      • Thursday's Tips

        February 20, 2013

        **Cincinnati at Connecticut**

--Connecticut (17-7 straight up, 10-10 against the spread) is No. 31 in the RPI Rankings but is banned from going to both the Big East and NCAA Tournament during Kevin Ollie’s first year as head coach following the retirement of Jim Calhoun, who won three national championships in Storrs.

--UConn has won 12 of 14 home games while posting a 4-6 spread record. The Huskies had won five of their last six games, including a huge home win over Syracuse last week, before they dropped a 70-61 decision to Villanova on Saturday as 4.5-point home ‘chalk.’

--In the win over the ‘Cuse, UConn’s guard combination of Shabazz Napier and Ryan Boatright combined to score 27 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the field with 11 assists and five steals. However, in the loss to ‘Nova, Napier and Boatright combined to score just six points, missed all seven of their shots from 3-point range, made just 3-of-15 from the field and committed 10 turnovers. Alas, we can conclude that UConn goes as its backcourt combination goes.

--Napier averages a team-high 16.1 points per game and has a 112/49 assists-to-turnovers ratio. The junior from Roxbury, MA., has a team-high 49 steals. Boatright scores at a 15.4 PPG clip with a 101/70 assists-to-turnovers ratio and 38 steals.

--Cincinnati (19-7 SU, 10-12 ATS) has lost three of its last four games both SU and ATS, including last Friday night’s 62-55 loss to Georgetown as a four-point home favorite. Senior guard JaQuon Parker had a team-high 15 points and six rebounds in the losing effort. The Bearcats won the rebounding battle 36-27 and held their opponent to a reasonable 62-point output. However, a lack of offense continued to kill this team, as it made only 31.5 percent of its shots from the field, 4-of-24 from 3-point land (16.7%) and 17-of-30 from the free-throw line (56.7%).

--Junior guard/forward Sean Kilpatrick leads the Bearcats in scoring, averaging 18.0 points and 5.4 rebounds per contest. But Kilpatrick has been held under his scoring average in three of the last four games, while dishing out only eight assists compared to 11 turnovers.

--UConn is 3-5 against the RPI Top 50, 8-7 versus the RPI Top 100.

--Mick Cronin’s squad has won four of its six road games both SU and ATS. The Bearcats are 40th in the RPI Rankings, going 4-5 against the RPI Top 50 and 9-7 against Top 100 foes.

--Cincy has been an underdog only twice this year, compiling a 2-0 spread record with an outright win at Pittsburgh (70-61) and a narrow loss at Syracuse (57-55).

--When these teams met in Storrs on Jan. 12 of last season, Cincy collected a 70-67 upset win as a 6.5-point road underdog. The 137 combined points slipped ‘over’ the 130-point total. Napier had a game-high 27 points and seven assists for the Huskies in defeat, while Kilpatrick had a team-high 16 points for the winners thanks to four treys on nine attempts from beyond the arc.

--The ‘under’ has cashed at an NCAA-best 16-3 overall clip for the Bearcats, going 5-1 in their six true road assignments.

--Totals have been an overall wash (9-9) for UConn this season, but the ‘under’ is on a 4-2 run in its last six outings.

--Tip-off on ESPN is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Eastern.

        **Brigham Young at Saint Mary’s**

--This is a huge revenge game for BYU, which let a late second-half lead get away and lost a 70-69 decision to Saint Mary’s on Jan. 16 as a five-point home favorite. Gaels’ All-WCC point guard Matthew Dellavedova buried a leaning, double-pump 32-footer at the buzzer to propel his team into the win column. Dellavedova finished with 18 points and eight assists compared to only one turnover. Stephen Holt scored a team-high 22 points for Randy Bennett’s team. Tyler Haws had a game-high 23 points for the Cougars.

--BYU (20-8 SU, 12-15 ATS) is No. 62 in the RPI Rankings and its resume could certainly use a boost with a big road win in this spot. The Cougars have lost six of nine games to RPI Top 100 teams and are winless in three games against RPI Top 50 foes (at Iowa St., at Gonzaga and vs. Notre Dame on a neutral court) with each defeat coming by double-digit margins. With that said, Dave Rose’s team hosts Gonzaga (RPI: 12) next Thursday and could get a shot at the Bulldogs and/or Gaels again at the WCC Tournament.

--BYU is mired in a 0-4 ATS slump. The Cougars suffered a pair of costly outright losses at San Diego and vs. San Francisco on Feb. 7 and Feb. 9. Since then, they have won back-to-back contests, including Tuesday’s 70-68 home win over Utah St. as 12-point home favorites. Haws scored a game-high 27 points.

--Saint Mary’s (22-5 SU, 12-11-1 ATS) has won 13 of its 14 home games but has gone just 5-7 ATS. The lone home loss came to Gonzaga last Thursday by a 77-60 count.

--Bennett’s bunch bounced back from the defeat to Mark Few’s squad by winning 61-50 Saturday at Loyola-Marymount. However, the Gaels failed to cover the number as 13.5-point road ‘chalk.’ Holt had 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field.

--Saint Mary’s is No. 51 in the RPI Rankings, posting a 3-3 record against the RPI Top 100 with wins at BYU, at Santa Clara and vs. Harvard. The Gaels have lost all three games to RPI Top 50 opponents (at Gonzaga, vs. Gonzaga and at No. Iowa).

--Dellavedova averages a team-high 15.8 PPG and had dished out 174 assists compared to only 71 turnovers.

--BYU is led by Haws, a sophomore who spent the last two seasons on a Mormon mission. (How good would BYU have been during Jimmer Fredette’s senior campaign if Brandon Davies hadn’t been suspended and Haws hadn’t been away on a mission?!) Haws is averaging 21.2 points and 4.6 rebounds per game, while Davies averages 17.7 points and 7.6 boards per contest.

--In BYU’s first year in the WCC last season, Saint Mary’s swept a pair of regular-season meetings. Going back further to 2005, the Gaels have won four of five meetings and taken the cash in each of those encounters. The ‘under’ is also 4-1 in the last five meetings.

--The ‘under’ is 11-8 overall for BYU although the ‘over’ has hit in four of its last five games. The ‘under’ is 4-3 for the Cougars in their seven true road assignments.

--The ‘under’ is 10-8 overall for Saint Mary’s, 7-3 in its last 10 outings. The ‘under’ is 5-4 for the Gaels in their home games with a total.

--ESPN2 will have the telecast at 11:00 p.m. Eastern.

        **B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

--Indiana captured its first win at Breslin Center since 1991 by beating Michigan St. 72-68 Tuesday as a one-point underdog in front of a raucous crowd in East Lansing. Playing at less than 100 percent with a foot injury, IU senior slasher Victor Oladipo made all the plays at crunch time, including six points in the final 47 seconds. Oladipo’s tip-in gave the Hoosiers the lead for good when Spartans’ forward Denzel Washington fell asleep and failed to box out. Next, Oladipo dunked on a run-out and buried a pair of free throws to put the game on ice. Christian Watford finished with 12 points and his three-point play the hard way was pivotal when IU trailed by four with less than 90 seconds remaining.

--Missouri remained unbeaten at home with Tuesday’s 63-60 come-from-behind win over Florida as a five-point underdog. The Tigers hooked up money-line supporters with a plus-180 payout and improved to 82-4 at home since 2008. Laurence Bowers, who was injured when UF stroked the Tigers by 31 points at The O-Dome in January, scored 17 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.

--For UF, the loss was eerily reminiscent of a loss at Arizona before Christmas and even more similar to Elite Eight setbacks against Butler and Louisville that ended the Gators’ seasons just shy of the Final Four the last two years. Like the losses to Butler and U of L, Billy Donovan’s team led nearly the entire game and had comfortable cushions with eight minutes remaining. But at crunch time UF settled for jumpers and they didn’t fall. The Gators took 33 shots from 3-point land at Mizzou compared to only 21 attempts from inside the line.

--Indiana State’s at-large hopes are vanishing fast. The Sycamores lost their third straight game Tuesday when they fell at home to Wichita St. by a 66-62 score. Even worse, they cost their backers like me as 3.5-point underdogs.

--Saint Louis improved to 20-5 overall and took sole possession of first place in the Atlantic 10 thanks to Tuesday’s 76-62 win over VCU as a two-point home favorite. The Billikens led by 17 at intermission and never let the Rams cut the deficit to single digits in the second half. VCU backers as a three-point favorite for halftime wagers got a miracle push thanks to several meaningless baskets by the Rams in the final two minutes.

Duke Blue Devils at Virginia Tech Hokies (+13, 151)

Duke looks to rebound from a loss to Maryland when it visits Virginia Tech on Thursday. The No. 6 Blue Devils have lost three of their last 10 games and are a distant second in the Atlantic Coast Conference behind runaway leader Miami. The Blue Devils are playing back-to-back road games for just the second time all season. Virginia Tech has lost eight consecutive contests since defeating Wake Forest on Jan. 19.

The Hokies are experiencing a dismal season in James Johnson’s first season as coach. Virginia Tech is in last place in the 12-team conference. Duke’s loss to Maryland came in its fourth contest in 10 days and coach Mike Krzyzewski said afterwards that his squad was tired. “We’re playing on fumes and I think you could tell that,” Krzyzewski said. The Blue Devils had enough energy to force 26 turnovers but were dominated by a 40-20 margin on the boards. Coach K is tied with legendary Kentucky coach Adolph Rupp for the third-most wins (876) at one school.

                TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT DUKE (22-3 SU, 9-3 ACC, 13-12-0 ATS): Senior forward Mason Plumlee struggled against Maryland with a season-low four points and only three rebounds. It was the worst all-around game of the season for a player averaging 17.6 points and 10.4 rebounds. “There is so much pressure for Mason to play outstanding,” Krzyzewski said afterwards. “That wears on you as the season goes on.” Plumlee has 14 double-doubles this season and is 13 rebounds away from becoming the ninth player in Duke history to reach 1,000 career points and rebounds. Senior guard Seth Curry averages 16.9 points and has made a team-best 62 3-pointers. Sophomore guard Quinn Cook has four steals in each of the past two games and has a team-leading 44 to go with a 12.3 scoring average.

ABOUT VIRGINIA TECH (11-14 SU, 2-10 ACC, 10-10-2 ATS): Freshman forward Marshall Wood had 14 points and 16 rebounds against North Carolina State for his first career double-double. Wood’s big outing raised his season averages to 4.7 points and 4.3 rebounds and repeating his stellar game against Duke would rate as a huge accomplishment. Senior guard Erick Green leads the nation with a 25.3 average and had 29 points and eight assists against the Wolfpack. Green is adept at getting to the free-throw line and is making 6.9 free throws per game. Junior forward Jarell Eddie averages 13 points.

                TRENDS:

                * Under is 7-1 in the last eight meetings.
                * Blue Devils are 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings in Virginia Tech.
                * Road team is 8-3-1 ATS in the last 12 meetings.

                TIP-INS:

                1. Duke is 40-8 against Virginia Tech and is 11-3 against the Hokies during Krzyzewski’s tenure.

                2. Curry has 12 20-point outings this season, including four of the past six games.

                3. Green has scored 20 or more points in 23 of Virginia Tech’s 25 games.

California Golden Bears at Oregon Ducks (-6, 132)

Oregon looks to end a 10-game losing streak to California on Thursday when the 23rd-ranked Ducks host the Bears in a key Pac-12 matchup. Oregon leads the conference by one game over Arizona and UCLA and holds a two-game lead over Arizona State and surging California. The Bears have won five of their last six games behind the play of junior guard Allen Crabbe, who was named Pac-12 player of week for the second time in a row.

After losing three straight, the Ducks have bounced back with three consecutive wins, including a 79-77 overtime victory over Washington State on Saturday. Center Tony Woods was ejected in the first half for throwing a deliberate elbow to the back of Brock Motum’s head, but he will be available against the Bears. The 6-11 senior had 14 points and eight rebounds in the Ducks’ 58-54 loss to California on Feb. 2.

                TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPNU.

ABOUT CALIFORNIA (16-9, 8-5 Pac-12, 9-13-1 ATS): Crabbe averaged 19.5 points and 7.5 rebounds in wins over UCLA and USC, but most everyone is talking about his altercation with coach Mike Montgomery during the Bears’ 76-68 win over the Trojans. Crabbe briefly left the game in the second half after being shoved by Montgomery, but the 66-year-old coach has apparently avoided a suspension. The incident has overshadowed the Bears’ recent surge, which includes wins over Oregon and Arizona. Junior forward Richard Solomon has scored 31 points over his last two games, and guard Justin Cobbs is averaging 14.8 points while shooting 85.5 percent from the foul line.

ABOUT NO. 23 OREGON (21-5, 10-3, 10-14 ATS): The Ducks have gradually adjusted to life without point guard Dominic Artis, who remains out indefinitely with a foot injury. Junior Johnathan Loyd has struggled to replace the talented freshman, but he had seven assists against Washington State. Senior forward E.J. Singler scored a season-high 24 points in the win, and he’s scored 20-plus points in two of his last three games. Forward Carlos Emory has averaged 15 points in the last two games, while Arsalan Kazemi ranks third in the Pac-12 with 9.6 rebounds per game. The Ducks lead the conference in rebounding margin at plus-7.8.

                TRENDS:

                * Golden Bears are 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings in Oregon.
                * Under is 4-1 in the last five meetings in Oregon.
                * Golden Bears are 7-2 ATS in the last nine meetings.
                * Road team is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.

                TIP-INS:

                1. Oregon, which is 15-1 at Matthew Knight Arena this season, had its 20-game home win streak snapped by Colorado on Feb. 7.

                2. Solomon had 13 points and 12 rebounds in 27 minutes in the Bears’ win over Oregon earlier this month.

                3. Singler became the winningest men’s basketball player in school history on Saturday with 82 career victories.

                          February 22, 2013

                          **Creighton at Saint Mary’s**

--As of early Friday night, Saint Mary’s (23-5 straight up, 12-12-1 against the spread) was installed as a 4.5-point favorite at most spots.

--Saint Mary's captured a key win Thursday night over BYU in a nail-biter. The Gaels pulled away with free throws in the final minute of a 64-57 victory as 8.5-point home favorites. Matthew Dellavedova scored a game-high 20 points, while Beau Levesque had 17 points and eight rebounds while burying all seven attempts from the charity stripe.

--With the win over BYU, Randy Bennett’s team improved to 14-1 SU and 5-8 ATS at home. The Gaels are led by Dellavedova, who leads the team in scoring (16.0 points per game), assists (6.4 APG) and steals (1.2 SPG).

--Since losing three in a row, Creighton (22-6 SU, 13-12-1 ATS) has won back-to-back games at Evansville (71-68) and vs. So. Illinois (59-45), failing to take the cash as a 4.5 and 14.5-point favorite in those spots, respectively.

--Creighton is mired in an atrocious 1-9-1 ATS slump in its last 11 games.

--Creighton is led by the head coach’s son, Doug McDermott, who averages 22.5 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. He is a legitimate first-team All-American candidate who plays incredibly efficient. McDermott shoots 55 percent from the field, 47.8 percent from 3-point land and makes 86.1 percent of his free throws.

--Both teams are in dire need of a victory to improve their at-large aspirations, but there’s no doubt that Saint Mary’s needs the win more. The Gaels are 4-3 against the RPI Top 100, but they are winless in a pair of contests against the RPI Top 50 with both defeats coming against Gonzaga.

--Saint Mary’s is 50th in the RPI Rankings, while Creighton is 47th in the RPI. However, the Bluejays have solid non-conference wins over Wisconsin, California, Arizona St. and Akron. The fact that the win over the Zips was the only game of those four at home is also worth noting. They are 8-4 against RPI Top 100 opponents.

--This is a quick turnaround for Saint Mary’s after playing late Thursday night. On the other hand, Creighton has had two extra days to prepare since Tuesday’s win over So. Illinois.

--The ‘under’ is 12-6 overall for the Bluejays, going 8-0 in their road assignments. The ‘under’ has connected in six straight Creighton games and nine of its last 10.

--The ‘under’ is 11-8 overall for the Gaels,

--ESPN will have the telecast at 6:00 p.m. Eastern.

                          **Missouri at Kentucky**

--As of early Friday night, most books had Kentucky (18-8 straight up, 8-15 against the spread) listed as a 1.5-point favorite.

--Kentucky has lost four in a row ATS and owns an abysmal 3-10 spread record in its last 13 games. The Wildcats have only covered the spread in one of their six SEC home outings at Rupp Arena.

--John Calipari’s team is going into its third game without freshman sensation Nerlens Noel, who went down for the season after suffering a torn ACL in a loss at Florida. Noel was leading the ‘Cats in rebounding (9.4 per game), field-goal percentage (59.0%), steals (2.1 SPG) and blocked shots (4.4 BPG).

--In Kentucky’s first game without Noel, it took the worst beating of Cal’s tenure in an 88-58 loss at Tennessee. Calipari had not tasted defeat so decisively since his first season as a head coach in 1989.

--UK staved off Vanderbilt’s upset bid at Rupp on Tuesday, capturing a 74-70 win as an 11-point home favorite. The Commodores sliced what was once a 13-point deficit to 61-59 with 3:57 remaining. But Kentucky avoided more embarrassment thanks to the play of Willie Cauley-Stein, who finished with a career-high 20 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots. Archie Goodwin added 16 points and six boards.

--Missouri (19-7 SU, 11-11 ATS) is coming off its best effort of the season, rallying from a 13-point second-half deficit to win a 63-60 decision over Florida as a five-point home underdog. The Tigers hooked up money-line supporters with a payout in the plus-185 range (risk $100 to win $185). Laurence Bowers, who missed the first meeting against the Gators, a blowout loss in Gainesville, came up big at crunch time en route to a 17-point, 10-rebound effort. Phil Pressey finished with seven points, 10 assists, six rebounds and three steals, while Jabari Brown had 12 points and drained three long jumpers from deep.

--As of early Friday morning, ESPN’s Joe Lunardi had Kentucky among his ‘first four teams out’ of the NCAA Tournament field. UK has an RPI of 48 and has zero wins over the RPI Top 50. The Wildcats’ best win is at Ole Miss (RPI: 57).

--UK has won 13 of its 15 home games, posting a mediocre 5-7 spread record.

--Missouri is 1-2 ATS in three true road games as an underdog and we should mention that Bowers was absent in both non-covers at Ole Miss and at Florida.

--Frank Haith’s squad is 3-3 against the RPI Top 50 with wins over Florida, Illinois and VCU. The Tigers, who are 33rd in the RPI, are 8-6 against the RPI Top 100.

--Although Missouri has seen the ‘under’ cash in three straight games, the ‘over’ is still 11-7 overall. The ‘under’ is 4-3 in the Tigers’ seven true road assignments.

--The ‘over’ is 12-10 overall for UK, 6-5 in its 11 home games with a total.

--Tip-off is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

                          **B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

--Two of the nation’s best players will be on display in Saturday’s BracketBuster matchup between Murray St. and South Dakota St. The Jackrabbits have a star in senior guard Nate Wolters, who averages 23.1 points, 5.8 rebounds and 5.6 assists per game. Wolters is shooting 49.4 percent from the floor and making 41.4 percent of his attempt from deep. The Racers are led by senior guard Isaiah Canaan, who averages 21.2 points and 4.2 assists per contest. This game will be played in Murray, KY., on ESPN2 at 8:00 p.m. Eastern. Most spots opened Murray St. as a three-point 'chalk.'

--D.J. Cooper will lead Ohio into Nashville to face Belmont in another intriguing BracketBuster showdown. Tip-off is slated for 10:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2. The Bruins are 29th in the RPI Rankings with a 6-3 record against RPI Top 100 foes. The Bobcats, who advanced to the Sweet 16 last season before losing to North Carolina in overtime, have an RPI of 75 with only one Top 100 win over Richmond.

--Most books opened Syracuse as a seven-point home favorite vs. Georgetown. I like the Hoyas, who have won eight in a row and 10 of their last 11 both SU and ATS.

--Florida will host Arkansas in a revenge game Saturday at 7:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPNU. The Razorbacks thumped the Gators at Bud Walton Arena a few weeks ago. UF will be in bounce-back mode after letting a double-digit second-half lead slip away Tuesday night at Missouri.

--Florida reserve forward Casey Prather has knocked down 17-of-23 shots (73.9%) from the field in the team’s last four games.

--Mark Fox’s Georgia squad can’t buy a break. The Bulldogs lost a heartbreaker in overtime at Ole Miss last Saturday when they didn’t get a call at the end of regulation. Then Thursday night in Fayetteville, UGA dropped a 62-60 decision at Arkansas when B.J. Young scored the go-ahead basket with six seconds remaining. The Bulldogs missed a good look at a potential tying bucket at the buzzer. Replays showed that Young’s foot appeared to hit the ground before he launched his winning shot. Alas, a travel was not called and UGA lost a third straight game. However, you won’t find UGA gambling supporters complaining, as it easily took the cash as an 11-point underdog. Georgia is now 7-1 ATS in its last eight games. The Dawgs play South Carolina on Saturday at home in Athens.

--With last night’s loss at Saint Mary’s, it’s clear that BYU will have to win the WCC Tournament to get to the Big Dance.

                          • Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Looking at college basketball numbers.....

Looking at which teams excel in different statistical categories.......

                            13) Tempo: Northwestern (LA) State of Southland plays fastest games in country; other teams who play a fast pace: North Carolina (5th), Cal-State Fullerton (7th), UMass (9th), BYU (11th) and Iona (21st).

Some pretty good teams are amongst those that play slowest pace: Western Illinois (#347), Denver (346), North Dakota State (343), Virginia (339) and Pitt (334). All those teams are near the top of their league's standings.

                            12) FG% defense: This is best measured by eFG%, which counts a made 3 as 1.5 baskets made: SF Austin (40.5%) leads country and they lead their league in wins: other strong teams in this important category: Kansas (3rd), Florida (5th), Georgetown (7th), Syracuse (8th), Cincinnati (9th).

                            11) FG% offense: also measured by eFG%: Creighton (59.3%) leads the nation, followed by Florida (2nd), Indiana (3rd), Belmont (4th), Denver (6th), Air Force (7th), Michigan (8th), Gonzaga (9th). All really good teams, and yes, Air Force has a good team this season.

                            10) Free-throw shooting: Davidson (81.5%) leads country, followed by Fullerton (2nd), Northern Iowa (4th), Iona (7th), Montana (10th), You have a lead late in games, it obviously helps to make foul shots.

Among the worst foul shooting teams: Marshall (57.2%) is worst team in country on foul line. Also struggling are TCU (344), St Peter's (341), Vandy (337), SF Austin (335), Wisconsin (331), Arizona State (329). Vanderbilt hit on 69.9% from line last year; 60.8% so far this year.

                            9) 3-point shooting: Indiana (42.8%) leads country, followed by Creighton (2nd), Duke (3rd), Harvard (4th), Virginia (6th), NC State (7th), Austin Peay is #12 in country behind arc, but is still an awful team (7-21)-- not good.

                            8) Blocked shots: Syracuse blocks 19.7% of opponents' shots, followed by St John's (2nd), Kansas (3rd), Memphis (4th), Cincinnati (6th), Kentucky (7th, but they'll fall without Noel in lineup), Arizona State (9th). Having a defensive presence inside makes opponents beat you from outside, and not everyone has great shooters.

                            7) Schedule: Top four teams in strength of schedule all play in Big Dozen: Minnesota-Michigan State-Wisconsin-Illinois. Other teams who played hard schedules: Duke (6, but very few road games, none out of ACC), USC (7), Miami (9), Marquette (11), Colorado (12), Louisville (15).

Long Beach State played the hardest pre-conference schedule, UCSB (2nd), Oakland (3), Pacific (8), Davidson (14), Montana (16). Some of the better teams in lower-ranked leagues load up in pre-conference to help their seed in case they make the NCAA tournament. Others do it for guarantee checks from the big-money teams.

                            6) Easiest schedules: Houston/Texas Tech played two softest pre-conference schedules; how does Maryland justify playing the 3rd-easiest? Also on the easy non-conference schedule list are Arizona State (341), Iowa (339), Pitt (334), my alma mater Albany (333), Oregon (330), Clemson (329).

Some teams use soft pre-conference schedules to build confidence by learning how to win: Ole Miss (326), Oregon (330), Arizona State (341), LSU (325).

Some coaches create an easy schedule to save their jobs.......lolol

                            5) Size matters, not as much as quickness, but size is measureable: New Mexico State/Maryland/Kentucky are three tallest teams in country; USC, UCLA, Arizona State and Miami are also in the top ten. Gonzaga is 13th.

Southern Illinois, Fullerton are two shortest teams in country; Southern Miss is very good, yet they're 11th-shortest team in country. Denver is #328, but they run Princeton offense, so size matters little less than most teams.

                            4) Who uses their bench the most? Not lot of strong teams on top of this list; Northern Illinois-Sam Houston State-Yale play their bench most minutes in country. Middle Tennessee is probbably best team in top 20 on that list.

Teams that sub the least: Larry Brown's SMU team subs the least; subs on Arizona State (345), Oakland (344), Cal (338), Kansas (329), Michigan (326) play least minutes in country.

                            3) Who forces the most turnovers? VCU/Louisville force most turnovers in country with their pressure; Rams (force turnovers on 29% of possessions, Cardinals 27.4%. Denver forces 3rd-most with a less-aggressive approach; their games are 2nd-slowest pace in country.

Ohio/Southern Miss also force a lot of turnovers- they're also really good .

                            2) Teams that excel on offensive boards have superior athleticism and size: leading the country in this area are Minnesota, Colorado State, Pitt, Syracuse, Southern Miss, Indiana and Cincinnati.

You haven't stopped these teams on offense until you get the rebound on their missed shots and that ain't easy.

                            1) Experienced teams have an edge: Valparaiso-Middle Tennessee- Colorado State are three most experienced teams in country; Ohio, Miami and Western Illinois are also in top 10. All those teams are having solid seasons.

Disappointing Temple is 11th in experience; team with as much experience as the Owls should be doing better than they are.

Texas is least-experienced team and it shows; St John's (342), BC (341), Michigan (340) and Kentucky (337) are also very young.
Remember the 3 G's Gambling, Golf, Girls not in any particular order.....

                              Saturday, February 23

Study group: Saturday’s Top 25 NCB betting notes
                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Seton Hall at (10) Louisville (-19.5)

Louisville hosts Seton Hall in search of its sixth win in seven games. Notwithstanding the Cardinals' 104-101 five-overtime loss to Notre Dame, they’ve earned four of those five victories by at least 14 points. Seton Hall is looking to snap an eight-game losing streak and fell 73-58 in the last meeting with Louisville on Jan. 9. The Pirates are 0-4 ATS in the last four clashes between the schools.

                              (2) Miami-Florida at Wake Forest (+8.5)

Miami, in first place in the ACC, looks to extend its win streak to 15 games when the Hurricanes visit Wake Forest. Miami is 10-1 on the road, including 7-0 in the ACC, while Wake Forest, which is 9-4 at home, has lost eight of its last 10 games. The Demon Deacons are coming off a 57-56 home loss to Georgia Tech last Saturday. The Hurricanes are 10-1 ATS in their last 11 Saturday games.

Southern Miss at (19) Memphis (-7)

The Golden Eagles have lost 10 straight to ranked teams while the Tigers have won 17 consecutive games. Southern Miss has won three in a row since losing 89-76 to Memphis two weeks ago and is 0-4-1 ATS in its last five road games.

                              (24) VCU at Xavier (+3.5)

Xavier needs to finish strong to extend its streak of seven consecutive NCAA tournament appearances. Both teams have a shot at securing a top-four finish in the Atlantic 10, which carries with it a bye past the opening round of the league tournament. The Rams have tallied 70-plus points in nine of their conference games, but are 0-4 ATS in their last four road contests.

                              (14) Oklahoma State at West Virginia (+4.5)

Oklahoma State dropped a full game behind Kansas and Kansas State with five games to play in the regular season after losing 68-67 in double-overtime to the Jayhawks on Wednesday. West Virginia is 0-7 against the six teams ranked above it in the Big 12 standings, which doesn’t bode well for the Mountaineers’ chances in the conference tournament. West Virginia is coming off a 10-point loss to Kansas State in a game that wasn't that close, and the Mountaineers lost 80-66 to Oklahoma State on Jan. 26 in Stillwater. The Cowboys are 4-1 ATS in their last five games following an ATS loss.

Washington State at (12) Arizona (-15)

Arizona is in a first-place tie in the Pac-12 with four regular-season games remaining and knows it can’t afford a stumble against last-place Washington State. The Wildcats notched a 79-65 road win over the Cougars, who have lost seven straight games and are just 1-7 on the road, on Feb. 2. Washington State is 0-5 ATS in the last five meetings.

                              TCU at (9) Kansas (-24.5)

The Horned Frogs have won once in conference play, taking down the Jayhawks 62-55 on Feb. 6. That defeated prompted Kansas coach Bill Self to say it was the worst team the school has put on the floor "since Dr. Naismith was there." TCU's stunning upset of the Jayhawks was its first-ever win in the Big 12, but the Horned Frogs have reverted to their losing ways since that landmark victory by dropping their last four games. TCU has won only once away from home -- at Rice on Dec. 22 -- and has been overwhelmed in six conference road games, losing by an average of 21.3 points. The Horned Frogs have lost 12 of 13 overall.

                              (16) New Mexico at (21) Colorado State (-6)

New Mexico has a chance to expand its lead in the Mountain West, while host Colorado State is looking to move into a tie for first when the two squads meet Saturday. The Lobos have a one-game lead over the Rams and can move closer to the conference regular-season crown if it can end Colorado State’s 27-game homecourt winning streak. The Rams are 14-0 at home this season. The Lobos are 1-4 ATS in their last five trips to Colorado St.

                              (11) Georgetown at (8) Syracuse (-7)

A share of first place is on the line with these teams in a three-way tie with Marquette atop the Big East, and a record crowd of 35,012 is expected to pack the Carrier Dome. Georgetown has won eight straight games since its surprising loss to South Florida, while Syracuse has won four of its last five. The Hoyas have dropped their last two games against Syracuse, which hasn’t lost at the Carrier Dome this season. Georgetown is 10-1 ATS in its last 11 games overall.

                              (20) Marquette at Villanova (-1)

The Golden Eagles have been stuck in a two-win, one-loss pattern since Jan. 12, but a victory against the Wildcats would be their third straight. Marquette’s bench has been outstanding, outscoring opposing reserves 736-351 this season. Villanova has won four of its last five following Monday’s 71-63 victory over Rutgers. The Wildcats are 6-1 ATS in their last seven Saturday games.

                              Arkansas at (4) Florida (-17.5)

The Razorbacks, who have won three straight, beat Florida 80-69 on Feb. 5. That's the most points allowed by a Gator defense ranked third in the country in scoring defense (53 points). The Gators are 12-0 at home while Arkansas is 1-5 in road SEC games.
