Ice picks: Thursday’s best NHL bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Penguins at New York Rangers (N/A)

Sidney Crosby is finally ready to suit up for the Pittsburgh Penguins, giving a club a huge boost as it tries to catch the New York Rangers at the top of the Eastern Conference.

While it’s great news for Penguins supporters, it’s not like they were headed to the poor house without No. 87. The Penguins have won nine straight games, the most recent of which was an impressive 5-2 win over the Boston Bruins.

Crosby went off for four points in his first game of the year back in November, but only played eight games before being sidelined with more concussion/neck problems.

"Actually, you know what, I probably feel a little bit better (than in November), just knowing what to expect," Crosby told reporters. "I think it's just easier going through it this time ... that first game was pretty overwhelming, and it was a lot of fun, but that being said I'm going to take it a little more in stride this time, and make sure I'm getting better every game, but also pace myself a little bit, especially with this schedule.”

Easing Crosby into the mix is a lot easier said than done. He'll show up on this big stage.

        Pick: Penguins

St. Louis Blues at Carolina Hurricanes (+135, 5)

The Blues’ five-game winning streak came to an abrupt stop in a shootout loss to Chicago Tuesday. St. Louis is a resilient team and has lost back-to-back games only twice since the New Year. It makes the third stop of a seven-game road trip in Carolina.

The Hurricanes are back home after a road run of their own, going 2-2-1 in that span. Carolina and St. Louis have split their last 10 meetings, going back to 2002.

The Blues blew a 3-1 lead against the Blackhawks, marking the first time this season they’ve failed to win when scoring three or more goals (36-0-1). St. Louis also watched its streak of 51 penalties killed end after taking some undisciplined whistles in the final two periods.

They won’t be that sloppy two games in a row.

        Pick: Under
