  • Preview: Sharks (0-0) at Kings (0-0)

    Date: May 28, 2013 9:00 PM EDT

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) - Although Dustin Brown will always remember raising the Stanley Cup above his head last year, he also remembers the pain of a first-round playoff loss to San Jose one year before the Los Angeles Kings became champions.

So even though the Los Angeles captain is playing in his first Game 7 in the Stanley Cup playoffs on Tuesday night, he's acutely aware of the stakes when the Kings host the Sharks in the grand finale to a grueling all-California series.

``You don't know what you're playing for until you've won it,' Brown said Monday after the Kings returned from a 2-1 loss in Game 6.

``So my perspective on the playoffs this year has been completely different from my perspectives the previous years, because I don't think I fully understood what exactly I was playing for until we put ourselves over the top. It's kind of the same way with losing. It's hard to understand what it takes until you lose.'

For the first time in two years, the Kings are one game away from playoff elimination. They never even faced a potential elimination game during their 16-4 rampage to the Cup last year, but the Sharks have pushed them to the brink while moving one win away from their third trip to the Western Conference finals in four years.

The home team has won every game in the series, although home ice meant little to the Kings last season while winning the title as an eighth seed.

They're hoping the Staples Center ice means everything in Game 7 - and it has been awfully friendly lately, with 13 consecutive home victories over the past two months and seven straight home playoff wins dating to last year's Cup clincher.

Although the Kings and Sharks are separated by just a 45-minute flight, the home team has dominated this series lately, winning all four regular-season meetings as well.

In fact, the home team has won 15 of the clubs' past 16 meetings in the past two seasons.

``I guess the odds are on our side, but we know anything can happen,' Kings center Anze Kopitar said. ``Everyone wants to win these types of games, and you want to be the hero.'

After three wins apiece, the series has ended up just as both teams expected before it began two weeks ago. Neither team can pull away, with goaltending and special teams largely deciding each matchup.

Although the series has been tight throughout, it hasn't been disproportionately dramatic. The team scoring the first goal has won every game of the series, and only one major comeback has been made: Los Angeles scored two power-play goals in the final minutes to steal Game 2 after blowing an early two-goal lead.

The Sharks forced Game 7 by winning three of the series' past four games, all by a 2-1 margin. While the Kings can rely on their championship pedigree, San Jose has momentum and plenty of veteran experience.

``It's definitely a stressful situation, but it's the most fun I've had playing hockey,' said Sharks defenseman Dan Boyle, who has won a Game 7 three times in his career, including a Stanley Cup win with Tampa Bay in 2004.

``I've got to do it three times now. It's the best time to play. I just try not to make it a bigger deal than what it actually is. Go out and enjoy it. Just don't overthink it, or it can get the best of you.'

With the Kings' brand-new Stanley Cup banner hanging over the Staples Center ice, it's easy to forget the Sharks have been in countless pressure-packed playoff situations, even if they've never won the Cup.

San Jose is hoping to extend its ninth straight playoff appearance into another conference final run, while the Kings had won just one playoff round in 17 seasons before last summer's phenomenal championship run.

The Sharks played a Game 7 two years ago, beating Detroit at home in the second round, and their veteran newcomers have been there, too: San Jose's Scott Gomez is about to play in the 10th Game 7 of his career.

``The main thing is that you can't change your game,' Gomez said. ``Do what got you here. Obviously, emotions are going to be running high. Family, friends, everyone - all eyes are on it. The team that can control (emotions) the most, and it sounds easier than it is, usually that's the team that has success.'

The Kings have home-ice advantage in a playoff series for the first time in 21 years against the Sharks, who have made the playoffs 14 times in the past 15 seasons. Los Angeles hasn't played a Game 7 on home ice since 1989, when Wayne Gretzky's Kings knocked the Edmonton Oilers out of the first round.

After an optional skate Monday, the Kings uniformly downplayed the importance of home ice in Game 7 beyond their crowd's support, yet they've been awfully tough to beat at Staples during their title defense. They lost just four times in regulation during the regular season.

Many of the Kings' top players will be in their first Game 7 in the NHL - including Kopitar, Brown and goalie Jonathan Quick - although most have played in similarly crucial games in junior hockey and international competition.

``The worst thing going into a Game 7 is being uptight and stressed about it,' Brown said. ``You should be excited to play in a game like tomorrow night. That's where heroes are made.'

Kopitar's favorite Game 7 memory comes from watching his father, Matjaz, who scored two goals and added another in a shootout to claim a national title back home in Slovenia.

``I've got blood under my skin just like a Canadian,' Kopitar said. ``I don't think it's any different over in Europe, either. Everybody wants to be in these types of games, and you want to raise the level of play, and eventually you want to be the hero in these types of games.'

Sharks at Kings: What bettors need to know
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Jose Sharks at Los Angeles Kings (-152, 4.5)

      Best-of-seven series tied 3-3.

In order to advance in the Stanley Cup playoffs, the sixth-seeded San Jose Sharks will have to do something that has yet to be accomplished in their Western Conference second-round series with the Los Angeles Kings - post a victory on the road. The Pacific Division rivals meet for Game 7 at Staples Center on Tuesday, with a trip to the conference final at stake. The home team has captured each of the first six contests, with San Jose recording three 2-1 triumph at HP Pavilion and fifth-seeded Los Angeles winning all three games in its building - two via shutout.

The Sharks were in excellent position to register a road win in Game 2, rallying from a two-goal deficit to take a 3-2 lead before allowing Kings captain Dustin Brown to score the tying goal during a 5-on-3 power play with 1:43 remaining in the third period. Trevor Lewis tallied with a one-man advantage 22 seconds later to give Los Angeles a 2-0 series lead. Logan Couture netted the game-winning goal in each of the next two contests in San Jose - including one in overtime - to even the matchup, and the clubs traded home triumphs to force the decisive seventh game. In addition to attempting to be the first to record a road win in the series, the Sharks are looking to accomplish another first - notch a victory at Staples Center. The Kings, who are attempting to become the first team to win back-to-back championships since the 1997-98 Detroit Red Wings, are a perfect 6-0 at home in the playoffs and have won 13 straight on home ice since falling to Vancouver on March 23.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, NBCSN, TSN, RDS

ABOUT THE SHARKS: Adam Burish returned to the lineup after missing the first five games of the series with a hand injury and registered a team-high four shots on goal while winning all four of his faceoffs in 9:41 of ice time. "It was fun to get back in, it was fun to contribute," the right wing said. "Obviously, it was fun to get a big win at home. It was loud. The fans were great and it was a fun one to be a part of." The fact the home team has held serve in the series is not lost on coach Todd McLellan. "It's followed a script," he said. "It's time for us to get there and change this story." Center Scott Gomez has the most Game 7 experience among the Sharks, appearing in nine. Gomez's teams have won six of those contests. San Jose is 0-9 in series in which it lost the first two games.

ABOUT THE KINGS: Mike Richards believes playing at home gives Los Angeles the edge in Game 7. "We're a confident, comfortable team at home," the center said. "The fans are loud and behind us. It should be an exciting game." Defenseman Rob Scuderi is not surprised the series has unfolded in the manner in which it has. "Every game has been close," he said. "I'm sure it's not a shock it's come to a Game 7. I'm sure both teams didn't want it to go this far." Los Angeles has allowed fewer than four goals in 32 consecutive playoff games. Center Jordan Nolan was in the lineup Sunday after being a healthy scratch for the previous three games. Nolan delivered four hits in 7:28 of ice time.

      TRENDS:

      * Sharks are 0-5 in the last five meetings in Los Angeles.
      * Under is 4-0 in the last four meetings.
      * Kings are 6-1 in their last seven games playing on a single day of rest.

      OVERTIME

      1. The winner will take on either Detroit or the Chicago Blackhawks in the conference final. Whomever is victorious Tuesday will have home-ice advantage should the seventh-seeded Red Wings advance.

      2. Los Angeles is participating in its first Game 7 since 2002, when it lost to Colorado in the first round. The Kings' last seventh game at home was in the opening round in 1989, when they defeated defending champion Edmonton.

      3. San Jose is 5-2 in Game 7s, with its most recent seventh contest being a 3-2 victory over Detroit at home on May 12, 2011. The Kings own a 3-4 record in Game 7s.

Los Angeles Kings at Chicago Blackhawks (-160, 5)

Jonathan Quick authored an amazing performance en route to securing the Conn Smythe Trophy during the Los Angeles Kings' Stanley Cup-winning season in 2012. The Connecticut native is penning quite the sequel in 2013 as the fifth-seeded Kings visit the United Center for Game 1 of their Western Conference final against the top-seeded Chicago Blackhawks. Quick helped Los Angeles turn aside fourth-seeded St. Louis in six games and sixth-seeded San Jose in seven behind three shutouts, an NHL-best 1.50 goals-against average and .948 save percentage.

While Quick has been sensational in the playoffs, he was rather pedestrian as the Kings dropped two of three meetings to the Blackhawks this season. Corey Crawford, who is Quick's counterpart, also has posted impressive numbers in the playoffs - sitting second in goals-against average (1.70) and third in save percentage (.938). Crawford helped Presidents' Trophy-winning Chicago to a five-game series victory over eighth-seeded Minnesota in the first round before pulling out an overtime victory in Game 7 against Original Six rival Detroit in the second.

TV: 5 p.m. ET, NBC Sports, TSN, RDS

ABOUT THE KINGS: During last season's run to the Cup, Los Angeles made itself at home on the road by winning its first 10 games. The tables have turned in 2013 as the Kings have won just once in six contests away from the Staples Center. Los Angeles could welcome the return of Jarret Stoll, who missed the final six contests of the second round after absorbing a brutal hit from San Jose's Raffi Torres. The Kings are led by Mike Richards' team-leading 10 points and fellow former Philadelphia star Jeff Carter's five goals. Defenseman Drew Doughty is logging nearly 28 minutes of ice time.

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS: After being held off the scoresheet in four straight contests, Patrick Sharp recorded his seventh goal of the postseason in Wednesday's Game 7 - tying him with Pittsburgh teammates Sidney Crosby and Pascal Dupuis for the league lead. Perhaps Sharp's scoring touch can find its way to captain Jonathan Toews, who has just one goal in the playoffs after matching Patrick Kane with a team-high 23 during the season. Toews did collect a goal and an assist in all three meetings against Los Angeles in 2013.

                TRENDS:

                * Kings are 1-11 in their last 12 road games.
                * Under is 7-0-2 in Kings’ last nine road games.
                * Blackhawks are 1-4 in their last five vs. Pacific foes.

                OVERTIME

                1. Los Angeles has won 14 consecutive games at the Staples Center, although Chicago opened the season with a 5-2 triumph on Jan. 19. The Blackhawks
posted a 3-2 victory at home on Feb. 17 before dropping a 5-4 decision at the United Center on March 25.

                2. Chicago advanced to the conference final for the first time since 2010. The Blackhawks won that series and felled the Flyers in six games to seize the Stanley Cup.

                3. Chicago has killed off a league-best 97.6 percent of its short-handed situations in the postseason.

Boston Bruins at Pittsburgh Penguins (-170, 5.5)

Jarome Iginla carefully weighed his options before accepting a trade to the Pittsburgh Penguins over two months ago. In doing so, the veteran spurned the advances of several teams - notably the fourth-seeded Boston Bruins. While Iginla has added to the top-seeded Penguins' powerful punch, he'll face the team he hit in the mouth in the visiting Bruins on Saturday in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference final. The teams are meeting in the playoffs for the first time since 1992. Pittsburgh won that series en route to the latter half of its back-to-back Stanley Cup titles.

"When I was faced with that choice and had the opportunity of being very fortunate to have a couple of really good teams (trading for me), I knew the possibility that this would be the case," Iginla said earlier in the week. With four goals and eight assists, the veteran did his part in helping Pittsburgh eliminate the eighth-seeded New York Islanders in six games before ousting seventh-seeded Ottawa in five. Boston defeated a pair of Original Six rivals to advance to the conference final. The Bruins nearly squandered a 3-1 series lead in the first round before rallying past fifth-seeded Toronto. They had considerably less difficulty with the sixth-seeded New York Rangers, eliminating them in five.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBC, CBC, RDS

ABOUT THE BRUINS: While hardly considered chopped liver, Jaromir Jagr was the "consolation prize" for the Bruins at the trade deadline - but the former Penguin has yet to score a goal in 12 postseason games. Boston has been bolstered by the offensive contributions from its defensemen - notably rookie Torey Krug, who has scored three of his four goals on the power play. Fellow blue-liner Johnny Boychuk also has four tallies - not a shabby accomplishment considering he had just one goal in 44 games during the regular season. David Krejci leads the league with 17 points (five goals, 12 assists) and is a plus-9.

ABOUT THE PENGUINS: Offense hasn't been the issue in the Steel City, as the Penguins have scored 46 goals - including 13 in their final two contests. Norris Trophy candidate Kris Letang has an NHL-best 13 assists, leads all defensemen with 16 points and shares the team lead in that category with reigning Hart Trophy winner Evgeni Malkin. Captain Sidney Crosby has matched teammate Pascal Dupuis and Chicago's Patrick Sharp with a league-leading seven tallies and former 40-goal scorer James Neal has scored five times in his last two games.

                TRENDS:

                * Bruins are 0-6 in the last six meetings.
                * Penguins are 5-0 in their last five Conference Finals games.
                * Under is 7-2 in the last nine meetings.

                OVERTIME

                1. The Penguins posted a 3-2 victory over the Bruins on March 12 and a 2-1 triumph five days later. They also recorded a 3-2 decision on April 20 - one day
after the scheduled contest was postponed as authorities conducted a manhunt for one of the suspects involved in the Boston Marathon bombings.

                2. Pittsburgh is making its first appearance in the Eastern Conference final since 2009 - while Boston reached this stage for the second time in three years.

                3. Penguins G Tomas Vokoun has won six of seven starts and recorded a 1.85 goals-against average since replacing former Stanley Cup-winning goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury. Bruins G Tuukka Rask has won eight of 12 postseason outings and boasts a .928 save percentage.

                  • Blackhawks, Kings collide in West finals

                    May 31, 2013

CHICAGO (AP) - For all the difficulties they endured along the way, the Chicago Blackhawks and Los Angeles Kings are still standing.

They might want to buckle up, though. The ride could get even wilder.

The Blackhawks and Kings are poised for what could be a tight and lengthy Western Conference finals, with Game 1 at the United Center on Saturday.

The Kings already have more playoff losses than they did a year ago when they went on a 16-4 run through the postseason to capture the Stanley Cup as an eighth seed.

``I cited critical moments last year,'' Kings general manager Dean Lombardi said. ``There were several of them this year where they were severely tested. They keep finding a way to fight through, as they've done at times during the playoffs. `'

                    The Blackhawks?

All they did was rally from a 3-1 deficit to beat Detroit in the conference semifinals, taking Game 7 by 2-1 on Brent Seabrook's overtime goal to remain in the hunt for their second title in four years.

``You don't draw it up, you don't plan to win a seven-game series coming back from 3-1,'' Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews said. ``Looking back, I think it is a good thing for our team to have gone through what we just went through, to kind of be pushed to the end, for a moment (to) feel like that was it. You have certain negative thoughts that kind of creep in. You try not to think about them, that you're up against a tough team and the odds are against you.

``But we stayed positive. We stuck with it. We just had that attitude that you take it one shift at the same time, you win one game at a time, anything can happen.''

The next challenge is a big one, too. No goalie is more on his game at the moment than the Kings' Jonathan Quick. All the 2012 Conn Smythe Trophy winner has done is allow just 20 goals in 13 postseason games while carrying Los Angeles to its second straight conference final.

He leads the playoffs in goals-against average (1.50), save percentage (.948) and shutouts (three), and the Kings have needed it with their offense generating little.

They're averaging just two goals per game in the postseason, and they realize they need to rediscover their scoring touch. That wasn't an issue during the regular season, when they were 10th in the NHL and boasted the Western Conference's top goal scorer in Jeff Carter.

Getting center Jarret Stoll back would help. He suffered an apparent concussion on an illegal hit to the head in the series opener against San Jose and has been sidelined since. He skated with the team this week, but coach Darryl Sutter had no update Friday.

``He's been our best faceoff guy all year, so that's one of our strengths, and on the (penalty kill), even on the (power play) if he does play,'' center Anze Kopitar said. ``It gives us a right-handed faceoff man that we didn't have.''

Despite their difficulties putting the puck in the net, the Kings have gotten by. They dropped the first two games at St. Louis and needed seven to take out San Jose in the semifinals, with all four wins coming at home. It was a physical series that probably didn't earn many style points. And to that, the Kings basically say so what.

``Well, I don't really care what you think, if that has anything to do with it,'' Sutter said. ``Is that what they're saying in Boston, too?''

Dustin Brown added: ``We could bore you all to death. If we keep on winning, I could care less what people think of our game. We found something that's successful for us as a group, and sometimes people don't think it's exciting. It depends on your opinion.''

Now, it's the Blackhawks with the home-ice advantage and games on back-to-back days in their arena. Clearly, they see an opportunity there.

But they also had their difficulties with a physical Detroit team, and here come the hard-hitting Kings.

``Yeah. They're big, and they do a good job protecting the net,'' Patrick Sharp said. ``They're physical, as well, so we've got to be aware of that. Hopefully we can use our speed and our skill to kind of neutralize that, but this is all just talk. We'll see what happens this series.''

                    • NHL's final 4 feature last 4 Cup champions

                      May 31, 2013

The final four teams in the NHL playoffs feature the last four champions for the second time in league history and for the first time since 1945, when the league consisted of just the Original Six.

Chicago hosts the defending champion Los Angeles Kings in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals on Saturday and Pittsburgh plays Boston at home in the Eastern Conference finals opener in prime time that night.

Before the puck drops for the double-header, the only one scheduled unless both series go to Game 7 on June 12, here are six storylines to watch.

                      ---

THE KINGS' QUEST: Los Angeles is attempting to become the first team to repeat as Stanley Cup champions since the Detroit Red Wings in 1997 and 1998, and the first franchise to win two titles in the NHL's eight-season, salary-cap era. The fifth-seeded Kings can take a big step toward accomplishing the feat if they can finish off top-seeded Chicago, which was pushed to the brink of elimination by seventh-seeded Detroit.

                      ---

QUICK IS THE NAME: Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick has been tough to beat - again - but can he keep up the pace for his offensively challenged team? The reigning Conn Smythe winner is leading the league with three shutouts and a .948 save percentage in the playoffs and he's giving up just 1.5 goals a game. Los Angeles, meanwhile, isn't helping Quick out much offensively, averaging just two goals a game to trail the other three teams still playing in scoring by a large margin.

                      ---

POWERLESS PLAY: Chicago's penalty-killers have been almost perfect, allowing Detroit and Minnesota to combine for only one goal on 41 power plays. Goalie Corey Crawford has had a lot to do with that, helping the Blackhawks make a run after their championship season in 2010 was followed up by consecutive first-round exits. The only time Chicago has given up a power-play goal was in Game 4 against the Red Wings, who went on to win and take a 3-1 lead in the series.

                      ---

POTENT PENGUINS: Superstar Sidney Crosby has been simply spectacular with seven goals. No one could've guessed his teammate, Pascal Dupuis, also would have seven goals - to share the league lead - to match his scoring total from the previous five postseasons combined. The duo isn't doing it alone. Kris Letang has an NHL-high 13 assists and 16 points to match Evgeni Malkin for the most on the team. Jarome Iginla has 12 points in 11 postseason games, slightly surpassing his production in 13 regular-season games after being traded to Pittsburgh.

                      ---

CAN HE KEEP IT UP? The fourth-seeded Bruins' best chance to eliminate the East's top team is to figure out a way to get to goalie Tomas Vokoun, who is 6-1 since replacing Marc-Andre Fleury in the first round against the New York Islanders. The 36-year-old Vokoun, playing on his third team in three seasons, has played in his way into being in a postseason net for the first time since 2007 with Nashville. Boston's David Krejci leads the league with 17 points to surpass his strong pace during Boston's 2011 championship season.

                      ---

ISN'T THAT SPECIAL: Pittsburgh has been the NHL's best team on the power play, scoring on 13 of 46 chances, to move halfway toward its goal of winning it all again for the first time since 2009. Boston, meanwhile, has allowed seven goals in 37 short-handed situations, the most of the four teams still playing. The Bruins will likely lean a lot on defenseman Zdeno Chara to slow down the Penguins. The 2009 Norris Trophy winner is averaging 29-plus minutes a game, more than any active player in this postseason.

                      • Preview: Bruins (0-0) at Penguins (0-0)
                        Date: June 01, 2013 8:00 PM EDT

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The NHL's most unlikely postseason success story is nearly bald, his hairline an unwitting casualty to three decades spent hidden under a goaltender's mask.

All those long winters - including 16 in the best league in the world - never led to long springs, however, for Tomas Vokoun.

                        Until now.

Halfway through the 2013 Stanley Cup playoffs the two-time All-Star turned journeyman backup holds the key to the Pittsburgh Penguins' playoff hopes. He is, for the first time in his life, the ``hot goalie' during the most important time of year.

Heading into Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals against the Boston Bruins Saturday night, Vokoun's numbers appear to be a misprint. Seven starts. Six wins. One very stoic and largely anonymous presence at the back of Pittsburgh's star-laden attack.

Given a week to ponder his remarkable run after taking over for struggling Marc-Andre Fleury in Game 5 of the first-round series against the New York Islanders, Vokoun insists he's trying not to think about what it all means, with varying levels of success.

``You just know that you're playing well, you're trying to do the right things,' Vokoun said. ``You try not to treat it any differently, even if you know the stakes are just getting bigger.'

It's a phenomenon unique to goaltenders this time of year. For all the talk about the importance of playoff experience, the guys in the back of the net can sometimes seem immune to the pressure.

Vokoun never played on a team that made it past the opening round of the postseason until Pittsburgh ousted the Islanders in six games three weeks ago. He was hardly overcome by the stage in the second round against Ottawa, allowing all of 11 goals in five games, including a pair of of meaningless scores after the Penguins already had things well in hand during Game 4 and 5 routs.

NHL history is littered with callow goalies who have ended up lifting the Cup. Martin Brodeur was 22. Patrick Roy was 20. Ken Dryden was 23. Jonathan Quick was 4-8 in the playoffs before going 16-4 and leading the Los Angeles Kings to the championship at 26.

Vokoun is at the opposite end of his career but enjoying the same kind of coming-out party. It's uncharted territory for a player acquired for a mere seventh-round pick last summer as an insurance plan should Fleury falter.

``He has been one of the better goalies in NHL,' Pittsburgh general manager Ray Shero said. ``He just happened to be playing in Nashville and Florida, not in the media spotlight.'

One that's certainly going to ratchet up over the next two weeks. It can get unnerving. For proof, he need only look 180 feet down the ice on Saturday night at Boston's Tuukka Rask.

The Bruins were on the cusp of a berth in the conference finals in 2010 with a 22-year-old Rask leading the way. Boston took a 3-0 lead over Philadelphia in the second round when the season suddenly imploded. A 5-4 overtime loss in Game 4 morphed into three more defeats, including a 4-3 collapse in Game 7 when Rask squandered a three-goal, first-period lead.

Though he played 29 games the following season, he didn't see a second of ice time in the playoffs as Tim Thomas carried the Bruins to their first title in nearly four decades.

``It's different if you're playing or if you're not,' he said. ``You had something to do with it on the ice.'

Rask's role (and his view) will be much more involved this time around. And Boston coach Claude Julien thinks Rask may have turned a corner of sorts in the second round against the New York Rangers. Boston bolted to a 3-0 lead once again and went up 2-0 early in Game 4. The Rangers recovered - thanks in part to a curious goal in which Rask appeared to screw himself into the ice - to win in overtime.

Rask bounced back in Game 5, turning aside 28 of 29 shots as the Bruins moved on and perhaps obliterated any lingering doubts about their goaltender's resilience.

``That Game 4 could've been a lot more devastating than it was,' coach Claude Julien said. ``How he rebounded in Game 5 shows me that there's no issues there.'

Of course, the high-flying Penguins have a way of creating issues. Pittsburgh peppering Evgeni Nabokhov and Craig Anderson into early exits a combined four times during the first two rounds while averaging 4.27 goals per game, the highest scoring average at this point in the playoffs in 20 years.

A highly efficient power play and a remarkably skilled roster led by former MVPs Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin helps. Still, for all its considerable firepower, Pittsburgh is not invulnerable. The Penguins were similarly loaded three years ago when they ran into Montreal's unheralded Jaroslav Halak in the second round. The then-24-year-old became impenetrable as the series wore on and the Canadiens won in seven games.

The memory of that stunning failure remains fresh and the Penguins are well aware Rask and Boston's smothering defense could provide an even more impenetrable shell.

``We have to make (Rask) uncomfortable,' Pittsburgh coach Dan Bylsma said.

In the end, whichever goaltender finds his comfort zone is the one that will extend his team's season into the first days of summer. It's a ride Vokoun is intent on enjoying, one the oldest player on the Stanley Cup favorite thought may never come.

``This is what you play for,' he said. ``It's taken a long time to get here. Yeah there's pressure but really it's just about doing your job.

                        ``That's all I can do.'

                        So far, so good.

                        • Preview: Kings (0-0) at Blackhawks (0-0)

                          Date: June 01, 2013 5:00 PM EDT

CHICAGO (AP) - For all the difficulties they endured along the way, the Chicago Blackhawks and Los Angeles Kings are still standing.

They might want to buckle up, though. The ride could get even wilder.

The Blackhawks and Kings are poised for what could be a tight and lengthy Western Conference finals, with Game 1 at the United Center on Saturday.

The Kings already have more playoff losses than they did a year ago when they went on a 16-4 run through the postseason to capture the Stanley Cup as an eighth seed.

``I cited critical moments last year,' Kings general manager Dean Lombardi said.

``You don't draw it up, you don't plan to win a seven-game series coming back from 3-1,' Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews said.

We just had that attitude that you take it one shift at the same time, you win one game at a time, anything can happen.'

``He's been our best faceoff guy all year, so that's one of our strengths, and on the (penalty kill), even on the (power play) if he does play,' center Anze Kopitar said. ``It gives us a right-handed faceoff man that we didn't have.'

``Well, I don't really care what you think, if that has anything to do with it,' Sutter said. ``Is that what they're saying in Boston, too?'

Dustin Brown added: ``We could bore you all to death. If we keep on winning, I could care less what people think of our game. We found something that's successful for us as a group, and sometimes people don't think it's exciting. It depends on your opinion.'

Now, it's the Blackhawks with the home-ice advantage and games on back-to-back days in their arena. Clearly, they see an opportunity there.

But they also had their difficulties with a physical Detroit team, and here come the hard-hitting Kings.

``Yeah. They're big, and they do a good job protecting the net,' Patrick Sharp said. ``They're physical, as well, so we've got to be aware of that. Hopefully we can use our speed and our skill to kind of neutralize that, but this is all just talk. We'll see what happens this series.

                              • Preview: Kings (0-0) at Blackhawks (0-0)

                                Date: June 02, 2013 8:00 PM EDT

Jonathan Quick can make saves standing on his head, off-balance, out of position or even knocking the puck out of the air with his stick like a baseball slugger for all the Chicago Blackhawks care, so long as they sneak more pucks behind the reigning Conn Smythe Trophy winner than the Los Angeles Kings can get past Corey Crawford.

After winning a predictably tight series opener, Chicago looks to take a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference finals as it hosts Los Angeles in a short turnaround Sunday night.

Quick was the playoff MVP while leading the Kings to the franchise's first Stanley Cup title last season, and he's been the talk of this year's playoffs as well. He entered this series with a 1.50 goals-against average and .948 save percentage in 13 playoff games while allowing more than two goals just twice.

He was stellar again in Game 1 on Saturday, recording 17 of his 34 saves in the first period. The Kings had only two shots in the first 20 minutes but held a 1-0 lead as Justin Williams took advantage of a Chicago turnover for his fifth goal of the playoffs.

Chicago finally broke through in the second as Patrick Sharp - who has eight playoff goals - potted a rebound, and Marian Hossa followed 3:53 later by deflecting Duncan Keith's point shot in the net to help the Blackhawks win 2-1.

``You need traffic. You need a deflection. He finds a way to find pucks," coach Joel Quenneville said of Quick. "I think the volume and traffic of shots is the only way to get to this guy.'

For all of Quick's success, he had just a 4.05 GAA while going 1-2-0 versus the Blackhawks in the regular season.

"If Quick's going to see it, he's going to stop it. If we can get a slight tip on it, I think it changes his view,' said Bryan Bickell, who had an assist on Hossa's goal. ``It was a nice tip by Hoss.'

Crawford made 21 saves to help the Blackhawks improve to 7-1 at home in the postseason. Thought to be the second-best goaltender in the series, he has more than held his own in the playoffs.

Crawford, who teamed with Ray Emery to earn the William Jennings Trophy as the goaltending tandem that allowed the fewest regular-season goals, entered the West final with a 1.70 GAA. He's allowed one goal in four of the last five games, including a 2-1 overtime victory over Detroit in Game 7 on Wednesday.

The Kings dropped to 1-6 on the road in the playoffs, with each defeat coming by a 2-1 score. Twelve of their 14 contests have been decided by one goal, while five of the Blackhawks' 13 have been decided by that margin.

``We've got to forget about this one right now, for sure,' center Anze Kopitar said. ``There's some stuff that's going to be addressed, what we have to do better in preparation.'

The back-to-back games - which may fatigue both teams after they needed the full seven games last round to advance - is a necessity since the Rolling Stones are playing their second concert at the United Center on Monday after doing so Friday.

``It's always great when you win the first game, especially (in a) back-to-back (situation), (to) give you a little momentum,' Hossa said. ``I felt like we did lots of good things. We know we have to be better (Sunday) and keep doing those things.'
