      • Hot & Not

        April 17, 2013

We are just a couple of weeks into the 2013 MLB betting campaign, and today, we're going to be looking at some of the teams that have burned a hole in your pocket in the National League, as well as some of the ones that have provided the most profits to date.

        Money-Makers

Atlanta Braves (12-1, +$1,179) – The Braves have gotten the job done everywhere they have played this year. The combination of the Upton Brothers is working well, and team has a 1.83 ERA to boot. We know that Atlanta will come back to earth at some point, but there is no doubt that, for the time being, this is the team with the title of the "Best Bet in Baseball."

On Deck: The Braves finish up on Wednesday with the Kansas City Royals before heading to the Steel City to take on the Pittsburgh Pirates. This is probably where the team's winning streak, which currently sits at 10 games, ends at some point, but it's tough to say that it's a certainty, knowing that the team has yet to lose a road game this season.

Colorado Rockies (10-4, +$669) – The Rocks have been rolling at home, as they are the only team in the bigs that have yet to lose a game in their home stadium this season. Of course, Mother Nature is doing what she can to try to put this team in a bad spot, knowing that it has been as freezing as could be in Denver, but the Rockies have overcome all.

On Deck: More home games are in store, as there are two more against the New York Mets before welcoming the Arizona Diamondbacks to town. We know that New York hasn't coped well with the cold, and we have a hard time believing that the Snakes are going to do any better.

        Money-Burners

Miami Marlins (3-11, -$676) – Now that that Houston Astros are playing in the American League, there is no doubt whatsoever who the most embarrassing team is in the National League. The Marlins have sold off all of their best players for the baseball equivalent of pennies on the dollar, and the end result through 14 games is that the team is batting .212, is averaging 2.21 runs per game, and has a team OPS of .553. All of those numbers rank dead last in the game.

On Deck: The Fish wrap up a nine-game home stand against the Washington Nationals on Wednesday before going to the Great American Ball Park to take on the Cincinnati Reds and their Top 3 home field advantage for four games this weekend.

Milwaukee Brewers (4-8, -$466) – Things just haven't gone well for the Brew Crew this year. They went a stretch of 32 innings without scoring a run last week, and now, RHP Yovani Gallardo is in a heck of a lot of trouble after getting busted for a DUI. Add into the mix the fact that it only seems like a matter of time until OF Ryan Braun finally gets caught with steroids, and it is becoming clear that this is not going to be a fun team to watch in the dog days of summer.

On Deck: More home games at Miller Park are ahead, as the Brewers will have to finish off a series with the defending champs, followed by welcoming the Chicago Cubs to town for the first time this season.

When he called a Ram game, I knew the game was more important than most games. He called action with enthusiasm and humor while allowing the game to be the thing, none of this “Look at me!!!” BS that’s way too prevalent nowadays. RIP Mr Summerall. Thanks for everything.

                  12) NFL releases its 2013 schedule Thursday at 8; always interesting things to talk about after that comes out, and we’ll be doing that in this space on Friday. Speaking of which.......

                  11) ....... Friday night at 10:35 ET, yours truly will be a phone-in guest on Sportsxradio.com, America’s finest radio sports talk show, heard in 12 states and British Columbia on 50,000-watt KDWN 720 in Las Vegas. Host Ken Thomson and Chuck Edel are very knowledgeable handicappers—it’ll be a fun, informational segment of sports radio.

                  10) When one of your fantasy pitchers is on the hill with umpire John Hirschbeck behind the plate, it’s a good day for you. Hirschbeck called 31 strikes for Doug Fister Tuesday night, two more called strikes than any other pitcher has gotten a game this season (see table above).

                  9) Cancellation of Pacer-Celtic game Tuesday night also canceled season over/under win tickets on wagers purchased at some casinos in Las Vegas, which state that all 82 games have to be played for the wager to be valid. Other casinos stipulate that teams only need to play 80 (out of 82) games for action to be good.

                  8) Interesting story on cbssports.com about how USC’s new basketball coach Andy Enfield was commenting to a co-worker and a reporter how he wished his office was a little bigger, so he could have recruits’ families visit in there, and before the day was over, workers were knocking a wall out to give his office added space. Must be nice to have resources.

                  7) Loyola-Chicago is replacing Creighton in the MVC; not much recent tradition at Loyola, but they were a national power in the early 60’s and the school is in Chicago, so they should be able to recruit well. Then again, so is DePaul and look what a mess they are.

                  6) FIU replaced Richard Pitino with Norfolk State’s Anthony Evans, the guy who beat Missouri as a 15-seed last year. Evans recruits a lot in New York City; he will be FIU's third head coach in three seasons.

                  5) Loyola, Md replaced Jimmy Patsos with GG Smith, son of Tubby; Greyhounds are moving into the Patriot League, which is probably at least part of why Patsos jumped ship.

                  4) UNLV lost assistant coach/recruiter Justin Hutson to San Diego State, which is where he used to work. Hutson thought going to UNLV would help him land a head coaching gig, but it hasn’t worked out.

                  3) Oklahoma State became a top 15 basketball team for next year when Marcus Smart (somewhat surprisingly) announced he’ll be back in Stillwater next winter. Very good news for Travis Ford, not such good news for the rest of the Big X. Good news for college basketball.

                  2) Lakers beat Houston in OT, so they'll be the #7 seed in the west and play San Antonio in the first round of the NBA playoffs.

                  1) Good ending to a 14-inning game in Seattle, with Tigers throwing out the tying run at the plate to end the game after a double by Dustin Ackley.

                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thursday's streaking and slumping MLB starting pitchers
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Major league pitchers have enough starts under their belts to pick out which arms are streaking and slumping to start the season. Each day we’ll look at the hottest and coldest pitchers taking the mound.

                            Streaking

Hisashi Iwakuma, Seattle Mariners (2-0, 2.18 ERA)

Seattle’s second-year hurler has excelled early on and has risen to the challenge, out-dueling big names like Yu Darvish and Chris Sale so far. He shares the mound with another star, Detroit ace Justin Verlander. Iwakuma has 16 strikeouts and just one walk in 20 2/3 innings and is stellar inside Safeco Field, boasting a 7-3 record and 2.40 ERA in 18 home games – 11 of those were starts.

Alexi Ogando, Texas Rangers (2-0, 1.08 ERA)

The Rangers have won all three times Ogando has taken the bump this season, getting 16 2/3 innings out of the righty in those starts. Ogando has limited opposing bats to just .194 and has been especially stingy with runners in scoring position (.125). He’s fanned 17 batters while walking just five.

                            Slumping

Phil Hughes, New York Yankees (0-2, 10.29 ERA)

Hughes hasn’t lasted more than four innings in his three starts and was chased after only three in his most recent appearance versus Baltimore. He gave up five runs on five hits – three of which were home runs. Hughes heard it from the Bronx crowd and could be headed to the bullpen if this slump continues.

Cole Hamels, Philadelphia Phillies (0-2, 7.56 ERA)

Hamels looked much better in his last outing, giving up one run on six hits in a no-decision to the Marlins. But that’s not enough to erase his horrific efforts in his first two starts of 2013. The Phillies’ high-priced southpaw was battered for 13 runs on 13 hits, including four home runs, in just under 11 innings of work. He’s been hit-and-miss versus St. Louis going 2-3 with a 3.27 career ERA.
