While the reigning Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings are perfect at home in the playoffs, the Chicago Blackhawks have experienced more than their fair share of troubles on the road. The top-seeded Blackhawks will need to overcome an additional roadblock in Thursday's Game 4 of the Western Conference final with the loss of stud defenseman Duncan Keith. The 2010 Norris Trophy winner was suspended one game by the NHL on Wednesday, one day after he was whistled for high-sticking Los Angeles forward Jeff Carter during the second period of the Kings' 3-1 triumph in Game 3.

Carter suffered a laceration that required 20 stitches to close and a chipped tooth after Keith's blow to the head, which resulted in a double-minor penalty. Fifth-seeded Los Angeles won its eighth straight postseason game at Staples Center and 15th in a row dating back to the regular season to trim its deficit to 2-1 in the series. Presidents' Trophy-winning Chicago has dropped four of six contests away from the United Center.

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS: With Keith sitting out on Thursday, fellow defenseman Sheldon Brookbank likely will be inserted into the lineup for the first time since Chicago's regular-season finale against St. Louis on April 27. "I guess it's kind of like you're on call," Brookbank told the Chicago Sun-Times prior to Keith's suspension being announced. "You've got to stay ready and wait to hear the word if you're needed or not." Keith has one goal and nine assists while logging nearly 25 minutes of ice time per contest in the postseason. Brookbank netted one goal in 26 games this season.

ABOUT THE KINGS: After missing Games 2 and 3, Mike Richards showed signs of improvement from his upper-body injury by skating with the scratched players from the last contest. "Obviously, it's great to see him out there," Carter said. "I don't know anything more than that, other than he skated today. If we can get him back at some point in this series, whenever it is, it's a huge lift for our team." The Chicago Blackhawks and Boston Bruins are bidding to secure their second title in the young decade when the two Original Six rivals open their Stanley Cup final series at the United Center Wednesday. Chicago, which won its last championship in 2010 with a six-game triumph over the Philadelphia Flyers, began this season on a sensational 24-game point streak (21-0-3) en route to recording the second Presidents' Trophy in franchise history. The top-seeded Blackhawks breezed past the eighth-seeded Minnesota Wild in the first round, overcame a 3-1 series deficit to outlast the rival Detroit Red Wings in the second before dethroning the defending champion Los Angeles Kings in five games.

Boston also survived a scare by erasing a three-goal deficit in the third period of Game 7 before rallying past the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first round. The fourth-seeded Bruins battered another Original Six foe in the New York Rangers before holding the high-octane Pittsburgh Penguins to just two goals during a sweep of the Eastern Conference final. Boston is vying for its second title in three years, having defeated the Vancouver Canucks in seven games in 2011.

ABOUT THE BRUINS: While David Krejci boasts an NHL-leading nine goals and 21 points, the offensive contributions from the team's defensemen can not be overlooked. Blue-liner Johnny Boychuk leads the pack with five goals, rookie Torey Krug has added four and captain Zdeno Chara notched 11 points. "It's great," forward Brad Marchand said of Boston's defensemen, who have accounted for 15 of the team's 50 goals. "It really takes a lot of pressure off the forwards. ... It adds another element to our game and it opens up things for us down low because guys have to respect our defensemen." Tuukka Rask (12-4, 1.75 goals-against average, .943 save percentage) recorded his first two postseason shutouts in the Eastern Conference final - but has only one relief appearance in his young career versus the Blackhawks. After setting up Kane's winning tally, captain Jonathan Toews would like to put his scoring troubles to rest as well. Toews has just one goal and nine points in these playoffs - a far cry from the seven and 29 he recorded during his 2010 Conn Smythe Trophy-winning performance. Bryan Bickell and Patrick Sharp have collected eight goals apiece to pace the Blackhawks in 2013. Corey Crawford (12-4, 1.74 GAA, .935 save percentage) has silently put together solid numbers in net.

After putting forth a thrilling triple-overtime classic in the opener of the Stanley Cup final, the Boston Bruins and Chicago Blackhawks will look to provide an encore in Game 2 on Saturday when the Original Six rivals reconvene at the United Center. Andrew Shaw scored 12:08 into the third extra session as Presidents' Trophy-winning Chicago overcame a pair of two-goal deficits to post a 4-3 triumph in the fifth-longest game in Stanley Cup final history. Shaw ended the wild affair after tallying on a double deflection - although the game was tied at 3-3 in the third period as the puck caromed off the skate of Boston defenseman Andrew Ference and into the net.

"It's those two tough bounces that went in and there's nothing you can do," said Boston's Patrice Bergeron, who was honored as the King Clancy Memorial Trophy winner on Friday. The award is presented to the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice. The Bruins will need that leadership to rebound in Game 2 - unless they'll head back to Beantown in an 0-2 deficit in a Stanley Cup for the second time in three years.

ABOUT THE BRUINS: Top-line wing Nathan Horton participated in practice on Friday and is a game-time decision for Saturday's tilt. "He's day-to-day and that's where he is," Boston coach Claude Julien said of Horton, who sustained an unspecified upper-body injury after an exchange with Chicago defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson during the first overtime in Game 1. "That's why he practiced (Friday) and we'll have to make a decision on Nate (Saturday). But it was encouraging to see him out there today, and if he feels good, he's in the lineup." Should Horton missed the contest, Tyler Seguin would likely move to the top line - as he did during the latter stages of Game 1.

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS: Jonathan Toews was named as the Frank J. Selke Award winner, which goes to the league's best defensive forward. The Chicago captain claimed the award over finalists Bergeron and Detroit superstar Pavel Datsyuk. "To be able to go head to head with guys like that in the playoffs, and to know them from the past, you understand how much they mean to their teams and how much they contribute offensively and defensively," Toews said. Toews registered a stunning plus-28 rating in the regular season, but has mustered just one goal and set up eight others in the playoffs.

BOSTON (AP) - Tyler Seguin knew something had to be said.

And he was pretty sure it wouldn't be fit for public consumption.

After the Chicago Blackhawks badly outplayed the Boston Bruins in the first period of Game 2 of the Stanley Cup finals Saturday night, Seguin ditched the microphone he had been wearing as part of the TV broadcast. Then he headed back into the dressing room so the team could hash out its problems in peace.

``It was really a mix of everybody saying something,' Seguin said. ``I definitely knew it was coming, so I threw my shoulder pads in the training room and put a towel over it so no one could hear what we were saying. I think we needed that team wake-up call.'

The 2010 and '11 Stanley Cup champions were in Boston on Sunday for the third game of the best-of-seven finals on Monday night. Neither team skated on the off-day, instead choosing to conserve their energy after playing 10 periods while trading overtime victories that left the series tied at one game apiece.

``It's a lot about getting your rest,' Blackhawks defenseman Duncan Keith said after arriving in Boston about an hour late because of air traffic. ``It's not rocket science, you just get sleep and do as best you can and do all those little things to get ready to go.'

Chicago took the first one, winning a triple-OT thriller after 52 extra minutes. Then the Blackhawks started Game 2 by sending 19 shots - to Boston's four - at Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask in the first period to take a 1-0 lead.

``Not much needed to be said after that first period,' said Chris Kelly, who was one of the more vocal players in the dressing room. ``I think Tuukka pointed out that was a pretty terrible period by our team. If it wasn't for Tuukka, it would have been a lot worse.'

Neither Kelly nor coach Claude Julien nor any of the other Bruins would divulge what was said in the room.

But something snapped them out of their funk.

``Claude came in a little bit later, but I think we were all equally upset about that first period,' said Daniel Paille, who scored at 13:48 of overtime to end it. ``Definitely, Claude let us know and it was a way for us to wake up. And, also, players were keeping each other accountable, too, so it was good.'

Whatever was said, the Blackhawks managed only 15 shots over the next two-plus periods to Boston's 24. For the game, the Bruins had 50 hits - 10 by Milan Lucic - to 34 for Chicago.

``They're in the Stanley Cup final for a reason,' Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane said. ``It's not like you're going to have the momentum or dominate for three periods. Obviously, we'd love that.

``We know momentum is huge in the playoffs. You want to keep it as long as you can.'

But Blackhawks forward Dave Bolland said they relaxed after taking an early lead and dominating the first period. Another goal was disallowed when the referee lost sight of the puck and blew the whistle moments before it rolled under Rask and over the goal line.

``You always have to have your foot on the gas against this team,' Bolland said. ``They're a physical team. You see the guys they have. They're a big team and they play hard and they're going to hit, so you've got to be ready for that.'

Chicago coach Joel Quenneville said he didn't think the team lost momentum by having an extra day off before Game 1 on Wednesday and Game 2 on Saturday.

``We had a great first period,' he said. ``We did everything we wanted except get to two (goals).'

Boston rebounded after suffering a hard-luck 4-3 loss in triple-overtime in Game 1 as Daniel Paille netted the winner in the extra session for a 2-1 triumph on Saturday. Tuukka Rask weathered a furious first-period storm to finish with 33 saves in the victory.

Patrick Sharp scored his ninth goal of the postseason to pull into a share of the league lead with Boston's David Krejci, but the Presidents' Trophy-winning Blackhawks were unable to solve Rask again. The netminder's stingy ways were enough to prevent the Bruins from falling into an 0-2 deficit in the Stanley Cup final for the second time in three years. "I think it's just as good, there's no doubt," Boston coach Claude Julien responded when asked to compare the postseason run of Rask to predecessor Tim Thomas. "Tuukka's done an outstanding job. To me, he's been as much a contributor to our team as Tim was two years ago." Thomas guided the Bruins past the Canucks in the 2011 Stanley Cup final.

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS: Chicago is no stranger to going the extra mile, having posted a double-overtime series-clinching victory over reigning champion Los Angeles in the Western Conference final before enduring the first two tilts of this series. Defenseman Duncan Keith has logged a mind-boggling 121:01 of ice time in the last three contests, but isn't too worried about getting run down. "I think as players, we've gone through things like that before. It's just about getting your rest," he said. "It's not rocket science. You just need to get sleep and eat the best you can. Do all those little things to help prepare so you feel good and ready to go."

ABOUT THE BRUINS: A line change and an alert play by Tyler Seguin allowed Chris Kelly to end a streak of 21 consecutive postseason games without a point and 23 straight without a goal. "He's been snake-bitten for quite a while and when you don't score, eventually, you get scored on and the minuses keep creeping up," Julien said of Kelly. "That was certainly something that bothered him. I thought he played well (Saturday)."

BOSTON (AP) - Tuukka Rask shut out the Chicago Blackhawks in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup finals on Monday night and got enough help from the Bruins' offense to do it without another exhausting overtime.

After playing four extra periods in the first two games, the Bruins made an early night of it with second-period goals by Daniel Paille and Patrice Bergeron to win 2-0 and take a 2-1 lead in the Stanley Cup finals.

Rask stopped 28 shots for his third shutout of the 2013 playoffs.

Corey Crawford made 33 saves for the Blackhawks.

Game 4 is Wednesday night in Boston before the matchup of Original Six teams returns to Chicago for a fifth game. The teams split the first two games there, with the Blackhawks winning Game 1 in triple-overtime and the Bruins stealing home-ice advantage on Paille's goal in the first OT of the second game.

But this time the intrigue came before the opening faceoff instead of after the end of regulation.

Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara and Chicago forward Marian Hossa were both injured during warmups. But while Chara needed just some stitches after his collision with teammate Milan Lucic, Hossa was a late scratch with an unspecified injury.

Hossa, who has three game-winning goals in the playoffs this year, was tied for the team lead with 15 playoff points and was third on the Blackhawks with 17 goals during the regular season.

It was a loss the Blackhawks couldn't afford.

Not with Rask stopping everything that came his way.

The Bruins' goalie, who was a backup to Conn Smythe-winner Tim Thomas in the team's 2011 Stanley Cup run, didn't face as difficult a test as in the first period of Game 2, when the Blackhawks sent 19 shots at him but managed just one goal. But he stymied them all game and got some help from the post on Bryan Bickell's shot with 42 seconds left in the game.

The puck caromed off the right post and the goal light flickered on briefly, but play continued for another 30 seconds before the whistle blew and the game degenerated into fisticuffs. Chara was on top of Viktor Stalberg, pounding away, and Andrew Shaw got the better of Brad Marchand.

By the time it was all sorted out, the benches were a little emptier but the scoring column for Chicago was still blank.

After a scoreless first period, the Bruins made it 1-0 when Paille slapped in the puck at 2:13 of the second, falling to one knee for extra power. It stayed that way until late in the second, when the Bruins picked up their first power plays of the game on two nearly identical plays, with a Bruin racing to the net and a ********* undercutting his skates and sending him crashing into the left post.

Boston set up their offense during the 11-second two-man advantage, and just five seconds after it expired - but before Dave Bolland was able to get back into the play - Jaromir Jagr slid one across the middle, past Lucic in the center to Bergeron on the other side for the easy one-timer.

It was Jagr's 197th career playoff point in 199 games, moving him into sole possession of fifth place on the NHL's all-time postseason points list.

Notes: Jagr had been tied with Paul Coffey on the career postseason scoring list. ... Two of Jagr's playoff points came on goals scored against the Blackhawks when they were swept by Penguins in 1992 final. ... In order to take a step toward solving the Boston Bruins, the Chicago Blackhawks will need to tackle the task that is Tuukka Rask. The goaltender has kept the President's Trophy-winning Blackhawks off the scoreboard for over 122 minutes as the Bruins have claimed a 2-1 edge in the Stanley Cup final. After Rask recorded his third postseason shutout by stopping all 28 shots he faced in a 2-0 triumph on Monday, Chicago will look to get the better of the young stud in Wednesday's Game 4 and end Boston's seven-game home winning streak - thereby evening the series in the process.

The Blackhawks are expected to receive a boost with the "likely" return of Marian Hossa, according to coach Joel Quenneville. Hossa, who shares the team lead with 15 points, was a late scratch with an upper-body injury on Monday - despite taking part in the pre-game warmup. An ailing power play continues to plague Chicago, which has failed to score on all 11 opportunities with the man advantage in the series and 20 consecutive dating back to Game 2 of the Western Conference final versus the Los Angeles Kings.

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS: After sharing the team lead in goals with Patrick Kane in the regular season, captain Jonathan Toews has mustered all of one during the playoffs. "Whether it's him or our power play, offensively I think we're all a little gun shy in that area," Quenneville said. "One thing with Johnny, you can always measure how he's going to be competing because game in, game out, he leaves it out there." Quenneville admitted that he has considered reuniting Kane and Toews on the same line - as he did briefly against the Kings. The presence of towering Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara has played a part in splitting the two.

ABOUT THE BRUINS: Credit Patrice Bergeron for adding to Chicago's troubles as last season's Selke Trophy winner scored a power-play goal and won 24 of 28 faceoffs in Game 3. Bergeron has tallied twice with the man advantage in the Stanley Cup - and has won the respect of his teammates in spades. "(He) is by far the best two-way centerman in the league," Brad Marchand said. "He proves it night in and night out how special he is as a two-way guy." BOSTON (AP) - Chicago Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville didn't want to talk about the injury that forced him to scratch forward Marian Hossa from the Stanley Cup finals against the Boston Bruins.

And why not?

``I think that's self-explanatory,' Quenneville said, once again declining to explain the secrecy that is as much a part of the NHL culture as playoff beards and Zambonis.

Hossa's surprise scratch from Game 3 and the one-word explanation - ``upper' - for the part of his body that was injured is part of a long-running cat-and-mouse game NHL teams play. The theory goes that any revealing information about injuries could become a competitive disadvantage.

Hossa is expected to play in Game 4, Quenneville said Tuesday, but only after making it clear that ``I'm not going to get (into) exactly what the injury is or where it occurred.'

``It's sort of a secret society in the hockey world and in the injury world,' Blackhawks forward Dave Bolland said. ``You don't want other teams having any injury information at all.'

Asked if he had seen Hossa or had a chance to talk to him, Bolland said, ``I don't know.'

You don't know if you've seen him or talked to him?

``I don't know if I've seen him,' Bolland repeated with a sly smile.

Tuukka Rask stopped 28 shots from the depleted Blackhawks to help the Bruins win 2-0 on Monday night and move two wins from their second Stanley Cup title in three seasons.

Game 4 is Wednesday night in Boston before the series returns to Chicago for a fifth game.

Hossa's mysterious injury may have been a turning point in Game 3, but it's hardly unusual in the secretive world of hockey injuries. Players and coaches say they just don't talk about what's hurting, partly because they don't want to seem weak in a sport where they hit each other for a living.

But mostly they don't want let the other team know where to aim.

``If I'm going out to battle and I have an injury to any part of my body, I don't want the other side to know what it is,' Bruins forward Shawn Thornton said.

Injury information can also help the opponent strategize. Quenneville was so concerned about giving the Bruins advance notice of even a few minutes that he didn't let substitute Ben Smith skate in the warmup even though there was a chance he would need to play.

``I just didn't want to tip our hand that there's something going on,' the coach said.

``Ben was ready. I knew he was doing everything,' Quenneville said. ``We were hopeful that Hoss was playing, and Ben was doing everything to get ready. He was ready.'

No hard feelings, Bruins coach Claude Julien said. After all, he would do - and has done - the same thing.

``I respect that from other teams. When you're playing against each other, you know exactly where everybody is coming from,' Julien said.

``There's times where you have to protect your players, and I understand it. I know it's frustrating for you guys as media. You're trying to share that information. The most important thing for us, we can take the heat for that, is protecting your players.'

So, how to tell if an injury is minor? When a team actually admits it exists.

``I'll share one with you: Yesterday in a warmup, Zdeno Chara fell down, got a cut over the eye,' Julien said, to laughter, of the injury to his captain that had already been confirmed and reported. ``I'll let you know about that. That's not a hidden injury.'

The Bruins also confirmed without delay the broken leg that knocked Gregory Campbell out of the Eastern Conference finals against Pittsburgh. But that was only because Campbell was out for the season after taking a shot to his leg on national TV and struggling to get off the ice.

``If it's something that doesn't put your player in danger, I don't see why you shouldn't talk about it,' Julien said.

Players say they don't have to be told not to discuss injuries; they grow up with the culture in junior and minor leagues. Blackhawks forward Patrick Sharp said he doesn't remember when he first learned the subject was off-limits, but it was long before he reached the NHL.

And hockey players are not alone.

``It's not just here,' Thornton said. ``I don't think Bill Belichick is (listing) all the injuries they have, either.'

But even the notoriously uncommunicative New England Patriots coach is required by NFL rules to say what body part is injured. NHL coaches have to narrow it only to ``upper body' or ``lower body,' which means a player with a concussion and one with a broken finger would have the same diagnosis.

During the playoffs, information is even more scarce.

``It's that time of year where everybody's kind of battling. I would say that not just injuries, strategy, all that kind of information we're not going to talk about,' Sharp said. ``It's all part of being this close to the ultimate goal.'

And does he have any injuries he cares to mention?

``No comment.'
