        • Hot & Not - NL Edition

          June 10, 2013

There are most certainly some surprises that you wouldn't expect at this point in MLB betting action in the National League. The list of teams that are hot and not are relatively thin, as most of the teams have essentially split their games over the course of the last week or so. There are some that are standing out for all of the right reasons and all of the wrong reasons though, and we're here to set the record straight on them all.

          Money-Makers

Miami Marlins (4-3, +$499 in L/7) – Grab a screenshot of this and put it in your scrapbook, as it isn't anything you'll see all that often. The Fish have netted $880 of profits this year against the Mets, and they have eight wins against their NL East foes. Then again, after Saturday, Miami is 1-0 in games that last into the 20th inning as well.

On Deck: The bad news? Against the rest of baseball, the Marlins still only have 10 wins through 51 games played. They'll host Milwaukee and St. Louis this week, and a return to the norm should be in the cards.

Atlanta Braves (7-2, +$479 in L/9) – The Braves are starting to build what might be an unassailable lead in the NL East with the way that they are playing while the rest of baseball is more or less just muddling along. This trip out to the West Coast hasn't been puzzling yet, though the team only split the four games against the Dodgers.

On Deck: Finishing up this trip strong is important for the Braves. If they can handle San Diego for these three games at Petco Park and their three with the Giants at home over the weekend, the next several weeks really loosen up. There's five with the Mets, three with the Brewers, and two with the Royals to follow.

Milwaukee Brewers (3-0, +$322 in L/3) – Slim pickings for sure in the National League, where the longest winning streak belongs to the Brewers. They took the final three games of their series against the Phillies this weekend, but they still have tremendous problems to tend to, particularly in their pitching staff.

On Deck: We admit that Milwaukee doesn't really classify as "hot" yet with just three wins in a row, but with these next three coming against the Marlins, there's a real chance to be on a six-game winning streak going into Cincinnati this weekend.

          Money-Burners

New York Mets (1-7, -$829 in L/8) – If the Marlins are hot, the team that is losing to the Marlins is particularly cold. We saw this coming, though. The Mets were all full of themselves and high and mighty after taking all four games against the Yankees, but alas, they're still just the Mets, and they still clearly stink.

On Deck: We have to imagine that the hometown crowd is really going to be giving it to the Metropolitans in these next two series against the Cardinals and the Cubs if the home team isn't coming up with some more wins. However, this series against St. Louis, arguably the best team in baseball, is really poorly placed in the schedule with the form that the team is currently in.

Cincinnati Reds (1-4, -$411 in L/5) – The Reds had their chance to make up games against the Cardinals last week, but losing two of three, and particularly losing the Sunday Night Baseball game in extra innings hurt quite a bit.

On Deck: Four against the Cubbies and three against the Brewers will surely cure what is ailing the Reds this week. We expect to see them back into second place by themselves in the NL Central and right back on the heels of the Cardinals by the time this week concludes.

Pittsburgh Pirates (2-6, -$329 in L/8) – We're not really worried about the fact that the Jolly Roger has only been sent up twice in Pittsburgh's last eight games. This is still one of the best teams in the game, and most are looking forward to the Bucs calling up RHP Gerrit Cole on Tuesday night.

On Deck: That Tuesday nighter against the defending champs might be the most anticipated game that the Pirates have had in 20 years. After the Giants leave town, the Dodgers will be right behind them for a weekend series in the Steel City.

          • See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities

Spot bets are a classic handicapping practice that have proven profitable no matter what sport you’re betting. Whether it’s a team looking past this week’s opponent, one coming off a hard-fought victory, or a rough patch of schedule, bettors can find value picking their spots.

            Lookahead spot

The Golden Nugget posted their college football “Games of the Year” this past Friday and opened up a new set of odds for spot bettors to juggle. Fans of the lookahead spot can’t help but notice the Oklahoma Sooners’ home date with the TCU Horned Frogs in Week 6, just a week away from the Red River Rivalry and a showdown with the Texas Longhorns (Pick) at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington. According to the Big 12 futures odds, that game could give either OU or Texas the inside track to the conference championship.

Oddsmakers opened OU as a 9-point home favorite versus TCU on October 5. The Sooners have gone 12-1 SU in the game before the Red River Rivalry since 2000, but boast a 6-7 ATS mark in that span. The Horned Frogs lost 24-17 to OU but covered as 6.5-point home underdogs in Week 14 last year. TCU is the fourth overall favorite (+500) to win the Big 12.

            Letdown spot

The Tampa Bay Rays are desperately trying to pull themselves out of the American League East basement and have a good opportunity to gain ground this week, hosting the division-leading Boston Red Sox for three games. The Rays have had a tough slate recently, taking two of three with Baltimore after road sets at Detroit and Cleveland, and the level of intensity will be at an apex versus the BoSox.

Following that set with Boston, the Rays welcome the Kansas City Royals to Minute Maid Park – a drastic shift in urgency and intensity from the previous series. The Royals were the laughing stock of baseball in May but have turned it around, winning five straight heading into their series with Detroit. Kansas City could catch Tampa Bay napping at the end of the week.

            Schedule spot

Jeff Van Gundy isn’t the only one voicing his opinion about the 2-3-2 format of the NBA Finals, he just happens to have the loudest microphone. The ESPN announcer bashed the finals format, which has been in place since 1985, during the Game 2 broadcast. After splitting the first two games in South Beach, the Miami Heat and San Antonio Spurs play three games at the AT&T Center – more importantly Game 3 Tuesday night.

Since 1985, when the series is tied 1-1, the winner of Game 3 has gone on to win the NBA Championship 12 out of 13 times. Oddsmakers have the Spurs pegged as 2-point home favorites in Game 3 but listed as +150 underdogs to win the NBA title. San Antonio is 6-1 SU and 4-3 ATS at home this postseason and posted a 35-6 SU and 19-20-2 ATS mark as hosts during the regular season.

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud...........

              13) Shootings in Santa Monica over the weekend remind me that I spent a day on that campus in October 1990, watching a football game between the Santa Monica Corsairs and West LA Junior College.

Not much of a field, just couple hundred fans on metal bleachers (Miami-Notre Dame was the big game back then, and that was on TV at same time that day) but it was obviously high-caliber football. Warren Moon played for West LA years before that.

              12) Five years later, I’m watching the Rams on the satellite dish, thumbing through their media guide, and it occurs to me that Isaac Bruce played for West LA that day in 1990, that’s how high quality the football was.

Memphis hired a coach named Chuck Stobart who brought a lot of JC kids with him from California, and that’s how Reverend Ike became a Memphis Tiger. Hopefully he’ll get in the Pro Football Hall of Fame someday soon.

              11) Not enough people read the baseball page on this website, because Nevada sportsbooks made $6.4M booking baseball bets this past April. Studying trends can help you win in baseball.

              10) Tim Duncan is shooting 3-16 in Finals when Udonis Haslem is on the court, 8-16 when Haslem is off the court.

              9) Indiana Hoosiers are first Big Dozen team to make College World Series since Michigan did it in 1984. Hoosiers beat perennial power Florida State twice to get to Omaha.

              8) Last year, Cubs’ 1B/OF Bryan LaHair made the All-Star Game after a hot first half of the season; his stock with the Cubs fell so fast that LaHair now plays for the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks in Japan, where he makes $2.25M a year. Cubs got $900,000 to transfer his contract to Fukuoka.

              7) If you go to a Rockies’ game and Jhoulys Chacin is pitching, give the babysitter a little extra cash; Chacin’s last four starts all went into extra innings.

              6) Former Miami, OH hoop coach Charlie Coles passed away last week at age 71; at one time in Oxford, his coaching staff was Herb Sendek/Thad Matta/Sean Miller. Not a bad coaching staff there.

              5) New Northwestern coach Chris Collins is going to try and run with his Wildcats, a team that has run the slowish Princeton offense for over a decade; C Alex Olah has already dropped 15 pounds, just since the season ended- that has to be a directive from the new coach.

              4) Potentially good news for Miami Heat fans: NBA teams that opened the Finals L-W at home have still won eight of 13 NBA Finals series.

              3) There is actually a pro golfer named Ryan Yip; he was the last guy to qualify for the US Open this year.

Insert your own putting-related joke here.

              2) Was reading some stuff Monday; the 1977 NBA Draft, the same month I graduated from high school, was held on June 10, 17 days before this year’s draft will be held. TV pushed the NBA Finals’ schedule back into June, since May is a Sweeps ratings month and back then, the NBA didn’t do very good ratings, so TV didn’t want the Finals played in May.

Anyway, Milwaukee took Indiana center Kent Benson with the first pick, while Bernard King (Nets) went #7 and Jack Sikma (Sonics) went #8. Whoops. Current Rutgers coach Eddie Jordan was the 33rd pick that year.

              1) Chris (Birdman) Andersen was signed by Miami off the street to two 10-day contracts in January of this year in this his 11th NBA season (7 of 10 previous seasons with Denver, three with New Orleans).

Credit to Pat Riley for finding a key piece to this team and signing him when any team could’ve had him. Andersen is a little like Dennis Rodman used to be; he’s a career 5.4 ppg scorer, but he provides energy to his team and he agitates opponents, and that’s a good thing.

                            • Preview: Angels (27-38) at Orioles (37-28)
                              Game: 3
Venue: Oriole Park at Camden Yards
                              Date: June 12, 2013 12:35 PM EDT

The Baltimore Orioles' success at home is coming with a slight margin for error.

Nick Markakis is doing his part to provide the difference.

Markakis looks to continue his impressive production at Camden Yards as the Orioles attempt to sweep this three-game series from the struggling Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday.

Baltimore (37-28) has won eight of nine at home after dropping seven in a row on its own field. The surge has included six wins by one or two runs, including Tuesday's 3-2 victory over the Angels (27-38) after beating them 4-3 a day earlier.

Markakis had two hits Tuesday and put the Orioles ahead for good with a two-out, two-run single in the seventh inning.

"You want to be in those situations," said Markakis, who's batting .346 with 10 RBIs when there are two outs and runners in scoring position.

The right fielder may play a part in Baltimore beating Los Angeles for a fifth straight meeting for the first time since it swept the six-game season series in 2010.

Markakis is hitting .347 at home, and he's batting .362 with 11 RBIs during a 14-game hitting streak there. That may only continue since he's hitting .344 in his past 16 matchups with the Angels, and he's 4 for 8 against scheduled starter Jerome Williams (4-2, 2.87 ERA).

The Orioles are scheduled to give the ball to Jason Hammel (7-4, 5.18), who is trying to avoid a third straight losing start.

The veteran right-hander turned in his shortest outing of the season June 1, lasting three-plus innings and allowing five runs and three homers in a 10-3 loss to Detroit.

Hammel, though, was much better Friday, yielding two runs in 6 2-3 innings in a 2-1 defeat at Tampa Bay.

He had been 6-0 with a 4.17 ERA over his first seven road games, including an 8-4 victory over the Angels on May 5 during which he gave up four runs in six innings.

Los Angeles continues to underachieve, losing nine of 11 and four in a row, one shy of its season-high skid from April 7-12.

Mike Trout can't be blamed for those struggles since he's hitting .352 - with 15 of his 31 hits going for extra bases - while driving in 13 runs and scoring 18 over the past 21 games.

Last year's AL Rookie of the Year is 9 for 22 with two homers, four doubles and four RBIs heading into the finale of a six-game road trip. He's 4 for 10 against Hammel, hitting a solo homer last month.

Williams is getting a spot start due to Saturday's doubleheader at Boston. He allowed three runs in the final three innings of that game as the Angels lost 7-2.

The right-hander is 3-2 with a 3.08 ERA over six starts this year, making the latest in a 2-0 loss to Houston on June 1. He allowed both runs in seven innings before being moved back to the bullpen due to the returns of Jered Weaver and Tommy Hanson.

Williams has won three of four starts against Baltimore with a 4.26 ERA, losing the most recent opposite Hammel on May 5. Williams gave up five runs and two homers in 4 1-3 innings.

He will be making his first appearance at Camden Yards since June 13, 2004, with San Francisco.

                              • Preview: Tigers (36-27) at Royals (29-33)
                                Game: 3
                                Venue: Ewing M. Kauffman Stadium
                                Date: June 12, 2013 2:10 PM EDT

Justin Verlander has not been very sharp of late, but he's still putting the Detroit Tigers in position to win.

The right-hander tries for a fifth straight winning start by continuing his success against the host Kansas City Royals on Wednesday.

Verlander (8-4, 3.71 ERA) has won four in a row despite giving up 32 hits and posting a 4.85 ERA. He's allowed three runs over seven innings in each of his last three starts, most recently during Friday's 7-5 win over Cleveland.

"I've still got a ways to go," Verlander told the Tigers' official website after he allowed all his runs in the fifth inning. "I've still got some work to do. But it's nice to be able to go out there and get wins for our ballclub."

Fortunately for Verlander, Detroit (36-27) has scored 34 runs in those four outings. He's received an average 7.20 runs of support this season.

Verlander is 15-2 with a 2.67 ERA in 24 starts versus Kansas City (29-33), including 6-0 with a 2.81 ERA in his last nine. He gave up two runs over seven innings of an 8-3, 10-inning loss to the Royals on April 25.

The Tigers ace is 9-2 with a 2.49 ERA in 14 starts at Kauffman Stadium, but was tagged for eight runs and 12 hits in 5 2-3 innings while not factoring in the decision of a 9-8 loss Aug. 28.

Scheduled Kansas City starter James Shields (2-6, 2.81) yielded three runs and five hits in eight innings in the April win over Verlander and the Tigers. That dropped his ERA to 3.63 while going 5-1 in 10 starts versus Detroit.

"Whenever you have some success against a team, you always have some confidence, but I don't look back at what I've done in the past," he told the Royals' official website.

Maybe that's because Shields hasn't won since April 30, but owns a 2.65 ERA while going 0-4 in seven starts since then. He's yielded three runs in 14 innings as the Royals won his last two outings. The eight runs Kansas City has totaled in those two equaled what it scored in Shields' previous five.

The right-hander gave up two runs and nine hits in seven innings of a 4-2 win over Houston on Friday.

"He threw great again and is about as consistent as they come," teammate Billy Butler said. "He competes his tail off out there. It's unfortunate we couldn't get him a win (Friday), but it's a team win. If he can pitch like that, he'll win his fair share of games."

Kansas City's season-high six-game winning streak ended with a 3-2 loss to Detroit on Tuesday. Victor Martinez's sacrifice fly snapped a tie in the eighth to help send the Tigers to their seventh win in 10 contests.

It was the first time in 21 innings the Kansas City bullpen allowed a run.

Detroit's Omar Infante added three hits, and is batting .375 in eight games this month. He's 10 for 19 in his last five against the Royals.

Butler is batting .418 with two homers against Verlander, but went 0 for 3 and was ejected for arguing a call after he struck out with a runner on second in the ninth Tuesday.

He's 1 for 10 in three games since going 9 for 18 in the previous five.
