Tuesday’s betting tips: No booty for Pirates in neutral-site games

    Who’s hot

NBA: The under is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings between the Lakers and Pistons.

NBA: Miami is 8-3 against the spread in its last 11.

NCAAB: St. John’s has covered the number in four of its last five.

NCAAB: Providence is 7-3 against the number in its last 10 overall.

NHL: The under is 8-3-4 in Washington’s last 15.

NHL: Tampa Bay has won seven of its last nine.

    Who’s not

NBA: New Jersey is 4-10 against the number in its last 14.

NBA: Boston is 2-7 against the spread in its last nine.

NCAAB: Villanova is 6-20-1 against the spread in its last 27 games against Big East opponents.

NBAAB: Pitt has covered in just two of its last seven overall.

NHL: New Jersey has won one of its last six.

NHL: Montreal has won once in its last seven games overall.

    Key stat

8 - The Seton Hall Pirates have covered the number only eight times in their last 30 games on a neutral floor. To make matters worse, they head into Tuesday’s Big East Tournament matchup with Providence at Madison Square Garden having dropped consecutive games both straight up and against the number.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Brook Lopez, New Jersey Nets - Lopez left Sunday's game against the Charlotte Bobcats after rolling his right ankle in the third quarter and is expected to be out of action for three weeks. Lopez underwent X-rays and left the arena on crutches. The 7-foot Lopez was appearing in only his fifth game of the season. He had missed the first 32 games of the season with a broken bone in his right foot. He entered the contest averaging 22.5 points.

    Game of the day

DePaul Blue Demons at UConn Huskies (-8.5, 145.5)

    Notable quotable

“I’m told he is desperate to go back to L.A. The Lakers will not take him. The Clippers would love to make that deal, but they don’t have the pieces that Dallas would want right now because Dallas wants expiring contracts to be a free agent player, but don’t surprised if Lamar Odom makes his way back to L.A. It just won’t be this season.” – NBA analyst Ric Bucher on Dallas Mavericks forward Lamar Odom and his request to be traded. Odom is averaging career lows in points (7.7) and rebounds (4.5) per game in his first season with the Mavs.

    Notes and tips

Jim Calhoun returned to the UConn sideline Saturday, just five days after undergoing back surgery, and guided the Huskies to a 74-65 victory over Pitt. The win was just UConn’s third in its last eight games. The Huskies covered as 5.5-point favorites, improving to just 10-15-1 against the spread this season. UConn is the No. 9 seed in the Big East Tournament and faces No. 16 seed DePaul in the first round Tuesday.

While the NCAA continues to investigate Syracuse for violating its own drug policy, Athletic Director Daryl Gross said that no current players on the Orange roster were involved with the investigation. “We're not dealing with any current student-athletes,” Gross told the Syracuse-Post Standard. “We know what kind of kids we have here. We have good kids who are in compliance with all NCAA rules and university policies.”

The Ottawa Senators called up newly-acquired goaltender Ben Bishop from Birmingham and he will make his first start with the Sens Tuesday against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Bishop was 2-1 with a 2.35 goals-against average with Birmingham.

Miami Heat forward Chris Bosh is expected to return to the team Tuesday after missing the last three games following the death of his grandmother. Bosh is putting up 18.4 points and 8.3 rebounds per game.

      Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- VCU went up 16 at the half over Drexel, then hung on for dear life and won the CAA title, 59-56, ending Dragons' 19-game win streak.

-- Oral Roberts went 17-1 in Summit League this year, but got upset by Western Illinois 54-53, in conference tourney semifinals.

-- Davidson was up 76-65 on Western Carolina with 2:05 left, but the gritty Catamounts, playing for fourth straight night, tied game, before Davidson won 93-91 in double OT in Southern Conference title game.

-- Tremendous ballgame in Vegas, with Elias Harris tying game with a trey with 0:03.7 left for Gonzaga, but St Mary's won 78-74 in OT in the WCC title game. Both teams are really good.

-- Kevin Love had 39 points, 17 rebounds as Minnesota beat Clippers for the third time this season, 95-94 in the Target Center.

-- Watching Mets game Monday night, was hard to keep a dry eye as Met announcers Ron Darling/Keith Hernandez talked about their late teammate, Hall of Fame catcher Gary Carter.

      ***************

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Things to look for during Championship Week

      13) Texas as a bubble team? Their game first round game with Iowa State Thursday becomes a big one for the Longhorns.

      12) Long Beach State got beat in the Big West tournament by UCSB the last two years; they were 15-0 in conference this year, before losing at Cal-State Fullerton Saturday. Can the 49ers finally win the big one and get Coach Monson back in the field of 68?

      11) Will Penn beat Princeton Tuesday and force a playoff game with Harvard? If so, where will the game be played? Will it be televised? If Penn wins the Ivy, does Harvard get an at-large bid?

      10) Over the last nine years, Michigan State is 0-6 in semifinals of the Big Dozen tournament, another way of saying Coach Izzo wants no part of the Sunday afternoon tournament final.

      9) Kentucky breezed thru the SEC at 16-0 this season; they’ve also had a fairly easy time winning the last two SEC tournaments. Can anyone give them a game in New Orleans this weekend?

      8) Other than Air Force, there are no easy outs in the Mountain West; the 4-5 game with TCU-Colorado State could be an NCAA elimination game for the NCAAs for State, which went 7-0 at home in conference, but only 1-6 on foreign soil.

      7) Montana-Weber State, if they meet Wednesday night in Missoula for the Big Sky title, is a better game than you think it is. Weber has an NBA guard in Lillard; the Grizzlies play very good defense.

      6) Conference USA always seems to boil down to Memphis and whether can anyone beat Memphis; Southern Miss has been slumping lately, UCF looks dysfunctional away from home. I’m thinking the Tigers defend their home court and move on to the NCAAs. Again.

      5) How many coaches will get fired between now and Selection Sunday? Canisius/Brown/Winthrop fired their coaches during day Monday; college administrators can say all they want about coaches and integrity, but they fire you for losing a hell of a lot faster than they do for cheating.

      4) Who wins the Pac-12 tournament? Its not impossible that the Pac-12 is a one-bid league, which would be embarrassing for a BCS league.

      3) Hard to believe Illinois wound up 9th in the Big Dozen; if they can Bruce Weber after the season, the Illini job will be the crowd jewel of this spring’s coaching carousel, just because of how close it is to Chicago, which has a wealth of talent in the high schools.

      2) North Carolina manhandled Duke twice this season, but let the first meeting (up 10 with 2:15 left) slip away. If they play again Sunday, in an event Duke has dominated, can they turn the tables on the Tar Heels?

      1) If Northwestern can make some noise this weekend, they're going to be on the bubble for their first-ever NCAA bid. Keep in mind that CBS will be very happy if the Wildcats get in, since Northwestern is very close to Chicago, one of the nation's biggest TV markets. If they can win a couple games this weekend, the Wildcats will be a story Sunday night.

Big East Conference Tournament: Tuesday's betting previews
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DePaul Blue Demons vs. UConn Huskies (-8.5, 145.5)

                THE STORY
: Last year at this time, Connecticut stumbled into the Big East tournament on the NCAA tournament bubble and began an historic run that would take them through 11 straight wins and the national championship. The Huskies are hoping for a similar result in 2011-12, but the Huskies have some work to do. Connecticut limps into the conference tournament having dropped nine of its last 13 games. That starts against DePaul, which got crushed by the Huskies, 80-54, on Feb. 15. The Blue Demons showed what they were capable of in an 86-58 victory over Seton Hall on Saturday but are still the 16th seed.

                TV: 12 p.m. ET, ESPN 2, ESPN 3

THE LINE: The Huskies opened as 8.5-point favorites with a 145.5-point total.

ABOUT DEPAUL (12-18, 3-15 Big East): The Blue Demons can score with the best of them but had not been able to stop anyone on the other end until Saturday, when they thoroughly dismantled the Pirates. That snapped a nine-game losing streak and gave DePaul a little momentum on the eve of the tournament. The Blue Demons did a great job of stopping Seton Hall point guard Jordan Theodore, which was a problem when they faced the Huskies. In the Feb. 15 meeting, Shabazz Napier cut through the DePaul defense en route to 14 points and 11 assists. Second-leading scorer Brandon Young had one of his worst games in that one, struggling to two points on 1-of-9 shooting.

ABOUT CONNECTICUT (18-12, 8-10): The ninth-seeded Huskies dominated the glass against the Blue Demons, outrebounding them 47-22 as Alex Oriakhi and Andre Drummond combined for 29 points and 19 boards. Connecticut managed to keep its at-large hopes alive on Saturday, as coach Jim Calhoun returned to the sidelines and guided the team to a 74-65 victory over Pittsburgh. Calhoun had missed the last month due to back problems as the team slipped down the standings. The Huskies have a strong non-conference win over Florida State and won at Notre Dame but could use a little more Madison Square Garden magic to push them to better bubble position.

                TRENDS:

                - UConn has covered in four of the last five meetings between the two teams.
                - DePaul is 0-8 against the spread following an ATS loss.
                - The over is 5-0 in UConn's last five.

                TIP-INS:

                1. UConn beat DePaul, 97-71, in the first round of the tournament last season.

                2. Huskies G Jeremy Lamb was named first-team All-Big East while Drummond was named to the All-Rookie team.

                3. The winner will play No. 8 seed West Virginia on Wednesday.

Pittsburgh Panthers vs. St. John's Red Storm (5.5, 135)

THE STORY: Last season, both St. John’s and Pittsburgh entered the Big East tournament virtually assured of a spot in the NCAA tournament. This year, both schools will need a miracle run all the way to the championship to get back. The Panthers will say goodbye to several key seniors after this season and are limping into Madison Square Garden losers of six of their last seven games. The lone victory in that stretch came at home on Feb. 29, when Pittsburgh rolled over the Red Storm, 89-69, behind 19 points from senior Ashton Gibbs.

THE LINE: Oddsmakers had the Red Storm pegged as 5.5-point underdogs with a 135-point total at the open.

                TV: 2 p.m. ET, ESPN 2, ESPN 3

ABOUT PITTSBURGH (16-15, 5-13 Big East): The 13th-seeded Panthers were ranked as high as No. 9 in the country in Week 2 but had injuries to several key players derail the season early. They averaged 53.2 during a five-game losing streak from Feb. 8 to Feb. 26 that knocked them off the bubble completely. Pittsburgh’s best game in the last month came against St. John’s, when it shot 63.3 percent from the floor and dominated the glass, 30-14. The Panthers could not carry that momentum into the regular season finale, dropping a 74-65 decision at Connecticut. Pittsburgh has won the Big East Tournament twice but has never had to win five games in as many days to accomplish the feat.

ABOUT ST. JOHN’S (13-18, 6-12): The 12th-seeded Red Storm are a completely different team than the one that went to the NCAA tournament last season. St. John’s starts five freshman and gives only six players regular minutes, with sixth man God’sgift Achiuwa a first-year player as well. The Red Storm have suffered through the inconsistencies of that youth, with highs like a 61-58 win over Notre Dame and lows in losses at Pittsburgh and Rutgers to close the season. Second-leading scorer Moe Harkless struggled to four points against the Panthers while D’Angelo Harrison led with 21.

                TRENDS:

                - Pitt has covered the number in six of the last seven meetings between the two teams.
                - St. John's has covered in four of its last five.
                - The under is 9-4 in St. John's last 13 neutral-site games.

                TIP-INS:

                1. The winner will play No. 5 seed Georgetown on Wednesday.

                2. Gibbs and Harkless were named to the All-Big East Honorable Mention list.

                3. Pittsburgh has advanced to seven of the last 11 Big East Championship Finals.

Villanova Wildcats at Rutgers Scarlet Knights (1.5, 136)

Villanova and Rutgers are meeting for the second time in less than a week. The 14th-seeded Wildcats posted a 77-71 road win over the 11th-seeded Scarlet Knights last Thursday, their lone victory in their last six games and second in the last 10.

Both teams are among the youngest in the conference, with neither side having a single scholarship senior on the roster. Villanova is 15th among 16 Big East teams in scoring defense, while Rutgers is 15th in scoring offense.

The Scarlet Knights have shown improvement down the stretch, winning two of their last three despite a green lineup that features three freshman starters.

Rookie G Eli Carter is the lone Rutgers player scoring in double figures at 13.5 ppg, while freshman G Myles Mack and sophomore PF Gilvydas Biruta add 9.9 ppg each.

We like Rutgers to get the better of the Wildcats this time.

                    Pick: Scarlet Knights

Providence Friars vs. Seton Hall Pirates (-5.5, 136.5)

Seton Hall will be looking to help its shot at an NCAA tournament bid that seemed all but certain before the Pirates faded down the stretch by losing three of their last four, including an ugly 86-58 defeat at last-place DePaul on Saturday.

Providence, which suffered a 66-57 home loss to Seton Hall on Jan. 7, will look to play the role of spoiler after finishing the regular season with a narrow 75-69 setback at Notre Dame. The Pirates and Friars finished 1-2 in the Big East this season in 3-point shooting percentage.

The young Pirates have leaned heavily on their two All-Big East seniors — second-team PG Jordan Theodore leads the team in scoring (16.0) and assists (6.7), while third-team PF Herb Pope adds 15.3 points and a team-best 10.3 rebounds.

Defensively, Seton Hall allows opponents to shoot just 31 percent from 3-point range, and sophomore SG Fuquan Edwin leads the nation in steals with 3.1 per game.

                    Pick: Under

Pick 'n' roll: Tuesday's best NBA bets
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oddsmakers have yet to set a line for the New Jersey-Miami matchup. Pick should be considered an early lean.

New Jersey Nets at Miami Heat (N/A)

After lighting up the Charlotte Bobcats, Deron Williams may have a tough time against the stingy Miami Heat.

Williams blew up for 57 points to go along with six rebounds and seven assists in Sunday’s 104-101 win, hitting all 21 attempts from the free-throw line as well.

“He was really focused,” head coach Avery Johnson told the Chicago Sun-Times. “He was well-rested. He made a lot of shots yesterday in our mini-practice, and it carried over into tonight’s game. We were going back and forth on whether to have a shootaround this morning, and we opted for rest. And he was pretty fresh.”

Charlotte decided not to double-team Williams off the pick-and-roll and he made them pay. However, he’s not going to get nearly as much room if he’s lined up against LeBron James.

The Heat, who have lost two straight, expect to have Chris Bosh back in action against New Jersey. Miami should have no problem bottling up the Nets’ attack.

                      Pick: Heat

Los Angeles Lakers at Detroit Pistons (5, 186)

The Los Angeles Lakers have come out of the All-Star break on fire, with Kobe Bryant leading the way. Bryant, who is playing with a mask to protect a broken nose suffered in the All-Star Game, is averaging 34 points in three straight wins.

The Lakers made a statement Sunday with a win over the Miami Heat and will play five of their next six on the road. Bryant shot 61 percent from the floor en route to 33 points against the Heat on Sunday as Los Angeles cruised to a 93-83 victory. After allowing 107 points in a win over the Sacramento Kings, the Lakers found their groove on defense and held Miami to less than 38 percent shooting.

Now they head out on the road to visit the Pistons, who have dropped four of their last five.

The Pistons have struggled to score in the half court against strong defensive teams. They matched a season-low point total in 97-68 loss to the 76ers on Feb. 28 and were outscored 31-13 in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s 100-83 loss to the Grizzlies.

                      Pick: Under
