    • Top Money Pitchers

      April 25, 2013

Top Five in the Money Starting Pitchers

We’re a little more than three weeks into the baseball regular season. While there are some teams who have been big surprises, it’s always important to remember that the season is 162 games long. No one is going to win the World Series in the month of April. Similarly, bettors can’t have a profitable year just by winning in April. Betting on Major League Baseball is a long grind it out season.

It’s no secret that starting pitchers are crucial to handicap when betting on baseball. With that being said, I’m going to take a look at starting pitchers who have been making a lot of money for bettors in 2013. They have been the guys to back so far this year, but can they keep up their amazing numbers? Let’s take a closer look at these five in the money pitchers on a case-by-case basis.

Pitchers are listed according to money earned by $100 bettors so far this season.

      1) Patrick Corbin - Arizona Diamondbacks (+465)

Corbin was called up late last year and showed some promise while struggling to be consistent on the mound. He looks so much more confident this year, and it looks like the Diamondbacks have found their “Ace” of the future. Corbin’s career numbers show a major dichotomy between pitching at home and on the road. In his young career, Corbin has a 2.62 ERA at home and a 5.04 ERA on the road. Most of that differential is because of a couple terrible starts on the road last season. Corbin has started three games on the road this year and has a stellar 2.21 ERA. The books are too low on Corbin right now.

      2) Julio Tehran - Atlanta Braves (+439)

Tehran is a totally different case than Corbin. Tehran is a highly touted prospect who the Braves are counting on to be very good this year, but he hasn’t been thus far. How is he on this list? The Braves have been giving him some amazing run support. Atlanta has scored at least six runs in each of Tehran’s four starts this year. Tehran’s ERA is 5.48 in 2013. He did have a solid start at Coors Field earlier this week, so maybe he’s going to turn it around soon. Tehran won’t be on this list long if he doesn’t start throwing the ball better.

      3) Tim Lincecum - San Francisco Giants (+418)

Lincecum cost bettors a lot of money last year, but the Giants are 4-0 in his four starts so far this season. He still hasn’t looked like the Lincecum of old, but he has been much better than last season. Lincecum has a new look on the mound without the long locks, and he is trying to reinvent himself as a pitcher. He doesn’t have the same velocity he had a few years ago, but if he improves his control he can still be very good. Tread lightly with Lincecum until he proves himself in 2013.

      4) Jon Lester - Boston Red Sox (+412)

Here’s another guy who burned money for bettors last season. The entire Red Sox team looked like a bunch fish out of the water with manager Bobby Valentine leading the way last year. In 2013, the Red Sox are off to a great start, and the pitching of Jon Lester (and Clay Buchholz) is a major reason why. From 2008 through 2011 Lester never had an ERA above 3.47. In 2012, Lester finished with an ERA of 4.82. So far in 2013, Lester sports an amazing 1.73 ERA. The books are quickly adjusting to Lester’s early season success.

      5) Matt Moore - Tampa Bay Rays (+411)

Moore is another one of those young highly touted prospects who is quickly coming into his own. His amazing 1.04 ERA tells the story about how awesome he has been in 2013 thus far. There is no doubt he has the ability to put batters away. He led the minors in strikeouts in both 2009 and 2010. Moore has been good at home and on the road, and his control is improving with each start. This guy has the stuff to be a dominating pitcher for many years to come. Don’t be surprised if he ends the season as one of baseball’s biggest money-makers.

      • Thursday Matinee Tip

        April 24, 2013

The Thursday baseball card showcases three getaway games during the afternoon with two former Cy Young Award winners taking the mound. The lone American League matinee takes place at Comerica Park in Detroit as the Royals look to keep up their winning ways as an underdog.

Royals at Tigers - 1:05 PM EST

Kansas City was expected to make progress inside the AL Central this season and the Royals are following suit with a first place start through the first three weeks. Ned Yost's club wraps up a quick two-game set in the Motor City after Wednesday's 7-5 loss, as both teams send their aces to the mound in the series finale.

Justin Verlander (2-2, 2.13 ERA) has alternated wins and losses in each of his four starts, coming off a defeat at Seattle in his last outing. The former MVP struck out a season-high 12 in his previous trip to the rubber, as the Tigers provided Verlander with no offense in a 2-0 loss to the Mariners as a $1.65 road favorite. Verlander lost his only home start, a 7-0 shutout to the Yankees as nearly a $2.00 favorite on April 7, snapping an 11-game winning streak at Comerica Park dating back to 2012.

The Royals send out James Shields (1-2, 3.00 ERA), who has been involved in four contests decided by one run so far. Shields received a no-decision in his previous outing, a 4-3 defeat at Boston last Saturday, but the righty allowed just one earned run in six innings. Kansas City won his only non-quality start, a 9-8 victory at Philadelphia as a $1.20 underdog on February 7. Shields dominated the Tigers as a road 'dog last April as a member of the Rays, scattering six hits and two earned runs in eight innings of a 4-2 triumph.

Pirates at Phillies - 1:05 PM EST

Pittsburgh stumbled out of the gate by losing five of its first six games. The Bucs have rebounded nicely with a 11-4 hot stretch over the last 15 contests, as Pittsburgh wraps up its series with its cross-state rivals at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies aren't an automatic victory anymore with its trio of Roy Halladay, Cole Hamels, and Cliff Lee, as Philadelphia owns a dreadful 4-10 record when those pitchers start.

Lee (2-1, 2.83 ERA) dominated in his first two starts, beating the Braves and Mets by tossing at least eight innings each time. However, the southpaw has lost each of his last two outings to the Reds and Cardinals, while allowing all five runs in a 5-0 home defeat to St. Louis last Saturday. Dating back to last August, the Phillies have drilled the 'under' in 11 of Lee's last 12 starts, including five of six at Citizens Bank Park.

The Pirates counter with James McDonald (2-2, 4.12 ERA), who is seeking the consistency that made him 10-2 to start last season. McDonald has traded off quality starts with non-quality outings in his first four trips to the mound in 2013, coming off a solid outing against the Braves. The right-hander shut down the powerful Atlanta lineup as a short home 'dog by allowing two hits and one earned run in six innings of a 3-1 victory.

Dodgers at Mets - 1:10 PM EST

Two teams trying to find their way in the National League race wrap up their series at Citi Field, as Los Angeles heads back to the West Coast following Thursday's getaway game. The Dodgers plated just 13 runs during a recent six-game losing streak, but scored a combined 14 runs in consecutive victories over the Orioles and Mets. New York has cooled off after a 7-4 start by losing five of its last eight games, but knocked off the Dodgers last night thanks to a walk-off grand slam.

Jeremy Hefner (0-2, 7.07 ERA) looks to lower his high ERA as the New York right-hander has failed to escape the fourth inning in each of his last two outings. Hefner received a no-decision in his previous outing against Washington, allowing three earned runs in four innings of work, but the Nats edged the Mets, 7-6. The Mets are a perfect 3-0 to the 'over' in his three starts, as the opposition has scored exactly seven runs in each of his three outings.

Southpaw Hyun-Jin Ryu (2-1, 4.01 ERA) is delivering plenty of innings through his first four starts, going at least six innings each time. The Dodgers have split each of his two outings in the favorite role, but this is the first time Ryu has been listed as road 'chalk.' Ryu has drilled the 'over' in each of his previous three trips to the mound, as the Los Angeles offense has scored at least five runs in those three contests.

        • Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Since 2003, first round picks in NFL Draft by Big Dozen schools:

          Ohio State 14
          Penn State 8
          Iowa 6
          Wisconsin 6
          Michigan 6
          Illinois 5
          Nebraska 4
          Purdue 3
          Northwestern 1
          Michigan State 1
          Minnesota 1
          Indiana 0

          *****

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind........

          13) The players I’m most interested in at the NFL Draft this weekend are: Marcus Lattimore, the South Carolina RB who has injured his knee twice; CB Honey Badger Mathieu, who is just under 5-9 and has failed multiple drug tests, but was a proven big game performer at LSU, and of course LB Manti Te’o, the most enigmatic of all of this year’s candidates.

          12) Ted Lilly’s start Wednesday made him the 8th different Dodger to start on the mound in LA’s first 20 games.

          11) Hey Twitter users: if you see something posted from The Onion, its not real, it’s a joke, a parody. They post outrageous things in the name of humor and people who don't know them overreact, and then they have a good laugh at the expense of others.

They’re the Twitter version of the fake-to-third, throw-to-first pickoff move that used to be legal and had everyone in the stands yelling “Balk!!!”

          10) So far this season, the Braves have out-homered opponents 35-13.

          9) Stephen Strasburg's last four starts: 0-4, 5.55. Washington scored total of seven runs in those four games, but still.....

          8) Matt Brady is just 88-82 in four years at James Madison, but he made the NCAA tournament, so he got a 4-year contract extension; Buffalo fired Reggie Witherspoon, who had generally done better than that at Buffalo (92-66 in his last five years there), but never made the field of 68. That’s the reality at a lot of these mid and low-majors programs.

Getting into the NCAAs excites the alumni, and they in turn contribute more money to the school. In the end, its always about the money.

          7) Glad to see Brandon Inge back in the big leagues, in Pittsburgh; he is a tough, gritty guy and a good teammate who was a big help to the A’s before hurting his shoulder LY. We wish him well.

          6) White Sox have already played 11 one-run games (5-6); the Bronx Bombers have only played two (2-0).

          5) Six of eight NBA playoff series are 2-0. Not a lot of drama there.

          4) Surprised the Sporting News had Les Miles ranked #9 amongst current college football coaches; he’s done an excellent job in Baton Rouge, is better than #9. So what if he wears his hat funny and chews grass? He has to go up against Nick Saban (at Alabama) and Saban's ghost (at LSU) and he does pretty darn well. No way there are eight programs better than LSU's.

          3) Why did Cleveland give Mike Brown $20M to come back to coach the Cavaliers?

Wouldn’t Alvin Gentry be just as good, if not better, for a lot less money?

          2) Jeff Duncan of NOLA.com reports that of the all defensive players drafted since 2003, 36 made the Pro Bowl; of those 36, only seven were drafted after the second round.

          1) When you’re listening to expert after expert break down the NFL Draft over the next few days, remember that Tom Brady was once taken 30 picks after Marc Bulger, and Kurt Warner was never drafted.

Not a lot of expertise there.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot over pitchers take the mound Thursday
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday features a number of starting pitchers that have satisfied over bettors so far this season. Here is a look at three that take the bump.

Team over/under record in pitcher's starts indicated in italics. All stats prior to Wednesday's games

Jeremy Hefner, New York Mets (0-2, 7.07 ERA)

                    4-0 over/under

Hefner has just 14 innings pitched in four starts this season. The Mets have lost all four games in which he gets the start and the over is 4-0. Hefner has not pitched more than four innings in any of his last three starts.

The Mets host the Los Angeles Dodgers Thursday in the second game of their series. They are tops in the National League with a 14-4 over/under record.

Gio Gonzalez, Washington Nationals (1-1, 5.85 ERA)

                    3-1 over/under

Gonzalez has gone cold after a sparkling start to the season. The Nationals' lefty has a loss and two no-decisions in his last three games, all of which have gone over the total. According to fangraphs.com, Gonzalez has lost about one mile per hour off of his fastball and his percentage of strikes is down four percent from 2012.

The Cincinnati Reds visit the Nationals Thursday. The teams have played three games this season. All have gone over the total.

Jarrod Parker, Oakland (0-3, 7.50 ERA)

                    3-1 over/under

Oakland is king of the hill in the over/under standings at 17-4. The A's pitching has been decent and is third in the majors with 13 quality starts. Jarrod Parker has just one of those quality starts. He's coming off a loss against the Tampa Bay Rays, giving up just one earned run in 6 1-3 innings. Despite that outing, his 7.50 ERA is worst among Oakland's starters and his 18 innings pitched are the fewest among the starting rotation.

Oakland open its series with Baltimore Thursday. It will be the first meeting between the two clubs.

MLB bettors - beware of these burnt-out bullpens
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Plenty of MLB clubs had to dig deep into their bullpens Wednesday with four games needing extra innings. That could leave those teams dangerously thin on relievers if their Thursday starters get into trouble.

Here’s a look at the teams involved in those extra-inning affairs and how their pitching staff stacks up versus Thursday’s opponent:

Toronto Blue Jays (+130 vs. New York Yankees)

The Blue Jays needed 11 innings to get by Baltimore Wednesday, going through four relievers in the process after starter Brandon Morrow lasted 6 1/3 innings. Aaron Loup, who blew a three-run lead in the seventh, Darren Oliver, Esmil Rogers and Casey Janssen all saw action out of the pen.

Toronto goes with lefty Mark Buehrle, who went seven solid innings vs. the Yankees in his most recent start but had Loup spoil the day in a 5-3 loss last Saturday. The Blue Jays bullpen has a 3.08 collective ERA and a 4-6 record in 22 games.

Baltimore Orioles (+113 at Oakland A’s)

The Orioles went five deep into the bullpen Wednesday after starter Josh Stinson lasted just under six innings versus Toronto. Tommy Hunter, Darren O'Day, Troy Patton and Jim Johnson all worked at least one inning while Brian Matusz threw just three pitches in the extra-innings loss.

Baltimore has one of the better bullpens in the bigs, posting a 2.44 ERA. The O’s handed the ball to Jason Hammel, who has gone at least six innings in each of his four starts this season.

Colorado Rockies (+112 at Arizona Diamondbacks)

The Rockies took a 6-5 extra-innings thrilling over the Atlanta Braves (who are off Thursday) Wednesday, using up four relievers over those 12 innings. Colorado looked to Adam Ottavino, Rex Brothers, Rafael Betancourt and Matt Belisle out of the bullpen. Ottavino and Belisle each put in two innings of work for the win.

Jorge De La Rosa gets the nod for the series opener at Arizona. The lefty has worked six inning in each of his last three starts, allowing just three runs total – including back-to-back scoreless efforts – in that span.

Arizona Diamondbacks (-121 vs. Colorado Rockies)

The Diamondbacks could also be depleted in the bullpen Thursday after some overtime versus the San Francisco Giants. Arizona switched up four different relievers in the 3-2 road win, calling out Brad Ziegler, Heath Bell, David Hernandez and Matt Reynolds.

The D-backs bullpen owns a 2.58 ERA – third lowest in the National League. Arizona goes with right-hander Trevor Cahill versus the Rockies Thursday. He’s been solid in his last two starts, pitching seven innings in each while giving up just three runs on 12 total hits.

Los Angeles Dodgers (-115 at New York Mets)

The Dodgers lost to the Mets on a walk-off Grand Slam in the 10th inning Wednesday and burned through a big chunk of bullpen in the process. Los Angeles used J.P. Howell, Ronald Belisario, Kenley Jansen, Brandon League and Josh Wall over the final five innings, giving up a one-run lead in the ninth.

The Dodgers go with rookie Hyun-Jin Ryu versus the Mets Thursday. He’s pitched at least six innings in all four starts. Los Angeles relievers combined for a 4.08 ERA and have two blown saves, including Wednesday’s, this year.

New York Mets (+106 vs. Los Angeles Dodgers)

New York needed four relievers to come back against the Dodgers Wednesday. The Mets leaned on LaTroy Hawkins, Scott Rice, Scott Atchison and Bobby Parnell out of the bullpen after starter Matt Harvey went six innings. New York’s bullpen lugs the second-highest ERA for a group of relievers in the majors at 5.13.

The Mets march Jeremy Hefner to the mound Thursday. He’s pitched just seven total innings in his last two starts and served as a reliever in last week’s 11-3 thrashing at the hands of the Rockies. Hefner is 0-2 with an ERA north of 7.00.
