Thursday's betting tips: Rays SP Hellickson cashing in on under

    Weather watch

Rain is in the forecast for both Poznan and Gdansk, the host cities for Thursday’s Euro 2012 action. Italy and Croatia play at Stadion Miejski in Poznan, where there is a 90 percent chance of rain. Spain and Ireland meet at PGE Arena in Gdansk, where there is a 70 percent chance of rain.

    Who’s hot

NBA: Oklahoma City Thunder – The Thunder have won five in a row SU and ATS, including a 105-94 victory over the Miami Heat as 5-point home favorites in Game 1 of the NBA Finals. Oklahoma City is set as a 5.5-point favorite for Game 2.

MLB: Washington Nationals: The Nats have won six in a row heading into Friday’s series opener with the New York Yankees, who have won five straight as of Wednesday’s clash with the Atlanta Braves. Washington swept both the Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays in three-game road sets.

    Who’s not

MLB: Colorado Rockies – The Rockies have lost six straight heading into Wednesday’s game with the Oakland A’s. Colorado has allowed 52 runs in that span, an average of 8.7 a night. Needless to say, the Rockies have played over in four of those six outings.

EURO: Ireland – The Irish haven’t had much luck versus Spain in international competition. They’re 4-13-7 all-time against the defending Euro and World Cup champs and are +1,200 long shots in Group C play Thursday.

    Key stat

0-7-2 – The Tampa Bay Rays are 0-7-2 over/under in Jeremy Hellickson’s last nine starts. The Rays host the New York Mets in interleague action Thursday.

Injury that should not be overlooked

Kyle Drabek, Toronto Blue Jays – Drabek told reporters he felt popping in his right elbow before leaving Wednesday’s game against Washington after 4 1-3 innings. Drabek isn’t a big-name pitcher but he is the second Jays starter to leave a game with an injury in the past two days. Fellow starter Brandon Morrow hit the 15-day DL with a strained left oblique Wednesday, leaving Toronto to dig extra deep into their minor league reserves.

    Game of the Day

Miami Heat at Oklahoma City Thunder (-5.5, 195.5)

    Notable quotable

“We’re going to have to have more guys in there to give me and D-Wade a rest” – Heat forward LeBron James. The Heat had six played log all but 12:13 of floor time in Game 1 of the NBA Finals, getting worn down by the Thunder in the fourth quarter.

    Notes and tips

-- Spain manager Vicente Del Bosque is expected to roll out his striker-less 4-6-0 setup against Ireland Thursday. The unorthodox formation has left star Fernando Torres to come off the bench for the defending champs.

-- Teams that win Game 1 of the NBA Finals go on to win the series – and the championship – 72.3 percent of the time (47-18). Oklahoma City is a -280 series favorite over Miami, which is priced at +240. Only three teams in NBA history have come back from a 2-0 hole in the finals.

-- The Phillies have struggled against the American League, going just 1-5 in their last six interleague games heading into Wednesday’s game with Minnesota. The Twins, on the other hand, welcome National League opposition. They’re a solid 9-3 in their last 11 interleague matchups and 43-15 in their last 58 interleague home games.

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Happy Armadillo Day, everyone......

      13) Its no big surprise that six of the top eight spenders in college football recruiting reside in the SEC, the most cutthroat of all college football conferences.

Recruiting is the lifeline of any program, so when you see that Tennessee spent $2.53M on recruiting over the last two years, it looks ridiculous, then you realize their stadium seats around 105,000 people and if they don’t win (and they haven’t been lately) they’re not going to fill that stadium, and the revenue lost is a hell of a lot more than $2.53M.

So money spent on recruiting is money well-spent, as long as you get really good players.

      12) Tennessee has to spend more because their state isn’t stocked with a ton of football talent; schools in the football hotbeds of Texas/Florida/ Ohio/California don’t have to travel as much to recruit, so their expenses are going to be lower.

      11) According to espn.com, Arizona’s football program made a $25M profit LY. Arizona!!!! They’re not even that good.

      10) Guy named Randy Ohel won $145,247 and a bracelet at the World Series of Poker this week; what made it unusual is that once Ohel and his opponent got down to head-to-head play, they went at it for another six hours before Ohel emerged the winner. Imagine playing two-handed poker for six hours??? ESPN’s people should have fun editing that down to an hour program.

      9) Winds are supposed to be 30-40 mph at Olympic Thursday, for the first round of the US Open; in other words, like a typical Giants game used to be at Candlestick Park.

      8) Ratings for Game 1 of the NBA Finals were 10% higher Wednesday than they were for Game 1 LY; not sure why, it’s the same Miami team, and Dallas had Dirk Nowitzki, a big star. Why are the this year’s Thunder more popular than Dallas was? Good for them, just don’t understand why.

      7) Of the 44 pitchers who’ve gone 9+ innings in a major league game this year, only 13 allowed a run in that game.

      6) Clay Buchholz was 4-2, 8.21 in his first nine starts; Red Sox scored 67 runs (7.4 rpg) in those nine games. Since then, he is 3-0, 1.45 with Boston giving him 19 runs (4.75 rpg) in those four games.

      5) 44 pitchers have gone 9+ innings in the majors this year; those 44 are 41-0, 0.41 in that start. In their next start, they’re 17-13, 3.31, with over 20-16 in those games.

      4) In the next start after that, they’re just 7-16, 5.89; over is 23-8-2 in those games, which is a strong figure.

      3) Third start out from their complete game, pitchers are 10-10, 5.00, with over 15-11.

All in all, that’s 34-39 in the three starts after tossing a complete games, with a 4.57 RA.

      2) It sounds odd, but RA Dickey might be the best pitcher in baseball; he's set a Mets record with 32.1 consecutive scoreless IP. Thats a franchise that had Seaver-Gooden-Ryan-Santana-Fernandez-Matlack-Cone-Koosman. If you own a Mets' pitching record, thats a serious record.

      1) Today is a lot of things; its Thursday, its June 14, its Flag Day, its our friend Big Dawg’s birthday, but in this space, June 14 is best known as Armadillo Day, in this case, the 11th birthday for this very website.

Thanks for reading; hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoy writing it. Can’t believe I’ve been doing this for 11 years already; time flies when you’re having fun.

        Miami at Oklahoma City
The Thunder look to follow up their 105-94 win in Game 1 and build on their 7-0 ATS record in their last 7 games after scoring 100 points or more in the previous game. Oklahoma City is the pick (-5 1/2) according to Dunkel, which has the Thunder favored by 7 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Oklahoma City (-5 1/2). Here are all of today's picks

Miami @ Oklahoma City (1-0)-- Thunder bench was +17 in 71:00 on floor in game 1; Collison had 10 boards in 21:00, five on offensive end, as Miami's bench was -19 in only 46:00 on floor. Collison was +13 in his 21:00. Home side won all three series meetings this year, with Heat losing by 16-11 in two visits here. Old hand Derek Fisher has won five rings; he had a steadying hand when Miami was up double digits in first half. Oklahoma City is 9-0 at home in playoffs (6-3 vs spread); to me, the key for them is Westbrook being a facilitator and making sure Durant has the ball in key spots. Miami will give a better effort here, its natural after losing Game 1, but Oklahoma City has more good players, it could be as simple as that. Six of last seven Miami games went over the total.

Heat at Thunder Game 2: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miami Heat at Oklahoma City Thunder (-5.5, 196)

        THE STORY:
The Miami Heat and Oklahoma City Thunder gave fans exactly what they were expecting in the opener of the NBA Finals: an action-packed, end-to-end game featuring sensational plays at both ends. Kevin Durant emerged as the hero in Game 1 and will look to lead the Thunder to victory in the second game of the best-of-seven Thursday night. Durant poured in 17 of his game-high 36 points in the fourth quarter as the Thunder rallied from 13 points down to secure the victory.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, ABC, TSN

ABOUT THE HEAT: LeBron James didn't have the kind of game that lifted Miami to victories over Boston in Games 6 and 7 of the East finals, but he was still solid in defeat. James reached the 30-point plateau in a Finals contest for the first time in his career, but it wasn't enough as he fell to 2-9 all-time in championship games. The Heat were badly outscored in transition and had no answer for Durant, who knocked down one shot after another in the pivotal final frame. James credited Oklahoma City with playing near-perfect basketball over the final 12 minutes. "They didn't make many mistakes in the fourth quarter," he said.

ABOUT THE THUNDER: Oklahoma City looked nervous in the early going, but didn't take long to shake off the jitters. Durant became the fourth-youngest player in NBA history to surpass the 35-point plateau in a Finals game, knocking down four 3-pointers and adding eight rebounds. He had plenty of help - particularly from point guard Russell Westbrook, who scored 27 points and added 11 assists and eight rebounds. The two of them outscored the Heat 41-40 in the second half. Thabo Sefolosha excelled on the defensive end, limiting James to seven points on 29 percent shooting when he was guarding him.

        BUZZER BEATERS:

        1. Westbrook became the first player to record 25 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds in a Finals game since Charles Barkley accomplished the feat for the Phoenix Suns in 1993.

        2. Going into this season, the team that wins the opening game of the Finals has gone on to claim the NBA championship 72 percent of the time.

        3. Oklahoma City is 9-0 at home in the postseason.

        TRENDS:

Heat are 6-14 ATS in their last 20 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of greater than .600.

Heat are 0-7-1 ATS in their last 8 games as an underdog.

Thunder are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 games as a favorite.

Thunder are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 home games.

Over is 6-1 in Heat last 7 overall.

Over is 11-2 in Thunder last 13 games as a favorite.

        PREDICTION: Thunder 102, Heat 98.

Series won-lost records are now below the daily writeup.......

AL teams were 8-6 again Wednesday, they're 64-52 against NL teams in interleague play this season.

Remember there are DHs in games in American League parks, no DHs in National League parks. It doesn't seem to affect totals either way.

-- Zito is 2-1, 2.53 in his last three starts.
-- Leake is 2-0, 3.15 in his last four starts.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thursday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Streaking

                Scott Diamond (5-1, 1.61 ERA)

There isn’t a lot to like about this year’s Twins if you’re a Minnesota baseball fan. But the Twinkies might have stumbled into a gem in Scott Diamond. The former Rule 5 pick is a soft-tosser who keeps the ball low in the zone and induces a lot of ground balls.

Minnesota, which is 10 games under .500, is 6-1 in Diamond’s seven starts this season. And because the Twins are so bad, you’re going to get a good price with the young lefty on the mound.

                Shaun Marcum (5-3, 3.50 ERA)

Marcum isn’t making any Brewers fans forget about that kid Brett Lawrie in Toronto. That said, the former Blue Jay pitcher is on a nice little streak right now. Marcum is 3-0 with a 2.29 ERA over his last three starts and 23 strikeouts in 19 1/3 innings.

                Slumping

                Joe Blanton (5-6, 5.40 ERA)

Remember when Blanton was no ordinary Joe for the Phillies at the beginning of the season? He carried a 2.81 ERA over his seven starts. That seems like a loooong time ago.

Blanton has given up five or more earned runs in each of his last five trips to the bump.

                Gavin Floyd (4-6, 5.38 ERA)

You’ve got to think Floyd would have lost his spot in the rotation by now if the White Sox had an arm ready to step up. He hasn’t had a good outing since the second week of May and owes a 10.52 ERA over his last five starts.

                So there’s that.

-- Lets be realistic; no-hitters aren't that big a deal anymore.

-- Ted Barrett is first umpire to work two perfect games behind the plate.

-- Matt Cain is now 64-9 when the Giants give him 3+ runs.

-- Nate Eovaldi has pitched pretty well for the Dodgers, but LA scored a total of four runs in his four starts.

-- Pretty cool that the LA Kings had the Stanley Cup on the field before the game at Dodger Stadium, posing for pictures with both teams.

-- Alvaro Quiros had a hole-in-one on the 288-yard, par-4 7th hole during a practice round Wednesday. Its an uphill, 288-yard hole.
