Christmas NBA betting: What bettors need to know
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Celtics at Brooklyn Nets (-3.5, 187.5)

The last time the Brooklyn Nets and Boston Celtics met on Nov. 28, there were three ejections in Brooklyn's 95-83 victory in Boston. While there might not be any ejections or shoving incidents in Tuesday's Christmas Day rematch at the Barclays Center, neither team is feeling cheerful about its quality of play since the night Rajon Rondo shoved Kris Humphires in retaliation for a hard foul on Kevin Garnett in the second quarter.
The Nets beat Boston twice in November during an 11-4 start that saw Avery Johnson win Eastern Conference coach of the month. Since then they have had to deal with a foot injury to Brook Lopez and comments from Deron Williams and Joe Johnson about the offense. As a result of those things, Brooklyn has won just eight of 11, though it halted a three-game losing streak with Sunday's 95-92 home win over Philadelphia by getting 22 points from Johnson. Boston has not been much better and since going a season-high three games over .500 on Dec. 12, it has dropped four of five and wasted a 35-point night from Paul Pierce in Friday's 99-94 overtime loss to Milwaukee.

    TV: 12 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT THE CELTICS (13-13): A key aspect of Boston's mediocre start has been the differences in their performances at home and on the road. While Friday snapped a five-game home winning streak, Boston is opening a four-game trip on a five-game road losing streak that has seen them average 89.6 points per game. The Celtics are also opening the trip following two of Pierce's best showings of the season. He has scored 75 points on 26-of-39 shooting. Boston will be trying to snap its skid with a slightly shorthanded bench as backup center Chris Wilcox will be out three to four weeks with a sprained ligament in his right thumb and reserve guard Leandro Barbosa will not join the team until Wednesday due to personal reasons.

ABOUT THE NETS (14-12): The Nets spent Monday's practice downplaying any lingering feelings about the incident in Boston, citing the fact that it took place nearly a month ago. “I think for our guys, I just think the game is so far back,” Avery Johnson said. “They’re gonna be aware of it. I don’t think they’ll back down from anybody, but I think they just wanna play basketball. As we’ve seen in the past, our guys, they’re pretty physically and mentally tough.” Humphries, whom Boston's Jason Terry called 'soft" after the incident, might not even play. He has started just five games this month but Sunday was not included in the rotation for the first time and is questionable for Tuesday with an abdominal injury.

New York Knicks at Los Angeles Lakers (-3.5, 214.5)

Star power will be on full display as the Los Angeles Lakers entertain the New York Knicks in a Christmas Day duel. The Lakers are finally healthy and able to put their four superstars - Pau Gasol, Dwight Howard, Steve Nash and Kobe Bryant - on the court together. They'll face a surging Knicks club led by early-season MVP candidate Carmelo Anthony, who has his team near the top of the Eastern Conference standings despite having to do without injured All-Star forward Amar'e Stoudemire.

The Lakers' sensational foursome struggled at times in its grand reunion Saturday, but managed to pull out a 118-115 overtime win over Golden State thanks to a 34-point, 10-rebound showing from Bryant. A Christmas Day victory will move Los Angeles back to the .500 mark - an important milestone for a team many believed was a shoe-in for a conference finals berth. New York was considered far from a sure thing in the East, but became the first team in the conference to reach 20 wins with a 94-91 triumph over Minnesota on Sunday.

    TV: 3 p.m. ET, ABC

ABOUT THE KNICKS (20-7): New York may be rolling, but the players know there is room for improvement - particularly on defense, where the Knicks have had trouble matching their opponents' level of physicality. A loss to Chicago on Friday exposed New York in that regard, but the Knicks rebounded with a win over a physical Timberwolves team. "Both those teams do have guys that are very physical, and I think we haven't been at our best," said Knicks super-sub Steve Novak. "I feel like we haven't really played as well as we had defensively earlier in the season. But it's good to know that it's there; it's not like we lost it."

ABOUT THE LAKERS (13-14): Point guard Steve Nash made his return to the Los Angeles lineup Saturday after missing nearly two months with a broken bone in his leg. Head coach Mike D'Antoni wasn't shy about using his two-time NBA MVP, letting him rack up 41 minutes in the overtime victory. Nash said afterward he was surprised but satisfied with the steady diet of playing time. "To play 40 minutes after seven weeks was more than I could ask for," said Nash, who finished with 12 points and nine assists "I felt in a decent rhythm. I feel positive about it. I know it will be sore and painful but I'm used to that."

Oklahoma City Thunder at Miami Heat (-3, 204.5)

Fans will be treated to an NBA Finals rematch Tuesday - and it helps that both teams are playing great basketball. The Miami Heat host the Oklahoma City Thunder for the first time since clinching the NBA championship with a 121-106 victory just over six months earlier. Both teams have seen personnel changes but are playing as well as they did last season, with Miami holding a slim lead atop the Eastern Conference and the Thunder doing the same in the West.

Miami brings a four-game winning streak into the Christmas Day tilt, a run in which the Heat have been dominant on both sides of the ball. The club has averaged 105 points during the streak while allowing just 87 per contest. The Thunder are coming off a 99-93 defeat at the hands of the Minnesota Timberwolves that snapped their 12-game winning streak. Tuesday's game pits two of the league's early-season MVP candidates against one another, with LeBron James guiding the Heat against Kevin Durant and the Thunder.

    TV: 5:30 p.m. ET, ABC

ABOUT THE THUNDER (21-5): The biggest difference between this year's team and the one that fell to the Heat in five games last spring is the absence of sixth-man-turned-superstar James Harden. Those who forecast tougher times following his departure have been proven wrong so far, with the defending Western Conference champions ranked second in the NBA at 105.1 points per game - just three-tenths behind Harden's new team, the Houston Rockets. Thunder reserve Kevin Martin - acquired in the blockbuster deal - has made up for the absence of Harden's bench scoring, averaging 15.7 points per game in just 29 minutes.

ABOUT THE HEAT (18-6): Miami had few weaknesses last season, but that didn't prevent the team from adding pieces over the summer. The arrivals of Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis on cap-friendly deals were the two most notable moves, and they've paid immediate dividends. The duo combines to average nearly three 3-pointers per game, vaulting the Heat into top spot in long-range efficiency at 41.1 percent after finishing 10th a season ago. Their ability to spread the floor has made scoring even easier for the high-powered Heat, who are shooting a league-best 49.8 percent from the field.

Houston Rockets at Chicago Bulls (-4, 198)

The NBA's most prolific offense clashes with one of the league's more impressive defenses Tuesday as the Houston Rockets visit Chicago for an encounter with the Bulls. Led by star acquisition James Harden, Houston is filling the net at a rate of 105.4 points per game. That high-octane attack will be put to the test against a Bulls team allowing just 91 points per contest. Both teams come in on impressive runs, with the Bulls victorious in nine of 13 and the Rockets winners of three straight.

Houston looked to be in flux prior to the arrival of Harden, who joins forces with fellow acquisition Jeremy Lin to form one of the most impressive backcourts in the league. The Rockets' recent run has the club back above the .500 mark for the season. Chicago posted back-to-back victories over Eastern Conference powers Boston and New York before stumbling against the Atlanta Hawks over the weekend. Houston has won two straight in the head-to-head series after dropping the previous five.

    TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT THE ROCKETS (14-12): As impressive as Harden's scoring has been since coming over in a preseason trade with the Oklahoma City Thunder, his ability to facilitate has been just as remarkable. The shooting guard has looked like one of the league's best playmakers in each of the Rockets' last two games, dishing out seven assists in a 125-103 win over the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday and following it up with an eight-assist performance in a 121-96 victory over Memphis three nights later. Harden (5.4) and Lin (6.2) are one of only four sets of teammates averaging five or more assists.

ABOUT THE BULLS (15-11): Chicago's trademark defense has the team contending for top spot in the Central Division despite the absence of former league MVP Derrick Rose. Where they miss their superstar point guard is on the offensive end, where they haven't been able to make up for his scoring or playmaking. Chicago is averaging 3 1/2 fewer points than it did a season ago, and has managed an average of just 77.8 points in its last four defeats. That includes a 92-75 defeat in Atlanta on Saturday, a game that saw the Bulls score just 33 points in the second and third quarters combined.

Denver Nuggets at Los Angeles Clippers (-7, 201)

The torrid Los Angeles Clippers attempt to run their franchise-record winning streak to 14 games when they host the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday. Los Angeles stretched its streak to 13 with a convincing road victory over the Phoenix Suns on Sunday to move within a half-game of the Oklahoma City Thunder for the NBA’s top record. Denver has won four of its last five games and is playing its league-high 20th road contest.

Nuggets guard Ty Lawson left Saturday’s victory over the Charlotte Bobcats with a left Achilles’ tendon injury but expects to play against the Clippers. Denver needs Lawson’s speed and veteran Andre Miller’s savvy instincts to contest Clippers star Chris Paul. “It will be a tough game,” Miller said. “They’ve got a good win streak going. We have four games in five nights. Hopefully, we can start off on a good note.” Los Angeles has held eight straight opponents to less than 43 percent from the field to set a franchise mark. The Clippers haven’t lost since falling to the New Orleans Hornets on Nov. 26.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN, Altitude (Denver), Prime Ticket (Los Angeles)

ABOUT THE NUGGETS (15-13): Denver’s interior game has been superb and the Nuggets have recorded NBA season-highs for points in the paint in back-to-back games. Denver had 74 points in the paint during Thursday’s loss to the Portland Trail Blazers and surpassed that with 78 two nights later against Charlotte. A surprise standout against the Bobcats was Kosta Koufos, who scored a season-high 16 points on 8-of-10 shooting. It marked the first time Koufos has led the Nuggets in scoring in his 86 games with the franchise. “I just played within the system, continued to play hard every possession,” Koufos said. “When the ball comes to me, I just try to finish.”

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (21-6): Veteran guard Jamal Crawford has been a force off the bench and scored 22 points against the Suns to break out of a mini-slump that saw him score 10 or fewer points in four of the previous six games. He tallied a season-low five points on 2-of-12 shooting in Friday’s victory over the Sacramento Kings before bouncing back with an 8-of-12 shooting performance against Phoenix. “I didn’t do anything different,” said Crawford, one of the leading contenders for Sixth Man of the Year. “That’s the thing that’s humbling and weird about the NBA. You can do the exact same thing and shots go and sometimes they don’t.” Crawford is averaging 16.3 points.

The Nets haven’t been much better, but they have won two of their past five games. The matchup to watch in this one is the battle of the point guards. Deron Williams and Rajon Rondo will both need to set the tone for their teams early on Christmas Day.

Which NBA Atlantic Division squad will give its fans a Christmas Day victory? For the answer, connect to NBA Best Bets for all the Expert picks throughout the entire 2012-13 season. The experts have sizzled since Saturday with a collective 9-2 ATS mark. The experts are 63% ATS (19-11) since Dec. 19 and are 52% ATS (163-151-10) on Best Bets for the season. ******* Gary is 55.4% ATS (31-25-3) Best Bets for the year, while ******* Scott is at 54.4% ATS (37-31) Best Bets for the season and ******* Brian is at 51.3% ATS (40-38-3) after going 8-5 ATS (62%) since Dec. 14. For NBA Totals, Scott is 42-25 (63%) for the season.

The Celtics have lost four of their past five games and are now only a .500 basketball team. Over the past five games, PG Rajon Rondo has not been taking care of the basketball. He is averaging only 9.8 APG compared to his season average of 12.2 APG and has turned the ball over 4.6 times per game in that span. The Celtics are also going to need more out of PF Kevin Garnett. Garnett has averaged a mere 6.4 RPG in the past five games, and as the leading rebounder for Boston, he’ll need to improve in that area.

The Nets have gone through struggles of their own after a hot start to the season. After losing three of their past five games, they need to get things back on track. PG Deron Williams is starting to find his stroke as he is shooting 44.6% from the field over the past five games compared to 39.7% from the field on the season. SG Joe Johnson is also starting to come into his own as he’s turned in three performances with 20 or more points in Brooklyn’s past five games. The season turned when C Brook Lopez went down with an injury, so perhaps this team is now getting acclimated to his return to the lineup.

Knicks travel to L.A. on Christmas Day

        NEW YORK KNICKS (20-7)

        at LOS ANGELES LAKERS (13-14)

        Tip-off: Tuesday, 3:00 p.m. ET
Line: Los Angeles -3, Total: 212.5

The Knicks will get their second chance to beat their former coach, Mike D’Antoni, when they face the Lakers at Staples Center on Christmas Day.

New York is 7-3 in its past 10 games, while the Lakers are on a four-game winning streak. The last time these two teams played, the Knicks won 116-107 in a game that wasn’t close from the opening tip.

Can the Knicks win in Los Angeles on Tuesday afternoon?

The Knicks have won seven of their past 10 games, but have lost two of their past five contests. Some of New York's shooters have been struggling lately, but SF Carmelo Anthony has picked up the slack. The early season MVP candidate is averaging 31.0 PPG on 44.4% shooting from the field in the three games he’s played since spraining his ankle. Anthony is averaging 1.0 BPG and 2.0 SPG as well in those three games. SG J.R Smith has also been playing some of his best basketball of the season, averaging 19.4 PPG, 5.2 RPG and 3.2 APG over the past five games. He has been a huge spark off the bench for the Knicks and has really made up for the poor shooting of his teammates. PG Jason Kidd must find his shot again as he is just 4-of-16 from three-point land in his past three games.

The Lakers have won four straight games and recently got PG Steve Nash and PF Pau Gasol back from injury. Mike D’Antoni and SG Kobe Bryant were raving about Nash after the Lakers’ 118-115 victory over the Golden State Warriors. Kobe Bryant has been stellar this season and over the past five games has averaged 31.8 PPG, 7.4 RPG and 6.2 APG. Despite his 16-of-41 shooting performance from the field against the Warriors and his 9-for-29 FG against the Wizards, Kobe is still connecting on 42% FG over the past five games. Bryant is as tough of a cover as there is in this league and although this team has struggled, Kobe has competed and produced in nearly every game.

NBA Finalists clash Tuesday when OKC visits Miami

        OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER (21-5)

        at MIAMI HEAT (18-6)

        Tip-off: Tuesday, 5:30 p.m. ET
        Line: Miami -3, Total: 204.5

Miami will host the Oklahoma City on Christmas Day in a rematch of last year's NBA Finals.

The Heat and Thunder have both gotten off to great starts in this NBA season, but now they face off against each other. Last year, the Heat beat the Thunder in the Finals and they did so while dropping Game 1, but winning four straight to end it in Game 5. Thunder sixth man Kevin Martin will play in this game after missing the Thunder’s loss to the Timberwolves with a quadriceps injury.

Who will come out on top in this NBA Finals rematch?

Oklahoma City is now 21-5 to start the 2012-2013 season. SF Kevin Durant has stepped up his game in the increased role he was given when the Thunder traded James Harden right before the season began. Over the past five games, Durant is averaging 31.8 PPG, 3.8 APG and 8.0 RPG. Durant also turned in a 41-point performance against Atlanta on Dec. 19. He has been unstoppable, and a lot of that has to do with great point guard play from Russell Westbrook (8.8 APG), who is averaging 10.2 APG over the past five games. These numbers are way up from Westbrook’s career average of 6.9 APG. SG Kevin Martin has been very good for the Thunder as he is a deadly catch-and-shoot player, tied for sixth in the NBA at 46% 3-pt FG.

Many people have panicked about the start to the season for the Heat, but the reality is that they’re 18-6 and the top seed in the Eastern Conference early on. SF LeBron James is playing like an MVP yet again for Miami, averaging 25.4 PPG, 8.5 RPG and 6.8 APG. James is shooting an incredibly efficient 54.2% from the field, and by far a career high of 44.2% from three. PF Chris Bosh has been the Heat’s second option all season and he has performed well, averaging 18.0 PPG and 7.9 RPG to go along with 1.3 BPG on the season. SG Dwyane Wade has also come on strong for Miami lately, averaging 18.2 PPG, 5.6 APG and 4.4 RPG in only 28.4 MPG over the past five games.

        • Knicks Try To Rebound At Phoenix Off Christmas Day Loss

New York Knicks at Phoenix Suns
          NBA Betting Preview
          Date: 12/26/2012 at 9:00 p.m. (ET)
          Opening Lines: New York -3½, O/U 199
          Television: NBATV

New York Knicks: New York (20-8 straight-up, 15-13 against the spread) only trails Miami in the Eastern Conference but has shown some chinks in the armor lately at 2-3 SU in its last five. The team is also just 1-5 ATS in its last six. The latest setback was 100-94 as 4-point ‘dogs at the Lakers on Christmas Day despite getting 34 points from Carmelo Anthony. The Knicks have seen their scoring decrease over the last five games at 98 points per game with the "under" going 4-1. They are ranked sixth in the NBA for the season at 102.3 ppg. Point guard Raymond Felton has shot just 36.4 percent from the field (32-of-88) the last five games and is listed as questionable on the NBA injury report with an ongoing finger issue. Anthony has also been dealing with his own knee injury but listed as probable.

Phoenix Suns: The Suns (11-17 SU, 11-16-1 ATS) have lost two in a row (1-1 ATS) after winning their previous four (4-0 ATS). The latest was a 103-77 blowout home loss to the Clippers on Sunday. That went well "under" the 195½-point total, and the "under" is 6-1 in the team's last seven games. The Suns could be without Michael Beasley (10.5 ppg), who is questionable with an illness. However, this is a balanced offensive attack that ranks 12th in the NBA (97.3 ppg) with five other players all averaging double digits. New York and Phoenix met in the Big Apple back on Dec. 2 with Anthony scoring 34 for the Knicks in a 106-99 victory. The Suns did cover the spread as large 11½-point underdogs, and they are 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings between the teams.

            • Inside the Paint - Wednesday

              December 26, 2012

Holiday Hangover Wednesday’s pro basketball card is stacked with 13 games on the hardwood. Ten teams played on Christmas Day and seven of them will be forced to play two games in two nights. With that being said, let’s take a closer look at the clubs playing with no rest.

              Chicago at Indiana

The Bulls will be looking to forget not one but two blowout losses on Wednesday. Last night, Chicago was run out of its own gym by Houston, 120-97. After losing their first two games of the season on zero days rest, the Bulls have won four straight when facing back-to-back spots and two of those victories have come on the road. The total has gone 3-3.

The Pacers nipped the Bulls 80-76 as four-point road underdogs on Dec. 4. It was an ugly game to watch and total players should be aware that the ‘under’ has gone 7-1 in the last eight meetings. The oddsmakers have taken notice by offering up a 176-point total for this matchup. Considering the Bulls had their worst defensive performance on Christmas, you’d expect a better effort here. Offensively, Chicago could be in trouble with Luol Deng (foot) listed as ‘questionable.’

              Miami at Charlotte

As expected, Miami is laying serious wood in this spot and it’s hard to go against a team that has won and covered five straight, which included yesterday’s 103-97 home victory against Oklahoma City. You could play the letdown factor and fatigue should be considered as well. The Heat has only faced three back-to-back situations this season and they’ve won all three. However, the team is just 1-2 ATS and the wins came by a combined 11 points. Miami has won eight straight against Charlotte but has only covered four of those games. When installed as a double-digit favorite, which they are tonight, the Heat has gone 2-3 ATS.

In case you forgot over the holiday break, the Bobcats have lost 15 consecutive games and they’re only 4-11 ATS during this losing skid. If you expect Charlotte to snap out of it, you might want to look ahead, especially when you see its schedule (Nets, Cavs, Pistons, etc…). The Heat could be without Chris Bosh (eye) for tonight and the ‘Cats will miss center B.J. Mullens (ankle) and possibly Gerald Henderson (shin) and Ben Gordon (knee). If you don’t follow Charlotte, that’s a lot of firepower for them offensively.

              Brooklyn at Milwaukee

Brooklyn will be looking to bounce back after it was humbled 93-76 by Boston as a 2 ½-point home favorite on Christmas. The Nets scored 24 points in the first quarter but were stifled to just 53 points in the final 36 minutes. After starting the season with an 11-4 record in November, the Nets have gone 3-9 in December and for our purposes, they’re a pathetic 2-10 versus the number. The Nets have struggled on zero days rest this season, posting a 2-4 record both SU and ATS. Unfortunately for Brooklyn, it has played five of these games on the road. The ‘under’ has gone 5-1 and it should be 6-0 if it wasn’t for some late hoops in a mid-November loss to Golden State (93-102), which barely went ‘over’ the closing number of 194 ½.

Normally, Milwaukee has been a good team to back at home but the club is only 7-6 SU and 5-8 ATS this season. The total is hovering around 187 and both Brooklyn (17-9) and Milwaukee (15-10) have been ‘under’ teams. We do have a lot of new faces for both clubs but it’s really hard to ignore the fact that the Bucks have won and covered 12 straight against the Nets. Most books opened Milwaukee as a 2 ½-point home favorite and it’s already climbed up to 3 at most shops.

              Houston at Minnesota

The Rockets proved once again that they’re a “Make or Miss” team on Christmas and fortunately for them, they made plenty of buckets. Houston dismantled Chicago 120-97 and the final score wasn’t that close. In their 15 wins this season, the team has scored 100 points or more in 12 of them. If you bet the Rockets, you better hope they shoot the ball well. Similar to Brooklyn, the Rockets have struggled in back-to-back contests. The Rockets are 2-4 both SU and ATS, but they did notch an impressive 109-96 win at New York when facing the situation the last time out. Even though Houston likes to push the pace, the ‘under’ has connected at a 67% (4-2) mark on zero days rest.

In last year’s lockout-shortened season and Minnesota won and covered three of the four encounters. The ‘over’ went 3-1 during this span. The Timberwolves aren’t an easy out at home. After starting 3-3 at Target Center, the club has won five straight (4-1) on their court.

              New York at Phoenix

The Knicks had a chance to knock off the Lakers yesterday but their offense went missing in the fourth quarter (16 points) which led to their 100-94 road loss. New York heads to the desert and this particular team has been tough to figure out on zero days rest. They’re 3-3 both SU and ATS, which is pretty good considering five of those games were on the road. Despite the fatigue factor, New York has played up-tempo and is averaging 104.8 PPG. Those numbers have helped the ‘over’ go 5-1 in the six games.

New York held off Phoenix 106-99 on Dec. 2 in an early afternoon affair but failed to cover as an 11 ½-point favorite. The ‘over’ barely cashed over the closing number of 200. The Suns are catching points here and they’ve produced a 3-4 record both SU and ATS as home ‘dogs.

              L.A. Lakers at Denver

Los Angeles earned the solid home win (100-94) over the Knicks on Christmas while the Nuggets were beat by the Clippers (100-112) on the same court a few hours later. This will be the fifth back-to-back spot of the season for the Lakers and none of the games have been played at Staples Center. Los Angeles has been hit or miss in these situations, going 2-2 both SU and ATS, with all four of the outcomes being decided by double digits. The total has gone 2-2.

Just like the Lakers, Denver hasn’t played at home on zero days rest, this being its first of the season. The Nuggets have gone 2-4 in back-to-back spots but that record is misleading. Denver is 5-1 ATS over this span and three of the losses have been by three points or less. Coincidentally, the worst loss came to the Lakers (103-122) when they met on Nov. 30 from Staples Center. Total players have watched the ‘over’ go 5-1 for Denver on zero days rest. The Lakers beat the Nuggets 4-3 in the first round of last year’s playoffs. Los Angeles was 1-2 both SU and ATS in the two games played in Colorado, the losses both coming by double digits.

Denver is favored for this matchup and it should be. The Nuggets are 8-1 SU and 7-2 ATS from the Pepsi Center and the lone loss came to the Miami Heat, arguably the best team in the league. Even though the Lakers have won five straight, the road record (5-8) isn’t something to forget so quickly.

              • Slumping Knicks head to Phoenix Wednesday

                NEW YORK KNICKS (20-8)

                at PHOENIX SUNS (11-17)

                Tip-off: Wednesday, 9:05 p.m. ET
Line: New York -3, Total: 199

The Knicks head to Phoenix on Wednesday night trying to get back to their dominant form from the beginning of this season.

New York isn't playing as well as they did to start the season and is now coming off three losses (1-4 ATS) in the past five games. Luckily the Knicks have a chance to get back on track in Phoenix against a Suns team that has lost two straight and nine of 13. When these teams met earlier in the season, Phoenix covered the spread, but New York won 106-99.

Can the Knicks bounce-back from their Christmas Day loss and win one night later? For the answer, connect to NBA Best Bets for all the Expert picks throughout the entire 2012-13 season. The experts have sizzled since Saturday with a collective 12-4 ATS (75%) mark, including a perfect 6-0 ATS from ******* Dave. The experts are 63% ATS (22-13) since Dec. 19 and are 52% ATS (166-153-10) on Best Bets for the season. ******* Gary is 54.4% ATS (31-26-3) Best Bets for the year, while ******* Scott is at 54% ATS (37-32) Best Bets for the season and ******* Brian is at 52% ATS (41-38-3) after going 9-5 ATS (64%) since Dec. 14. For NBA Totals, Scott is 42-27 (61%) for the season.

The Knicks lost to the Lakers on Christmas Day, but there’s still no reason for the team to panic. SF Carmelo Anthony is on top of his game and the rest of the team is starting to get healthy. Anthony is averaging 28.5 PPG on the season (2nd in NBA) and 31.8 PPG in the four games he’s played since spraining his ankle. New York got back a healthy C Marcus Camby this week, which is great news considering its other backup big man, Rasheed Wallace, suffered a stress fracture in his left foot. SG J.R. Smith is also performing at a very high level for New York, scoring 25 points on 10-of-23 shooting against the Lakers and averaging 21.2 PPG over the past five games.

The Suns seemed like they were turning around their season with a four-game winning streak just a week ago, but now they have lost two straight. A bright spot for Phoenix is that C Marcin Gortat is starting to look like the Gortat of last season. He is averaging 12.0 PPG, 11.4 RPG and 2.4 BPG over the past five games while shooting 52% from the field. On the other hand, Goran Dragic must improve his play if the Suns are going to break their losing streak. Over the past two games, Dragic is shooting just 6-of-21 from the field, a poor percentage compared to his 45% field goal shooting on the season. SF Michael Beasley is questionable for Wednesday's game due to an illness.

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NBA game of the day: Lakers at Nuggets
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Lakers at Denver Nuggets (7, 204.5)

The Los Angeles Lakers have achieved the first of their many goals for the remainder of the season. Next up is a victory over the host Denver Nuggets on Wednesday. Los Angeles made a triumphant return to the .500 mark on Christmas Day, getting 34 points from Kobe Bryant and 11 assists from Steve Nash in a come-from-behind win over the New York Knicks. The Lakers have won five straight but will be in tough to extend that run against a Nuggets team sporting an 8-1 home record.

Denver is in the midst of four games in five days, and it kicked off the grueling stretch with a 112-100 loss to the red-hot Los Angeles Clippers. The Nuggets were done in by a 42-point second quarter as they fell for just the second time in the last six games. Considered one of the early-season contenders for a top-four seed in the Western Conference, Denver has lacked the consistency of front-runners Oklahoma City, San Antonio and Memphis and are struggling on the defensive end.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, Time Warner SportsNet (Los Angeles), Altitude (Denver)

ABOUT THE LAKERS (14-14): Much has been made about the struggles of the Lakers' offense despite the addition of two star free agents in Nash and Dwight Howard and a new head coach in Mike D'Antoni. Yet, while it remains to be seen how the Lakers' loaded lineup will jell on the offensive end, it has shown flashes of stardom on defense. Los Angeles limited the Carmelo Anthony-led Knicks to just 14 fourth-quarter points, allowing Bryant and Nash to pull out the victory. With three defensive stalwarts on the roster in Bryant, Howard and Metta World Peace, Los Angeles is a tough team for most opposing scorers to face.

ABOUT THE NUGGETS (15-14): Teams have figured out that one of the best ways to handle the Denver defense is to fire away from beyond the arc. The Nuggets are fifth-worst in the NBA in 3-point shooting percentage against, and the Clippers exploited that weakness by connecting on 11 of 25 attempts in their Christmas Day victory. Denver continues to roll along offensively despite Danilo Gallinari's recent struggles. The Italian forward is mired in a horrible slump, having made just six of his last 31 shot attempts - highlighted by a 1-for-10 clunker against the Clippers, his second such effort in three games.

                        TRENDS:

                        * Lakers are 4-1 ATS in their last five games following a win.
                        * Nuggets are 5-1 ATS in their last six home games.
                        * Over is 7-1 in Lakers’ last eight vs. NBA Northwest foes.
                        * Over is 4-0 in Nuggets’ last four vs. NBA Pacific opposition.

                        BUZZER BEATERS:

                        1. The Lakers have dominated the head-to-head series of late, eliminating Denver from the 2012 playoffs and cruising to a 122-103 victory in their first meeting this season.

                        2. Denver is 3-12 when allowing 100 or more points.

                        3. Bryant averages 24.8 points in 55 career regular-season games against the Nuggets.

Dallas Mavericks: Dallas (12-16 straight-up, 13-15 against the spread) is well-rested after being off since Sunday. That was a 129-91 blowout loss at San Antonio despite Dirk Nowitzki (knee) playing for the first time this season. He scored eight points in 20 minutes off the bench. The Mavs have a three-game losing streak though and have lost five in a row on the road (2-3 ATS). Note leading scorer O.J. Mayo (19.3 points per game) has the flu, but he is listed as probable on the NBA injury report.

Oklahoma City Thunder: The Thunder (21-6 SU, 16-10-1 ATS) have their first two-game losing streak of the season after a 103-97 setback at Miami on Christmas. They now return home, where they have won 10 straight, going 7-3 ATS. This is the first meeting between the teams this season. Oklahoma City has beaten Dallas six straight (3-3 ATS). The road team is also 6-0 ATS in the last six matchups.

Boston Celtics at Los Angeles Clippers
                                NBA Betting Preview
                                Date: 12/27/2012 at 10:30 p.m. (ET)
                                Opening Lines: LA -9, O/U 189

Boston Celtics: The Celtics (14-13 SU, 10-15-2 ATS) started out their four-game road trip with a nice 93-76 win as 2½-point ‘dogs at Brooklyn on X-Mas. They were 0-5 SU and ATS in their previous five away. Boston has a new starting lineup with Jason Collins at center and Kevin Garnett back at power forward, where he is more comfortable. It also makes the bench more potent with Jeff Green, Brandon Bass and Jared Sullinger all available.

Los Angeles Clippers: The Clippers (22-6 SU, 18-10 ATS) ran their franchise-record winning streak to an amazing 14 games (10-4 ATS) with an easy 112-100 home win over Denver on Christmas. That game went "over" the 204½-point total after the team had allowed just 83.3 points per game in the previous eight with the "under" going 7-1. Boston won the last meeting between the teams 94-85 last March as 5½-point road ‘dogs. The Clips were 6-0 ATS in the previous six encounters.
