Giants-Jets battle Saturday at MetLife Stadium
NEW YORK GIANTS (0-1)
at NEW YORK JETS (0-1)
NFL Preseason Game
Kickoff: Saturday, 7:00 p.m. EDT
Line: Jets -1, Total: 36½
After scoring just six points in their preseason opener last week, the Jets will try to get their offense in gear against the Giants on Saturday night.
The Jets had a horrible offensive showing in their 17-6 loss at Cincinnati eight days ago, especially their passing game which threw for a pathetic 57 yards on 20 attempts. The Giants defense was to blame in a 32-31 defeat at Jacksonville on that same night. That high-scoring affair doesn’t bode well for Saturday’s contest, considering the Giants are 2-10 ATS since 1993 after playing a preseason game where at least 50 points were scored. These two New York teams meet every year in the preseason, but the results are usually the same. Since 1996, the Jets have won 12 of the 16 matchups, going 12-3-1 ATS. With the Jets planning on having their first-team offense play the entire first half, expect this trend to continue with the JETS winning again on Saturday.
This two-star FoxSheets trend also expects the Jets to come out on top:
N.Y. GIANTS are 4-16 ATS (20.0%, -13.6 Units) in preseason games played on turf since 1993. The average score was N.Y. GIANTS 18.1, OPPONENT 22.2 - (Rating = 2*).
The Giants have several key players that will be on the sidelines for this Big Apple rivalry, including WR Hakeem Nicks (foot), TE Travis Beckum (knee), DT Chris Canty (knee), LB Michael Boley (hamstring) and CB Terrell Thomas (knee). Starting QB Eli Manning will likely play the first quarter of action again like last week against the Jaguars when he finished 4-of-8 for 60 yards. Second-string QB David Carr will likely see the most snaps again, especially coming off a strong performance in Jacksonville, going 6-of-10 for 48 yards and two touchdowns. The No. 3 signal caller is Ryan Perrilloux who completed 6-of-7 throws for 59 yards and 1 TD. Rookie RB David Wilson will also have a prominent role in the offense, coming off a team-high 43 rushing yards on just seven carries (6.0 YPC) against the Jags. D.J. Ware also rushed the ball effectively with five carries for 30 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, the Giants know they’ll have to do a much better job stopping the run than they did last week when they allowed 156 yards on 31 carries (5.0 YPC) and 2 TD.
The Jets can certainly run the football, and expect to feature some Wildcat formations with new QB Tim Tebow. Last Friday, the Jets rushed for a solid 116 yards on 27 carries (4.3 YPC) led by Tebow’s 34 yards on just four carries. Tebow and starting QB Mark Sanchez did not throw the football well though, combining to go 8-for-14 for just 48 yards (3.4 YPA), 0 TD and one bad interception by Tebow. Third-stringer Greg McElroy completed 4-of-6 throws for 49 yards (8.2 YPA), but took three sacks. Like the Giants, the Jets also have their fair share of injuries, most notably WRs Santonio Holmes (bruised ribs), Jeremy Kerley (strained hamstring) and Chaz Schilens (sprained ankle), as well as starting NT Sione Pouha (head laceration) and S Eric Smith (sprained knee).
