            Sunday, March 10

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Around the rink: Sunday's NHL betting notes
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Rangers at Washington Capitals (+114, 5)

Probable starting goaltenders: Henrik Lundqvist (NYR), Braden Holtby (WSH)

After playing 15 of their first 23 contests at Madison Square Garden, the Rangers will begin a four-game road trip on Sunday afternoon. New York is looking to rebound after its season-high four-game winning streak came to an end with a 3-2 setback to Ottawa on Friday. Washington, which won its last four contests at the Verizon Center, dropped a 5-2 decision to the New York Islanders on Saturday. Philipp Grubauer finished with 40 saves in his first NHL start, but Braden Holtby will likely be back in net on Sunday. Holtby made 38 saves in the Capitals' 2-1 road loss to the Rangers on Feb. 17. The Capitals are 11-6-2 in their last 19 regular-season games versus the Rangers.

Columbus Blue Jackets at Detroit Red Wings (-181, 5.5)

Probable starting goaltenders: Steve Mason (CBJ), Jimmy Howard (DET)

The Red Wings have dropped their last three contests against their Central Division rivals, including a 3-0 loss in Columbus on Saturday that clinched the Blue Jackets’ first season-series victory in franchise history. The only time the Red Wings defeated Columbus was a 4-3 shootout victory in the second game of the season for both teams. Columbus has won four straight after failing to win consecutive games in the first two months of the season. The under is 6-0 in Detroit’s last six overall.

Montreal Canadiens at Florida Panthers (+121, 5.5)

Probable starting goaltenders: Peter Budaj (MTL), Jacob Markstrom (FLA)

The Eastern Conference-leading Montreal Canadiens conclude their five-game road trip Sunday as they take on the Florida. The Habs improved to 3-1-0 on its trek with a 4-3 comeback win over the Tampa Bay Lightning last time out. Florida is coming off a 3-2 overtime loss to the Winnipeg Jets on Friday. The Panthers lost the first two contests of their three-game season series with Montreal by a combined score of 5-1. The over is 6-0 in the Canadiens’ last six overall.

Winnipeg Jets at New Jersey Devils (-127, 5.5)

Probable starting goaltenders: Ondrej Pavelec (WPG), Johan Hedberg (NJ)

The Winnipeg Jets conclude their four-game road trip on Sunday when they visit the New Jersey Devils, who have just one win in their last eight games (1-6-1). Winnipeg is coming off victories against Tampa Bay and Florida to improve to 8-5-1 on the road. The Jets have played under the total in five consecutive games.

New York Islanders at Pittsburgh Penguins (-193, 5.5)

Probable starting goaltenders: Evgeni Nabokov (NYI), Tomas Vokoun (PIT)

Penguins captain Sidney Crosby has recorded 68 points (20 goals, 48 assists) in 38 career meetings with the Islanders. Crosby scored in both regulation and the shootout on Saturday to lift Pittsburgh to its fourth consecutive victory with a 5-4 triumph over Toronto. The Islanders are 3-0-1 in their last four to pull within one point of eighth place in the Eastern Conference. The road team is 4-1 in the last five meetings.

Edmonton Oilers at Chicago Blackhawks (-219, 5.5)

Probable starting goaltenders: Devan Dubnyk (EDM), Corey Crawford (CHI)

After setting a record by earning at least one point in each of its first 24 contests of the season, Chicago had its franchise-record 11-game winning streak snapped when it dropped a 6-2 decision to the Avalanche in Colorado on Friday. The regulation loss was the Blackhawks' first in 31 contests dating back to last season. Edmonton began its franchise-high nine-game road trip by earning three of a possible four points. But the Oilers have struggled since, going 0-4-1 with two games left on the trek. The team enters Sunday's contest having been shut out by the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday and the Nashville Predators the following night. Edmonton has been outscored 24-14 while going 1-4-2 through the first seven games of its trip, which began with a 3-2 overtime loss in Chicago on Feb. 25. The Oilers have lost their last five games against Central Division opponents.

Buffalo Sabres at Philadelphia Flyers (-140, 5.5)

Probable starting goaltenders: Ryan Miller (BUF), Michael Leighton (PHI)

The Philadelphia Flyers followed a listless performance against Boston on Saturday with a spirited team meeting. Whether the words will carry any weight will be decided on Sunday when Philadelphia attempts to snap a three-game losing skid against the visiting Buffalo Sabres. Buffalo has at least recorded a pair of points during its three-game losing skid (0-1-2). Thomas Vanek showed signs of overcoming his recent struggles by snapping his six-game goalless drought in Thursday's 3-2 shootout loss to New Jersey. The Austrian certainly busted out the last time he saw Philadelphia, collecting a career-high five points (two goals, three assists) in the Sabres' 5-2 win on Jan. 20. Buffalo is 0-5 in its last five Sunday games.

Vancouver Canucks at Minnesota Wild (+115, 5)

Probable starting goaltenders: Cory Schneider (VAN), Matt Hackett (MIN)

With one win in their last six games, the Vancouver Canucks are searching for answers as they watch their Northwest Division lead disappear. Vancouver skated to a 4-1 triumph in its previous trip to Minnesota this season and also claimed a 2-1 decision at home against the Wild, who sit two points behind the Canucks after going 6-3-1 in their last 10 games. Minnesota is 4-0-1 in its last five home games and 8-2-1 at Xcel Energy Center on the season. The Canucks are 0-8 in their last eight Sunday games.

San Jose Sharks at Colorado Avalanche (-120, 5)

Probable starting goaltenders: Antti Niemi (SJ), Semyon Varlamov (COL)

The Avalanche have played much better at home, where they’ve gone 7-2-1, as opposed to the road (2-8-3). Colorado has won four straight home games but hasn't captured five in a row at the Pepsi Center since an eight-game run from Nov. 30-Dec. 23, 2011. The Avalanche have not posted a regulation victory over the Sharks since a 4-2 home triumph on Oct. 1, 2009. San Jose has gone 10-0-3 in 13 meetings since that setback. The under is 5-0-2 in San Jose’s last seven road games.

St. Louis Blues at Anaheim Ducks (-139, 5.5)

Probable starting goaltenders: Jaroslav Halak (STL), Jonas Hiller (ANH)

The Anaheim Ducks will look to match a franchise record with their 11th consecutive home victory on Sunday when the St. Louis Blues pay a visit to the Honda Center. The Ducks' lone loss at the Honda Center this season was a 5-0 setback to Vancouver on Jan. 25. Anaheim F Bobby Ryan, who is riding a six-game point streak, has 23 points (13 goals, 10 assists) in 16 career games versus St. Louis. The Ducks are 8-0 in their last eight clashes with Central opponents.

Bank shots: NBA betting news and notes
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the week of March 3-March 9.

                    Hottest ATS

Denver Nuggets (4-0 SU, 4-0 ATS)

Denver continues to be a great bet (39-24-1 ATS) as well as a profitable over play (38-26 O/U). The Nuggets have won eight straight games, covering in seven of those contests. Denver visits Phoenix Monday before returning to Pepsi Center for two tough games against the Knicks and Grizzlies.

                    Coldest ATS

Charlotte Bobcats (0-4 SU, 0-4 ATS)

Charlotte has dropped 10 straight games straight up and ATS, making it great fade material. The Bobcats host the Celtics Tuesday before heading to Toronto for a clash with the Raptors.

                    Best over play

                    Orlando Magic (1-3 SU, 3-1 over/under)

The Magic stayed true to their form as a good over play this past week. Orlando has played over the number in six of its last eight to improve its season O/U mark to a very profitable 34-25-4 for its over bettors. The Magic host Philadelphia and Los Angeles (Lakers) early this week before embarking on a four-game road trip.

                    Best under play

                    Minnesota Timberwolves (1-2 SU, 0-3 over/under)

The Timberwolves are devastated by injuries and had only nine healthy players on their roster this past week. Star F Kevin Love (hand) is targeting a mid-March return, but the T-Wolves could continue to struggle to score until he's healthy. Minnesota is averaging just 85.3 points per game over its last three games, nearly 10 points lower than its season average (94.7). The Timberwolves host Dallas Sunday and then San Antonio rolls into Minny on Tuesday.

                    Scouting the schedule:

-The Brooklyn Nets play nine of their next 11 games away from the Barclays Center. The Nets have been a good under play away from home, posting a 10-18-1 O/U mark.

-The Houston Rockets begin a season-long seven-game homestand Wednesday when the Phoenix Suns visit. The Rockets are 18-11 O/U at the Toyota Center.

Pucking the trends: This week's best NHL bets
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the week of March 3-March 9.

                          Hot team

                          Pittsburgh Penguins (3-0 SU)

The Penguins have won four straight after suffering back-to-back losses to close out February. Pittsburgh has tallied 20 goals during its current win streak, but has also allowed 17 markers in the process. The Penguins host the Islanders Sunday before Boston visits The Igloo.

                          Cold team

                          Philadelphia Flyers (0-3 SU)

The Flyers are being ripped by the media and their fans for their lackluster effort in Saturday’s 3-0 loss to the Bruins. Philadelphia is 0-9 when trailing after the first period and must find a way to bounce back in games moving forward if it hopes to make the playoffs. Buffalo visits the Wells Fargo Center Sunday before the Flyers play a home-and-home with the Devils.

                          Best over play

                          Toronto Maple Leafs (2-2 SU, 4-0 over/under)

The Maple Leafs have struggled to keep the puck out of their own net against the top teams in the East. Pittsburgh and Boston lit the lamp four times on Toronto last week and Montreal scored five times on Ben Scrivens the week prior. The Maple Leafs, who have played over the number in seven consecutive games, are second in the league in penalty minutes (415 PIM), giving their opposition plenty of power play time on a regular basis. Toronto visits Winnipeg Tuesday and then returns to the Air Canada Centre for a three-game homestand.

                          Best under play

                          Detroit Red Wings (2-2 SU, 0-4 over/under)

Goals are a dime a dozen right now in Detroit. The Red Wings have gone low in six consecutive games, scoring only eight goals during the under run. Detroit hosts Columbus Sunday before making a run to Canada to play the Flames, Oilers and Canucks.

                          Scouting the schedule:

-The New York Rangers play four tough road games in six days this week. The Rangers will visit Washington, Buffalo, Winnipeg and Pittsburgh on the trip. New York is 1-6-1 O/U away from MSG.

-The Nashville Predators hit the road for five road games in seven days beginning Tuesday in Dallas. The Predators are 4-7-1-1 away from home, playing under the total in nine of those 13 away games.
