    CFL Previews - Week 6 - August 3-6

    From The Sports Network

    Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -

MONTREAL ALOUETTES (2-3) AT WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS (1-4)

    DATE & TIME: Friday, August 3, 8:30 p.m. (et).

GAME NOTES: Having finally picked up their first win of the 2012 campaign, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers try to make it two in a row on Friday night as they host the Montreal Alouettes at Canad Inns Stadium.

The Blue Bombers, a team which matched up against British Columbia in last year's Grey Cup and fell to the Lions in that game at BC Place, were on the road for the first four weeks of this season and failed to catch a break at any of their stops.

Winnipeg dropped the first three outings all by double digits and then closed the gap in Week 4 versus Toronto in a 25-22 setback. Last Thursday night, the Bombers finally got over the hump with a narrow 23-22 final versus Edmonton in front of a favorable crowd for once.

The Bombers trailed by double digits in the second half last week, but they managed to put all the pieces together, particularly on defense as they limited the visitors to just a single in the final quarter to secure the much-needed victory.

In his second start of the season, Alex Brink connected on 26-of-38 passes for 294 yards and a touchdown, shaking off a couple of sacks and two interceptions along the way. Chad Simpson, who caught five balls for 49 yards, led the ground attack for Winnipeg as he produced 73 yards and a major on 14 carries.

While Winnipeg is hoping the tide has turned for the better, the Alouettes are trying to figure out why they've been so inconsistent through five weeks of action.

A 15-yard TD pass from quarterback Anthony Calvillo to Brandon London in the first quarter of Montreal's meeting with Toronto last week put the Als up after 15 minutes of action, but the offense floundered from there en route to a disappointing 23-20 home setback. With the loss, the team's second in as many games, Montreal dipped to 2-3 on the year.

Calvillo converted 25-of-42 pass attempts for 317 yards, but his one interception was thrown in the end zone near the end of the second quarter, an unfortunate turn of events for Montreal as it was closing in on tying the score at the time. The record-setting signal-caller also suffered his lone sack of the game late in the fourth frame, consequently forcing kicker Sean Whyte to attempt a 54-yard field goal which fell short as time expired.

London accounted for 102 yards on five receptions, one catch fewer than Jamel Richardson who rolled up 70 yards in the losing effort.

Gaining some recognition of his own was safety Daryl Townsend who was named the CFL Special Teams Player of the Week after posting a career-best and game- high four tackles on special teams. Townsend, now in his second CFL campaign, has made at least one special teams stop in every game this season.

While the Townsend story is nice, the real focus has to go back on Calvillo and the offense. The quarterback continues to lead the league in passing yards with 1,633 and is second in both passing TDs (11) and efficiency rating (101.1), but there are still times when the offensive line has been pushed a bit too far and exposed the signal-caller more than he would like. The problem is, the Montreal running game has yet to step up and make itself a threat, accounting for just two touchdowns over five games.

Montreal is last in the league in gaining first downs by running the ball, delivering a new set of downs just 20 times to this point. With a mere 317 yards on the ground, the Als are easily last in that department heading into the sixth game of the season, so it is easy to see why opposing defenses are charging so hard at Calvillo in the pocket.

Even though the Bombers have only one more rushing major than Montreal, the team has been much better at mixing up its offensive attack and is in the middle of the pack with its 458 yards over five games. While Winnipeg has lost a versatile quarterback in Buck Pierce to injury, someone who often took off and ran with the ball when he couldn't find a passing outlet, the team has certainly had to modify its attack in order to take some of the pressure off Brink.

Among starting quarterbacks, Brink has the lowest completion percentage (.500) and has twice as many interceptions (6) as passing scores (3), which explains why the offense is trying to add another dimension to its arsenal.

Heading into this season Montreal held a 43-34-2 advantage in the regular- season series versus the Bombers, dating back to 1946, and actually built on that edge with a 41-30 victory at Stade Percival-Molson Stadium on July 6, which means the Als have now taken six of the last eight matchups between the two.

In that first meeting, Calvillo converted all but eight of his 39 pass attempts, leading to 443 yards and three touchdowns for the hosts who controlled the action for the better part of 36 minutes. The score could have easily been even more lopsided, if not for the fact that Montreal was flagged for 13 penalties, costing the squad a total of 160 yards.

Guilty of the most turnovers in the league after five weeks with 19, Winnipeg has only been hurting itself as Brink tries to gain control of the offense and find his comfort zone. That's something Calvillo and the Als shouldn't have to worry about.

Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Montreal 31, Winnipeg 20

BRITISH COLUMBIA LIONS (3-2) AT TORONTO ARGONAUTS (3-2)

    DATE & TIME: Monday, August 6, 5:00 p.m. (et).

GAME NOTES: Hitting the road for the second of two straight outings, the British Columbia Lions find themselves with plenty of time to prepare for their meeting with the Toronto Argonauts at Rogers Centre on Monday.

The Lions, winners of last year's Grey Cup, kicked off the 2012 season with back-to-back victories over Winnipeg and Hamilton, but then lost consecutive games versus Saskatchewan and Edmonton which brought them back to the rest of the pack in the West Division. Last weekend, the team thumped Calgary on the road, 34-8, representing its best defensive effort to date, and subsequently moved into a three-way tie for first place in the division.

Off to a bit of a slow start last Saturday night, the Lions went from a mere three points in the first quarter in Calgary to generating double digits in each of the final three frames to slow the Stampeders down to a crawl. The defense also came to play for the visitors as they kept Calgary out of the end zone for a full 60 minutes.

Travis Lulay connected on 30-of-37 passes for 315 yards and three touchdowns for the Lions, adding another 41 yards on six rushing attempts as BC controlled the action for close to two-thirds of the meeting.

Andrew Harris was the leading rusher for the group with a game-high 55 yards in nine attempts, not to mention turning himself into a valued receiver who caught five balls for 37 yards and crossed the goal line twice.

From a defensive standpoint, the Lions limited the home team to just 14 first downs and a mere 29 yards rushing.

As for the Argonauts, their meeting with Montreal last Friday was vastly different than BC's runaway victory. For the second game in a row and the third time in as many victories on the season, Toronto won by just three points with a 23-20 triumph versus the Alouettes.

In week 2, the Argos notched their first win of the season with a 39-36 final against visiting Calgary, and then two weeks ago it was Winnipeg that felt the sting of a close call, 25-22. In fact, all five games thus far for Toronto have been decided by single digits.

However, last week the Argos were rather lucky to have escaped Montreal with a win as the hosts missed on a lengthy field goal attempt at the end of regulation, and quarterback Anthony Calvillo tossed his only interception of the meeting in the end zone which ended what could have been a significant scoring drive for the hosts.

While Ricky Ray tends to grab the spotlight regularly now for his new team, converting 20-of-30 pass attempts for 280 yards and two touchdowns, former Montreal member Chad Owens put forth yet another fantastic all-around display for the visitors. Primarily a kick returner for the Argos the two previous seasons, Owens is now getting his chance to shine with the offense and on Friday did just that as he reeled in a game-high seven passes for 97 yards and a pair of scores. Add to that his six kickoff returns for 121 yards and four punt returns for 59 yards, and he is clearly becoming one of the most dangerous performers in the game.

Owens, who led the CFL in combined yards with more than 3,000 in each of the previous campaigns, is again on top in that category with a staggering 1,291 yards through five games. Setting a blistering pace for the rest of the league to witness, Owens is on pace to put up mind-boggling numbers once again if he can stay healthy.

Even though he might be prone to being separated from the ball from time to time, Owens is already fourth in the league in receiving yards (392) and has found the end zone three times in the last couple of weeks in order to help move Toronto into a tie with Hamilton for first place in the East Division at 3-2.

Because of the efforts of Owens, Toronto leads the league in kickoff return yards with 738 and that has helped give Ray a shorter field than the competition, and yet the signal-caller is still second in the CFL in total passing yards with 1,542.

However, Ray and the offensive line will have to be on the lookout for BC's Keron Williams who leads the league in sacks with six, a total that is more than half of his career-high of 11 that he managed for the Lions last season.

In terms of the all-time series between these two clubs, BC maintains a 49-31-2 edge in regular-season matchups dating back to 1954. The Lions won the most recent meeting last September by a score of 28-6 in Vancouver, which means the squad has now taken three in a row and all but one of the last 14 encounters.

The teams are slated to compete against each other once more during this regular season, matching up at BC Place in the middle of September.

With Owens capable of spreading the field on offense and creating havoc on kick returns, the BC defense and special teams will have its hands full trying to keep track of him. When given the time, Ray can carve up a defense as well as anyone, which should give the Argonauts the advantage in this meeting.

Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Toronto 20, British Columbia 17

Inside the CFL: Bye week breakdown

Hamilton ON (Sports Network) - The bye week is usually a positive for football teams.

The players can heal up physically, go home and visit family and generally get a mental break from the game.

The coaches on the other hand, may take some time away from the office, but the upcoming game is never far from their minds, and if a team heads into the bye week with a loss, it's not a very restful time.

Hamilton, Saskatchewan, Edmonton and Calgary have the bye week off, so that means just two games in Week 6: Montreal at Winnipeg on Friday and BC at Toronto on Monday.

It also means it's a chance to see which teams are playing up to their potential, and which teams appear to be heading in the wrong direction.

      First: BC Lions (3-2)

The defending Grey Cup champions were spinning their wheels a bit, heading into their game last week in Calgary. New head coach Mike Benevides was feeling the heat after two losses in a row, and some pundits were starting to wonder about his future.

They didn't have to wonder long.

The Lions totally dominated the Stampeders, 34-8, with Travis Lulay completing 30-of-37 passes for 315 yards and three touchdowns. The Lions chocked up 28 first downs and kept the ball for over 38 minutes.

In some ways, it was a statement game for the Lions.

General manager Wally Buono, who gave up the head coaching job after last season, and hand-picked Benevides as his successor, perhaps summed it up best.

"(Benevides) passed his first major test," Buono said after the game. "Ten years from now, you might look back and see that win was a defining moment in his career.

"You don't learn from wins. You learn from your adversities. How do (coaches) handle two or three losses? How do you handle it when you're getting kicked and nobody is helping you out? He prepared his team well, got his message across and they delivered."

And the rest of the league should take notice.

      Second: Hamilton Tiger-Cats (3-2)

At the start of the season, this corner said that the Tiger-Cats would be a fun team to watch.

Offensively, they have a lot of weapons, and once they get rolling, they're tough to stop.

Case in point, last Saturday in Regina.

The Tiger-Cats hadn't won a game at Mosaic Stadium since 2000, so they were 0-11 heading into the game with the Roughriders.

Fighting back from a 33-14 deficit, the Tiger-Cats roared to a 35-34 win.

Quarterback Henry Burris, after a first half that saw him complete 9-of-15 passes for 103 yards, turned red hot in the second half, completing 19-of-23 passes for 252 yards and four touchdowns.

Hamilton has now scored the most points in the league (162), leads the CFL in passing touchdowns (15), and Burris leads all CFL quarterbacks with an efficiency rating of 118.3.

However, one area of concern remains the third quarter, where Hamilton has been outscored, 64-17. If the Tiger-Cats can clean up that department, they have the ability to be downright scary.

Third: Toronto Argonauts (3-2) It wasn't pretty, but a win is a win.

New Toronto head coach Scott Milanovich went back to familiar territory last week. Milanovich spent five years in Montreal as an assistant coach, so to say the Argos' 23-20 win over the Alouettes was sweet would be an understatement.

Argos fans are starting to see the emergence of Chad Owens as potential CFL superstar.

Playing at slotback, he had seven catches for 92 yards and two touchdowns. He now has three TDs in his last two games after going 22 without catching a TD pass. He leads the CFL with 1,291 combined yards.

Quarterback Ricky Ray was 20-for-30 for 280 yards.

      Still, there's room for improvement.

"We just can't seem to put two halves together," Milanovich said. "We played very well in the first half and then had breakdowns in the third quarter and let it get close.

"We need to get back to work and find a way to put a full game together."

They'll get a good indication of how far they've progressed when they play the Lions.

      Fourth: Edmonton Eskimos (3-2)

You could see this one coming a mile away.

The Eskimos went into Winnipeg last week for the Blue Bombers' first regular- season home game after four straight road games. Winnipeg was winless and the pressure on the coaching staff was immense.

Edmonton fell just short, losing, 23-22. What was frustrating for the Eskimos was they had a chance to possibly win the game, but quarterback Steven Jyles fumbled with 43 seconds left at the Winnipeg 28 to end any hopes of a victory.

But after five weeks, what really jumps out is the Eskimos defense. It has allowed just 79 points, the best in the league. The Eskimos also lead the league in sacks with 14 and are tied for the league lead in interceptions with seven.

What's the adage, defense wins championships?

      Fifth: Saskatchewan Roughriders (3-2)

It was called the strength of the Roughriders. It's rapidly becoming their Achilles heel.

Two weeks ago, the Roughriders had a 17-point lead on the Stampeders in Calgary, 35-18 with 5:17 left in the game.

They blew the lead and lost 41-38 in overtime.

Last Saturday, after the first play of the fourth quarter, Saskatchewan led Hamilton 33-14 at home. They lost, 35-34.

Perhaps the Roughriders' 3-0 start was an aberration. Maybe now, the real Roughriders are showing themselves.

Head coach Corey Chamblin admitted after the Hamilton loss, "It's always worrisome, to the point where we're defense and they get paid to stop people. That's what we do. We get paid to stop people."

If that's the case, it appears it's money wasted.

      Sixth: Montreal Alouettes (2-3)

One gets the sense something is going to happen in Montreal, and soon.

The Alouettes suffered their first home loss of the year, 23-20 to the Argos.

Montreal's offense piled up 417 yards, but, as has been the case for the last few weeks, quarterback Anthony Calvillo continues to take more shots than he ever has in the past.

It's the other side of the ball that's causing a lot of angst in Montreal. Defensive coordinator Jeff Reinebold's defense continues to be burned by opposition quarterbacks.

The Als defense has allowed 74 percent of pass attempts, by far the worst in the league. The Als also are last in average yards allowed per pass, 9.5.

Is it Reinebold's scheme, the players or something else?

If the Als lose in Winnipeg, and the defense is ripped apart, look for some changes in their upcoming bye week.

      Seventh: Calgary Stampeders (2-3)

The Stampeders appear to be a team on the verge of imploding.

After their 34-8 shellacking by BC last week, running back Jon Cornish clearly was not a happy man. He ended up with six carries for minus-1 yard, and collectively Calgary managed only 29 rushing yards compared to B.C.'s 161.

Cornish tore a strip off his offensive line, and when it came to his own performance, he said he was "very satisfied."

"It's particularly annoying from the running back position when you get the ball and get smacked in the face as soon as you get the ball," he told the Calgary Herald. "You either have holes or you don't. You either have push or you don't."

The next morning, he apologized for his comments on Twitter.

It's been a long bye week in Cowtown, and it could get even uglier.

The Stampeders' next game is Aug. 9, when they visit the surging Tiger-Cats, who just happen to be led by Henry Burris. He clearly didn't like the way he was treated by Stamps head coach John Hufnagel at the end of last season.

      Eighth: Winnipeg Blue Bombers (1-4)

All is right with the Blue Bombers, at least for a week. The 23-22 win over Edmonton in front a loud, boisterous crowd at CanadInn Stadium, gave the Bombers their first win of the year.

But the Bombers admit there's a lot of work to do, including shoring up a defense that allowed the Eskimos to move downfield on the last drive of the game. Had it not been for Steven Jyles' fumble, the Blue Bombers could be looking at an 0-5 record.

With a win over Montreal Friday night, the Bombers are right back in the battle for third in the CFL East. A loss, and the cries to make changes will get loud, once again.

CFL preview and pick: Alouettes and Blue Bombers

Montreal Alouettes vs. Winnipeg Blue Bombers (-2, 55.5)

Friday, Aug. 3, Canad Inns Stadium, Winnipeg, 8:30 p.m. ET

It’s almost hard to believe, but Montreal has lost two games in a row for the first time since 2008. And it gets even worse when it comes to covering the pointspread.

The Als have now failed to cover the spread in three straight games and are 1-4 ATS (against the spread) this season. Going back to last season, Montreal has only covered one of its past 12 games, making the team one of the worst bets in sports recently.

If Montreal bettors are looking for a bright spot it’s that the lone moneymaking win for Montreal was a 41-30 drubbing over Winnipeg on July 6. The Bombers had their worst defensive performance since 2005 in that one, surrendering 551 yards of net offense.

Winnipeg is getting some bodies back on defense this week including linebacker Marcellus Bowman and some help on the D-line. The Bombers are also coming off their first win of the season after coming back from a 13-point deficit to beat Edmonton last week. It just happened to be the Blue Bombers’ first home game of the year too, after opening the season with four straight road games.

Alex Brink will get the start again at QB in place of the injured Buck Pierce. Brink earned his first win as the starting QB last week and looked much more comfortable than the week before when he started and lost to Toronto.

Things could be looking up for the Bombers.

Pick: Covers Contest players like Montreal by a big margin.

Note: Keep an eye on the weather for this game. Forecasters are calling for showers and thunder storms in Winnipeg Friday.

          CFL Week 6 power rankings

Parity continues to rule as we head into Week 6 of the CFL season.

No fewer than five teams are deadlocked with three victories apiece, good enough for top spot. Just two games separate the best from the worst, and even the Blue Bombers, who looked like a down-trodden team a couple of weeks ago, appear ready to make some noise.

Here's my take on how the league shakes down from 1-through-8.

          1. B.C. Lions The Lions suffered through a tough two-week stretch, dropping a heart-breaker in Saskatchewan before returning home to be shocked by the Eskimos. They more than righted the ship last week, however, blasting a quality Stampeders squad 34-8 in Calgary.

          2. Hamilton Tiger-Cats There's no question, the talent is there for the Ti-Cats to contend for a title this season. It wasn't surprising that they struggled out of the gate, given all the new faces at key positions, but now that they've got things rolling, they're going to be tough to stop. Hamilton's offense remains the driving force, putting up a league-high 162 points to date.

          3. Saskatchewan Roughriders The Riders will enjoy a much-needed week off before hitting the road for a tough back-to-back set in Edmonton and B.C. They're coming off a pair of disappointing losses, first blowing a 17-point lead in Calgary and then coughing up an 18-point cushion at home against Hamilton last week.

          4. Toronto Argonauts Despite their sputtering offense, I'm a believer in this Argos squad. They've gutted out back-to-back division wins over the Bombers and Als thanks to stifling defensive efforts. Now it's measuring stick time with a Monday date against the Lions.

          5. Edmonton Eskimos No team has given up fewer points than the Eskimos this season. In fact, they've allowed a grand total of just 40 points in their two losses. Unfortunately, I don't think Steven Jyles is the answer at quarterback.

          6. Calgary Stampeders The Stamps are a much better team than they showed in last week's shellacking at the hands of the Lions. Prior to that no-show, they had scored at least 32 points in each of their first four games. Perhaps a bye week will help them get their defense in order.

          7. Montreal Alouettes Montreal has gotten used to being the 'hunted' over the years, but it's currently looking up at two teams in the East Division, and headed in the wrong direction following back-to-back losses to the Ti-Cats and Argos. Until the Als get their offensive line issues sorted out, they'll continue to struggle.

          8. Winnipeg Blue Bombers I see the Bombers as a team on the rise, but they'll remain in the basement for one more week thanks to their league-worst 1-4 record. Alex Brink has brought some stability at the quarterback position, breaking out with his best game of the season in last week's win. He'll continue to get better, and so will the Bombers.

Feel free to chime in with your thoughts on this week's rankings.

You can check out my complete Week 6 card at Covers Experts, where I'm off to a 13-3 start this season, and 41-20 going back to the start of 2010.

          Best of luck this weekend!

TORONTO – Following a Week 5 that saw three of the four games be decided by three points or less, Week 6 will feature a shortened schedule, as half the league takes a breather during their bye week,

The two games this week will have major implications on the standings in both divisions. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers continue their four-game home stand on Friday night, as they play host to the Montreal Alouettes.

With a win, the Bombers will leapfrog the Als for third place in the East Division, while the Als will be in an unfamiliar last.

Monday will see the BC Lions travel east to take on the Toronto Argonauts at Rogers Centre. Last week, the Lions snapped a two-game losing streak with a convincing victory over the Calgary Stampeders, placing them in a three-way tie for first in the West.

The Argos, meanwhile, will aim for their third win in as many weeks, hoping to earn some much needed breathing room atop the East Division.

Equipped with the most up-to-date storylines, roster moves, stats, milestones and trends, the Week 5 CFL.ca Game Notes will provide you with everything you need for the upcoming week of Canadian football.

            By the Numbers

Heading into their Week 6 clash with the Bombers, the Alouettes are in much more unfamiliar territory than you might have initially thought.

Not since 2008 – Marc Trestman’s first year in the CFL – has Montreal been below .500 at this point in the season.

Is it a matter of Montreal struggling? Or is it that the Als are no longer the only team with the potential to dominate the East?

When looking at the numbers, it’s likely the latter.

Through five weeks this season, 65 per cent of the games have been decided in the final three minutes, while 50 per cent of them have been decided by four points or less.

Last week there were no kick return touchdowns but the trend remains strong with seven in 20 games. Each team has at least one player with “big play” return capability and there have been 28 such returns this year.

An emerging trend this season is the possibility of a big comeback in each game. Of the 20 games played, teams have overcome 10+ point deficits with two of those from 17 points or more.

Hamilton’s Henry Burris became only the third QB since 2002 to record four or more TD passes in consecutive games. Casey Printers last did it in 2005, while Khari Jones did it for Winnipeg in 2002.

BC’s Travis Lulay completed his last 17-of-18 passes in the second half for a perfect QB rating of 158.3 in the win over Calgary.

Toronto and BC meet in Week 6 and they rank one and in both offence and defence after five games.

CFL Betting Notes - Week 7

                August 8, 2012

While last week's schedule in the CFL was limited to just two games in light of two straight weeks of byes, the action was not. Last Friday, Montreal reasserted itself as a force in the East with a 36-26 victory over Winnipeg as a two-point road favorite.
In a special Monday edition of the CFL, the defending champion British Columbia Lions extended their current winning streak to two games by grinding out an 18-9 win over Toronto on the road as three-point favorites

The following is brief preview of this week's CFL games along with the opening point spread and 'over/under' lines as provided by 5Dimes.

                Thursday, Aug. 9

Calgary Stampeders vs. Hamilton Tiger-Cats (-4) Total: 61

Calgary finds itself in last place in the West Division coming off of its bye with a 2-3 record both straight up and against the spread. The Stampeders' normally potent offense ground to a halt in a 34-8 loss to BC as one-point home underdogs right before the break. The total stayed 'under' the 58-point line after going 'over' in three of their first four games. With Kevin Glenn as its starting quarterback, Calgary will try and recapture the formula that led to an average of 36.8 points a game in its first four outings of the year.

The Tiger Cats went into their bye week with a thrilling 35-34 victory over Saskatchewan as 3 ½-point road underdogs. The win boosted their overall record to 3-2 SU and a profitable 4-1 ATS. The total has now gone 'over' in all five of their games. Hamilton is another team with a potent offensive attack, but it has to be a bit leery of a defense that is giving-up an average of 33.4 points a game.

The Stampeders are 9-3 ATS in their last 12 games following a SU loss and 6-2-1 ATS in their last eight games following a bye week. The total has gone 'over' in six of their last eight games overall. The Tiger-Cats have enjoyed recent success in the month of August with a 5-2 record ATS in their last seven games. The total has gone 'over' in eight of their last 10 home games. Head-to-head, Calgary is 5-2 ATS in the last seven meetings and total has gone 'over' in five of those games.

                Friday, Aug. 10

Saskatchewan Roughriders vs. Edmonton Eskimos (- 1 ½) Total: 45

The Roughriders fast 3-0 start both SU and ATS was short-lived with SU losses in their last two games heading into their bye week. They dropped a 41-38 decision to Calgary in overtime as 3 ½-point road underdogs before losing to Hamilton by just one point in Week 5. Saskatchewan is still a healthy 4-1 ATS with the total going 'over' in three of the five games. The defense started the season on solid footing, but has given-up a total of 76 points in the last two games.

Edmonton dropped to 3-2 both SU and ATS right before its bye week with a tough 23-22 loss to Winnipeg in Week 5 as a one-point road favorite. The Eskimos remain just a half of a game out of the lead in the West, but have to be concerned about a rash of injuries to their offensive line. Two of their tackles remain out indefinitely with knee injuries and center Gord Hinse is listed as questionable for Friday night's game.

Saskatchewan has failed to cover in five of its last six games following a SU loss and the total has stayed 'under' in its last five games following a bye. The Eskimos are 5-2 ATS in their last seven games following an ATS loss. The total has stayed 'under' in nine of their last 13 home games. Edmonton has won five of the last seven meetings SU and is 4-3 ATS. The total has stayed 'under' in 16 of the last 21 meetings in Edmonton.

                  Week 6

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CFL preview: Calgary Stampeders at Hamilton Tiger-Cats
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Calgary Stampeders vs. Hamilton Tiger-Cats (-4, 61)

Ivor Wynne Stadium, Hamilton, 7:00p.m. ET

After an 0-2 start to the season the Hamilton Tiger-Cats have become one of the hottest bets in summer sports after winning three straight games outright and four straight games against the spread.

The streak comes just in time for quarterback Henry Burris to face his old team, the Calgary Stampeders, Thursday night in Hammertown. Burris has helped the Ticats score at least 35 points in each of their last four games, making them the highest scoring team in the league. He has tossed 15 touchdowns against just three interceptions.

Things are a little more bleak on defense where Hamilton ranks last in the league in points allowed (33.4 per game), yards allowed (426.4), and fewest sacks (6). The only good part about that for bettors is the over has been reliable at 5-0 in Hamilton's games this season.

Calgary’s defense hasn’t been any better than its opponent. The Stampeders have surrendered at least 33 points in each of its last four games and they went 1-3 straight up and against the spread during that span.

The offensive line is a huge area of concern for Calgary entering Week 7 after it helped the offense gain just 29 yards rushing in a 34-8 loss to B.C. in its last game in Week 5. There are key injuries at left guard and right tackle and they’ll be plugging holes with less experience than they’d like.

Underdog Calgary will need a big game from wide receiver Nik Lewis, who leads the league with six touchdowns this season.

                  Trends and notes:

Over is 5-0 in Stampeders last five vs. a team with a winning record.
Stampeders rank second in the league with just 90.8 rushing yards against.
Stampeders rank last in the league in time of possession at 22:50 per game.
Stampeders are 5-2 ATS in their last seven meetings.
Over is 5-2 in the last seven meetings.
Kevin Glenn is 1-2 as starting QB for Calgary in replacement of the injured Drew Tate. Glenn was traded to Calgary in the Burris trade in the offseason.

Canadian Bacon: Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Winnipeg Blue Bombers
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (+3, 55)

Hamilton was dealt a reality check, losing 31-20 to the Calgary Stampeders in Week 7 following a three-game winning streak that saw the TiCats extend a four-game ATS run.

Heavy rain kept both teams from getting on the scoreboard early in the game and Hamilton was outworked by former QB Kevin Glenn and a scrappy Stamps team looking for its first road win of the season.

Now, the Tiger-Cats turn their attention to a Blue Bombers squad that is trying to climb out of the league’s basement. Winnipeg followed its first win of the year with a 36-26 loss to Montreal in Week 6 and had the bye week to ready itself for Thursday’s home date with Hamilton.

The Bombers are making a switch at QB, giving the nod to Joey Elliott over Alex Brink for Week 8. Elliot hasn’t started a CFL game since 2010 but head coach Paul LaPolice is confident in Elliot. LaPolice has come under fire after the 1-5 start but told the media he isn’t worried about job security.

“I’m preparing to win a football game,” LaPolice told the Winnipeg Sun. “We’re one-third through our season, we’ve had some challenges for our first third of the season. There’s still 12 football games to play. Nobody in the CFL has established themselves as elite. We’re certainly not happy (with how) we’re playing and we need to get better and I think we will. I’m concerned about winning a football game.

“Sometimes, I think people gloom and doom very much. Things out of my control are out of my control. We’ve got a lot of football left to be played.”

LaPolice will also match wits with one of his former staff, Hamilton’s defensive coordinator Casey Creehan. Creehan, who served two years under LaPolice, has helped the TiCats improve against the pass, ranking third in the CFL. Hamilton will attack Winnipeg’s untested arm early and often.

                        TRENDS:

                        * Over is 6-1 in the last seven meetings in Winnipeg.
                        * Under is 5-2 in the last seven meetings.
                        * Tiger-Cats are 6-1 ATS in their last seven games following a loss.
                        * Blue Bombers are 9-1 ATS in their last 10 Thursday games.

The entire CFL was back in action in Week 8 after a couple of bye weeks and as a result the race in both the East and West Division is as tight as ever. The upsets continued into the weekend with Toronto getting past Calgary 22-14 as a 4 ½-point road underdog, but British Columbia snapped the streak at three with a convincing 24-5 win over Saskatchewan as a six-point home favorite in Sunday's finale.
