  • Kansas takes on short-handed UNC Sunday

    KANSAS JAYHAWKS (30-6)

vs. NORTH CAROLINA TAR HEELS (32-5)

    NCAA Tournament - Elite Eight
    Tip-off: Sunday, 5:05 p.m. EDT – St. Louis, MO
    Line: Kansas -2½, Total: 143½

Second-seeded Kansas enters its elite matchup against top-seeded North Carolina as a slight favorite with the questionable status of Kendall Marshall’s wrist leaving the Tar Heels in flux.

This game could come down to the big men. Kansas has one of the nation’s best rebounders in Thomas Robinson, who is averaging 13.7 RPG in the tournament. But Tar Heels C Tyler Zeller put up a 20-point, 22-rebound effort against Ohio. Which storied program will reach the Final Four? For the answer, check out the College Basketball Pass for picks covering all the big games in college basketball each weekday.

Robinson (17.7 PPG, 11.9 RPG) and Tyshawn Taylor (16.6 PPG, 4.7 APG) are the primary scoring threats for the Jayhawks. Kansas beat the Wolfpack in the Sweet 16 even though Taylor shot just 2-of-14 from the field. He has been cold the entire tournament (8.7 PPG on 33% FG), but is bound to pick it up again (48% FG on season) and has found other ways to contribute with five assists, three steals and 10 boards against NC State. Junior G Elijah Johnson (10.0 PPG, 3.6 APG) has had a great tournament, hitting 60% of his shots, including 7-of-15 threes. But, the true X-factor could be Withey—if he can play with the same type of presence as he did Friday, Zeller and 6-foot-11 John Henson will have trouble getting any close shots, which will severely limit the North Carolina offense. This four-star FoxSheets trend also sides with the Jayhawks:

NORTH CAROLINA is 1-11 ATS (-11.1 Units) in road games when playing with one or less days rest over the last 2 seasons. The average score was N CAROLINA 75.5, OPPONENT 75.9 - (Rating = 4*).

It appears that Marshall will not play Sunday, which is bad news for the Tar Heels, even though scrappy backup guard Stilman White played admirably in his absence. Although White only scored two points, he played 32 minutes at point guard with six assists and zero turnovers. Still, without Marshall, the offense is slower and committed 24 turnovers in the near-loss to Ohio on Friday. North Carolina cannot just rely on outscoring a team to win.

ACC Defensive Player of the Year John Henson (13.8 PPG, 10.1 RPG) will need to shut down Robinson while ACC Player of the Year Tyler Zeller (16.5 PPG, 9.7 RPG) will need to avoid getting shut down by Withey. And, the real key for North Carolina coming out on top is arguably the most talented player in the game, Harrison Barnes, showing his true colors. Barnes (17.2 PPG) was just 3-of-16 FG with five turnovers against Ohio, even though he had size advantages the entire game. He needs to play and shoot better than that if Roy Williams’ team is going to make it to the Final Four. This three-star FoxSheets trend also likes the Heels to win Sunday.

KANSAS is 2-11 ATS (15.4%, -10.1 Units) when the total is 140 to 149.5 this season. The average score was KANSAS 71.7, OPPONENT 69.1 - (Rating = 3*).

    • No. 1 Kentucky takes on Baylor in Elite 8 Sunday

      BAYLOR BEARS (30-7)

      vs. KENTUCKY WILDCATS (35-2)

      NCAA Tournament - Elite Eight
      Tip-off: Sunday, 2:20 p.m. EDT – Atlanta, GA
      Line: Kentucky -7½, Total: 147½

After No. 1 Kentucky eclipsed 100 points on fourth-seeded Indiana to reach the Elite Eight, it will look to keep up its hot shooting and advance to the Final Four with a win over Baylor on Sunday afternoon.

Baylor is one of the few teams in the nation that can match up in a size battle with the Wildcats. With three elite big men in 6-foot-11 Perry Jones III, 6-foot-9 Quincy Miller and 6-foot-7 Quincy Acy, the Bears will be able to stand up to Kentucky’s NBA-like size. But the Wildcats just dropped 102 on Indiana and are averaging 90.0 PPG in the NCAA Tournament. Can the Bears give top-seeded Kentucky a real scare? For the answer, check out the College Basketball Pass for picks covering all the big games in college basketball each weekday.

Led by Jackson (13.6 PPG, 5.9 APG) offensively, the Baylor offense and its four other double-digit scorers have no problem lighting up a scoreboard. Although Jackson can often be sloppy with the ball (3.5 TPG), he’s made up for it with air-tight defense in the tournament, registering 3.0 SPG so far in tourney play. The deep frontcourt of Jones III (13.4 PPG, 7.6 RPG), Acy (11.7 PPG, 7.4 RPG) and Miller (10.8 PPG, 4.9 RPG) have the athleticism and talent to make Kentucky’s defense work all over the court, while SG Brady Heslip (10.4 PPG) has the ability to beat teams from deep. Heslip (2.7 3PG) has been on fire in the NCAA Tournament with 5.0 threes per game on 60% shooting from deep. This three-star FoxSheets trend also sides with the Bears:

KENTUCKY is 2-11 ATS (-10.1 Units) after 3 consecutive non-conference games this season. The average score was KENTUCKY 81.0, OPPONENT 59.5 - (Rating = 3*).

Although the Bears may have some size, the Wildcats feature the best post player in the game in Anthony Davis who is a menace offensively and defensively. The 6-foot-10 freshman (14.2 PPG, 10.1 RPG, 4.6 BPG) has registered double-digit boards in six of his past seven games and is absurdly efficient from the field, making 63.2% of his shots. Fellow freshman Michael Kidd-Gilchrist led the Wildcats over Indiana with a 24-point, 10-rebound performance while 6-foot-9 forward Terrence Jones also chipped in with 12 points. Doron Lamb (13.6 PPG, 1.9 3PG) is the team’s best scorer from the backcourt, and Darius Miller (10.0 PPG) and Teague (10.0 PPG, 4.9 APG) contribute from deep as well. The trio of guards combined for 54 points on 16-of-32 FG in Friday’s win. If Teague can play strong defense on Jackson, it will make this win a lot easier for the Wildcats, but that has proven to be difficult for any opponent thus far in the tournament. This FoxSheets coaching trend also likes the Wildcats to win comfortably on Sunday:

Scott Drew is 3-13 ATS (-11.3 Units) versus excellent ball handling teams - committing <=12 turnovers/game after 15+ games as the coach of BAYLOR. The average score was BAYLOR 70.4, OPPONENT 72.5 - (Rating = 2*).

      • Baylor vs. Kentucky

        March 25, 2012

Two more berths to the Final Four in New Orleans next weekend will be handed out Sunday. The first game will take place at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, where top-seeded Kentucky (35-2 straight up, 14-21-1 against the spread) will take on No. 3 seed Baylor.

As of early Saturday night, most books had UK favored by either 7 ½ or eight with a total of 147 ½. Gamblers can take the Bears to pull the outright upset for a generous plus-300 payout (risk $100 to win $300).

John Calipari’s team advanced the Elite Eight by avenging a regular-season loss at Indiana in Friday’s 102-90 win as a 10-point ‘chalk.’ With Anthony Davis saddled with foul trouble that limited him to 25 minutes of playing time, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist led the way with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Doron Lamb and Darius Miller added 21 and 19 points, respectively.

Davis finished with nine points, 12 boards and three blocked shots. Marquis Teague scored 14 points and dished out seven assists and Terrence Jones was also in double figures with 12 points.

Baylor (30-7 SU, 14-16 ATS) is in the Elite Eight for the second time in three years thanks to Friday’s 75-70 South Region semifinals win over Xavier. However, the Bears blew the cover for their backers with lackluster play down the stretch.

Scott Drew’s team raced out to a 22-4 lead by the under-12 television timeout and it led by 13 at halftime. But Tu Holloway’s 3-pointer with 21 seconds remaining pulled Xavier to within three at 71-68 and basically clinched the spread cover for those who took the Musketeers as underdogs.

Quincy Acy dominated the lane with 20 points and 15 rebounds, scoring on a slew of powerful dunks. Pierre Jackson had another double-double with 16 points and 10 assists. In the first three games of the Tournament, Jackson is averaging 16.3 points and 7.3 assists per game.

Perry Jones III was also in double figures with 14 points against Xavier. Brady Haslip wasn’t as spectacular but still had 11 points on 3-of-7 shooting from the field and 1-of-3 from beyond the arc. In the Tournament to date, Heslip has drained 15-of-25 treys at an incredible 60-percent clip.

UK has been a single-digit favorite 10 times, posting a 4-6 spread record. Meanwhile, Baylor has been an underdog nine times, going 5-4 both SU and ATS.

Bettors should keep in mind that in terms of crowd noise, this is basically a home game for Kentucky. The Wildcats have the nation’s most rabid fan base and they are notorious for invading ‘Cat-lanta’ for SEC Tournaments and NCAA Tourney appearances. I was told that even Indiana’s great fans were overwhelmed by the Big Blue Nation in the dome Friday night.

CBS will have the telecast at 2:20 p.m. Eastern.

        • Kansas vs. North Carolina

          March 25, 2012

The last ticket to the Final Four will be handed out Sunday evening when Kansas (30-6 SU, 17-17 ATS) and North Carolina (32-5 SU, 20-16 ATS) meet in the Midwest Regional Final from St. Louis. The two powerhouse programs haven’t met since 2008 when the Jayhawks blasted the Tar Heels 84-66 in the Final Four. Kansas and head coach Bill Self eventually went on to beat Memphis in the Championship one game later.
Fast forward to Sunday’s matchup and most gamblers will be focusing on the status of one player, North Carolina point guard Kendall Marshall. The sophomore injured his wrist in the team’s victory over Creighton in the third round. He sat out Friday’s 73-65 overtime victory against Ohio and his absence was felt.

UNC turned the ball over 24 times without Marshall and the offense (40%) couldn’t find any rhythm at all. To put things in perspective, the Tar Heels turned the ball over 20 times in their first two tournament games. His status is expected to be known after the pregame shootaround but missing 9.6 assists and 7.2 points per game is hard to makeup.

Fortunately, North Carolina still boasts a solid frontcourt in Tyler Zeller and John Henson. Plus they have a NBA-talent in Harrison Barnes, but he hasn’t lived up to his billing in the tournament at all. In three games, he’s put up 14, 17 and 12 points. He was awful against Ohio, shooting 3-of-16 from the field and 2-of-9 from 3-point land.

Size has helped the Tar Heels all season but Kansas has the big men to match UNC. Power forward Thomas Robinson (17.7 PPG, 11.9 RPG) has been beast all season, plus center Jeff Withey (9.1 PPG, 6.2 RPG) takes up a lot of space. Withey had 10 blocks in Kansas’ 60-57 win over N.C. State on Friday and Robinson filled up the stat sheet with 18 points and 15 boards.

“From a matchup standpoint, I see a lot of similarities between Kansas and Florida State, which is notable since the Seminoles beat the Tar Heels twice this season, and that was when UNC was at full strength,” explained VegasInsider.com handicapper Keith Fredrick.

Even though opportunities were there, the Jayhawks failed to cover as eight-point favorites. Kansas couldn’t buy a shot from the outside (1-of-14) and its free-throw shooting (11-of-20) wasn’t much better either.

Looking at both teams, it’s safe to say that Kansas is the more fortunate of the two to be here. The Jayhawks cruised past Detroit (65-50), which was a public ‘dog, in the tournament opener but easily could’ve lost to Purdue (63-60) if it wasn’t for some poor execution by the Boilermakers late in the game. Even against North Carolina State, the Jayhawks looked soft at times and out of place. They were very fortunate to have the Wolfpack shoot only 28.4 percent from the field on Friday. What happens when a team actually knocks down open jumpers?

North Carolina has the ability to push the tempo and create shots but outside of the 87 points it put up against Creighton in the third round, Roy Williams’ team has been out of sync.

Due to the Marshall factor, Kansas opened as a three-point favorite over North Carolina. The line quickly dropped down to 2 and some offshore betting shops have lowered it to 1 ½.

According to VI expert Marc Lawrence, past trends don’t favor Kansas. “The Big 12 has gone 0-10 against the spread in their last 10 appearances in the Elite Eight,” said Lawrence.

Since the line is so short, straight up numbers are far more important here. Then again, North Carolina has five losses on the season and two of them came by exactly one point, setbacks to Kentucky (72-73) and Duke (84-85).

The total on this game opened at 144 and the number has dipped to 143.

Kansas has seen all three of its games in the tournament go ‘under’ the number. North Carolina has produced a 2-1 mark to the ‘under’ and that number could be 3-0 if you got in late on the Creighton game since some books closed at 160.5 (87-73 final). While that could’ve gone the other way, some ‘over’ players are probably still upset that Ohio and UNC only put up 12 points in the extra session, which kept the game ‘under.’

If you’re looking at the ‘over’ in Sunday’s matchup then you need both teams to get 71 points on the board.

          Is it doable?

Absolutely but at the end of the day, totals in basketball are usually determined by 3-pointers made and free throws made. Perfect example is yesterday’s action. Florida and Louisville combined for 14 treys, while Ohio State and Syracuse attempted 67 free throws and they converted 51. Both games went ‘over’ and neither of the two had an up-and-down pace.

The pace should be there on Sunday, especially if Marshall gives it a go. UNC has attempted 65 shots in each of its three tournament games, while Kansas took 62 and 64 in its last two. Against Detroit, the Jayhawks only took 50 shots but they went to the charity stripe 23 times.

Kansas has seen the ‘under’ go 21-12 this season and even more telling, the Jayhawks have seen the ‘under’ go 15-2 outside of Lawrence this season. UNC owns an 18-18 total mark, which includes an 11-8 mark to the ‘over’ on the road.

The winner of this game will meet Ohio State in next week’s Final Four semifinal from New Orleans.

          • Power Sunday In The Elite Eight

College basketball’s Elite Eight has a powerful field on Sunday with all the top seeds playing with the exception of No. 2 Duke.

Three double-digits seeds got eliminated last night in No. 10 Xavier, No. 11 NC State and No. 13 Ohio. The lowest seed remaining overall is No. 7 Florida. A No. 1 seed has won 16 of the 27 championships since the field expanded to 64 in 1985.

We’ve been tracking the March Madness betting statistics all tourney long. The favorites started strong at 25-18-1 (58 percent), but the underdogs have been biting back since, going 11-5 (69 percent), including 6-2 ATS during the Sweet Sixteen.

The ‘under’ is 36-22-2 (62 percent) after a 4-4 mark in the Sweet Sixteen. Note all results are pending Saturday play.

            SOUTH REGIONAL FINAL
            Atlanta, Georgia Dome

            (1) Kentucky Wildcats vs. (3) Baylor Bears
            TIP: 2:20 p.m. (ET) CBS
            SPREAD: Kentucky -7 ½
            TOTAL: 146

This game opened with Kentucky -7 ½ and the total at 146, both remaining steady.

Baylor (30-7 SU, 14-16 ATS) beat Xavier 75-70 as 6 ½-point favorites last night. Xavier did a nice job to fight back after a big early hole. Baylor got 34 total points on 15-of-19 shooting from forwards Perry Jones III and Quincy Acy. Sharpshooting guard Brady Heslip had 11 points after averaging 22 PPG in the first two.

The Bears have gotten some scheduling breaks, especially with Duke losing in the first round in a shocker to Lehigh. The highest seed they’ve faced is No. 10 Xavier, although coach Scott Drew gets a ton of credit for making his second Elite Eight in three years. The 2010 version had a completely different roster and lost to Duke (78-71) in this round.

Kentucky (35-2 SU, 14-21-1 ATS) got the only cover by a favorite on Friday, 102-90 as 10-point ‘chalk’ over No. 4 Indiana. The game was won at the free throw line with the Wildcats getting 37 attempts and knocking down an incredible 35. The ‘over’ is 3-0 for them in the tourney, scoring 90 PPG.

Coach John Calipari has his team in the Elite Eight for the third straight year. He lost in this round two years ago to West Virginia (73-66) before beating North Carolina (76-69) last year. Kentucky then lost a heartbreaker to eventual champion Connecticut (56-55) in the Final Four, and the pressure is on Calipari as he looks for his first national title.

Kentucky is going to copy Xavier’s defensive playbook against Baylor. Namely, don’t double team the big guys and contain Heslip from beyond the arc. Baylor’s big men had very good success against Xavier, but it will be much tougher against Kentucky and shot-blocking center Anthony Davis.

            MIDWEST REGIONAL FINAL
            St. Louis, Edward Jones Dome

            (1) North Carolina Tar Heels vs. (2) Kansas Jayhawks
            TIP: 5:05 p.m. (ET) CBS
            SPREAD: Kansas -2
            TOTAL: 144

North Carolina is a 2-point underdog with the health of Kendall Marshall (wrist) the big reason. Both of these teams lost in the Elite Eight last year, North Carolina to Kentucky and Kansas to upstart VCU (71-61).

UNC (32-5 SU, 20-16 ATS) got all it could handle from No. 13 Ohio last night, needing overtime in the 73-65 win as 10 ½-point favorites. Freshman point guard Stilman White started in place of Marshall and while he had no turnovers in 32 minutes, the rest of the team seemed rattled with 24.

The Tar Heels were saved by the dominant performance of big man Tyler Zeller (20 points, 22 rebounds). The rebounding advantage was a massive 56-26 overall, not that surprising against the much smaller frontline of the MAC school. The size advantage will be less pronounced against Kansas.

The Jayhawks (30-6 SU, 17-17-1 ATS) held on to beat No. 11 NC State on Friday, 60-57 as 8 ½-point favorites. That comes after a fortunate 3-point win over Purdue (63-60) last game as 8-point favorites. The ‘under’ is 3-0 in Kansas’ three tourney games, scoring just 62.7 PPG and allowing 55.7.

Center Jeff Withey had 10 blocks against NC State and he will be the key to containing Zeller inside. Guard Tyshawn Taylor (6-of-25) and power forward Thomas Robinson (9-of-29) have shot poorly the last two games and can’t afford another clunker.

These are two of the most storied programs in college basketball and pits Tar Heels’ coach Roy Williams against his former team. Williams got beaten badly by the Jayhawks in the 2008 Final Four (84-66). Kansas coach Bill Self won his only national title that year, while Williams has two of his own (2005, 2009).

Marshall is questionable at best after having surgery earlier in the week. Kansas being favored suggests that he will either not suit up or be limited.
