled against Latos are Garrett Jones (3 for 21) and Starling Marte (1 for 8).

While Latos has just two losses in his last 44 starts, Pittsburgh scheduled starter Charlie Morton (0-1, 3.60) has lost four straight and six of seven going back to May 2012. The right-hander made his season debut Tuesday in his return from Tommy John surgery, surrendering four runs - two earned - and seven hits in five innings of a 10-0 loss to San Francisco.

"There's room for improvement but for being out a year, first time out on a major league mound, there's some things we can definitely work with," manager Clint Hurdle said.

Morton was undone by wildness (three hit batters) as well as bad luck (three infield hits) against the Giants.

"I didn't look to this start to validate that I'm back,'" Morton said. "It's part of the process, a long process."

Morton went 0-2 with a 7.20 ERA in two matchups with the Reds last season after going 3-0 with a 0.93 ERA against them in 2011.

The Texas Rangers showed more spark than they had in the past week by rallying to win their series opener against the AL West-leading Oakland Athletics.

The Rangers will next try to give Yu Darvish some more support while denying A's right-hander Jarrod Parker a career high-tying fourth consecutive victory Tuesday night.

Texas was outscored 34-8 during a six-game losing streak but avoided its longest skid in five years with an 8-7 victory Monday. The Rangers gave up six runs in the fourth inning but responded by taking the lead for good in the fifth.

A.J. Pierzynski hit a two-out RBI double, and Nelson Cruz drove in two more runs with his second homer of the night. The win pushed Texas (39-31) to within two games of Oakland (42-30) in the division.

"We were looking for what happened, get some base hits in RBI situations and just keep grinding,' manager Ron Washington said. "They just showed what they have the capability of doing, what they did tonight."

The Rangers will try to slice that deficit again with help from Darvish (7-2, 2.64 ERA), who has a 2.08 ERA in his last five starts. The right-hander, though, is winless in those games and started that stretch with a 1-0 home loss to Oakland on May 21.

Texas has provided him a combined seven runs in those five outings and gave him one in a 3-1 defeat to Toronto on Thursday. Darvish allowed one run and three hits over seven innings while striking out nine and avoiding the loss.

"Some games you get a lot of run support, and some games you don't. My approach to the game is the same, try to minimize the damage as much as I can," Darvish told the team's website through an interpreter. "My job is to contribute to the team as much as possible and make the game as close as possible."

Darvish has lost three straight starts against Oakland but has given up a combined four runs in his last two matchups, covering 13 innings. He has been given two total runs of support in those three games.

Parker, meanwhile, has gotten a combined 25 runs from the A's in four career matchups with Texas. However, only one of those runs came in his most recent start against the Rangers, a 3-1 loss in Arlington on May 22.

Parker (5-6, 4.45) allowed three runs over seven innings in his first career defeat to Texas. He's 3-1 with a 3.00 ERA in four all-time matchups.

Parker is 3-0 with a 1.91 ERA in his last four overall starts but did not earn a victory Thursday for the first time since last month's loss to Texas. He yielded two runs over eight innings to the Yankees before the A's won 3-2 in 18.

Parker earned a career-best four straight wins Sept. 10-Oct. 1.

It's unknown if Oakland's Yoenis Cespedes will return to the outfield Tuesday. Cespedes, batting .185 against Texas this season, has spent four games at designated hitter since injuring his hamstring last Tuesday.

"If he can get in the outfield, then I can DH somebody else and use a little bit more of the roster," manager Bob Melvin told the team's website.

Texas' Lance Berkman might return to the lineup Tuesday for the first time in three games. The 37-year-old designated hitter is batting .194 (12 for 64) with one homer and three RBIs in his last 17 contests, and might be feeling the effects of four career knee operations.

Just as they were when these teams last met about a month ago, the Minnesota Twins and Chicago White Sox are battling to stay out of the AL Central basement.

These slumping division foes begin a three-game set Tuesday night with the Twins badly struggling at the plate and the White Sox looking to end their road woes.

Chicago was in last place and 1 1/2 games behind Minnesota after winning two of three at Target Field from May 13-15. That gap remains the same, as do their positions in the bottom half of the Central.

The Twins (30-36) have lost seven of 11 while averaging 2.6 runs and batting .177 with runners in scoring position. They were held to three hits for the third time in four games Sunday in a 5-2 loss to Detroit.

"It seems like a week goes by and we're hitting the cover off the ball, then we hit a little slump as a team," said Brian Dozier, who homered Sunday. "I think it's all about big hits, two-out hits. We've been leaving a lot of guys on base."

Justin Morneau has a team-high 38 RBIs but only four in his last 14 games. Even leading hitter Joe Mauer (.321) is 4 for 20 with no extra-base hits in the past six.

Ryan Doumit is in a 3-for-27 slump as is Josh Willingham, who should return after missing two games with a knee problem.

"It's just a matter of guys getting going," manager Ron Gardenhire said.

The White Sox (29-38) can't get going on the road, where they have dropped 12 of 14 and are an AL-worst 13-24. They've averaged 2.8 runs in the last 13 away from home but did avoid a four-game sweep to another last-place team Monday, beating Houston 4-2.

Chicago had lost four straight and 14 of 18 overall

"Obviously, we've been struggling and getting this one and avoiding the streak was big and hopefully we start a new win streak and win (Tuesday)," Jesse Crain said after tying a franchise record for relievers with his 27th straight scoreless appearance.

Dayan Viciedo's bases-loaded triple in the sixth inning was the difference, but he's 4 for 44 in his last 12 road games.

"It's just one of those that you hope gets him going a little bit because he's been missing out," manager Robin Ventura said.

Chicago hasn't won a series on the road since last month's visit to Minneapolis.

Adam Dunn homered three times in that set and is batting .343 with five home runs and 13 RBIs in his last nine games at Target Field. Dunn has five hits in his last 10 at_bats against Twins scheduled starter Mike Pelfrey (3-6, 6.12 ERA).

The right-hander is 0-3 in his past seven outings. Pelfrey, though, provided a second straight quality start Wednesday as he gave up three runs and struck out seven in a season-best seven innings of a 4-3 victory over Philadelphia.

Things didn't go as well against Chicago on May 15. He was tagged for five runs and eight hits - including homers by Dunn and Viciedo - in four-plus innings of a 9-4 loss.

Dylan Axelrod was the winner, giving up three runs in 5 1-3 innings, and opposes Pelfrey again Tuesday.

Axelrod (3-4, 4.26) is coming off seven days' rest, given extra time off after a dreadful outing last Monday. The third-year right-hander allowed six runs, four walks and eight hits - including three homers - over four-plus innings in a 10-6 victory over Toronto. Axelrod had a 2.66 ERA in his previous four outings.

Chicago has won six consecutive series at Target Field, going 15-4.

Improved pitching has provided a recent spark for the Milwaukee Brewers.

The same could be said of the Houston Astros, and in particular Jordan Lyles.

The Brewers look for another strong performance on the mound from an unlikely source, while Lyles attempts to continue his impressive stretch in the opener of this three-game set Tuesday night.

Milwaukee's starting pitchers compiled a 7.62 ERA during a recent 3-10 stretch, lasting beyond the sixth inning only twice. However, they've been superb since, posting a 2.26 ERA while the Brewers have won six of nine, including a 5-1 loss at Cincinnati on Sunday.

The recent effectiveness of the rotation has been a welcome surprise since slugger Ryan Braun is on the disabled list with a thumb injury.

"It's unbelievable, and it stems from the pitching," outfielder Logan Schafer told the team's official website. "It's been so great lately, and I think the entire team is feeding off it.

"There's that team confidence. It's a good feeling."

Alfredo Figaro (1-0, 3.47 ERA) certainly felt good about his last start, allowing three hits in seven scoreless innings while retiring 16 in a row at one point of Wednesday's 10-1 win at Miami. It was the right-hander's first victory since Sept, 26, 2009, with Detroit, and a vast improvement after he gave up eight runs in 10 1-3 innings over his previous two starts.

Figaro is scheduled to face the Astros (26-45) for the first time since June 27, 2009, when he was tagged for eight runs in six innings of an 8-1 defeat at Houston.

The Astros had a four-game winning streak end with Monday's 4-2 defeat to the Chicago White Sox, but strong pitching played a big role in their surge.

Houston owns the worst ERA in the majors at 4.73, but the staff has a 2.20 ERA over the past five games and has been getting outstanding work from Lyles (3-1, 3.48) for much longer than that.

The right-hander has pitched to a 1.67 ERA over his last six starts after compiling an 8.36 mark over his first three following his recall from Triple-A Oklahoma City. Despite his recent success, he has just a 2-0 record to show for it thanks in large part to being backed by an average of 2.9 runs.

The offense let him down again Wednesday, when Lyles limited Seattle to three hits over seven scoreless innings with a career-high 10 strikeouts. The Astros, though, scored all their runs in he ninth inning in a 6-1 victory.

"Even the times in which he got into trouble, you can see the look in his eyes and the patience and the poise of 'I'm going to make quality pitches to get out of this,'" manager Bo Porter said.

Lyles was excellent in his most recent meeting with the Brewers on Sept. 30, tossing a four-hitter in a 7-0 road win. He was 0-3 with a 5.54 ERA over his five prior meetings - four starts.
