  • Milwaukee Bucks Streaking With Celtics In Town

The Milwaukee Bucks are quietly the hottest team in the NBA. They hope to continue their streak Thursday night versus the Boston Celtics as part of a 6-game slate.

Tip-off from Bradley Center will be at 8:00 p.m. (ET) and NBA-TV will have the night’s only nationally televised game opposite March Madness. We identified three red-hot against the spread teams in our Tuesday night preview in Milwaukee, New York and Phoenix. Each covered the spread that night.

Milwaukee (21-24 straight up, 22-23 ATS) has now won 6-straight and covered eight in a row. The whole team is playing well, but the acquisition of shooting guard Monta Ellis from Golden State for the injured Andrew Bogut is another boost. Ellis is averaging 16 PPG in his two Bucks’ games and forms a potent backcourt with Brandon Jennings.

Scott Skiles’ team is in the playoff chase and up to seventh in league scoring (98 PPG) after averaging 112 PPG the last seven games. The last game at Portland (116-87) on Tuesday did go under the 206 ½-point total, after the ‘over’ was 6-0 in the previous six.

The Celtics (24-21 SU, 20-25-1 ATS) are seventh in the Eastern Conference and the last two playoff spots could come down to them, New York and Milwaukee. Boston is towards the end of a grueling 8-game road trip that started on the West Coast and has gone 3-3 SU and ATS.

Point production has dropped for the Celtics the last four games (105, 95, 91 and 79), but this aging group will at least have had two days rest before Thursday. Boston will be without big men Jermaine O’Neal and Chris Wilcox for the rest of the year, with the slender Kevin Garnett forced to play center.

Boston won the only meeting this year, 102-96 at home on Leap Day. The Bucks just got the cover as 6½-point ‘dogs and are 4-1 ATS in the last five in the series.

Golden State Warriors at Houston Rockets
8:00 p.m. (ET) on Regional Broadcasts

The Warriors (18-25 SU, 22-21 ATS) have lost 4-straight games (2-2 ATS) pending a Wednesday night duel in New Orleans. Golden State has actually covered its last four away (3-1 SU), with two coming after the unpopular trade of Ellis. Injuries are a big concern with center Andris Biedrins (groin) questionable Wednesday and Stephen Curry (ankle) out indefinitely.

The Rockets (25-22 SU, 24-23 ATS) have a slim lead for the eighth playoff spot in the Western Conference. They’ve played seven of their last nine away, but are 2-0 SU and ATS in the home ones, including 107-104 over the Lakers on Tuesday. Point guard Kyle Lowry (infection) is out indefinitely and Kevin Martin (shoulder) doubtful, but this is a deep group that keeps fighting.

Golden State won the first meeting against Houston this year, 106-97 as a 1½-point home favorite on February 12. Houston is 6-0 SU and ATS in the last six in Texas.

Memphis Grizzlies at Portland Trail Blazers
10:00 p.m. (ET) on Regional Broadcasts

Memphis (25-19 SU, 20-24 ATS) started its 4-game trip on Tuesday, a 119-110 loss at Sacramento as 3-point favorites. The Grizzlies are 1-3 SU and 0-4 ATS in their last four games. Power forward Zach Randolph (knee) has scored 17 PPG in the last three after being out since early January. The team should start to jell more as it gets used to the new starting lineup.

The Trail Blazers (21-25 SU, 21-24-1 ATS) continued their skid with an awful 116-87 home loss to Milwaukee on Tuesday. They’re 3-9 SU and ATS since the All-Star break, with the last five losses by an average of 24.4 points. Coach Nate McMillan has already been fired and replaced by Kaleb Canales, but they look outmanned right now.

Portland won the only meeting against Memphis this year back in January, 97-84 as 6-point favorites.

    Utah Jazz at Sacramento Kings
10:00 p.m. (ET) on Regional Broadcasts

Utah (24-22 SU and ATS) is fighting for a playoff spot and has won four straight (3-1 ATS) after a 97-90 Tuesday home win over Oklahoma City as 3-point ‘dogs. The Jazz’ prior game was a rare road win at the Lakers (103-99), going just 6-16 SU and 8-14 ATS overall this season. The ‘over’ is 4-0 in their last four away, scoring 100.5 PPG and allowing 108.5 PPG.

The Kings (17-29 SU, 24-22 ATS) are also a much better home team (13-9 SU) than away (4-20 SU). They’re ending a massive 9-game homestand, winning and covering the last three over Boston (120-95), Minnesota (115-99) and Memphis (119-110). The ‘over’ is 4-0 in the last four, with an average 223.5 total points.

The home team has taken both meetings this year, with Sacramento’s victory 103-96 as a 3½-point favorite on February 28. The Kings have covered the last four in the series and the ‘under’ is 3-0 in the last three.

    • Predators Visit Red-Hot Pittsburgh Penguins

With an offensive explosion of eight goals against the Winnipeg Jets in Tuesday night’s 8-4 win, the Pittsburgh Penguins now have the NHL’s highest scoring offense, averaging 3.2 goals per game. Evgeni Malkin is running away with the NHL’s scoring title with 93 points (adding two goals and three assists Tuesday night), and Sidney Crosby tacked on four assists as well.

The Penguins haven’t lost in regulation in over a month (since February 19) with a 12-0-1 record in their last 13 games. They’ll look to stretch their point streak to 14 games at home against the Nashville Predators Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. (ET). Pittsburgh (45-21-6) has pulled to within one point of the New York Rangers for the Eastern Conference’s top spot.

Nashville (42-23-8) has hit a bit of a snag of late, losing three of its last four (1-2-1) including an ugly 6-3 loss to Edmonton at home Tuesday. The Predators made the news this week in re-acquiring Alexander Radulov, an extremely talented right-winger that has been in the KHL since 2008 due to a contract dispute; but it is unclear whether he will join Nashville for Thursday night’s game or will need to practice with the team for a few games first.

Two of the Western Conference’s hottest teams square off in Los Angeles Thursday night when the Los Angeles Kings host the St. Louis Blues at 10:30 p.m. (ET). St. Louis (46-19-8) has won 10 of its last 13 games (10-2-1) and leads the NHL in points with 100 as well as defense in allowing just 1.8 goals per game.

Los Angeles (36-25-12) isn’t far behind defensively (ranking second in the league with 2.1 goals against per game), and has won four straight games and eight of its last 10. The Kings have won five straight games at home, and despite St. Louis’s NHL-best record, the Blues are just 17-15-4 (17-19 on the moneyline) on the road. Los Angeles has won two of its three meetings against St. Louis this season.

The Philadelphia Flyers and the red-hot Ilya Bryzgalov look to continue their strong regular season finish as they host the Washington Capitals Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. (ET). Bryzgalov has given up two goals or less in each of his last nine starts, and the Flyers are 7-1-1 over that stretch.

Washington (37-30-6) has won five of its last seven games, but is still just 14-20-3 on the road this season. Philadelphia (42-23-8) has won two of its three meetings with Washington this season.

Back out West, the mad scramble for points in the playoff race continues with three key games: the Vancouver Canucks (43-21-8) at the Dallas Stars (40-28-5) at 8:30 p.m. (ET), the Colorado Avalanche (40-30-5) visiting the Phoenix Coyotes (36-26-12) at 10:00 p.m. (ET), and the Boston Bruins (42-27-3) on the road at the San Jose Sharks (36-27-10) at 10:30 p.m. (ET). Dallas, Colorado, Phoenix and San Jose entered Wednesday’s action within three points of each other in the standings.

Cincinnati is strong defensive team- they're 9-2 in last 11 games, allowing 50-46 points in the two losses. Cincinnati-Ohio State met for national title in both '61/'62, have met just once since, five years ago; over last decade, #2 seeds are 4-3-1 vs spread when facing a 6-seed in this round.

Since 2004, SEC teams are 9-4 in this round, covering seven of nine as an underdog. Since '05, Big East teams are 11-9 in this round; they're 5-9 vs spread in last 14 games as a favorite in this round. #3 seeds covered five of last seven games in this round when not facing a #2 seed. Gators lost to Syracuse and Rutgers in their two games vs Big East foes this season. Marquette beat Ole Miss by 30, lost by 17 to Vandy in its two games this year against SEC teams. Armadillo's Write-Up

                        Friday, March 23

Xavier is in Sweet 16 for fourth time in last five years; they're 2-0-1 vs spread in this round, winning by 4 in OT (+1.5), losing by 5 (+7), losing by 5 in double OT (+5). Musketeers were down 15 in first half Sunday vs Lehigh, pulled away from tired team late and won by 12. Baylor was 19-40 from arc in Albuquerque last weekend;this game is in a dome, not a normal basketball venue- will 3-point shooting be an issue (Xavier is less dependent on shooting 3's). Bears have been this far once before, in '10- they beat St Mary's by 23 in similar role as favorite. Musketeers are holding foes to 30.5% behind arc- this is the key stat to this game.

Ohio Bobcats are #2 team in country at forcing turnovers (26.3% of all possessions); now they're facing team whose only healthy PG is White, a 6-0 freshman who hardly got mentioned in preseason magazines. Ohio won 10 of last 11 games- their highest profile game this season was loss at Louisville (59-54) back in December. Henson is playing with injured left wrist, Marshall (broken wrist) is highly doubtful to play here, but since 2001, double digit seeds (Ohio is a 13) are 1-8 vs spread when up against a #1 seed in this round, with all nine losses by 10+ points, seven of nine by 15+. UNC won/covered its last four games in this round.

Kentucky (-5.5) lost 73-72 at Indiana Dec 10, despite shooting 55% for game; Davis played 24 foul-plagued minutes. Indiana made 9-15 on arc, got 34 minutes from PG Jones, who is out now. Wildcat were 42-all in last game vs Iowa State, won by 16 with explosive scoring bursts- they shot 55% from floor, 10-20 from arc. Indiana held VCU to four points in final 11:00 last game, For whatever reason, Southeast has been good for favorites (7-1 vs spread in this round last four years, compared to 13-15 in other three regions). Since 2001, #1 seeds are 23-18 vs spread in this round. Kentucky is eager for revenge; this game is in SEC country.

Since 2003, double digit seeds not playing a #1 seed in this round are 2-5 vs spread, 1-4 as an underdog; NC State won six of its last seven games, beat Texas 77-74 in only game vs Big X opponent this year. Kansas is 11-1 in its last 12 games, with five of those wins vs top 40 teans- they hold teams to 39.8% inside arc (#2 in country). Jayhawks lost to Duke by 7, in its only game vs an ACC opponent. Since '05, #2 seeds are 5-8 in this round; favorites of 8+ points are 0-5 vs spread during that time. Wolfpack lost four games in row in mid-February, looked like dead club, so they're playing with house money here. Pressure is on Kansas.
