Predators, Flyers Eye Friday Night Close Out Contests

In a Stanley Cup playoff season that can best be described as bizarre to date, we wonder if we have only scratched the surface, and that more odd developments could be on the horizon. That would include a pair of teams looking to rally back from 0-3 playoff deficits for just the fourth time in NHL history.

In another future update, we’ll get to one of those in the Western Conference where Vancouver hosts Los Angeles in Game 5 on Sunday at Rogers Arena, as the Canucks look to continue that climb against the Kings. On Friday night, however, the ongoing trek from 0-3 focuses on Pittsburgh where the Penguins host Philadelphia in Game 5 at Consol Energy Center. The Pens kept alive and avoided the sweep with an emphatic 10-3 win in Wednesday’s Game 4.

They’ll drop the puck Friday at 7:30 p.m. (ET), with TV coverage provided by NBC Sports Channel. A check with the Don Best odds screen notes Pittsburgh at -180 on the win at the majority of Las Vegas wagering outlets, with the take-back on the Flyers hovering around +165. Puck Line prices show the Pens mostly at +165 when laying the extra goal, with Philly at -185 or thereabouts plus a goal.

It’s the total that has opened most eyes, however; as expected, oddsmakers have been forced to post a 7, slightly shaded to the “under” at -110, for Game 5.

A 7-goal total is rare, but wholly justified for a series that has more resembled NHL All-Star Game scorelines than traditional Stanley Cup playoff action. Through four games, a staggering 45 goals have been scored; over the last three games, that total is a hard-to-comprehend 38 goals. The combination of wide-open play, plenty of goal scorers, poor defense and goaltending has contributed to the unique offensive fireworks we have thus far witnessed in each game of this wild series.

This is also now the highest-scoring Stanley Cup series, through four games, in NHL history, exceeding by one goal the shootouts between Wayne Gretzky’s Edmonton Oilers and the Chicago Blackhawks from way back in 1985.

Leads are also risky in this series, as the winning side has come from behind in each of the first four games. Pittsburgh is also due to get high-scoring winger James Neal and another winger, Craig Adams, back from suspension for Game 5. Physical winger Arron Asham, however, still has three games remaining on his suspension for roughhouse antics in Game 3.

Pittsburgh might have reason to be encouraged after Game 4, mainly because goalie Marc-Andre Fleury finally asserted himself over the final two periods Wednesday night. MVP candidate Evgeni Malkin, after a slow start in the series, finally scored his first goal in the postseason in the 10-3 romp, which set a Penguins franchise record for playoff goals.

The Flyers are not too concerned about the trip to the new Igloo, where they’ve won seven of eight visits since it opener a year ago. But what might worry coach Peter Laviolette is the meltdown suffered by GK Ilya Bryzgalov in Game 4. Backup Sergei Bobrovsky does not appear to be a better option after getting shelled himself when Bryzgalov was pulled in the Pittsburgh onslaught at Wells Fargo Center.

Meanwhile, much like Pittsburgh, Detroit is facing a close-out game on Friday night in Nashville against the now-confident Predators, fresh off a pair of grinding wins at Joe Louis Arena. Consultation with the Don Best odds screen notes Nashville priced mostly between -130 and -135 on the win at various Las Vegas wagering outlets, with the take-back on the Red Wings hovering between +110 and +115.

The 5-goal total is shaded to the 'over,' priced roughly at -135; note that there have been five goals scored in three of the first four games of this series, with four goals scored in the other in a recurring pace and flow to proceedings.

For those interested in Puck Line prices, the Preds are being quoted as high as +240 when laying the extra goal, with Detroit laying between -275 and -290 when receiving the extra goal. Face-off time at Bridgestone Arena will be 8:00 p.m. (ET), with TV coverage provided by CNBC.

Nashville, which prior to this season had won just one playoff series in its existence since entering the league as an expansion franchise in 1998, is on the precipice of advancing to the second round, based largely upon solid defense and superb goaltending from the big Fin, Pekka Rinne, who has proven difficult for the Wings to solve. Rinne, who has pulled yeoman duty this season, appreciated the extra day off between Games 4 and 5, and has stopped at least 35 Detroit shots in each game of this series. Thus far, Rinne has stopped 130 of 138 shots vs. the Wings for a sold .942 save mark.

Rinne, who notched an NHL-high 43 wins for goalies this term, remains the key to Nashville’s advancement. But he is certainly not the only element that has been giving the Red Wings fits, as coach Barry “The Vampire” Trotz’ famed trapping defense continues to muck up proceedings at mid-ice and prevent Detroit from crossing the blue line with any manpower advantages.

The Preds are getting real contributions from late-season additions Andrei Kostitsyn and Alexander Radulov, each flanking David Legwand in Trotz’ number one line. Secondary scoring options, however, have come in handy for the Preds in this series, especially from winger Gabriel Bourque, a member of the fourth line along with Nick Spaling and Patrick Hornqvist and already having scored three goals.

No one has similarly risen in this series for the Wings, who continue to bear little resemblance to the side that once won 23 straight games at home this season. With that home-ice edge having been shattered in this round, Detroit looks in serious trouble and might not return to Motown for Game 6unless GK Jimmy Howard, who has been outplayed by Rinne in this series, rises up with a big effort.

        Canucks on the brink

        April 18, 2012

Will Canucks Coach Alain Vigneault Be Fired?

For the past two seasons, the Vancouver Canucks have been one of the National Hockey League's most successful organizations. They've won back-to-back Presidents' Trophies for finishing first overall in the league and went to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals in 2010-11.

But this year, things have taken an awful turn. The Canucks fell into a deep hole into their Western Conference quarterfinal matchup with the Los Angeles Kings and are one game away from being swept out of the playoffs. If they are swept, the Canucks will become the first-ever Presidents' Trophy winner to lose in four straight games to make the playoffs - failing to win a single postseason game - and if that happens, head coach Alain Vigneault could be out of a job.

In light of this, Bovada's online sportsbook has compiled a set of unique futures bets regarding the future of Vancouver's head coach. Let's take a look...

20% Sports Welcome Bonus: Sign up now at Bovada and deposit for your 20% Free Bet Bonus.

Will Alain Vigneault be the head coach of the Canucks for game 1 of the 2012-13 Regular Season?

        Yes -250 No +170

Here's what we know about Vigneault. He's won the Jack Adams Trophy (awarded annually to the NHL's best coach) once, and was nominated for it another time. He's won the two aforementioned Presidents' Trophies - the first and only two in Canucks history - and has more regular season and playoff wins than any coach in the franchise's existence. So, it's fair to say he's the best coach the Canucks have ever had.

That said, numbers do work against him. The old adage states that coaches are hired to be fired, and this year was a pretty good example of that as eight head coaches were turfed: Ron Wilson was fired in Toronto, Scott Arniel in Columbus, Bruce Boudreau in Washington, Davis Payne in St. Louis, Jacques Martin in Montreal, Paul Maurice in Carolina, Randy Carlyle in Anaheim and Terry Murray in Los Angeles. That's nearly 1/3rd of all NHL coaches being flipped over in a single calendar year.

And this is where Vigneault's tenure comes into play. Only three current NHL bench bosses have been with their teams longer than Vigneault's been with the Canucks (he's been in Vancouver since 2006 - Mike Babcock's been in Detroit since 2005, Barry Trotz and Lindy Ruff in Nashville and Buffalo since 1997.) Some would say that should grant Vigneault extra time to sort out what's been a disastrous playoff run in Vancouver, while others say his shelf life has expired and he's been around too long - that players are tuning him out and his motivational techniques no longer work.

So, will Vigneault make it through this playoff run? Will the Canucks rally to save his job? Or is his fate essentially sealed? There are plenty of questions being asked but not a lot of answers right now - only time will tell if he's back in Vancouver for the fall.

Five Games Fill Saturday NHL Betting Slate

By: Michael Robinson | Friday, April 20, 2012

The NHL playoffs reach a crescendo on Saturday with five big games, including Phoenix and St. Louis looking to close out their series at home.

Let’s first update the Friday odds with Pittsburgh a big 200 favorite at home against Philly, but trailing 3-1 in the series. The total is a humungous seven, but that may be the safest bet on the board with an average of 12.7 goals scored in the last three games.

Nashville (-130) hosts Detroit on Friday and looks to end that series. The total is five. There appears to be a changing of the guard as the old Red Wings would have never lost two straight at home like they did in Games 3 and 4.

Saturday action starts at 3:00 p.m. (ET) with Washington at Boston (-185). The total is five and shaded to the ‘over.’ The series is tied 2-2 and the defending champs need a lot more production from their top-6 forwards as they have been held to one goal in three of the games.

New Jersey is at Florida and also tied 2-2. The Devils are -115 favorites after a 4-0 home shutout last game. Martin Brodeur stopped all 26 shots he faced, but the future Hall-of-Famer is not consistent by any means at this late stage of his career.

Ottawa is at the New York Rangers (-175) and this series has been a surprise knotted at 2-2. The total is five and shaded to the ‘over.’ Don Best hockey analyst Benjie C. believes the Rangers have been in control most of the time and the bounces have held them back.

St. Louis (-185) looks to send the San Jose Sharks to an early vacation. The total is five and shaded to the ‘under.’ The Blues have won the last three games, including the last two on the road, after dropping Game 1 in overtime. The Sharks are terrible on the penalty kill and we’ll see how much ‘bite’ they have left in the hostile environment.

We end Saturday with a 10:00 p.m. (ET) affair between Phoenix (-135) and Chicago. The total is five and shaded to the ‘over.’ The series returns to the desert with the Coyotes leading 3-1. All four of the games have incredibly gone into overtime, three of them with a 3-2 score. Chicago goalie Corey Crawford could be pulled in favor of Ray Emery.

Peeking ahead to Sunday, Vancouver gets to return home to face the Kings after warding off a sweep last game in Los Angeles. The Canucks are -175 favorites which is a little high for Don Best’s Brian Blessing. The total is five and shaded significantly to the ‘under.’

The extra day rest will help Daniel Sedin clear his head even more after returning last game and Benjie C. likes this series to head back to Socal.

Two Game 7's Close NHL Conference Quarters On Thursday

There’s nothing more exciting than Game 7s in the NHL playoffs and we have three of them. Two will come on a tremendous Thursday night, highlighted by the clash between the New York Rangers and Ottawa Senators.

Let’s first start with Wednesday’s battle of Washington at Boston. This game opened with Boston -200 and a total of five (shaded to the ‘under.’). Don Best Sports analyst Brian Blessing believed the Bruins were way overvalued at those odds and they’re now down to 170-175 favorites in most shops.

This series has been as close as it gets with all games decided by one goal (three in OT). The road team has won four of the six games, with the Caps taking Games 2 and 5 in Beantown. Boston does have plenty of experience in Game 7s from their title run last year, but nothing in this series has shown that one team is better than the other.

Goaltending is always a big focus in a game like this. Tim Thomas is the veteran with the great pedigree, but Braden Holtby has more than matched him this series and a lot of the wagering public is questioning how much of an edge Boston has in goal tonight.

New Jersey (-125) at Florida is the second Thursday game at 8:30 p.m. (ET). New Jersey survived with a 3-2 OT home win on Tuesday, although Florida goalie Scott Clemmensen (39 saves) gave a valiant effort. Blessing believes that New Jersey is the better overall team, but Marty Brodeur is really fighting the puck and must play much better.

Ottawa is at the New York Rangers at 7:00 p.m. (ET). The home team is the solid -170 favorite with a total of five (shaded to the ‘under.’). Henrik Lundqvist is an absolute beast in goal for the Rangers and Blessing believes there is a lot more value with them at -170, compared to Boston at the same odds.

Ottawa backers will point to the fact that their team has won two of three at Madison Square Garden this series. Craig Anderson has also surprised a lot of people with his play in net and he had a 2-0 shutout the last time he played here on Saturday night, stopping all 41 shots he faced.

The speed of the Senators has also kept the Rangers off balance and they’ll try to do it again on the biggest stage.

#1 seed Rangers host Senators in Game 7 Thursday

                            No. 8 OTTAWA SENATORS

Eastern Conference Quarterfinals - Game 7, Series Tied 3-3
                            Thursday, 7:00 p.m. EDT
Line: New York -170, Ottawa +150, Total: 5

The New York Rangers look to avoid becoming the second No. 1 seed to exit this year’s Stanley Cup Playoffs in the first round when they host the Ottawa Senators in a decisive Game 7 on Thursday night at Madison Square Garden.

Since the NHL switched to the current playoff format in 1994, 10 top-seeded teams have lost in the first round, including Vancouver this year, which fell to Los Angeles in five games. If the Rangers lose on Thursday though, it will mark the first time in NHL history that both one-seeds lose in the first round in the same season. This series is difficult to gauge because, in almost every game, it seems as if the better team lost. Amazingly, the team with the higher number of shots on goal in each game has lost all but once in this series (Senators won Game 2, 3-2 in overtime). Each squad has shut out the other on the road (Rangers won 1-0 in Game 3, Senators won 2-0 in Game 5) and with just 24 combined goals through six games, this is the lowest scoring series in the Eastern Conference. History is not on Ottawa’s side—the Senators are 0-4 all-time in Game 7’s—but the Senators have not faced this situation since 2004. The Rangers have played in just one Game 7 since 1994 (a 2-1 loss to the Capitals in 2009), but are 3-0 all-time in Game 7’s at The Garden. If you followed StatFox’s prediction for this series (Rangers), the line presents a nice opportunity to hedge on the Senators at plus-money, but the safer bet in this game is on the UNDER 5 (-125). Most Game 7’s are low-scoring due to the high-pressure nature of the situation, and with both teams getting exceptional goaltending all series, expect that to continue on Thursday.

This FoxSheets trend also likes the Under:

N.Y. RANGERS are 25-13 UNDER (65.8%, +11.2 Units) in home games after 2 or more consecutive unders over the last 2 seasons. The average score was N.Y. RANGERS 2.7, OPPONENT 2.2 - (Rating = 1*).

Senators C Jason Spezza led the team in points in the regular season with 34 goals and 50 assists, and the 28-year-old pivot is doing an excellent job shouldering the load in the postseason with a team-high five points (3 G, 2 A). Ottawa could certainly use more production from its second best scorer though—21-year-old puck-moving defenseman Erik Karlsson (19 G, 59 A). The Swedish blueliner led all NHL defensemen in points by an incredibly wide margin (25), but the Rangers have done an excellent job of keeping Karlsson in check this series, limiting him to just one goal in six games.

Despite taking a 3-2 series lead into Game 6, the Sens were unable to close it out on home ice on Monday, falling 3-2. Captain Daniel Alfredsson returned to the lineup after missing Games 3, 4 and 5 with a concussion, but Ottawa lacked discipline and the Rangers capitalized on those mistakes to force the series back to New York.

Rangers top-line C Brad Richards leads the team in points in this series (2 G, 3 A) after signing with the Blueshirts over the summer as the top free agent in the league. General Manager Glen Sather brought him in specifically to bolster the Rangers’ offensive depth for the postseason, and the 31-year-old veteran is playing exceptionally well. Interestingly, Richards won a Cup in 2004 as a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning—coached by current New York bench boss John Tortorella.

The fate of the Rangers ultimately falls on the shoulders of Vezina Trophy-finalist Henrik Lundqvist. The Swedish netminder has posted an impressive .942 SV Pct. in six games, and is the unquestioned most valuable player for the Blueshirts. If the Rangers expect to win this game, they will need a terrific game from their go-to guy between the pipes.

The Florida Panthers look to win their first playoff series since 1996 when they host the New Jersey Devils for a pivotal Game 7 in Sunrise on Thursday night.

The Devils were heavy favorites at the start of this series (-200) despite having the lower seed, but the Panthers have silenced many critics pushing this series to seven games. Actually, it was the Devils who pushed it to Game 7, thanks to Travis Zajac’s overtime winner in Game 6 on Tuesday night with New Jersey on the brink of elimination. The home team has won three straight in this series, and four of six overall. And while the Stanley Cup Playoffs are typically marked by tight checking and low scoring, this series has bucked the trend. In each of the first five games, a team held a 3-0 lead. Game 6 came close to mimicking this obscure trend, with the Devils blowing a 2-0 lead before winning 3-2 in overtime. Both teams seem content to play a fast break style and score on the rush, and the Panthers have been successful by rolling four lines and tiring the Devils out with their depth. The problem is, Florida is playing with fire trying to win that way against a New Jersey team with snipers like Zach Parise and Ilya Kovalchuk. The Devils haven’t made it into the second round since 2007—a long wait for a team accustomed to success. Look for the veteran presence of future Hall of Famer Martin Brodeur to be the difference as NEW JERSEY pulls out the series on the road.

This FoxSheets trend also likes the Devils:

NEW JERSEY is 17-8 ATS (68.0%, +8.9 Units) off a home win this season. The average score was NEW JERSEY 2.7, OPPONENT 2.2 - (Rating = 2*).

The Panthers have used their size and speed to frustrate the Devils, who have relied heavily on their top two lines for offensive production—Parise, Kovalchuk and Zajac have combined for eight of the 15 goals scored by New Jersey in this series. The Cats, on the other hand, have gotten great production from grinders like Sean Bergenheim, who is tied for the team lead in points with three goals and two assists.

The Panthers could be without two key players in their lineup for this game. Starting G Jose Theodore (2-1, .912 SV Pct., 1 SO) is day-to-day with an undisclosed injury and key defenseman Jason Garrison (1 G, 1 A in 3 games) is also questionable with a lower body injury. Both players missed Game 6, and Florida may have to turn to No. 2 goalie Scott Clemmensen. The former Devil backup has allowed seven combined goals in his past two starts in this series—both losses.

The Devils desperately need to get some help from their depth forwards. Rookie C Adam Henrique (16 G, 35 A) and trade deadline acquisition Alexei Ponikarovsky (14 G, 19 A) have been held to one assist each. If secondary scorers can get going Jersey, it could finally put them over the top in this series.
