                    • Preview: Cardinals (42-23) at Mets (24-36)
                      Game: 3
                      Venue: Citi Field
                      Date: June 13, 2013 1:10 PM EDT

Although Adam Wainwright is in position to win a career best-tying fifth consecutive start, he's lost four in a row to the New York Mets.

He also figures to face stiff competition from counterpart Matt Harvey, who appears to be good to go following last week's injury scare.

Wainwright takes the mound opposite the unbeaten Harvey as the visiting St. Louis Cardinals conclude a three-game set with the Mets on Thursday, weather permitting.

Leading the majors with a 13.0 strikeout-to-walk ratio - more than twice as high as the next guy - Wainwright (9-3, 2.34 ERA) has struck out 28 and issued two free passes during a four-start winning streak since losing to the Mets last month. He turned in another superb effort Friday, giving up two runs and seven hits over seven innings during a 9-2 win at Cincinnati.

Wainwright won five consecutive starts Aug. 4-26.

"I think it's just another way of mixing things up and being the complete pitcher," Wainwright, who kept switching his mechanics, told MLB's official website. "As long as you're OK in your delivery and can mix speeds with your pitches, why not mix with your delivery? Give them a different look - one over the head, one not. I just think it's a different way to give different looks."

Wainwright could certainly afford to change things up versus New York (24-36). The right-hander has gone 1-4 over seven regular-season games - five starts - in the series while compiling a 7.29 ERA, by far his highest mark against any NL opponent. He gave up four runs in six innings during a 5-2 loss May 16.

Daniel Murphy and Omar Quintanilla are a combined 10 for 18 with four doubles and a triple against Wainwright and Lucas Duda is 2 for 5 with a homer.

After beating St. Louis (42-23) by a 5-1 score Wednesday thanks to homers from David Wright, Duda and Marlon Byrd, the Mets will try to back Harvey (5-0, 2.10) with a similar display. The emerging superstar has received an average of just 2.66 runs of support over his last nine starts, a stretch during which he's gone 1-0 with a 2.66 ERA.

Harvey scattered six hits and struck out six over seven innings of one-run ball in Saturday's 2-1, 20-inning loss to Miami. He came out to warm up in the eighth but was removed due to tightness in his lower back.

Harvey, though, received treatment immediately and is expected to be fine going forward.

"We can't risk this guy getting hurt," manager Terry Collins said. "It would be one of the worst decisions you can make to let this guy go out there, as competitive as he is, and pitch with a possible injury that could not only hurt his back even worse, but have him change his delivery where he could hurt his arm."

After checking out OK, the only thing that would prevent Harvey from pitching is the weather. With thunderstorms expected in the area, the Mets are preparing for their seventh rainout.

"It doesn't look good, I know that," Collins said. "I don't think anybody in baseball has gone through what we've gone through this year.

"We've had so many days off early, it's not like anybody's tired, but when it starts getting 90 degrees every day and it's July, it's going to take its toll to where you've really got to make sure guys are getting days off to keep their energy up, because it's going to wear them down."

Cardinals third baseman David Freese went 0 for 4 on Wednesday, ending his career-best 20-game hitting streak - the majors' longest this season.

                        Game: 4
                        Venue: Wrigley Field
                        Date: June 13, 2013 2:20 PM EDT

The Cincinnati Reds have gotten back on track in their series against the Chicago Cubs, largely due to their performance on the mound.

The Reds appear to have a good chance to continue that outstanding pitching and their lengthy winning streak at Wrigley Field with Mat Latos taking the ball in Thursday's finale.

Mike Leake provided the latest strong outing Wednesday when he allowed one run and three hits in eight innings to lead Cincinnati to a 2-1 victory over the Cubs (25-38), who have lost eight of 10.

The Reds (40-26) are 19-3 in the last 22 meetings with Chicago, including a franchise-best 12 straight road wins - the longest streak by an opponent at Wrigley.

"We're just having fun. That's the only thing I can say," said third baseman Todd Frazier, who homered for the second straight game and gave the Reds the lead in the seventh inning. "We're relaxed when we play here. We like playing here."

Though they had a 7.63 ERA in a stretch of four losses in five games, the Reds have bounced back with a 1.33 ERA in this series.

They should be feeling confident with Latos (6-0, 2.87 ERA) on the mound as they try for the four-game sweep. The right-hander has a chance to become the first Red to be unbeaten with an ERA below 3.00 after 14 starts.

                        He also hasn't lost in a team-record 20 starts, going 10-0 with a 2.65 ERA while leading Cincinnati to a 17-3 record.

Latos has earned two of those victories against the Cubs, yielding three runs over 12-plus innings versus them this season. He's 4-2 with a 2.91 ERA in seven career starts against Chicago, winning both outings at Wrigley.

Nate Schierholtz (4 for 24), Alfonso Soriano (3 for 14) and Darwin Barney (0 for 9 with four strikeouts) haven't been able to figure out Latos, while David DeJesus is 4 for 10 with two doubles.

Chicago has struggled at Wrigley with a .158 batting average while losing seven of eight there. They weren't able to get anything going again Wednesday, aside from Schierholtz's homer in the second.

Starlin Castro (1 for 26), Barney (4 for 28), Anthony Rizzo (2 for 23) and DeJesus (2 for 18) have gotten off to slow starts this month at home.

"It's frustrating because it's the same game," manager Dale Sveum said. "Starting pitchers pitching into the seventh inning, quality starts. And we're not having quality at_bats on an everyday basis."

Scheduled starter Jeff Samardzija (3-7, 3.18) has received three runs of support in his last two starts, though he hasn't been sharp.

He went 0-1 with a 5.11 ERA despite 18 strikeouts in those 12 1-3 innings after going 2-1 with a 1.13 ERA over his previous three outings.

Samardzija is 1-2 with a 2.55 ERA in four career starts versus the Reds, allowing two earned runs over 12 innings while going 0-1 in two outings against them this season.

Frazier and Shin-Soo Choo have taken the right-hander deep in 2013.

Samardzija, though, has done a nice job over his career against sluggers Brandon Phillips (2 for 19), Joey Votto (3 for 17) and Jay Bruce (3 for 14).

The Washington Nationals are about to get a boost from the expected return of two key members of their starting rotation.

Ross Detwiler will be the first to come off the disabled list and try to help the Nationals win their first road series in more than a month Thursday against the Colorado Rockies.

With Detwiler (2-4, 2.76 ERA) set to make his first start since straining a back muscle May 15 and star Stephen Strasburg expected back from a lat strain Sunday at Cleveland, Washington (32-32) has reason to feel optimistic.

"It's always tough, but in a long season like this, you kind of have to expect something to go wrong," Detwiler told the Nationals' official website. "We were fortunate enough last year, as a pitching staff, to be healthy all year, but our hitters weren't healthy all year.

"Hopefully we get everything out of the way and in the second half we can just look forward and not have to worry about injuries."

Detwiler, who allowed one run in 3 2-3 innings during a rehab appearance with Class-A Potomac on Saturday, plans to wait to give a fair assessment of his recovery.

"I'll let you know after (Thursday's) game," the left-hander said. "Still a big step (Thursday), so we'll see."

Detwiler's two starts versus the Rockies were both losses at Coors Field, posting an 8.00 ERA.

He'll try to help the Nationals build on a 5-1 victory over Colorado (35-31) on Wednesday and win a series on the road for the first time since taking two of three at Pittsburgh from May 3-5. Ross Ohlendorf threw six strong innings in his Washington debut, and Ian Desmond had three RBIs as the Nationals notched their third win in 12 road games.

Desmond is batting .358 with 11 RBIs during a career-high 14-game hitting streak. He's hit .469 with 12 RBIs in his last eight games versus Colorado, and he's 3 for 8 with a double and a home run against scheduled Rockies starter Jeff Francis (2-4, 6.30).

The left-hander will try to bounce back after he allowed four runs, six hits and three walks in four innings of a 4-2 loss to San Diego on Saturday. It was his first outing since missing almost a month with a left groin strain.

"I don't think I was rusty," said Francis, whose spot in the Rockies rotation appears anything but stable.

"I think any day you think the same way, whether it is April or September."

He is 1-2 with a 4.81 ERA in seven starts versus Washington.

Infielder Jonathan Herrera had two of the three hits Wednesday for the Rockies, who averaged 7.1 runs and 13.1 hits while winning five of the previous seven.

Colorado's Troy Tulowitzki went 0 for 4, but he still ranks third in the majors with a .347 batting average.

Teammate Michael Cuddyer is expected to play Thursday after missing five games with a ribcage strain. He's batting .395 with eight RBIs during a 10-game hitting streak.

                          • Preview: Yankees (37-28) at Athletics (40-27)
                            Game: 3
                            Venue: O.co Coliseum
                            Date: June 13, 2013 3:35 PM EDT

The Oakland Athletics may have to overcome some difficult circumstances to extend streaks of 10 straight home wins and six in a row at home over the New York Yankees.

The Athletics have struggled all season in day games and could again be without two key hitters when they go for a three-game sweep Thursday.

Oakland (40-27) seeks its longest run at home since taking 12 in a row Aug. 13-Sept. 14, 2002. The Athletics last enjoyed a longer run at home versus New York (37-28) when they won 10 straight there from 1989-91.

One curious aspect of Oakland's season is its 11-14 mark in day games - the third-worst in the AL. The Athletics own the league's second-best mark overall.

Oakland won 5-2 on Wednesday without center fielder Coco Crisp and left fielder Yoenis Cespedes.

Cespedes, who leads the club with 13 homers, left early after he tweaked his left hamstring in Tuesday's 6-4 victory. It's almost certain he will sit out Thursday.

Crisp, who has homered in consecutive games, has a bruised heel. There's a better chance he could see action in the finale.

"He felt better when he got to the park and got some treatment," manager Bob Melvin said. "We won't take any chances with him but if he comes in and feels like he's close to 100 percent, there's the potential for him to play."

Oakland has not needed much offense in going a major league-best 20-5 since May 17. A's starters have gone 15-3 with an AL-best 2.54 ERA in that span including a 1.50 ERA during this streak at home.

It's up to Jarrod Parker (5-6, 4.68 ERA) to continue that trend Thursday as he looks to win a fourth straight start.

The right-hander, who has a 1.77 ERA in his last three, is 1-0 with a 1.13 ERA in two career starts against the Yankees, with Robinson Cano 0 for 6 against him.

Parker will be opposed by Hiroki Kuroda (6-5, 2.84), who is enduring his longest winless stretch with New York by going 0-3 with a 5.23 ERA in his last four outings.

Kuroda is 1-2 with a 4.12 ERA in three starts against the A's, winning last May 27 in his lone one in Oakland - also the last time New York won there.

The right-hander will be hoping that the Yankees can end their season-high five-game drought without a homer. It's the club's longest drought since also going five games from May 17-21, 2006, and it hasn't gone six in a row without a homer since June 12-17, 1996.

"It's part of the game. You have to fight your way out of it," manager Joe Girardi said. "We know the guys are capable."

Travis Hafner is in a 0-for-14 drought while Kevin Youkilis is 5 for 30 this month with no homers.

Oakland has all four homers in this series, with Brandon Moss connecting twice Wednesday. He's 5 for 40 over his last 19 games, with all of the hits leaving the ballpark.

"I'll take that," said Moss, batting .228. "It's not where I want to be, obviously. I'd much rather be getting hits also."

The Boston Red Sox are trying to create some separation atop the AL East.

The Baltimore Orioles would like to further tighten the crowded race.

Mike Carp will try to continue his offensive surge as the Red Sox open a four-game series with the Orioles at Camden Yards on Thursday night.

Boston (41-26) leads the division, which has Baltimore (37-29), New York and Tampa Bay within five games of first.

The Orioles are third, 3 1/2 games behind the Red Sox, who took two of three from the Rays following Wednesday's 2-1 victory.

Despite scoring five runs with 13 hits - 12 singles - over the last two games, the Red Sox are hitting .303 with 24 homers while averaging 6.3 runs during a 13-6 stretch.

Carp has been a pleasant surprise, going 12 for 25 (.480) with three homers and eight RBIs over his last seven games, increasing his season average 55 points to .330. He's 3 for 16 in six meetings with the Orioles.

Felix Doubront (4-3, 4.84 ERA) wouldn't mind some offensive help since he's been backed by two runs or fewer in six of his last seven games. He's 1-3 with a 5.21 ERA over that span.

The left-hander got two runs Saturday, but he gave up three in six innings of a 9-5 defeat to the Los Angeles Angels.

Doubront can point to the offense for his 0-2 record in three starts versus Baltimore - all coming last season. He's compiled a 2.70 ERA, while receiving five total runs of help.

The Orioles are looking to rebound from Wednesday's 9-5 defeat to the Los Angeles Angels, only their second loss in 10 home games. They've won five of six in Baltimore against Boston, but have yet to meet there this season.

Kevin Gausman (0-3, 8.84) is scheduled to get the ball against the Red Sox for the first time, and he's getting a fifth chance at his first career win.

The 22-year-old rookie, selected fourth overall out of LSU in last year's draft, has given up seven runs while failing to complete five innings in two of his last three starts. He was tagged for seven runs in 4 1-3 innings of an 8-0 loss at Tampa Bay on Saturday.

"I feel like I'm throwing good pitches, and sometimes I get the outcome that I hoped, and sometimes I don't," Gausman said. "A little frustrating, but I feel good ... mentally and physically, I feel good, and I feel like I have the stuff to be here. I just haven't produced."

Manny Machado is on the brink of matching his career-high 11-game hitting streak set from April 22-May 2. The 20-year-old third baseman hit .426 during that run compared to only .262 over the past 10 games.

He's batting .406 with nine RBIs over his last eight games with Boston, and he's 3 for 5 with a homer versus Doubront.

Chris Davis is 5 for 10 with a double and a homer off him, and he's 11 for 24 (.458) over his last eight meetings against Boston. He's also homered in five of the last six games, driving in seven runs and scoring as many.

The first baseman hit his major league-leading 21st homer Wednesday.

It's been over five years since the Pittsburgh Pirates have swept the San Francisco Giants.

It's been just over one year since Charlie Morton last pitched in the majors.

Morton takes the mound opposite Matt Cain as the Pirates host the Giants in Thursday night's finale.

After taking Tuesday's opener 8-2 behind an impressive effort from prized pitching prospect Gerrit Cole, Pittsburgh's bats led the way Wednesday in a 12-8 victory. Starling Marte, Jordy Mercer, Andrew McCutchen and Gaby Sanchez - the top four hitters in the batting order - went a combined 13 for 19 with eight runs while Neil Walker added a homer and three RBIs. Alex Presley also went deep.

"The top of the order was really special, the runs, the hits," said manager Clint Hurdle, whose club posted its most runs and hits (18) this season. "They just kept fueling us from the first inning through the eighth."

Seeking a fifth consecutive win in the series and its first sweep of San Francisco since May 6-8, 2008, the Pirates (39-26) turn to Morton. After undergoing Tommy John surgery last June 14, Morton is looking forward to getting back on the field.

"You can't escape emotion," he told MLB's official website. "I'm going to be nervous. I'm going to be excited, emotions that anyone would feel."

The right-hander, who's starting in place of the injured Wandy Rodriguez, allowed two runs and six hits over 6 1-3 innings during Saturday's rehab start with Triple-A Indianapolis.

Asked if Thursday is a spot start for Morton, Hurdle replied, "I don't know. We'll just figure out as we go. I don't need to make those decisions now for a group. I think we need to give Charlie an opportunity to go pitch and that will help us make our decision."

Morton is 1-0 with a 1.89 ERA in his last three starts against the Giants (33-31), who have dropped 10 of 13 on the road. After placing All-Star third baseman Pablo Sandoval (strained left foot) on the disabled list Tuesday, San Francisco was also without second baseman Marco Scutaro on Wednesday. Scutaro, dealing with an injury to his pinkie finger after getting hit by a pitch Tuesday, is out indefinitely.

Manager Bruce Bochy, though, should be back after serving a one-game suspension. He was ejected and later reprimanded after major league baseball said reliever George Kontos intentionally hit McCutchen with a pitch after both benches had been warned Tuesday.

The Giants will try to bounce back behind Cain (4-3, 5.09 ERA), who's gone 4-1 over his last seven starts. The right-hander has allowed one or two runs in five of those outings and a combined 13 in the other two.

"You can't get too ahead of yourself," he said.

Cain had compiled an 8.88 ERA over a four-start road stretch before giving up a run and four hits over seven-plus innings Friday in a 3-1 loss at Arizona. He left with a 1-0 lead before Jeremy Affeldt surrendered a three-run homer.

"Cain threw really well," Affeldt said. "He didn't deserve that."

Cain has been nearly untouchable over five starts against Pittsburgh since 2009, going 2-0 with a 1.46 ERA. He struck out 11 in a one-hitter during his last matchup in the series, a 5-0 victory April 13, 2012.

Cain has made things especially difficult on Clint Barmes and McCutchen, who are a combined 2 for 31 against him. Sanchez has also struggled, going 2 for 14.
