Syracuse, Marquette Matchup Tops Weekend Schedule
As we head into another exciting weekend of college basketball, we continue our quest to uncover unique betting trends that could hold into the future.
The top-10 scoring teams in the country are listed below. Six of them are ranked in the top-25 starting with Duke (No. 3) and followed by North Carolina (No. 4), Missouri (No. 6), Indiana (No. 12), Florida (No. 14) and even mid-major Creighton (No. 24). Note the top two ranked teams in the nation, Syracuse and Kentucky, are just outside the top-10 in scoring.
It pays to score a lot of points in more ways than one with these 10 schools combining for a 52-35-3 record against the spread (59.8 percent).
1) North Carolina 88.1 PPG (8-6 ATS)
2) Missouri 86.2 PPG (6-3 ATS)
3) VMI 85.9 PPG (0-2 ATS)
4) Iona 85.8 PPG (5-6-1 ATS)
5) Florida 85.4 PPG (5-4-1 ATS)
6A) Indiana 82.6 PPG (8-1 ATS)
6B) Oregon State 82.6 PPG (6-3-1 ATS)
6C) Creighton 82.6 PPG (8-2 ATS)
9) Duke 82.1 PPG (6-8 ATS)
10) Texas State 81.5 PPG (0-0 ATS)
Now contrast that to the top-10 defensive teams in the country. Three are ranked in the AP top-25 with Ohio State at No. 7 followed by Wisconsin (No. 19) and Virginia (No. 23). The combined ATS mark for these teams is 58-41 (58.6 percent).
1) Wisconsin 47.2 PPG (9-4 ATS)
2) Virginia 50.4 PPG (7-2 ATS)
3) Wyoming 52.3 PPG (7-3 ATS)
4) Tulane 54.5 PPG (4-4 ATS)
5) Saint Louis 54.9 PPG (8-3 ATS)
6) Stephen F. Austin 54.9 PPG (0-0 ATS)
7A) Cal Poly 55.4 PPG (6-5 ATS)
7B) Drexel 55.4 PPG (5-7 ATS)
7C) Ohio State 55.4 PPG (6-5 ATS)
10) USC 55.5 PPG (6-8 ATS)
Duke looks to rebound Saturday at Georgia Tech
Duke (12-2 straight up, 6-8 ATS) kicks off its ACC slate Saturday at Georgia Tech, but got caught looking ahead Wednesday night at Temple. The 78-73 defeat as 7½-point favorites was marked by 56.4 percent shooting from the field from the Owls. Duke ranks just 11th in the ACC in scoring defense (69.1 PPG) after allowing 64.7 PPG last year.
Georgia Tech is only 7-7 SU this year (3-6 ATS) and has lost its last three games, including ones to lightly regarded Fordham (72-66) and Mercier (65-59). The Yellow Jackets’ fans will get instant-energy with Duke in town, but this looks like a good spot for the Blue Devils to get their first true road win (0-2 SU and ATS) of the season.
Top-ranked Syracuse (16-0, 11-4 ATS) play just its second ranked opponent this year when it hosts No. 20 Marquette on Saturday. The Orange are 11-0 SU and 7-3 ATS at home, failing to cover when then No. 9 Florida came to visit on December 2. That 72-68 final went down to the wire as 7-point favorites.
Marquette (12-3 SU, 4-7-1 ATS) is scuffling after its 10-0 SU start. The Golden Eagles have lost three of their last five games, including 73-70 at Georgetown on Wednesday. That was at least a cover of the 4½-point spread after going 0-6-1 ATS in the previous seven. Syracuse has revenge on its mind after losing both games to Marquette last year, with one in the NCAA tourney’s second round.
Badgers happy to visit Michigan on Sunday
It’s been a brutal stretch for the No. 19 Wisconsin Badgers (12-4 SU, 9-4 ATS), dropping consecutive home games to Iowa (72-65) and Michigan State (63-60 OT). A combined 8-of-50 effort (16 percent) from beyond the arc really hurt. The team already has three losses at the Kohl Center this year after going 16-0 SU last season.
The Badgers now head away from Madison where they’re 4-1 SU and ATS. The No. 13 Michigan Wolverines (12-2 SU, 6-5 ATS) will be the opponent after playing Thursday night at Indiana (result pending). Michigan is a perfect 9-0 SU (3-3 ATS) at home this season, but the Crisler Center has been kind to Wisconsin recently, winning four straight (3-1 ATS).
The other big game on Sunday stays in the Big Ten with No. 12 Indiana (13-1 SU, 8-1 ATS) visiting Penn State. The Hoosiers lost their first conference road game at Michigan State (80-65) back on Dec. 28, but proved it can win in a hostile environment earlier this year with a victory (86-75) at talented NC State.
The Nittany Lions (8-7 SU, 3-7 ATS) would love to make some noise in the Big Ten to distract from the football woes, but that’s not going to happen. They’re 0-5 ATS in their last five lined games, but will be at least be playing their conference home opener after losses at Michigan (71-53) and Northwestern (68-56).
