                    Opening Lines: -15½, O/U 135½
                    Television: ESPN2

Richmond Spiders: The Spiders (9-2 straight-up, 2-6 against the spread) head to Lawrence in search of their sixth consecutive win and third straight on the road. Richmond's offense has been finding the net with regularity during the five-game winning streak, sinking at least 50 percent of field-goal attempts in four of the victories. The Spiders are led by Derrick Williams, who is scoring 14.8 points and hauling down 7.2 rebounds per game. Darien Brothers is also averaging 14.8 ppg and has converted 28-of-54 shots from 3-point range.

Kansas Jayhawks: Off consecutive double-digit covers, the Jayhawks (8-1 SU, 4-5 ATS) bring a seven-game winning streak into Tuesday's contest and are a perfect 5-0 at Allen Fieldhouse. Kansas smoked Belmont on Saturday, 89-60, to easily beat the 12-point line, and it was the third consecutive game the team shot 50 percent or better from the field. Ben McLemore leads KU with 16.1 ppg while also grabbing 5.6 rpg. Jeff Withey, the nation's leading shot blocker (5.6 per game), is also contributing 13.8 ppg while topping the Jayhawks with 7.6 rpg.

                    College Basketball Betting Preview
                    Date: 12/18/2012 at 9:00 p.m. (ET)
                    Opening Lines: NC State -7 O/U 141
                    Television: ESPN2

Stanford Cardinal: A long trip east marks the first true road test for the Cardinal (7-3 SU, 5-4 ATS), who shook off some rust last Saturday with a 75-52 win over UC-Davis. A 13-day layoff showed with the team sinking just 37.3 percent from the field, but Dwight Powell's team-high 20 points helped Stanford backers collect on a 19-point spread. Powell leads the Cardinal, averaging 14.8 ppg, and the team ranks 35th in the country, converting better than 75 percent of free-throw attempts.

NC State Wolfpack: Mark Gottfried and the Wolfpack (7-2 SU, 4-2-1 ATS) continue a six-game homestand with this tilt vs. Stanford. North Carolina State returned to the floor Saturday following a week off with an 84-62 decision vs. Norfolk State, and the 'Pack continued its Division-I-best field-goal percentage mark (52.7 percent) by sinking 31-of-54 attempts. Richard Howell had a huge game on the glass with 19 boards to go with his 12 points, and freshman TJ Warren tallied 21 points off the bench by connecting on nine of his 11 shots from the field.

Richmond will get its first major test against a ranked opponent as No. 9 Kansas hosts them at Allen Fieldhouse on Tuesday night.

Bill Self’s Jayhawks have yet to be challenged since their early season loss in the Champions Classic to Michigan State, winning seven straight games, six by more than a dozen points. They feature one of the nation’s top freshmen in Ben McLemore (16.1 PPG), but the Spiders own a capable defense that has held six of their nine opponents to 60 points or less on the season. Containing the Jayhawks at home is always difficult however, as Kansas looks to extend the nation’s second longest home winning streak (27 games) in this contest.

Can Richmond keep the final margin relatively close on Tuesday? For the answer, connect to College Basketball Best Bets for all the Expert picks throughout the entire 2012-13 season. The ******* experts have been sizzling in the past four days, going a collective 21-7 ATS (75%) from Friday through Monday. ******* Dave is 8-1 ATS and ******* Scott is 6-1 ATS over this stretch. The experts now have a collective 53.4% ATS mark (135-118-6) in college basketball Best Bets for the season, led by ******* Gary, who is 57.4% ATS (27-20) for the season, while Dave is at 56% ATS (50-40-2) on the year. ******* Brian's 4-1 ATS run put him at 51% ATS (30-29-2) for the season.

The Spiders attack is led by two scorers who average 14.8 PPG in Darien Brothers and Derrick Williams. Brothers (1.2 SPG) has shot phenomenally to start the year at 50% FG and an even better 52% clip from long range, hitting 2.5 treys per game. Williams, a post player, leads the team with 7.2 RPG and has also been efficient from the field, making 60% of his shots. The tiny 5-foot-8 Kendall Anthony (13.9 PPG) is also an effective scorer, hitting 1.7 threes per game while Cedric Lindsay runs the offense with 10.7 PPG and 4.4 APG while only turning it over 1.6 times per contest. Senior forward Greg Robbins (7.0 PPG, 3.5 RPG) is the other guy to watch out for on this Spiders squad—even though his numbers don’t pop off the page. He can shoot when called upon and is perfectly capable of guarding the perimeter, averaging 1.2 SPG. Richmond averages 8.8 SPG on the season.

McLemore is the early favorite for national freshman of the year honors and is only getting better with 20.7 PPG in his past three contests. But the rock of this Kansas squad is its true center Jeff Withey (13.8 PPG, 7.6 RPG) who has developed into more of a scorer this season, even though he is typically known for his defensive prowess. And he is the premier post defender in the nation with a staggering 5.6 BPG. Travis Releford (13.2 PPG) has been a key presence as the team’s third and final double-digit scorer while Elijah Johnson (9.8 PPG, 43.8% FG) has struggled shooting the ball, but has succeeded passing the rock with 5.1 APG. Senior forward Kevin Young has also been a key veteran presence on the squad, putting up 6.5 PPG and 6.4 RPG in just 18.3 MPG.

No. 25 NC State hosts Stanford on Tuesday

                        STANFORD CARDINAL (7-3)

at NORTH CAROLINA STATE WOLFPACK (7-2)

                        PNC Arena – Raleigh, NC
                        Tip-off: Tuesday, 9:00 p.m. ET

Stanford will be tested flying across the country to take on a talented, but underperforming, No. 25 NC State squad in Raleigh on Tuesday night.

The Wolfpack’s problem has not been the offense, which is shooting 52.7% from the field, the best rate in the nation. Freshman TJ Warren has led that effort with an incredible 69.1% FG, including 64% from deep, the best rate of any freshman in the nation. The Cardinal, on the other hand, have been terrible from the field (39.8% FG) with key players such as Chasson Randle (35.8% FG, 21.6% 3-pt FG) struggling to make buckets.

Can the Wolfpack win convincingly on Tuesday night?

Six-foot-10 PF Dwight Powell (14.8 PPG, 6.9 RPG) is Stanford’s top scorer, though he is a better shooter than he is a rebounder, where he will have to step up against C.J. Leslie and Richard Howell who combined for 17.3 RPG for NC State. Powell has drastically improved in his junior season however, making 56.3% of his field goals, up more than 10% from last season. Josh Huestis (8.5 PPG, 8.2 RPG) joins him in the post and he is a strong rebounder despite being just 6-foot-7. Chasson Randle (14.4 PPG) is truly the X-factor of this team, putting points on the board despite his inefficiency from the field. He is coming off a 4-of-13 shooting performance against UC Davis, and things won’t get easier for him against this athletic NC State squad.

Warren has been the biggest surprise for the Wolfpack, but the team is also led by three seniors in Howell, Leslie and Lorenzo Brown. Howell (14.1 PPG, 9.6 RPG) is averaging nearly a double-double, while Leslie (12.9 PPG, 7.7 RPG) has also been good offensively, despite his 3.0 TOPG. He's averaging 15.2 PPG and 9.0 RPG over his past five games. Brown (11.7 PPG, 6.0 APG) is a strong, pass-first point guard but has also struggled with sloppy ball handling with 3.8 TOPG. Scott Wood (9.3 PPG) adds a sharp-shooting presence from the perimeter. Even though he’s shooting just 39.7% from the field this season, he’s hitting 40.4% of his shots from deep, averaging 2.1 threes per game. And as Rodney Purvis (9.8 PPG on 44% FG) continues to improve—he’s coming off back-to-back double-digit scoring performances—this team should only get better throughout the season.

                          Games to Watch

                          December 17, 2012

As the men's college basketball season closes-out the final two weeks of non-conference play there will be a major shake-up of the AP's and Coaches top five after No. 1 Indiana and No. 5 Florida lost for the first time this past Saturday. That leaves Duke, Michigan, Syracuse and Arizona as a few of the major unbeaten teams in the nation. All the top college basketball teams continue to jockey for position heading into the New Year in preparation for conference play which will really begin to heat things up.

The following is a brief look at the top matchups for each day this week along with a few facts and figures to help handicap the games.

Tuesday, Dec. 18 - Richmond vs. No. 9 Kansas

The Spiders are off to a strong 9-2 SU start but they are just 2-6 ATS. They ran their current winning streak to five games with a 76-57 rout of Stetson last Saturday in a game with no posted line. Richmond has had little problem putting the ball in the hoop this season with an average of 73.5 points a game but it has struggled under the boards with just 31.8 rebounds.

Kansas should continue to move up in the polls after pasting Belmont this past Saturday 89-60 as a 12-point home favorite. It was the Jayhawks seventh-straight win and they are now 8-1 SU and 4-5 ATS. The total has gone OVER in four of six games with a posted line. Ben McLemore, Jeff Withey and Travis Releford are all averaging better than 13 points while combining for 16.6 rebounds a game.

Wednesday, Dec. 19 - Cornell vs. No. 2 Duke

The Big Red out of the Ivy League kick-offs a busy week with a Monday matchup against Vanderbilt on the road before facing the Blue Devils on Wednesday in Durham. They are 4-5 SU on the year and 3-4 ATS. Cornell is averaging just 64.9 points a game while shooting just over 40 percent from the field.

Duke should move up to the top spot in the nation at 9-0 SU as a result of the Hoosiers loss on Saturday. The Blue Devils remained perfect on the year after beating Temple 90-67 on Dec. 8. They covered as 7 ½-point favorites to go 6-3 ATS. Mason Plumlee and Seth Curry have combined for 35.5 points a game to help pace Duke to an average of 80 points a game.

Thursday, Dec. 20 - Eastern Michigan vs. No. 3 Michigan

Eastern Michigan has lost two of its last three games to fall to 6-3 SU on the season. The latest setback was a 74-48 loss to Illinois-Chicago this past Saturday as a nine-point road underdog. The Eagles are now 3-3 ATS. They rank near the bottom of Division I in both scoring (57.2 points) and team shooting (38.7 percent).

Michigan is another team that should move up in the polls after running over West Virginia 81-66 on Saturday as a 10.5-point favorite. The Wolverines improved to 11-0 SU and 6-3 ATS. The total has gone OVER in six of the nine games with a posted line. With basketball pedigree such as Tim Hardaway Jr. and Glen Robinson III on the roster, Michigan is averaging 78.2 points a game while shooting an impressive 51.1 percent from the field.

Friday, Dec. 21 - Florida Atlantic vs. No. 1 Indiana

The Owls will host Stetson on Wednesday before going on the road to Indiana this Friday. Playing out of the Sun Belt, they are an even 5-5 SU (1-4 ATS) this season overall and 1-1 SU in conference play. Florida Atlantic has really struggled shooting the ball this season with a 38.8 shooting percentage that is ranked 314th in the nation.

Indiana will look to bounce back after Saturday's shocking 88-86 overtime loss to Butler as a 10.5-point favorite. It will play Mount St. Mary's at home on Wednesday before hosting the Owls on Friday night. The loss dropped the Hoosiers to 9-1 SU and 6-2 ATS. The total has gone OVER in three of their last four games. Cody Zeller continues to lead the team in both scoring (15.7 points) and rebounds (8.5) a game.

Saturday, Dec. 22 - No. 10 Illinois vs. No. 12 Missouri

Illinois moved to a perfect 12-0 SU with a 66-53 victory over Eastern Kentucky this past Sunday but could not cover as a 14 ½ -point home favorite. It is now 4-4 ATS and the total has gone OVER in four of six games with posted lines. The Fighting Illini are averaging 76.9 points behind Brandon Paul's 18.8 points a game.

Missouri will host South Carolina State this Monday before welcoming Illinois to the Scottrade Center on Saturday night. The Tigers improved to 8-1 SU and 3-4 ATS with a 68-38 romp over Tennessee State on Dec. 8 as 14 ½-point home favorites. They are averaging 75.1 points and ranked second in the nation in rebounds with 45.9 a game.

                            Under the Radar

                            December 17, 2012

If you're been following along, you know my affinity for the little guys. And I am not even just talking the mid-majors, but even the lower depths of Division I college hoops. The teams no one pays much mind. It is sad, too, as they play just as good a brand of basketball as the big guys. This past weekend I took my two sons to check out last season's Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champion Norfolk State, as they took on big fish N.C. State. While the Spartans never really had much of a chance heading into the second half, it was cool seeing a team in person which made so much history in the NCAA Tournament last season. Remember, they're one of just a handful of 15-seeds to upend a 2-seed in the big dance.

A few of the teams we've mentioned here have done pretty well lately. Appalachian State (2-7 SU, 6-0 ATS) won outright for just the second time this season Sunday at Missouri-Kansas City. More importantly, they covered a big number, and are now a whopping 6-0 ATS. Remember the Mountaineers when they head down to Columbia to battle South Carolina in their next game. Illinois-Chicago (9-1 SU, 8-1 ATS) also kept it rolling with a blowout win over visiting Eastern Michigan, keeping their impressive streak of making money alive. Lastly, the Summit League's IUPUI Jaguars (4-9 SU, 0-9 ATS) were drilled over the weekend by visiting Indiana State, and have now failed to cover in 10 straight games dating back to last season.

Creighton (10-1 SU, 8-1 ATS): The Blue Jays are certainly not a surprise, as far as their ranking and success in the Missouri Valley Conference. They have won 10 of their first 11 games outright. What might come as a surprise is their success against the spread, as they have covered eight of their nine games this season, including each of their past four overall. The only time Creighton failed to cover was a shocking 13-point loss in Omaha against visiting Boise State (7-2 SU, 5-3 ATS), which is no embarrassment considering how well the Broncos have been playing. The 13th-ranked Blue Jays have only one game in the upcoming scoring period, but they'll be heavily favored and are worth a look at home in a game they should win handily.

                            This week: Tulsa, Wednesday

Drexel (3-7 SU, 1-8 ATS): The Dragons have endeared themselves to bettors over the past couple of years by serving as that underrated, sleeper team. However, this season they have simply been asleep, failing to cover in eight of their nine games against the number. If you need good news, the over has come through in each of their two games which have had a total. The Dragons have been a bad team, not even coming close in three of their past four games. They did win outright Dec. 8 at Princeton, covering a six-point number. But that performance is an anomaly, and the Tigers do not play particularly well when playing from behind anyway. This week, Drexel will face a very difficult test at home, and one they are not likely to come close to passing.

                            This week: Davidson, Saturday

Marshall (6-5 SU, 0-7-1 ATS): While the Thundering Herd has been a fairly competitive bunch this season, when it comes to covering, they are a complete disaster. Straight up at home, the Herd is 5-0, making Huntington a difficult place to come in and play. However, visitors have kept it close, going 2-0-1 ATS. For whatever reason, the lines have been pumped up at home for the Herd, and Marshall hasn't even come close to cover in the past two home games. This week they have a home game against Savannah State, and the Herd should be heavily favored. Then, the Herd hits the road for a game at Rupp Arena in Lexington. That one could turn very ugly.

This week: Savannah State, Wednesday; at Kentucky, Saturday

Massachusetts (5-3 SU, 1-7 ATS): Like Marshall above, the Minutemen are not a horrible team, they just never cover. This past weekend we made some money picking against UMass, as visiting Elon (6-4 SU, 4-2 ATS) took their to overtime and nearly won outright. (The Elon team has been a good play, too, by the way. Remember them.) Anyway, UMass will take on an Ohio University (7-3 SU, 5-2 ATS) that had success in last season's NCAA Tournament, and has carried that momentum into the early portion of this season. However, playing on the road in Amherst, you might be able to get a very good number. Ohio is covering, UMass is not. Remember that. The Minutemen are 0-3 ATS at home so far.

This week: Ohio, Wednesday; East Carolina, Saturday

St. Peter's (4-5 SU, 4-0-1 ATS): Anyone who has followed me knows that I enjoy betting the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) rather frequently. Canisius (6-2 SU, 4-1 ATS), Niagara (5-6 SU, 2-5 ATS) and Siena (2-9 SU, 1-6 ATS) are teams to play particularly close mind to. Add in the Peacocks of St. Peter's, too. A few years ago they were betting gold, going 15-6-1 ATS back during the 2008-09 season despite an 11-19 SU record. Sometimes, a team doesn't necessarily have to be 'good' overall to be a 'good' bet. For whatever reason, St. Peter's just doesn't get respect from Vegas. In 2010-11, St. Peter's was 20-14 SU, and a whopping 20-8 ATS. Last season, it went the other way, as they were 5-26 overall, and 9-17 ATS. Anyway, what I am saying is there has been money to be made off the Peacocks over the years. This season, and this week, is no different.

This week: LIU-Brooklyn, Wednesday; Loyola-Chicago, Saturday
