    • Thursday Tips

      December 27, 2012

Things slow down a bit on the Thursday NBA card with a TNT doubleheader as four playoff clubs from last season hit the court. The late game showcases the hottest team in basketball as the Clippers go for 15 consecutive victories as the Celtics head out to the West Coast. We'll start in Oklahoma City with two of the league's most dynamic scorers meeting for the first time this season.

Mavericks at Thunder - 8:00 PM EST

Oklahoma City is going through its first losing streak of the season after falling at Minnesota and Miami over the last week. The Thunder returns home to battle the Mavs for the first time since sweeping Dallas in the opening round of last season's playoffs. Despite Dallas' below .500 start at 12-16, the Mavs will have Dirk Nowitzki at their disposal.

The former league MVP missed the first 27 games of the season following knee surgery, as he made his season debut in Sunday's blowout loss at San Antonio. Nowitzki came off the bench to score eight points in 20 minutes of action as the Mavs were trounced by the Spurs, 129-91 as 11-point road underdogs. Dallas has dropped six of its past seven games, including each of the last three by double-digits. Rick Carlisle's club is riding a five-game skid away from the American Airlines Center, as Dallas lost two of those games in overtime at Boston and Minnesota.

The Thunder ran off 12 straight victories before this recent two-game losing streak, as OKC couldn't avenge an NBA Finals loss to Miami on Christmas. Scott Brooks' team dropped a 103-97 decision to the Heat in a physical, back-and-forth affair as 2 ½-point underdogs. Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook combined for 54 points, but the Thunder shot just 42% from the floor in their fifth straight loss to Miami dating back to June.

In the first round sweep last season, the Thunder edged the Mavs by a combined four points in the opening two contests, as Dallas covered as a road 'dog each time. When the series shifted to the Lone Star State, OKC cashed in two away victories, including as road 'chalk' in the series clincher, 103-97. The Thunder claimed seven of eight meetings last season, but Dallas put together a perfect 4-0 ATS record at Chesapeake Energy Arena.

Celtics at Clippers - 10:30 PM EST

The Lakers had their five-game winning streak snapped at Denver on Wednesday, as the Clippers hope to not suffer the same fate on Thursday. The Clips have won a franchise-best 14 straight contests, while owning the top record in the Western Conference at 22-6. Boston travels west for the second of a four-game road trip, as the C's play three of the next four contests in California.

Vinny Del Negro's squad dropped a 42-point spot in the second quarter of Tuesday's 112-100 home triumph over the Nuggets, as six Clippers scored in double-figures. L.A. improved to 13-3 SU and 11-5 ATS at Staples Center, while posting a 5-2 SU/ATS record as a single-digit home favorite. The Christmas night 'over' snapped a four-game 'under' streak, as Denver ended L.A.'s streak of 10 straight contests of holding opponents to less than 100 points.

The Celtics picked up a solid Christmas Day victory at Brooklyn, 93-76 as 2 ½-point 'dogs, while beating the Nets for the first time in three tries this season. The win ended a five-game skid away from TD Garden, while the C's are just 1-4 ATS the last five attempts in the underdog situation. Doc Rivers' team owns a 1-6 ATS record the previous seven games off a cover, as three of those losses came on the highway.

In their lone meeting last season at Staples Center, the Celtics grabbed a 94-85 victory as 5 ½-point underdogs over the Clippers. Boston overcame a nine-point halftime deficit by outscoring Los Angeles, 55-37 in the second half. The 'dog has cashed in each of the last four matchups in L.A., but the Clips were listed in that role three times in this stretch.

      • Nowitzki tries to lead Dallas past OKC Thursday

        DALLAS MAVERICKS (12-16)

        at OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER (21-6)

        Tip-off: Thursday, 8:05 p.m. ET
Line: Oklahoma City -10, Total: 208

Dallas heads into Oklahoma City on Thursday night with the help of its superstar, Dirk Nowitzki, who returned a game ago after offseason knee surgery.

Nowitzki played just 20 minutes in a 129-91 drubbing in San Antonio on Sunday, but with his team performing decently in his absence, the Mavericks could be looking at a turning point to their season. The Thunder enter this game on a two-game losing skid and have also compiled eight straight ATS losses when hosting Dallas.

Can the Thunder cover this hefty spread? For the answer, connect to NBA Best Bets for all the Expert picks throughout the entire 2012-13 season. The experts have sizzled since Saturday with a collective 17-6 ATS (74%) mark, including a perfect 7-0 ATS record from ******* Dave, while ******* Brian is on a 4-0 ATS run since Sunday. The experts are 64% ATS (27-15) since Dec. 19 and are 53% ATS (171-155-10) on Best Bets for the season. ******* Gary is 55% ATS (33-27-3) Best Bets for the year, while Brian is at 53% ATS (43-38-3) after going 11-5 ATS (69%) since Dec. 14, and ******* Scott is also at 53% ATS (37-33). For NBA Totals, Scott is 42-28 (60%) for the season.

With Nowitzki out, SG O.J. Mayo has emerged as a big time scorer for the Mavericks and he should be able to take a lot of pressure off of Nowitzki. Mayo is averaging 19.3 PPG this season on 47% FG, and may be the best wing player that Dirk Nowitzki has played with since Michael Finley. C Chris Kaman, Nowitzki's teammate on the German national team, has also been playing well, averaging 13.7 PPG and 6.2 RPG for the Mavericks so far on the season while shooting 52% FG. Kaman’s play should only improve with Dirk as the two have developed some nice chemistry playing together over the summer.

The Thunder are coming off of a 103-97 Christmas Day loss to the Heat, but won’t be down on themselves as they played far from their best basketball and were right there at the end. SF Kevin Durant was unstoppable for Oklahoma City, scoring 33 points while grabbing seven rebounds in the losing effort. PG Russell Westbrook has been doing a great job scoring the basketball over the past three games, averaging 26.0 PPG over that stretch. Westbrook, however, must do a better job finding his teammates than he did in the loss to the Heat. He recorded only three assists in the loss compared to his season average of 8.6 APG. C Kendrick Perkins recently called out his team, saying they needed to start playing selfless basketball again, and it’ll be interesting to see if they respond.

        • Clippers seek 15th straight victory on Thursday

          BOSTON CELTICS (14-13)

          at LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS (22-6)

          Tip-off: Thursday, 10:35 p.m. ET
Line: Los Angeles -8.5, Total: 190

The Clippers are looking to extend their franchise’s record winning streak to 15 when they face the Celtics on Thursday evening.

Los Angeles is as hot as a team can be right now. Vinny Del Negro and his team have won 14 straight games while increasing their season point differential to a league-best +9.7 PPG. Both the Clippers and the Celtics have covered in two of their last three games. Boston SG Leandro Barbosa is questionable for this game as he is dealing with personal issues.

Can the red-hot Clippers cover this big number?

The Celtics are coming off of a 93-76 blowout victory over the Nets on Christmas Day in which Boston controlled the game from the opening tip. PG Rajon Rondo failed to record double-digit assists in the game, but he did score 19 points and steal the ball three times while shutting down Nets PG Deron Williams. SF Paul Pierce was off his game, scoring only eight points, but he picked up the slack in the assists column for Rondo as he dished out 10 assists in the win. It’s also worth noting that Pierce scored a combined 75 points in the two games before Christmas. The Celtics will need to start rebounding the ball better if they want to start winning more consistently, as they are averaging only 38.6 RPG, which ranks last in the NBA in that category.

Not only have the Clippers won 14 games in a row, but they have been doing it in impressive fashion. Los Angeles has been blowing teams out and that is why they have the best point differential in the NBA. PG Chris Paul is playing unbelievably on both sides of the ball, averaging 16.0 PPG and 9.5 APG on 48% FG to go along with a league-leading 2.7 SPG. PF Blake Griffin has been shooting lights-out over the past five games, averaging 18.0 PPG during the stretch while shooting 57% FG and 77.3% FT. He is connecting on 54% FG and 63% FT on the season. The Clippers’ success is also due to some of the best bench play in the league. Jamal Crawford is the league’s best scorer off the bench, averaging 16.5 PPG in just 29.3 MPG. Los Angeles has incredible depth and that is without Grant Hill and Chauncey Billups, who are both out indefinitely.

NBA TNT doubleheader: Mavs at Thunder, Celtics at Clippers
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dallas Mavericks at Oklahoma City Thunder (-11, 208)

The Oklahoma City Thunder have lost back-to-back games for the first time this season and seek to get back on the winning track when they host the struggling Dallas Mavericks on Thursday. The Thunder fell to the Miami Heat on Christmas Day and no longer have the NBA’s best record after the Los Angeles Clippers won later Tuesday night. Dallas has lost three straight and six of seven after a season-worst 129-91 loss to San Antonio on Sunday.

Star forward Dirk Nowitzki played for the first time this season in the loss to the Spurs. Nowitzki missed the first 27 games of the campaign after October knee surgery and scored eight points off the bench. Oklahoma City won 12 consecutive contests before the two straight defeats. “I’m proud of how they compete and they never let up,” Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. “Never. I’ve never been disappointed in this team with how they compete.” The Thunder have won 10 straight home games since losing to the Memphis Grizzlies on Nov. 14.

              TV: 8 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE MAVERICKS (12-16, 13-15 ATS): Nowitzki played 20 minutes in his first game and the plan is to slowly increase his minutes. Dallas has adjusted to playing without him and Nowitzki is aware that an adjustment period is necessary. “It’s probably going to take me a week or two getting my legs and wind,” Nowitzki said. “And hopefully I can help a little more, but we need some work.” Guard O.J. Mayo is averaging a team-best 19.3 points but has slumped recently and also is dealing with the flu.

ABOUT THE THUNDER (21-6, 16-10-1 ATS): Forward Kevin Durant scored 33 points against Miami and Russell Westbrook tallied 21 to mark the 14th time the two standouts have scored 20 or more points in the same contest. Oklahoma City is 11-3 in those games. Reserve guard Kevin Martin returned from a one-game absence due to a quadriceps injury to score 15 points. He has a 17.9 career average in 18 games against Dallas. Durant is averaging 21.4 points in 17 regular-season contests against the Mavericks, well below his career mark of 26.4.

              TRENDS:

              * Over is 4-1 in the last five meetings in Oklahoma City.
              * Mavericks are 19-7-1 ATS in the last 27 meetings in Oklahoma City.
              * Road team is 36-15-2 ATS in the last 53 meetings.
              * Underdog is 20-5-1 ATS in the last 26 meetings.

              BUZZER BEATERS:

              1. Oklahoma City has won four of the last five regular-season meetings in addition to last season’s playoff sweep of the Mavericks.

              2. Thunder F Serge Ibaka had just one blocked shot against Miami. Oklahoma City is 12-3 when he rejects three or more shots.

              3. Mayo is just 9-of-33 from the field over the last three games while averaging only 8.3 points.

Boston Celtics at Los Angeles Clippers (-8.5, 190)

The Los Angeles Clippers attempt to extend their franchise-record winning streak to 15 games on Thursday when they host the Boston Celtics. Los Angeles surged a half-game ahead of the Oklahoma City Thunder for the league's best record with its 14th straight victory, a 112-100 home triumph over the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday. The Clippers have not lost since dropping a 105-98 decision to the New Orleans Hornets at home on Nov. 26.

Boston kicked off its four-game road trip Tuesday with a 93-76 win over the Brooklyn Nets. The victory halted the Celtics' five-game losing streak away from home. It also was the team's second in its last six contests overall. Boston concludes its trek with games at Golden State and Sacramento on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

              TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE CELTICS (14-13, 10-15-2 ATS): Forward Paul Pierce is poised to move past Elgin Baylor for 24th place on the all-time scoring list. With 23,144 career points, Pierce needs just five to surpass Baylor and is 34 away from overtaking Adrian Dantley for 23rd place. Forward Kevin Garnett is expected to play in his 1,283rd career game Thursday, which would give him sole possession of 15th place on the all-time list. He currently is tied with Charles Oakley. Garnett also will climb within three games of Sam Perkins for 14th place.

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (22-6, 18-10 ATS): Guard Jamal Crawford scored a team-high 22 points in Tuesday's victory. It marked the 12th time this season he has contributed 20 or more points off the bench. Forward Matt Barnes scored in double figures for the eighth straight game, pouring in 20 off the bench. Los Angeles is 16-0 when Barnes comes off the bench and reaches double digits. The Clippers scored a season-high 42 points in the second quarter against Denver. Their previous high for points in a quarter was 35.

              TRENDS:

              * Under is 5-1 in the last six meetings in Los Angeles.
              * Under is 9-3 in the last 12 meetings.
              * Celtics are 1-6 ATS in the last seven meetings.
              * Underdog is 7-0 ATS in the last seven meetings.

              BUZZER BEATERS:

              1. Boston has won three of the last four meetings between the teams.

              2. Clippers G Chris Paul leads the league with 76 steals and an average of 2.7 per game.

              3. Los Angeles has won 10 games during its streak by 12 points or more.
