CFL Betting Notes - Week 3

            July 11, 2012

We are only two weeks into the 2012 CFL regular season there are just two undefeated teams left in the ranks. The defending champion British Columbia Lions improved to 2-0 with 39-36 victory over Hamilton, but they could not cover the eight points at home. The surprising Saskatchewan Roughriders, who won just five games last season, won their second game in a row with a 17-1 grinder over Edmonton as four-point home favorites. There will be just one undefeated team this time next week since these two will meet against one another this Saturday.
In other action from last week, Montreal knocked off Winnipeg 41-30 as a 6 ½-point home favorite to send the Blue Bombers to a 0-2 start and the Toronto Argonauts upended Calgary 39-36 as three-point home underdogs.

The following is brief preview of this week’s CFL games along with the opening point spread and ‘over/under’ lines as provided by BetOnline.com.

            Thursday, July 12

Calgary Stampeders at Montreal Alouettes (-6) Total: 56

In the first rematch of the regular season, the Stampeders will try and duplicate their efforts that led to a 38-10 romp over Montreal as 2 ½-point home favorites on opening day. Last week’s loss to Toronto proved to be costly as quarterback Drew Tate is ‘out’ indefinitely with a shoulder injury. Look for Kevin Glenn to get the start in his place. Montreal’s veteran gunslinger Anthony Calvillo is also nicked-up with a shoulder injury and remains ‘questionable’ for Thursday night.

The Stampeders are 8-2 against the spread in their last 10 games following a SU loss and Montreal is 8-20 ATS in its last 28 games following a SU win. Calgary has now won four of the last five meetings both straight up and ATS and is 7-3 SU in the last 10. The total stayed ‘under’ the 55-point total in Week 1 but it has gone ‘over’ the total in five of the previous six meetings.

            Friday, July 13

Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Edmonton Eskimos (-1) Total: 45

Winnipeg has been outscored 74-46 in its first two games and has failed to cover in either loss. Both Buck Pierce and Alex Brink have been ineffective so far at quarterback and neither is completing over 60 percent of their throws. Edmonton has to be happy to be 1-1 considering it has managed to score a total of 20 points in the first two games.

The Blue Bombers are 15-5-2 ATS in their last 22 games as underdogs and Edmonton is 17-35 ATS in its last 52 games as home favorites. Winnipeg is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings and 6-2 ATS in its last eight games in Edmonton. The total has stayed ‘under’ in six of the last seven meetings overall.

            Saturday, July 14

British Columbia Lions (-2 ½) at Saskatchewan Roughriders Total: 54

The Lions are 2-0 SU (1-1 ATS) but have to be a bit concerned with the play of quarterback Travis Lulay. He has thrown for three touchdowns, but is completing just 60.7 percent of his passes. On the other hand, the Roughriders have to be thrilled with the play of Darian Durant, who appears to have returned to his 2010 form when he led the CFL in total passing yards.

BC is 8-2 ATS in its last 10 games following a SU win. Saskatchewan is 22-7 ATS in its last 29 games as an underdog at home. The Lions have won four of the last five meetings SU and are 7-2 ATS in their last nine games at Mosaic Stadium. The total has stayed ‘under’ in four of the last five meetings.

Toronto Argonauts at Hamilton Tiger Cats (-5) Total: 53

Toronto has to be extremely happy with the offseason trade for quarterback Ricky Ray. So far, the veteran signal caller has completed 74.7 percent of this passes for 705 yards and three touchdowns. The 0-2 Tiger Cats have to been more than a bit concerned with a defense that has given-up a total of 82 points in its first two games.

The Argonauts are 5-1 ATS in their last six games as underdogs, while Hamilton is 19-42 ATS in its last 61 games as a favorite. Toronto has lost seven of the last 10 meetings SU, but is 8-3 ATS in its last 11 trips to Hamilton. The total has stayed ‘under’ in eight of the last nine meetings overall.

CFL Betting Notes - Week 4

                July 17, 2012

The 2012 CFL regular season enters its fourth week of games and the biggest surprise of the early season has been the undefeated Saskatchewan Roughriders. Last Saturday's 23-20 victory over British Columbia as three-point home underdogs ran their record to 3-0 both straight-up and against the spread. Last Thursday night, Montreal kicked-off Week 3 with a thrilling 33-32 come-from-behind victory over Calgary as a seven-point home favorite.

The Edmonton Eskimos pinned a third-straight loss on Winnipeg in a 42-10 romp as one-point home favorites on Friday night and Hamilton closed things out on Saturday night with a 36-27 win over Toronto as a 3 ½-point home favorite.

The following is brief preview of this week's CFL games along with the opening point spread and 'over/under' lines as provided by BetOnline.com.

                Wednesday, July 18

Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Toronto Argonauts (-7) Over/Under: 52

The Blue Bombers 0-3 start both SU and ATS is not completely unexpected considering that quarterback Buck Pierce has been in and out of the lineup due to injury. He is listed as doubtful for this game with a foot injury. Toronto's offense has been riding high behind its new quarterback Ricky Ray. He has already thrown for 937 yards and three touchdowns in his first three games with the team.

Winnipeg is 0-5-1 ATS in its last six games as an underdog on the road. The total has gone 'over' in five of its last seven games. The Argonauts are 5-0 ATS in their last five games following a SU loss. The total has gone 'over' in five of their last seven games. Head-to-head, the Blue Bombers are just 7-18 ATS in their last 25 trips to Toronto and the total has stayed 'under' in 11 of the last 16 meetings overall.

                Thursday, July 19

                Saskatchewan Roughriders at Calgary Stampeders (-3 ½) Over/Under: 52 ½

Much of the Roughriders' early success can be attributed to the revitalized play of quarterback Darian Durant. He has completed 67 percent of his passes for 765 yards and four TD's in his first three games this season. Calgary lost its QB Drew Tate for the season with a shoulder injury, so it will be up to Kevin Glenn to fill the void. He threw for close to 300 yards against Montreal last week but an interception late in the game proved to be costly.

Saskatchewan is 5-0 ATS in its last five games, but 3-8 ATS in its last 11 games against the West Division. The total has stayed 'under' in 17 of its last 22 games. The Stampeders are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 games following a SU loss. The total has stayed 'under' in five of their last six home games. The Roughriders are 1-5 both SU and ATS in the last five meetings and the total has stayed 'under' in four of those games.

                Friday, July 20

Edmonton Eskimos at British Columbia Lions (-9) Over/Under: 49

Edmonton's offense finally came to life last week with 42 points after managing a total of 20 points in its first two games. Lions' QB Travis Lulay threw for 345 yards in BC's loss to Saskatchewan last week, but completed just 57.5 percent of his passes and was intercepted twice. He did add 58 yards on the ground on just three carries. The Eskimos are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games following a SU win and the total has stayed 'under' in nine of their last 12 games against the West. BC is 7-2 ATS in its last nine games in the division and 5-2 ATS in its last seven games as a favorite. The total has stayed 'under' in 13 of its last 18 games. The Lions are 4-0 both SU and ATS in the last four meetings and the total has stayed 'under' in three of the last five games between the two.

                Saturday, July 21

                Montreal Alouettes vs. Hamilton Tiger-Cats (-1) Over/Under: 59 ½

Montreal has scored a total of 84 points in its first three games, but it has also given-up 100 total points. Veteran quarterback Anthony Calvillo leads the CFL with 942 yards passing and seven touchdown throws. The Tiger-Cats are the highest scoring team in the East Division with an average of 29.3 points a game, but have given-up 109 total points in their first three games.

The Alouettes are 1-9 ATS in their last 10 games and the total has gone 'over' in eight of their last 11 games on the road. Hamilton is 4-1 ATS in its last five games against a team with a winning record, but just 20-42 ATS in its last 62 games as a favorite. The total has gone 'over' in seven of their last nine games at home. The Tiger-Cats are 4-2 SU and 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings and the total has stayed 'under' in five of the last eight meetings.

CFL Betting Notes - Week 5

                        July 25, 2012

Week 4 in the CFL got an early start with Toronto dropping Winnipeg to 0-4 on the year with a 25-22 victory as an 8 ½ -point home favorite on Wednesday night. The following night, Calgary knocked Saskatchewan from the ranks of the unbeaten with a thrilling 41-38 overtime win as a 3 ½ -point home favorite.

The weekend's action started with a Friday night stunner as Edmonton rolled over British Columbia 27-14 as a 8 ½ -point road underdog. Hamilton wrapped the week up with an impressive 39-24 rout of Montreal on Saturday night as a 2 ½-point home favorite.

The following is brief preview of this week's CFL games along with the opening point spread and 'over/under' lines as provided by BetOnline.com.

                        Thursday, July 26

Edmonton Eskimos (-2 ½) vs. Winnipeg Blue Bombers Over/Under: 46.5

The Eskimos are now 3-1 on the year both straight-up and against the spread and tied with Saskatchewan for the early lead in the West Division. The total has stayed 'under' in three of the four games. The loss of quarterback Buck Pierce, who is out indefinitely with a foot injury, has put a major crimp in the Blue Bombers' offense.

Edmonton is 6-22 ATS in its last 28 games as a favorite on the road. It is 2-5 ATS in its last seven games against Winnipeg and the total has stayed 'under' in six of the last eight meetings. The Blue Bombers are 4-1 ATS at home in their last five games against Edmonton.

                        Friday, July 27

                        Toronto Argonauts vs. Montreal Alouettes (-3 ½) Over/Under: 57

Toronto's new quarterback Ricky Ray is one of the main reasons for the Argonauts 2-2 SU (1-3 ATS) start. He has completed 69.5 percent of his throws for 1,262 yards and six touchdowns. Montreal is also 2-2 SU (1-3 ATS) with the total going 'over' in its last three games. Its veteran quarterback Anthony Calvillo leads the CFL in total passing yards with 1,316.

The Argonauts 1-6 ATS in their last seven games following a SU win. They are also just 2-5 ATS in their last seven trips to Montreal and 3-11 ATS in the last 14 meetings overall. The total has gone 'over' in five of the last seven meetings.

                        Saturday, July 28

                        Hamilton Tiger-Cats vs. Saskatchewan Roughriders (-4) Over/Under: 56

Hamilton's win last week evened its record to 2-2 SU (3-1 ATS). The total has gone 'over' in all four games. Tiger-Cats quarterback Henry Burris leads the CFL in touchdown passes with 11. Despite last week's SU loss, Saskatchewan remains a perfect 4-0 ATS this season with the total going 2-2 in its first four games.

The Tiger-Cats are just 3-12-1 ATS in their last 16 games in Saskatchewan and 6-19-1 in the last 26 meetings overall. They have lost four of the last five games SU and the total has gone 'over' in three of those five meetings.

British Columbia Lions vs. Calgary Stampeders (-2) Over/Under: 58

The defending champions have lost two straight games for the first time since Week 5 of last season. BC is 2-2 SU and 1-3 ATS. The total has stayed 'under' in three of the four games. Calgary is also 2-2 SU (2-2 ATS) with the total going 'over' in its last three games. CFL preview and pick: Argonauts at Alouettes

Toronto Argonauts at Montreal Alouettes (-3.5, 57)

Undefeated in two home games thus far, the Montreal Alouettes (2-2) try to keep the ball rolling when they host the Toronto Argonauts (2-2) in an East Division showdown Friday night.

The Alouettes are trying to overcome a 39-24 loss to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats last week. The Als’ defense was torched by Hamilton pivot Henry Burris, who completed 27 of his 30 pass attempts. Montreal has given up 139 points – more than any club except the winless Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

The Argonauts held off the Blue Bombers 25-22 in Week 4 to improve their home record to 2-0 but have come up empty in two road dates this season, dropping games in Edmonton and Hamilton. Argos head coach Scott Milanovich, who spent five years as the Montreal offensive boss, devised many of the systems deployed by the Als and knows QB Anthony Calvillo better than anyone.

The Alouettes came away with a 29-19 win at home in the most recent matchup with the Argos last October and have posted three straight victories and 11 in the last 13 contests with Toronto.

                            Betting notes:

                            - The over is 4-0 in the Argonauts’ last four games as underdogs of 3.5-10.0 points.

                            - The Alouettes are 1-8 ATS in their last nine games as favorites.

                            - The over is 4-0 in Montreal’s last four home games.

Pick: 65 percent of Covers Contest players like Montreal to cover Friday.
