Kings at Sharks: What bettors need to know

Los Angeles leads series 2-0.

Entering their Western Conference second-round series against their Pacific Division rivals, the sixth-seeded San Jose Sharks were one of the most dangerous teams on the power play this postseason. Heading into Game 3 at HP Pavilion on Saturday, the fifth-seeded Los Angeles Kings are the ones clicking with the man advantage. San Jose finds itself in a must-win situation thanks to Los Angeles' power play, which converted three times on six opportunities - including twice in a 22-second span late in the third period - en route to a 4-3 home triumph on Thursday that gave the reigning Stanley Cup champions a 2-0 series lead.

The Sharks were 7-for-24 on the power play during their four-game sweep of the Northwest Division champion Vancouver Canucks in the first round. They have been unable to cash in against the Kings, going 0-for-7 over the first two games. Defenseman Drew Doughty gave Los Angeles a 2-0 lead at 4:10 of the second period with a man-advantage tally and captain Dustin Brown forged a 3-3 tie during a 5-on-3 with 1:43 remaining in the third. Trevor Lewis completed the improbable comeback shortly after the ensuing faceoff with San Jose still down a skater.

ABOUT THE KINGS: Brown believes having a large chunk of players from last season's championship team on the roster already has paid dividends this postseason. "Experience is one thing. It's another thing to have all that experience together as a group of guys because that goes a long way when you get yourself into a hole," Brown told the Los Angeles Times after Game 2. "We didn't play a great game, but we found a way to win." The Kings also were in a hole when they lost the first two games of their first-round series against the St. Louis Blues. All that experienced group of players has done is win six consecutive contests since. Jarret Stoll did not play on Thursday after receiving a hit to the head from Raffi Torres in the series opener. While not a marquee name, Stoll has been a key part to Los Angeles' success. "He may not be a top-two-line guy for us, but he's got a lot of fingerprints all over the game every time we have one," defenseman Rob Scuderi told the Times. The Kings have won 12 consecutive home games.

ABOUT THE SHARKS: Game 1 may have been the last contest played by Raffi Torres in a San Jose uniform. An unrestricted free agent after the season, the left wing was suspended for the remainder of the series as a result of his head shot on Stoll. Torres has been banned several times during his career, most notably last postseason when he received a 25-game suspension - which later was reduced to 21 games - for a hit to the head of Chicago's Marian Hossa. Captain Joe Thornton didn't think Torres' hit on Stoll was dirty at all. "We were kind of shocked to hear that he has to fly to New York for the hearing," Thornton told the San Jose Mercury News on Thursday. "We didn't see anything wrong on the play." Coach Todd McLellan believes his was the better team in Game 2, save for the 22-second span late in the third period. "When you get three (goals), you'd better beat this team," McLellan said. "We've got to get back to San Jose and feel good about what we did for 59 minutes. ... There's a lot of good to take out of that game. I liked a lot. I disliked the fact that we lost."

BOSTON (AP) - The Boston Bruins have three rookie defensemen in the lineup for the Eastern Conference semifinals against the New York Rangers.

It's not because they want to.

It's because they have to.

``As you know, we're getting thin here,' Bruins coach Claude Julien said on Friday, a day after Torey Krug, in his first career NHL playoff game, scored to send the game into overtime and Boston defeated the New York Rangers 3-2 in Game 1 of their best-of-seven, second-round playoff series.

With veterans Dennis Seidenberg, Andrew Ference and Wade Redden injured, the Bruins used first-round draft pick Dougie Hamilton along with Krug and Mart Bartkowski on defense. Hamilton assisted on Krug's goal with 2:55 left in regulation, and Bartkowski played a career-high 26 minutes in the 3-2 victory over the Rangers.

``For a coach, you couldn't ask for a better situation,' Julien said on Friday, when his team took the day off to rest up for Sunday's Game 2. ``A lot of credit goes to the coaching staff down there (in the minor leagues) that's done a great job at preparing those guys.'

Julien would not say whether any of his injured players would be able to return for the second game. If not, he'll continue to rely on his rookies. Hamilton, who made the team out of training camp and played 42 games in the lockout-shortened season, said it helps to know that he won't be yanked out of the lineup with one bad shift.

Even if it's only because the Bruins have no choice.

``For all of us, it's not just trying to belong, but getting that opportunity to get regular shifts. It helps you stay focused,' he said. ``It makes it easier when you have that confidence that you can just stay in the game and focus on the game.'

Hamilton, the No. 9 overall pick in the 2011 draft, had five goals and 11 assists this season while averaging about 17 minutes per game. But he moved up the depth chart when injuries stripped the Bruins of three of their top six defensemen.

``We've got to remember that he's 19 years old,' Julien said. ``He's made some unbelievable plays on some goals; we saw that early when he came in and we seemed in awe of that. Playoffs is another step and he's taken that step extremely well, to me.'

To help fill in, the Bruins called Bartkowski up from the AHL for the third time this year; he had two assists and six penalty minutes in 11 games for Boston this year. And Krug, who's played three NHL games in the past two seasons, was brought up from Providence on Tuesday after Seidenberg lasted just 37 seconds in the first-round finale over Toronto.

``What we've seen from (Krug) the few games he's played with us, he doesn't seem to be intimidated by anything, or any circumstances,' Julien said. ``I didn't see a guy that was nervous at all. If anything, I saw a guy that was extremely confident at making the executions that he needed to make.'

The other change the Bruins made on defense was to rely even more heavily on Zdeno Chara. The 2009 Norris Trophy-winner, who averaged about 25 minutes per game in the regular season, has played about 30 minutes per game in the playoffs, including 35 minutes in Game 7 against the Maple Leafs and more than 38 in the opener of the Rangers series.

``He's in great shape, and he's got a couple of days here to recover. So I don't see that being an issue,' Julien said. ``To be honest with you, right now we don't have a choice. You deal with it the best way you can.'

And so do the Rangers.

``With all the minutes he has, the more tired he's going to get,' New York defenseman Steve Eminger said. ``At the end of the day, it doesn't matter if they have six veterans (on defense). We just have to put even more pressure on them and generate more offensively.'

The Rangers hope some of that offense will come from Rick Nash and Brad Richards, who have one goal between them in eight playoff games. Nash did have an assist Thursday - his third of the postseason - but has yet to find the back of the net despite taking a team-high 28 shots.

Another concern is New York's power play, which went 0 for 3 in Game 1 and has failed to convert in 14 opportunities over the last four games. The Rangers are 2 for 31 with the man advantage in the playoffs and coach John Tortorella tried to light a fire under forward Carl Hagelin, who's tied for second on the team with five points in the postseason.

"I think he's too quick," Tortorella told NHL.com when asked why Hagelin is struggling on the power-play units. "I'd like to put him out on the power play but he stinks on the power play. I can't figure it out. I can't. I love the guy. He is such an effective player, but he, as I said many times, stinks on the power play.

"But he may get an opportunity if we keep on going here."

Henrik Lundqvist, who made 45 saves in the opener, has suffered three of his four losses in the postseason in overtime.

OTTAWA (AP) - Jason Spezza doesn't have much time to return to form if the Ottawa Senators want to extend their season.

The star forward hasn't played since Jan. 27 after undergoing back surgery for a herniated disk. He'll rejoin Ottawa's lineup Sunday for Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semifinal series with the Senators trailing 2-0 to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

``I'm excited to have a chance to play again,' Spezza said. ``I feel ready to play.'

He will immediately add depth to a struggling offense and power play.

``We're excited about the skill that he brings back to our team and we're looking forward to it,' Senators coach Paul MacLean said. ``We certainly feel that he's going to give us some help on the power play, for sure. He can help us quite a bit there.'

The Senators' power play has gone 1 for 7 through the first two games.

Spezza's minutes will be monitored, and MacLean suggested his time on the ice could vary depending on the number of power plays the Senators get.

Spezza is expected to line up with Milan Michalek and possibly Colin Greening.

``He's such a skilled playmaker that if you're on the ice with him you know to keep your stick on the ice because he finds a way to get the puck to you,' Zack Smith said. ``When you're playing with guys like that, you're just more prone to go to the net and go to those areas and be more confident.'

Spezza hopes his timing comes back quickly.

``Basically I'm just going to go out and work hard and be smart,' he said. ``I expect to play well.

``I wouldn't play unless I felt I could help the team and contribute.'

Spezza had two goals and three assists in just five games during the regular season.

``It's going to be important to be in his face right away and make sure he doesn't have time and space,' Pittsburgh's Kris Letang said. ``He's got good hands, so he can make you look really bad. So if you're in his face and have a good gap, you have a better chance of having success against him.'

The Senators are undefeated at Scotiabank Place in the playoffs this year.

``We need to play to our identity,' MacLean said. ``We have to try and establish our game first. What hurt us in the first two games is not getting off to a (good) start, and we're down in the first three minutes of both games and catch-up hockey is losing hockey.'

Despite being pulled after allowing three goals in Friday's game, Craig Anderson will get the start Sunday.

``They're going to be desperate and we know this is going to be the toughest test yet,' Sidney Crosby said. ``We need to start well, but just a play a complete game and give ourselves a chance.'

History suggests the Senators might not have one when it comes to winning this series, as Ottawa has never done so after dropping the first two games.

Rallying against the Penguins certainly means tighter defense on Crosby. Ottawa played tentatively in its own end against the superstar in Game 2, and Crosby took advantage by needing just over one period to complete his second playoff hat trick in the 4-3 victory.

``He's one of the best in the game and if you give him time, space to make plays, to shoot puck he's going to burn you,' defenseman Chris Phillips said. ``That's what we did tonight. We gave him too much room and he took advantage.'

Pittsburgh outshot Ottawa 42-22 after the Senators held a 36-30 advantage in the opener. The Penguins will look for a similar effort as they look to take a stranglehold on the series before a hostile crowd.

``I think that we just turn the page on this one, move onto the next and prepare the same way,' Crosby said. ``I don't think we need to get caught up in the fact that we won two here. They're going to be pretty desperate so we better be ready to go in Ottawa.'

New York Rangers coach John Tortorella did his best to divert attention away from the team's punchless power play by calling out Carl Hagelin, a player who doesn't even receive ice time in that situation. The reason for Tortorella's comments may be that he's tired of seeing his team fail to convert with the man advantage, as it has done in each of the last four games and 29 times in 31 opportunities in the postseason. The sixth-seeded Rangers will look to get it in gear and even their Eastern Conference second-round series on Sunday when they visit the fourth-seeded Boston Bruins.

"I think he's too quick," Tortorella said of Hagelin following Saturday's practice. "I'd like to put him out on the power play, but he stinks on the power play. ... I love the guy. He is such an effective player, but he, as I said many times, stinks on the power play." New York went 0-for-3 with the man advantage in Game 1 before Brad Marchand scored his first goal of the playoffs 15:40 into overtime to give Boston a 3-2 triumph.

ABOUT THE RANGERS: Thursday's result spoiled a 45-save performance by reigning Vezina Trophy winner Henrik Lundqvist, who suffered his third overtime loss of the postseason and fell to 3-11 in his career. Rick Nash picked up an assist for the second consecutive contest, but is still searching for his first goal of the playoffs. The top-line forward registered a team-high six shots in Game 1.

ABOUT THE BRUINS: Coach Claude Julien did his best to get creative with his defensemen in Game 1 as veterans Dennis Seidenberg (lower-body), Andrew Ference (lower-body) and Wade Redden (undisclosed) were scratched from the contest. The trio was replaced by rookies Dougie Hamilton, Matt Bartkowski and Torey Krug, who netted a power-play goal in his first postseason contest. Captain Zdeno Chara, who is also a defenseman, extended his point streak to five games by collecting a goal and an assist and logged 38:02 of ice time. Redden practiced on Saturday, but is questionable for Game 2.

Sidelined since undergoing back surgery for a herniated disk in late January, Spezza will be in the lineup for Sunday's Game 3 at Scotiabank Place. Seventh-seeded Ottawa can certainly use the offense, as it dropped the first two contests of the series in the Steel City.

"We're excited about the skill that he brings back to our team and we're looking forward to it," Ottawa coach Paul MacLean said. Although his minutes likely will be monitored, Spezza may be able to provide a jolt to a Senators' struggling power play (1-for-7). MacLean could also use a better effort in keeping Sidney Crosby in check as the captain recorded his second career postseason hat trick in Pittsburgh's 4-3 victory in Game 2 on Friday.

ABOUT THE SENATORS: Stud defenseman Erik Karlsson admitted he's having a difficult time returning to form in the playoffs. After collecting a goal and five assists in Ottawa's first-round victory over second-seeded Montreal, Karlsson has failed to secure a point in the first two contests against Pittsburgh. "I'm not playing the way I want to," the reigning Norris Trophy winner said. "I (have to) play a little bit more poised with the puck and a little bit faster in our own zone. I can't doubt myself." The 22-year-old Karlsson, who suffered a left Achilles' tendon injury in a game versus the Penguins on Feb. 13, was beaten at the blue line on Crosby's first goal on Friday.

"You don't want to be down 2-0," New York coach John Tortorella said on Monday. "We know what hole we're in, but by no means is this a really bad thing. We need to win a game and try to get momentum on our side." Boston can also reflect on its first-round series to see what can happen if it pulls its foot off the throttle. The Bruins led Northeast Division-rival Toronto 3-1 in its series before escaping with a historic victory in Game 7.

ABOUT THE BRUINS: Torey Krug is proving that the spotlight isn't too big as he navigates his way through his initial postseason. "All that comes with confidence and being calm," Krug said of both goals. "If you're freaking out out there because the puck's not exactly where it is, you're going to get yourself in trouble."

ABOUT THE RANGERS: If Tortorella is searching for positives, well, Rick Nash finally scored his first goal of the postseason on Sunday. Nash, however, downplayed his accomplishment and shed light on the elephant in the room. "That's the obvious one. The power play has to be better," Nash said of the New York's 0-for-8 effort with the man advantage in the series and 2-for-36 mark in the playoffs. San Jose was in danger of going down 0-3 to the reigning Stanley Cup champions as the teams ended regulation knotted at 1-1. But the Sharks began overtime with a 5-on-3 power play and cashed in 11 seconds after the first Kings penalty expired as Logan Couture scored at 1:29 to send the HP Pavilion faithful into a frenzy.

Los Angeles was in the same position San Jose found itself entering Game 3 as it lost the first two games of its first-round series at St. Louis before rallying to win four straight. The Sharks are optimistic they can continue along that path as their power play began clicking on Saturday. After going 7-for-24 in its first-round sweep of Vancouver, San Jose was 0-for-7 over the first two contests against Los Angeles before scoring twice on five opportunities in Game 3.

ABOUT THE KINGS: Kyle Clifford may rejoin the lineup Tuesday after missing four games with an undisclosed injury. The left wing failed to register a point in Los Angeles' first five contests this postseason. Left wing Tanner Pearson, who made his NHL debut in Game 3, likely will sit out should Clifford return. Captain Dustin Brown was named as a finalist for the Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award on Monday. Brown, who was runner-up for the honor last year, joins fellow captains Jonathan Toews of Chicago and Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa as finalists. "It's not something you go out and look for," Brown said. "To be among Toews and Alfredsson in that group was special." Jonathan Quick received a game misconduct for verbally abusing the officials after Couture's overtime goal on Saturday, but the goaltender avoided any further discipline from the league. Coach Darryl Sutter told the Los Angeles Times he believes Quick needs to learn to control his temper. "I think he's got to handle that," Sutter said. "He can't be frustrated. That's a by-product of being a great goaltender."

ABOUT THE SHARKS: Martin Havlat's return to San Jose's lineup was short-lived as the veteran right wing has been ruled out for Game 4. Havlat saw less than five minutes of ice time Saturday in his first appearance since the opener of the Sharks' first-round series against Vancouver before exiting with a lower-body injury. It's not known whether it's the same problem that caused Havlat to miss the team's previous five contests. Defenseman Jason Demers could replace Havlat in the lineup, as he skated with the forwards during Monday's practice. Demers has not played since April 18 due to a left ankle injury and is hoping to get back in the lineup. "I feel good. It's just a question of getting back into game shape," he said. "As soon as you do a couple of shifts, especially in this kind of series, you'll be in shape real quick. I'm just helping out wherever I can and going where they tell me to go." If not Demers, coach Todd McLellan is likely to insert Tim Kennedy into the lineup for Havlat.

"You can see the desperation they have," captain Sidney Crosby said. "They want to make sure it's 2-2 going back to Pittsburgh (for Game 5 on Friday) and obviously we know the scenario is to come here and get one of two on the road and go back home with a chance to finish off the series would be great." Tyler Kennedy scored the Penguins' lone goal Sunday and Tomas Vokoun suffered his first loss since replacing Marc-Andre Fleury despite making 46 saves.
