  • Preview: Padres (5-10) at Giants (9-7)

    Game: 1
    Venue: AT&T Park

    Date: April 19, 2013 10:15 PM EDT

Few starting pitchers have been better than Madison Bumgarner thus far. There may not be one off to a worse start than Edinson Volquez.

Those two squaring off appears to give the San Francisco Giants a big edge Friday night at AT&T Park, as might their recent history against the San Diego Padres going into the season series opener between these NL West foes.

While the Padres (5-10) are coming off an impressive three-game sweep at Dodger Stadium, outscoring Los Angeles 22-7, the Giants (9-7) were swept in three at Milwaukee this week while allowing 21 runs.

Bumgarner (3-0, 1.77 ERA) could give them a good chance to bounce back. He's looking to become the first NL pitcher to reach four wins after yielding four runs through his first three, spanning 20 1-3 innings.

The left-hander held the Chicago Cubs scoreless for six innings Saturday and was removed after allowing a two-run homer with two outs in the seventh, but the Giants hung on to win 3-2.

"All the pitches felt pretty good today," Bumgarner said.

While the Giants have not trailed in any of Bumgarner's outings, the Padres have been outscored 29-8 in three games started by Volquez (0-3, 11.69).

His ERA was the NL's worst among pitchers with at least three starts through Wednesday. The right-hander has allowed at least four runs in each of his three and failed to get through four innings twice. He's given up 21 hits and seven walks in 12 1-3 innings.

"Over the course of 33 starts, you're going to have some rough ones," manager Bud Black said. "Volky has had them right out of the get go. Let's hope that he can get it straightened out."

Volquez is 2-5 with an 8.84 ERA in his past eight road starts, losing the last four. He has a 5.40 career ERA versus the Giants.

The Padres have gone 6-12 against them in each of the past two seasons, not winning any of the 12 series in that span and losing two of three games in every one last year. San Diego has dropped 12 of 16 in San Francisco, averaging 2.9 runs while hitting .218, since its last series win over the Giants - Oct. 1-3, 2010.

However, the Padres enter off a breakout series, hitting .339 in the sweep of the Dodgers after batting .233 during a 2-10 start. Chris Denorfia and Kyle Blanks had five hits apiece in the series and his first homer of the season in a 7-2 win in Wednesday's finale.

Chase Headley, who led the NL with 115 RBIs last year, had an RBI single in his season debut after being sidelined by a broken thumb.

"It was a well-played series by us, with some guys starting to swing the bats," Black said.

Everth Cabrera had three hits Wednesday and is batting .387 with two homers in his last eight games. He's 0 for 11 versus Bumgarner, who went 3-1 with a 3.86 ERA versus the Padres last year.

Denorfia is a career .406 hitter against him and Headley is at .308.

Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford has an 11-game hitting streak after going 7 for 12 with two homers at Milwaukee.

Buster Posey, meanwhile, is 2 for 18 in his last six games and was given the day off Thursday as the Giants fell 7-2. The reigning NL MVP is batting .213 without a homer.

"It's a matter of keep on grinding and keep working," Posey told the team's official website Wednesday.

    • Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

Bovada's odds on the first manager to be fired this baseball season.......

4-1-- Charlie Manuel, Phillies-- Nucleus of team getting old.

9-2-- Bud Black, Padres-- Miller Huggins couldn't win with this team.

5-1-- Ron Gardenhire, Twins-- People I know in Minnesota swear he is a horrible manager who got lucky early in his tenure.

7-1-- Ron Roenicke, Brewers-- Have to get Gallardo a designated driver.

15-2-- Joe Girardi, Bronx-- $200M doesn't buy as much as it used to.

8-1-- Eric Wedge, Mariners-- At least Wichita State alum enjoyed Shockers' run to the Final Four.

      *****

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Initial thoughts on NFL Draft..........

      13) Defending champ Ravens are already a 9.5-point underdog at Denver in their season opener; Baltimore is opening on the road because the Orioles wouldn't move their Sept. 5 game to a day game to accomodate parking near the two ballparks in downtown Baltimore.

Ravens have one home game between Sept 22 and Nov 10, with four road games, a bye and a home tilt with Green Bay in there. Three of their last five games are in primetime.

      12) Chip Kelly will be the most interesting rookie head coach this year, as he replaces Andy Reid in Philly and inherits a QB controversy. Eagles are opening the season with the Redskins; tough stretch for them is Weeks 4-6, when they're on road three weeks in row, at Broncos-Giants-Bucs. If they go 1-2 in that stretch, its not so bad.

      11) Reid's return to Philly won't take long; Chiefs have a Week 3 Thursday night game on NFL Network at Lincoln Financial Field.

      10) NFL must think Jets are trading Darrelle Revis to the Bucs, because those two teams play each other in season opener at Swamp Stadium, second year in row former Rutgers coach Greg Schiano brings his team to the Garden State.

      9) Six divisional games in Week 1; Eagles-Redskins are the first of two Monday night games, along with Texans-Chargers.

      8) Eight of the Thursday night games are divisional matchups, which is a good idea, given the short prep time. Chargers-Broncos Dec 12 is a possible snow game in the Mile High City, bad news for San Diego.

      7) Bills-Patriots start and finish the season against each other, as all Week 17 games are divisional rivalry games. New England has the maximum five primetime games, including Sunday night games with Atlanta/Denver.

      6) Networks wrestle over these marquee matchups; FOX won the battle for the RGIII-Peyton (Denver-Washington) matchup, probably only one there will ever be, which is also Mike Shanahan's return to Denver in Week 8.

Shanahan, by the way, is 15-4 in season openers. Redskins don't play the Giants until Week 13.

      5) Steelers won their last ten home openers (8-2 vs spread); they open with the Titans this season, should be hefty favorites.

      4) How anxious you think Sean Payton is to get back on the field? Saints open with division rivals Falcons/Bucs. New Orleans-Carolina don't play until Week 14, then play again two weeks later.

      3) Week 4, Dolphins-Saints. Once upon a time, Drew Brees was going to sign with Miami as a free agent, but the Dolphins' coach at the time decided to sign Daunte Culpepper instead. Whoops.

You may have heard of that coach, who has since moved on.

      Nick Saban.

      2) Week 12, Colts at Cardinals. Bruce Arians coaches Arizona now, but he was interim coach of the Colts LY, when Chuck Pagano was ill. Indy filled Arians' spot with Pep Hamilton, who was Andrew Luck's OC at Stanford.

      1) Thanksgiving Day is always fun; this year, its Packers-Lions, Raiders-Cowboys during the day, then Steelers-Ravens at night.

Next week its the NFL Draft; pro football doesn't have much of an offseason anymore. Who do you think the #1 pick will be?

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Friday's streaking and slumping MLB starting pitchers
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Major league pitchers have enough starts under their belts to pick out which arms are streaking and slumping to start the season. Each day we’ll look at the hottest and coldest pitchers taking the mound.

              Streaking

Matt Harvey, New York Mets (3-0, 0.82 ERA)
Mets vs. Washington Nationals (Stephen Strasburg, 1-2, 2.95 ERA)

Harvery showed potential in his ten starts for the Metropolitans last season starting late in July. He had a 2.73 ERA in 59 1/3 innings pitched and gave up more than two earned runs twice. Harvey has been even better in 2013, giving up only two earned runs and striking out 25 batters in three starts.

Jhoulys Chacin, Colorado Rockies (2-0, 1.96 ERA)
Rockies vs. Arizona Diamondbacks (Ian Kennedy, 1-1, 5.79 ERA)

Chacin made only 14 starts in 2012 after being sidelined with a pectoral muscle injury. He looks like a new man early in 2013, giving up four earned runs and 13 hits in three starts.

              Slumping

Vance Worley, Minnesota Twins (0-2, 10.50 ERA)
Twins at Chicago White Sox (Jake Peavy, 2-1, 3.93 ERA)

Worley's introduction to the American League has not been easy for the former Philadelphia starter. In his last start against the Mets, he was yanked in the second after giving up seven earned runs as the Twins lost 16-5.

Edison Volquez, San Diego Padres (0-3, 11.68)
Padres at San Francisco Giants (Madison Bumgarner, 3-0, 1.77 ERA)

Volquez has made it past the fourth inning only once in his three starts, and has given up 16 earned runs, walked 7 batters. The Padres have been whooped 11-2, 9-1 and 9-5, in his three starts, respectively.

While his name isn't likely to come up when discussing the game's best pitchers, Hiroki Kuroda was brilliant his last time out.

He'll try to build on his fifth career shutout Saturday as the surging New York Yankees continue a three-game set against the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre.

After compiling a 6.75 ERA through his first two turns in the rotation, Kuroda (2-1, 2.87 ERA) delivered a masterful performance Sunday in a 3-0 win over Baltimore, striking out five without a walk in a five-hitter. The right-hander recorded 18 groundball outs and didn't allow a runner past first base until Nick Markakis took second on a bouncer in the ninth inning.

"When I look at Hiroki, he's able to read swings, he's able to change speeds," manager Joe Girardi told MLB's official website. "He has pitches that he can freeze hitters on, certain fastballs; he can get them to swing and miss on his split and slider. He has a curveball that he goes to just to get them off balance. I think he really knows how to pitch."

Kuroda is 6-1 with a 3.68 ERA over his last 11 road starts dating to last year. The right-hander was tagged for a career worst-tying seven runs over five-plus innings of an 8-1 loss at Toronto on May 16, but he's posted a 1.46 ERA in winning his last two starts in the series.

While Colby Rasmus is just 2 for 18 with eight strikeouts against Kuroda, Jose Bautista is 2 for 5 with a pair of homers. Bautista missed the previous four games due to back spasms before going 1 for 3 with a two-run shot in Friday's 9-4 series-opening defeat.

Toronto (7-10) has now lost three off four and dropped to 4-7 at home, where it's gone a horrendous 4 for 53 (.075) with runners in scoring position.

"We can't get anything going. It hasn't come together yet," manager John Gibbons said. "I think it will, it's just a matter of time. But you know what, it's time to start playing better baseball, there's no question about it."

Travis Hafner, meanwhile, hit his fifth long ball and former Blue Jays Lyle Overbay and Vernon Wells also went deep as New York posted its fourth consecutive road win. The Yankees (9-6), who have hit .354 and outscored opponents 41-11 over that stretch, have won eight of 10 overall.

"I'm not complaining and I don't hear anyone else complaining," Girardi said. "We've swung the bats really pretty well. We've hit a lot of home runs, we hit a bunch tonight. It's good to see."

New York will try to stay hot against Mark Buehrle (1-0, 7.31), who showed signs of coming around Monday against his former team. The left-hander allowed two runs and nine hits over 6 1-3 innings, earning the victory in a 4-3 win over the White Sox.

"I'm the same pitcher no matter what team, no matter what batters are in there," he said. "Just try to hit my spots, keep the ball down. My cutter was working a little bit better than it has. ... Just seemed like everything was working."

Buehrle, though, could be in for a long day if his efforts versus New York are any indication. He's 0-6 with a 9.00 ERA over his last eight starts against the Yankees, and his lifetime 6.38 ERA against them is his highest against any opponent.

He's had an especially rough time against Wells and Ichiro Suzuki, who are a combined 42 for 92 (.456) in their matchups. Robinson Cano has also fared well, going 6 for 14 with two homers.

The Boston Red Sox have plenty of reasons to look forward to taking the field at Fenway Park this weekend.

None more than the chance to help their hometown heal from one of the most tragic events in the city's history.

With slugger David Ortiz expected to make his season debut and Clay Buchholz hoping to remain undefeated, the Red Sox try for a seventh consecutive victory Saturday against the Kansas City Royals in their first home game since the Boston Marathon bombings.

Shortly after the Red Sox (11-4) won 3-2 over Tampa Bay in Monday's annual Patriots Day game, two bombs exploded near the downtown finish line of the Boston Marathon. The alleged act of terrorism killed three people, injured more than 170 and jarred the collective hearts of a city and nation.

On Friday night, the Red Sox and Royals (8-6) hoped to provide another element in the healing process for the city of Boston, but the game was postponed with the area on lockdown as various local and national law enforcement agencies searched for the second suspect tied to the bombings.

"You would much rather play, but there are bigger things at stake here than baseball," Royals infielder Elliot Johnson tweeted Friday according to MLB's official website.

Though that was suspect was finally apprehended Friday night, a makeup date for the series opener has yet to be announced. Saturday's contest remains as scheduled.

"It's going to be great,' said Jon Lester, who pitched seven strong innings in Boston's 6-3 win at Cleveland on Thursday. "Maybe for a couple of hours it can get back to being Boston and watching a baseball game and not thinking about all the other things. Hopefully, we'll be able to do that.'

Though the Royals have dropped seven of 10 at Fenway Park, they also are looking forward to Friday's contest.

"It's going to be a lot of fun to go into that city and play in that town when it means more than just playing baseball," Kansas City third baseman Mike Moustakas told MLB's official website. "It's going to be nice to go into a town and be able to help people out."

During their three-game sweep of Cleveland, the Red Sox put a symbolic jersey in their dugout that had "BOSTON 617 STRONG" on the back. They'll likely do the same with a home jersey at Fenway and have the Red Sox logo "B" with the word "Strong" under it on the Green Monster.

Red Sox fans can certainly find comfort in their team's start after missing the postseason the last three years. Boston leads the AL East and can win seven straight for the first time since 2011.

That success came without Ortiz, who started on the disabled list with an Achilles injury that limited him to 90 games in 2012. The slugger went 4 for 20 during a rehab assignment that ended Thursday when he homered for Triple-A Pawtucket.

"He feels good about where he's at, and all things are pointing to his return," manager John Farrell said.

Ortiz has batted .371 with five homers and 23 RBIs in his last 16 games versus Kansas City.

Buchholz (3-0, 0.41 ERA), meanwhile, has thrown 18 scoreless innings since allowing his only run - a homer at Yankee Stadium on April 3. He's yielded 11 hits and struck out 23 in 22 innings overall.

The right-hander, who took a no-hitter in the eighth Sunday versus Tampa Bay, ultimately allowing two hits and fanning 11 in the 5-0 win, will try not to get caught up in the emotion of a special day.

"I'm going to try to keep my emotions under wraps as much as possible," he told the Red Sox's official website. "Given the circumstances, it's going to be a day that's in pursuit of recovery for everyone who had to face losses."

Buchholz is 3-1 with a 2.19 ERA against the Royals, but has not faced them since 2010.

Kansas City counters with James Shields (1-2, 3.43), who went 2-9 with a 5.86 ERA at Fenway for Tampa Bay. However, he allowed four hits in 8 1-3 innings of 1-0 win at Boston last season.

The right-hander gave up three runs, two on a homer, and one other hit in nine innings of a 3-2 loss to Toronto on Saturday.

Lorenzo Cain had three hits and Jeff Francoeur the RBI in Kansas City's 1-0 win over Atlanta on Wednesday.

Cain is batting .424 in his last nine games, but is 2 for 15 with a homer and six strikeouts at Fenway.

                              Venue: Great American Ball Park

The manner in which the Miami Marlins won their latest contest might be what they need to begin a run in the right direction.

Looking to win back-to-back games for the first time this season, the visiting Marlins continue their series with the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday.

Justin Ruggiano hit a tiebreaking solo homer off Cincinnati's Aroldis Chapman in the ninth inning to help Miami (4-13) snap the Reds' four-game winning streak with a 2-1 victory Friday.

The Marlins have scored four runs in their last three games, but bounced back nicely against a Cincinnati team that totaled 11 runs in each of the previous two contests - including Thursday's series opener.

"We haven't scored a ton of runs,' Miami manager Mike Redmond said. "We're trying to be aggressive in situations when we can be aggressive.'

The hard-throwing Chapman had not allowed a run in his previous eight appearances. Five of the seven homers Chapman has allowed during his four seasons in the majors have come at Great American Ball Park.

"You get so used to him being perfect, but that happens a couple of times a year,' Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "It doesn't happen very often."

Ruggiano, who homered in his second straight game, has hit three of Miami's five home runs on the season. He's 7 for 22 with five RBIs in his last six contests and 8 for 20 in seven career games versus Cincinnati (9-8).

Shortstop Nick Green added three hits Friday for Miami, which hopes more competitive efforts are in the team's future.

"It all came together perfect (Friday),' Redmond said.

Scheduled Miami starter Wade LeBlanc (0-3, 6.75 ERA) has served up eight of the 12 runs he's allowed this season in the first inning. Washington scored four in the first Monday off LeBlanc, who yielded seven and nine hits in 3 2-3 innings of a 10-3 loss.

"I don't know. We're only three starts in, but something has got to change," LeBlanc told the Marlins' official website. "We've got to figure out how to get through that first inning unscathed, and give these guys a chance. That's priority No. 1 at this point."

The left-hander is 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA against the Reds, but last faced them in 2011.

Cincinnati counters with Bronson Arroyo (2-1, 4.05), who allowed a two-run homer and four other hits in eight innings of a 4-2 win over Philadelphia on Monday. That helped the Reds end a five-game skid and rest a bullpen that had been taxed during the slide.

"(Baker) said that he needed me bad," Arroyo told the Reds' official website. "I assumed that meant go deep in the ballgame and have a 'W' next to our name at the end of the night."

The right-hander is 1-4 with a 4.22 ERA in 10 starts against the Marlins.

Cincinnati managed four of its five hits in six innings Friday off Miami starter Kevin Slowey. Joey Votto drove in the Reds' lone run, but is 1 for 12 with five strikeouts in the last four games.

                                Venue: U.S. Cellular Field
                                Date: April 20, 2013 3:05 PM EDT

Jake Peavy delivered a masterful performance for the Chicago White Sox his last time out.

He's been plenty sharp against the Minnesota Twins of late, too.

With Peavy looking to build on his latest outing, the White Sox try to continue their recent success against the Twins as these AL Central rivals begin a weather-shortened series Saturday at U.S. Cellular Field.

Peavy (2-1, 3.93 ERA) was lights out Sunday, scattering five hits over seven innings of one-run ball in a 3-1 win at Cleveland. The right-hander struck out 11 to match his high from last season.

"He's not just throwing to one side of the plate," manager Robin Ventura told MLB's official website. "He'll mix it in on the inside part and backdoor you on the outside so I think he was just sharp today. He seemed to be hitting the glove."

Peavy has also been superb in winning four consecutive starts against the Twins (6-7), compiling a 1.73 ERA and striking out 23 in 26 innings. He's made things extremely difficult on Josh Willingham, who's hitless in 15 career at_bats in their matchups. Justin Morneau has also struggled, going 3 for 16.

As if facing Peavy wasn't daunting enough, Minnesota could be a bit rusty following three days off. The Twins, who saw Sunday's matchup against the Mets get postponed, went on to post back-to-back wins over the Angels before Wednesday's series finale was also called off due to weather.

After a scheduled off day, the opener of this set was postponed Friday due to a forecast of cold and windy weather.

"It's never really good to have that many off days, especially when you bang a game this time - you're going to play a lot of games in a row later," manager Ron Gardenhire said. "Somewhere you're going to pay. But you can't fight this weather. It is what it is. But you'll be playing in better weather, which is a good thing. But the pitching gets a little out of whack here."

Given the unusual circumstances, the Twins will turn to Vance Worley (0-2, 10.50). Acquired from Philadelphia this offseason, Worley has been a disappointment thus far, and he was especially bad last Friday in a 16-5 loss to the Mets.

The right-hander surrendered a career-high nine runs before being removed after facing four batters and failing to record an out in the second inning.

"It's frustrating," he said. "Nobody likes to have that happen to them. So I'll have to make some adjustments this week so that I'm ready to go."

The White Sox (7-9) are coming off a four-game split with Toronto. Chris Sale was outpitched by R.A. Dickey in a 3-1 loss Thursday as Chicago finished a 3-7 road trip.

"It's been a long, rough trip," Ventura said, "so we are ready to go home and hopefully turn it around."

The White Sox are likely to be without Dayan Viciedo, who left Thursday's game with a left oblique strain. Viciedo is batting .333 with two homers and 13 RBIs in his last 11 matchups with the Twins.

Chicago has won 22 of the last 28 meetings with Minnesota. The White Sox took 14 of 18 last season, including the last four.

They will need to be wary of Joe Mauer, who's gone 16 for 31 with two homers and seven RBIs over the last seven games. Mauer is a career .320 hitter versus Chicago, and his 14 home runs in the series are his most against any opponent.

"When he gets hot, nobody can really stop him," second baseman Brian Dozier said. "He does some pretty neat things with the bat."
