Penn State at (5) Michigan (-23.5)

Losers of three of four, the Michigan Wolverines have an excellent opportunity to right the ship when they host last-place Penn State. The Nittany Lions came close to their first conference win Thursday, falling 74-72 to Iowa. Penn State has lost 14 consecutive road games in the Big Ten but at the very least, it might be getting closer, as three of the Lions' last four games have been decided by single digits. The Wolverines are 0-4 ATS in their last four games overall.

(14) Ohio State at (19) Wisconsin (-2)

When Ohio State and Wisconsin played on Jan. 29, the Buckeyes used a second-half tear to pull out a win. But Sunday's rematch in Madison features a much-improved Badger squad that has gone 3-1 since that defeat, including a win over then-No. 3 Michigan. Both these teams, as well as Michigan, are two games behind Big Ten co-leaders Indiana and Michigan State. The loser of this game will have its conference championship hopes essentially dissolved, while the winner lives to see another day. The Badgers have won nine of their last 10 at home against the Buckeyes, with the lone Ohio State victory since 2000 coming last season.

(12) Louisville at South Florida (+13)

Louisville recovered from its epic 104-101 five-overtime loss at Notre Dame last weekend, defeating St. John’s 72-58 at home. The Cardinals are back on the road on Sunday, visiting the South Florida Bulls, who haven’t won in seven games. Louisville has outscored its opponents 975-767 in the second half this season and is holding foes to 39.6% scoring from the field. The Cardinals are 8-0 ATS in the last eight meetings.

(9) Arizona at Utah (+9)

When Arizona defeated Utah in early January, the Wildcats were in the midst of a run where just about everything was going their way, especially late in games. Arizona hopes to recapture some of the same magic to avoid its first three-game losing streak in nearly three years when they visit the Utes. Arizona improved to 14-0 with its Jan. 5 victory over Utah, capping a three-game stretch in which it won each game in the final seconds or overtime. The Wildcats are 6-4 since that contest and have dropped two straight following a four-game winning streak. Utah is 2-2 over its last four after losing seven of eight to begin conference play. The Utes have won both of their home games in February and are coming off a 60-55 victory over Arizona State. The road team is 6-0 ATS in the last six meetings.

(4) Miami-Florida at Clemson (+7)

Miami was unranked as recently as four weeks ago, but turned heads with a 27-point victory over then-No. 1 Duke on Jan. 23. Historically, the Hurricanes have struggled at Clemson, owning a 1-5 all-time record, but Miami has had no problems playing on the road this season. They’ve won nine straight away from home, which is tied for the second-most road wins in the nation heading into the weekend. Clemson is coming off a 56-53 win Thursday against Georgia Tech but the Tigers are 0-4 against ranked teams this season. The Hurricanes are 1-5 ATS in the last six meetings.

Games to Watch

As the men’s college basketball regular season enters its final few weeks, victories at this time of the year are often worth their weight in gold for the top teams in the nation in terms of jockeying for position for the upcoming madness of March. This is especially true this season as everything from the top four seeds to the last four in remains completely up for grabs.

The following is a brief preview of a key matchup on each day’s slate this week along with a few facts and figures to help handicap the game.

Tuesday, Feb. 19

No. 1 Indiana Hoosiers vs. No. 4 Michigan State Spartans (ESPN, 7:00 p.m.)

Indiana should hold onto the No.1 spot in the nation after posting routine victories over Nebraska and Purdue last week while covering a double-digit spread each time. It is now 23-3 SU and 14-10 ATS this season with the total staying UNDER in three of its last four games. The Hoosiers remain the second-highest scoring team in the country with an average of 82.9 points a game and are shooting an impressive 50.2 percent from the field, which is ranked fourth overall. Cody Zeller has led the way all season long with 16.6 points and 8.2 rebounds a game.

The Spartans are tied with Indiana atop the Big Ten standings at 11-2 but they lost the first meeting this season in late January 75-70 as 9 ½-point road underdogs. They are 22-4 SU overall and 10-11-2 ATS. The total has gone OVER in four of their last six games. Michigan State brings a five-game winning streak into this showdown that includes double-digit victories over Minnesota and Michigan. It has averaged 73.4 points a game during this run while holding its opponents to just 61.2 points a game.

Wednesday, Feb. 20

No. 9 Kansas Jayhawks vs. No. 14 Oklahoma State Cowboys (ESPN, 9:00 p.m.)

Kansas bounced back from a rare three-game losing streak with back-to-back wins over Kansas State and Texas. It routed the then-No.10 Wildcats by 21 points as a 7 ½-point home favorite. The Jayhawks improved to 21-4 SU on the year and into a three-way tie atop the Big 12 standings with Kansas State and Oklahoma State at 9-3. They are just 2-4 ATS in their last six games (11-13 ATS overall) and the total has gone OVER in three of their last five games. Kansas has three players scoring in double figures led by Ben McLemore’s 16.7 points a game.

The Cowboys find themselves in the thick of the Big 12 regular season title race as a result of a seven-game winning streak that includes a thrilling 84-79 overtime victory over rival Oklahoma this past Saturday as nine-point home favorites. They are 19-5 SU and 12-10-1 ATS overall with the total going OVER in six of their last seven games. Oklahoma State is averaging 73 points a game while shooting 44 percent from the field. Both Marcel Brown and Marcus Smart are scoring over 15 points a game with Smart leading the team in assists with 4.5 a game.

Thursday, Feb. 21

No. 6 Duke Blue Devils vs. Virginia Tech Hokies (ESPN, 9:00 p.m.)

Duke should tumble a bit in the latest polls after falling to Maryland this past Saturday 83-81 as a four-point favorite on the road. The loss dropped the Blue Devils to 22-3 SU and 13-12 ATS. They now trail Miami by three full games in the ACC standings at 9-3 SU in conference play. The total went OVER the 141-point line against the Terrapins after staying UNDER in three of their previous four games. Duke is averaging 78.1 points a game and shooting 47.2 percent from the floor mainly behind the efforts of Mason Plumlee (17.6 points) and Seth Curry (16.9 points). Plumlee also leads the team in rebounds with 10.4 a game.

The Hokies current losing streak reached eight games with Saturday’s 90-86 overtime loss to NC State as 14-point road underdogs. They are 11-14 SU overall and a dismal 2-10 in conference play. Virginia Tech has gone 4-2-1 ATS in its last seven games to improve to 10-10-2 ATS on the year. The total has gone OVER in five of its last eight games. The team as a whole is averaging 71.4 points a game while shooting just 42 percent from the floor. However, Erick Green has been a one-man show with 25.3 points and 4.1 assists a game while hitting 47.3 percent of his shots from the field.

Friday, Feb. 22

St. Louis Billikens vs. No. 15 Butler Bulldogs (ESPNU, 7:00 p.m.)

The Billikens seven-game winning streak has them in second-place in the Atlantic 10 standings with a record of 8-2. They are 19-5 SU overall and 13-9 ATS. They have a huge showdown against VCU, which leads the conference, at home this Tuesday before heading on the road for this matchup. They have covered the spread in all seven games and the total has gone OVER in five of those contests. Saint Louis has five different players scoring at least nine points a game and as a team it is averaging 68.5 points while giving-up 57.8 points to its opponents.

Butler will play Duquesne at home this Tuesday before hosting the Billikens on Friday night. It is in third-place in the A-10 standings at 8-3 and is 21-5 SU overall. It has failed to cover in four of its last six games but is still a profitable 14-9-1 ATS on the year. The total has stayed UNDER in three of its last four games. The Bulldogs are putting up an average of 70.6 points a game while shooting 45.7 percent from the field. Rotnei Clarke leads the team in scoring with 17.2 points, but they have four additional players scoring in double figures.

Spot bets are a classic handicapping practice that have proven profitable no matter what sport you’re betting. Whether it’s a team looking past this week’s opponent, one coming off a hard-fought victory, or a rough patch of schedule, bettors can find value picking their spots.

Lookahead spot

The Georgetown Hoyas are the hottest team in college hoops, winning seven in a row SU and ATS. Their most recent victory - a 62-55 road win over Cincinnati as 4-point underdogs – has Georgetown locked in a three-way tie with Syracuse and Marquette atop the Big East at 9-3 in conference play. The Hoyas already have a win over the Golden Eagles and can put some space between them and the Orange with a victory at Syracuse Saturday.

But before Georgetown invades the Carrier Dome, it hosts Big East bottom-feeder DePaul Wednesday. The Blue Demons, however, aren’t going to roll over. They recently snapped a nine-game losing skid and have covered in three straight outings. DePaul, which is 6-2 ATS on the road, covered at Georgetown last year and is 3-1 ATS in its last four versus the Hoyas.

Letdown spot

We caught the Philadelphia Flyers with their guard down at the start of the NHL season, coming off an intense home opener with the rival Penguins only to fall flat versus the Sabres the next night. History has a tendency to repeat itself, especially in compressed schedules like this year’s lockout-shortened slate which leaves little time for correction.

Philadelphia finds itself in a similar situation, visiting Pittsburgh Wednesday before returning home to host floundering Florida Thursday. The Flyers, who have a frantic schedule this week with three games in four nights, could be low on gas by the time they play the Panthers. That game is the first one back in Wells Fargo Arena after a six-game road trip.

Scheduling spot

The Boston Celtics needed the All-Star break more than any team in the league. Their aging roster is down three players – Rajon Rondo, Jared Sullinger, Leandro Barbosa – and star small forward Paul Pierce is nursing a pinched nerve in his neck. The Celtics went into the four-day layoff on a high note, winning eight of nine games (7-2 ATS) before the break, but face a daunting challenge starting Tuesday.

Boston opens the second half of the schedule on a five-game Western Conference swing, beginning in Denver Tuesday. The Celtics, who are a dismal 8-15 SU and 7-15-1 ATS on the road, then travel to Los Angeles (Lakers), Phoenix, Portland and Utah. In fact, Boston plays at home only twice in the next 11 contests – a span of nearly a month.

(1) Indiana at (5) Michigan State (-1.5)

A five-game winning streak has Michigan State knocking on the door to sole possession of first place in the Big Ten. Michigan State has not lost since dropping a 75-70 decision in Bloomington, Ind., on Jan. 27 and is currently tied with the Hoosiers atop the conference. The Spartans have held their last four opponents to an average of 57.8 points and sit second in the Big Ten in scoring defense (59.1). The Hoosiers lead the Big Ten in scoring offense (82.9) and have gone for 80 or more points in four of their last five victories. Indiana is 1-8 ATS in the last nine meetings at Michigan State.

(20) Marquette at Seton Hall (+5.5)

Marquette has won three of four following Saturday's impressive 79-69 victory over Pittsburgh that extended its home winning streak to 23 games - the fourth-longest active streak nationally. The Pirates are careening in the other direction, having dropped seven consecutive games and 11 of their last 12 to move within one game of the conference cellar. Marquette has won 10 of 12 meetings overall but Seton Hall captured the last home matchup in March 2011. The Pirates are 8-1 ATS in their last nine Tuesday games.

Duquesne at (15) Butler (-16.5)

Before they take on a difficult stretch run, the Butler Bulldogs get one more very winnable game when they host last-place Duquesne. The Bulldogs will enter a game behind first-place and nationally ranked Virginia Commonwealth in the Atlantic 10 and one-half game back of Saint Louis. The Bulldogs are coming off a 68-63 win at Fordham on Saturday. After scoring less than 70 points in eight straight games, the Dukes erupted for 84 at Temple before suffering a 67-62 loss to Rhode Island Saturday. The Bulldogs are 1-4-1 ATS in their last six games overall.

(24) VCU at Saint Louis (-3.5)

With regular-season games dwindling, the winner of Tuesday's tilt between Virginia Commonwealth and Saint Louis might very well be to determine the Atlantic 10 champion. The Billikens find themselves a half-game behind the Rams, who are on top in their inaugural season in the conference. Both teams have responded to two-game slumps with extended winning streaks (five for Virginia Commonwealth, seven for Saint Louis) and it'll be a battle of offense against defense to see which streak continues. The Rams enter boasting the league's top scoring offense, averaging over 78 points per game, over five points better than the next-best team. But the Billiken defense, the Atlantic 10's best, has allowed just 104 combined points in the past two games. Saint Louis is 7-0 ATS in its last seven games overall.

Virginia at (2) Miami-Florida (-8)

Virginia shot 58.5 percent from the field in Saturday’s 93-81 loss at North Carolina. That’s the Cavaliers’ best shooting in a defeat since 2003, when they made 59.2 percent in a 78-77 loss at Clemson. Virginia is also holding its opponents to 54 points per game and is ranked first in the ACC in scoring defense. Miami extended its winning streak to 13 games with a thrilling win at Clemson Sunday and is now one win shy of tying a school record of 14 consecutive victories. The Hurricanes are undefeated in ACC play with a 12-0 mark and 5-0 all-time at home against the Cavaliers. Miami is 14-3 ATS in its last 17 home games.

(4) Florida at Missouri (+4.5)

Florida shot 59.3 percent from the field and forced 21 turnovers in an 83-52 triumph over Missouri on Jan. 19. Each the Gators’ 11 SEC victories have come by at least 17 points, but Missouri has been almost as dominant at home, going 14-0 at Mizzou Arena with 12 of those wins coming by at least 14 points. Florida is 6-1 ATS in its last seven road games.
