Giants-Jets battle Saturday at MetLife Stadium

    NEW YORK GIANTS (0-1)

    at NEW YORK JETS (0-1)

    NFL Preseason Game
    Kickoff: Saturday, 7:00 p.m. EDT
    Line: Jets -1, Total: 36½

After scoring just six points in their preseason opener last week, the Jets will try to get their offense in gear against the Giants on Saturday night.

The Jets had a horrible offensive showing in their 17-6 loss at Cincinnati eight days ago, especially their passing game which threw for a pathetic 57 yards on 20 attempts. The Giants defense was to blame in a 32-31 defeat at Jacksonville on that same night. That high-scoring affair doesn’t bode well for Saturday’s contest, considering the Giants are 2-10 ATS since 1993 after playing a preseason game where at least 50 points were scored. These two New York teams meet every year in the preseason, but the results are usually the same. Since 1996, the Jets have won 12 of the 16 matchups, going 12-3-1 ATS. With the Jets planning on having their first-team offense play the entire first half, expect this trend to continue with the JETS winning again on Saturday.

This two-star FoxSheets trend also expects the Jets to come out on top:

N.Y. GIANTS are 4-16 ATS (20.0%, -13.6 Units) in preseason games played on turf since 1993. The average score was N.Y. GIANTS 18.1, OPPONENT 22.2 - (Rating = 2*).

The Giants have several key players that will be on the sidelines for this Big Apple rivalry, including WR Hakeem Nicks (foot), TE Travis Beckum (knee), DT Chris Canty (knee), LB Michael Boley (hamstring) and CB Terrell Thomas (knee). Starting QB Eli Manning will likely play the first quarter of action again like last week against the Jaguars when he finished 4-of-8 for 60 yards. Second-string QB David Carr will likely see the most snaps again, especially coming off a strong performance in Jacksonville, going 6-of-10 for 48 yards and two touchdowns. The No. 3 signal caller is Ryan Perrilloux who completed 6-of-7 throws for 59 yards and 1 TD. Rookie RB David Wilson will also have a prominent role in the offense, coming off a team-high 43 rushing yards on just seven carries (6.0 YPC) against the Jags. D.J. Ware also rushed the ball effectively with five carries for 30 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, the Giants know they’ll have to do a much better job stopping the run than they did last week when they allowed 156 yards on 31 carries (5.0 YPC) and 2 TD.

The Jets can certainly run the football, and expect to feature some Wildcat formations with new QB Tim Tebow. Last Friday, the Jets rushed for a solid 116 yards on 27 carries (4.3 YPC) led by Tebow’s 34 yards on just four carries. Tebow and starting QB Mark Sanchez did not throw the football well though, combining to go 8-for-14 for just 48 yards (3.4 YPA), 0 TD and one bad interception by Tebow. Third-stringer Greg McElroy completed 4-of-6 throws for 49 yards (8.2 YPA), but took three sacks. Like the Giants, the Jets also have their fair share of injuries, most notably WRs Santonio Holmes (bruised ribs), Jeremy Kerley (strained hamstring) and Chaz Schilens (sprained ankle), as well as starting NT Sione Pouha (head laceration) and S Eric Smith (sprained knee).

Luck Makes First Road Start Against Steelers

Sunday’s preseason matchup between the Indianapolis Colts and Pittsburgh Steelers will be the first real defensive test for NFL rookie quarterback Andrew Luck, who was selected with the top overall pick in the draft. Luck had a promising debut with the Colts (1-0) last Sunday at home against the St. Louis Rams in a dominating 38-3 victory and will face a much bigger challenge in his first road game at Pittsburgh (0-1).

The Steelers are 4-point favorites according to the Don Best NFL odds screen with the total sitting at 38 as they host Indy on NBC’s Sunday Night Football at 8:00 p.m. (ET). Pittsburgh dropped a 24-23 decision at Philadelphia a week ago Thursday after building a 13-0 lead at halftime. The team’s offensive line continues to be a major concern after surrendering seven sacks for 57 yards in the loss to the Eagles.

Veteran QB Ben Roethlisberger looked good in limited action for the Steelers, completing 7 of 8 pass attempts for 49 yards before giving way to reserves Byron Leftwich and Jerrod Johnson, who each threw TD passes in relief. The problem was, all of them took at least two sacks behind a patchwork line that features two rookies in tackle Mike Adams and guard David DeCastro. Adams suffered a knee injury in the loss and is expected to miss at least two weeks of action while he recovers. Pittsburgh linebacker James Harrison also underwent minor knee surgery this past week and will miss some time.

The story at Heinz Field though will revolve around how Luck performs in his second start under center for Indianapolis. He completed 10 of 16 passes for 188 yards and two touchdowns, including one on the very first throw of his career on a dump-off play to running back Donald Brown that went for 63 yards. Brown did not accomplish much on the ground with two carries for two yards, but backups Darren Evans and Delone Carter totaled 42 yards on 13 carries between them and both scored touchdowns.

The Colts and Steelers have alternated wins and losses in their last five meetings, although all of those came during the regular season. Indianapolis had been a notoriously bad preseason team in past years under former head coaches Tony Dungy and Jim Caldwell, but the team needs to get Luck ready for his first year in the NFL with new personnel surrounding him. However, the team will be without leading tackler Pat Angerer, who suffered a broken foot in the preseason opener.

The weather forecast for Sunday calls for a high temperature of 76 degrees under partly sunny skies during the day, cooling to a low of 56 under the lights.

          Colts vs. Steelers

          August 18, 2012

The second week of the preseason continues on Sunday with one game on the NFL card. The Colts looked extremely impressive in Andrew Luck's professional debut as Indianapolis trounced St. Louis. Now, Indianapolis heads to Heinz Field for a nationally televised showdown with Pittsburgh, who dropped a one-point decision at Philadelphia last week.

Luck's first pass was a simple dump-off that turned into a 63-yard touchdown scamper by Donald Brown to get the Colts on the scoreboard. The former Stanford standout led another touchdown drive en route to a 38-3 drubbing of the Rams as one-point home favorites. The game finished 'over' the total of 34 thanks to a 10-point fourth quarter by the Colts, as Indianapolis threw for 314 yards in the victory.

The Steelers squandered a 13-0 advantage in the exhibition-opening loss to the Eagles, 24-23. Ben Roethlisberger participated in a pair of drives, as the two-time Super Bowl winning quarterback completed seven of eight passes for 49 yards. Backups Byron Leftwich and Jerrod Johnson each tossed a touchdown strike, but Steelers' quarterbacks were sacked a total of seven times. Pittsburgh was on verge on the covering until Alex Henery drilled a 51-yard field goal in the final seconds to give Philadelphia the win.

The loss by the Steelers last week snapped a three-game preseason winning streak, as Mike Tomlin's club has now cashed the 'over' in six of the previous eight exhibition contests since 2010. In spite of the 'push' against the Eagles, the Steelers own a 9-3-1 ATS record in the preseason the three-plus years, while winning nine consecutive home exhibition games.

The Colts have never been a great play in the preseason, but much of that predicated on Peyton Manning under center. Indianapolis never took exhibition play seriously in years' past, losing 14 of 17 games from 2008 through 2011. Now with Luck under center and Chuck Pagano patrolling the sidelines, Indianapolis will have different mindset to play this preseason games with more urgency than the last couple of season.

Following plenty of low-scoring games in the opening week, the scoreboard exploded all over the league in this week's installment of exhibition contests. Six of the eight preseason games on Thursday and Friday sailed 'over' the total, as the two games not to finish 'over' fell shy by a ½ point (Titans/Buccaneers and Lions/Ravens). Saturday's action saw the 'over' go 4-2, including late rallies in San Diego and Denver.

The Steelers are listed as four-point home favorites, while the total is set at 37 ½. The game kicks off at 8:00 PM from Heinz Field and can be seen nationally on NBC.

          Preseason report:

-- The Bengals, Browns, and Jaguars have all shot out the gate at 2-0, even though five of those six victories came against playoff teams from last season. Cleveland hasn't played a home contest yet, but the Browns are coming off impressive efforts over Detroit and Green Bay on the highway in the underdog role. Jacksonville hasn't been a great preseason team over the years, cashing just once in the last six exhibition contests.

-- On the flip side, the Falcons and Packers are each winless through two games. Obviously it doesn't mean much when the regular season begins, as both Atlanta and Green Bay will try to sure up their defense by allowing at least 55 points in exhibition play. The Falcons hit the road to take on the struggling Dolphins next week, while the Packers head to Cincinnati.

Luck leads Colts into Pittsburgh Sunday

            INDIANAPOLIS COLTS (1-0)

            at PITTSBURGH STEELERS (0-1)

            NFL Preseason Game
            Kickoff: Sunday, 8:00 p.m. EDT
            Line: Pittsburgh -4, Total: 37½

After an emphatic victory over the Rams in Andrew Luck’s NFL debut, the Colts face a much tougher test on Sunday night when they visit the Steelers.

Indianapolis crushed St. Louis 38-3, behind Luck’s 188 passing yards and two touchdowns. But just as impressive was the new 3-4 defense under first-year head coach Chuck Pagano that held the Rams to a mere 215 total yards. Pittsburgh’s defense allowed 354 yards (280 passing yards) in a 24-23 loss to the Eagles last week, and gained a paltry 99 yards through the air. Considering Pittsburgh is still dealing with a ton of injuries, plus a holdout from top wideout Mike Wallace, this spread is way too hefty to back the home team. Also consider that NFL preseason underdogs of 3.5 to 10 points are 30-11 ATS (73%) in conference games off a home win. The pick here is INDIANAPOLIS to win ATS.

This strong FoxSheets trend also supports the Colts:

Play Against - Home teams (PITTSBURGH) - after allowing 3 points or less in the first half last preseason game against opponent after a win by 10 or more points. (28-8 since 1993.) (77.8%, +19.2 units. Rating = 2*).

Luck, who threw touchdown passes of 63 yards (to Donald Brown) and 23 yards (to Austin Collie) wasn’t the only Colts quarterback that shined against the Rams. Backup Drew Stanton connected on 8-of-11 passes for 83 yards, while rookie third-stringer Chandler Harnish also had a great NFL debut, going 3-for-3 for 52 yards and a 33-yard TD pass to Jeremy Ross. These three QBs will have their work cut out for them though, considering the Steelers finished first in the NFL in both scoring defense (14.2 PPG) and passing defense (172 YPG) during the 2011 regular season. Although Indianapolis rushed for 116 yards against the Rams, the backfield will be short-handed with both Delone Carter and Mewelde Moore questionable after sustaining rib injuries against St. Louis. Other injuries of concern for Indy include ILB Pat Angerer (fractured foot) and RG Mike McGlynn (high ankle sprain).

Steelers starting QB Ben Roethlisberger was on the mark against the Eagles, completing 7-of-8 passes for 49 yards during a 16-play drive that culminated in three points. That was the only series Roethlisberger played, as he was replaced by Byron Leftwich for the remainder of the first half. Leftwich completed 3-of-5 passes for a paltry 14 yards, but did throw a 2-yard TD pass to Emmanuel Sanders. Jerrod Johnson played the entire second half, but attempted just six passes, completing three of those for 93 yards, including a 57-yard TD pass to Chris Rainey. The one major problem for the Steelers was that the quarterbacks did not have a lot of time to throw, taking seven sacks behind a makeshift offensive line. Pittsburgh got some good news this week with both RB Rashard Mendenhall (torn ACL) and NT Casey Hampton (knee surgery) coming off the PUP list, but neither player will suit up on Sunday night. Other major injuries include RB Isaac Redman (strained groin), LB James Harrison (knee), who is out at least three weeks, and OT Max Starks (knee), who needs a couple more weeks after coming off the PUP list.

and no way you can name 10 WRs that are better.

The debateable #2 WR is between Cruz, Fitz, AJ Green and maybe Julio Jones this year... I mean their are some other good ones Roddy White, Welker... This was just my opinion. If Cruz puts up 1500+ again he will put this to bed.
