Connecticut and Marquette will ring in 2013 by kicking off Big East play.
Under head coach Kevin Ollie, and his new contract extension, the Huskies have begun this campaign well, led by the strong play of SG Shabazz Napier (16.5 PPG, 3.8 APG). The Golden Eagles, meanwhile, lack the same go-to scoring threats but have survived with their efficiency on the offensive end, making 47.7% of their field goals. SG Vander Blue (13.4 PPG) is the lead scoring threat for Marquette and 6-foot-8 PF Davante Gardner (12.5 PPG) is the team’s only other double-digit scorer, and he also paces the team in rebounds at 5.0 RPG. No Golden Eagles player averages even one block per game in a frontcourt that lacks size with Gardner and 6-foot-7 Jamil Wilson (9.0 PPG, 4.4 RPG) playing the majority of the time down there. They win through the play of PG Junior Cadougan (9.5 PPG, 4.6 APG) creating good looks for the team. Fellow guard Todd Mayo (7.0 PPG) will play just his third game of the season Tuesday, but has proven to be a threat on the defensive end with 2.0 SPG.
