Weekend Betting Notes

At 9-6, Notre Dame has been a moderate disappointment this season. Although a bit of a fall back was expected for the Irish after they earned a No. 2 seed in last season's NCAA Tournament but lost nearly every top player to graduation.

But for Notre Dame backers, the 2011-12 Irish have been a nightmare thus far. Following Wednesday's 71-55 loss at Cincinnati in Big East play, Notre Dame has easily the worst against the spread mark of any BCS conference team at 1-7-1. And things don't figure to get much better on Saturday as Notre Dame visits No. 10 Louisville. The Irish are 0-3 in true road games this year and 0-6 ATS in all games away from their South Bend campus.

The top Big East game on Saturday, which could draw the most betting action of the weekend at Bovada, is No. 20 Marquette visiting No. 1 Syracuse, with the Orange one of four unbeaten teams remaining in the nation.

Syracuse blasted Providence earlier this week to improve to 16-0 for the second year in a row. Last season's team went 18-0 before its first loss. Marquette started 10-0 but has lost three of five, including blowing a 17-point lead with just over 13 minutes left and losing 73-70 at No. 9 Georgetown on Wednesday.

The other unbeaten teams entering the weekend are No. 6 Missouri, No. 5 Baylor and No. 18 Murray State. It's not inconceivable that all three lose on Saturday. Mizzou faces a major challenge at No. 22 Kansas State, and the Tigers haven't won there (or covered) since 2004. Baylor will be a solid favorite at Texas Tech, but the Red Raiders usually pull off a home upset a season over a ranked foe.

Murray State, of the Ohio Valley Conference, is clearly no fluke. The Racers have already beaten likely NCAA Tournament teams Southern Miss, Memphis and Dayton this season. They shouldn't have much trouble as a double-digit favorite at Austin Peay on Saturday, but the Governors did win at Tennessee earlier this season.

ASU down 2 starters again Saturday

Missing two starters and a key reserve didn't much bother Arizona State in the first leg of the Sun Devils' trip to Los Angeles on Thursday night. Starters Keala King and Kyle Cain and reserve Chris Colvin didn't make the trip to L.A. due to "unacceptable conduct." King is averaging a team-high 13.7 points, while Crain averages 8.5 points and Colvin 5.4.

ASU went off as a 9.5-point dog at Southern Cal on Thursday but beat the Trojans 62-53. That line opened at ASU +7 but jumped as high as 10.5 once the suspensions were announced. Certainly those absences will have an effect on Saturday's line at UCLA. The Bruins (8-7) have been one of the nation's biggest disappointments but are 7-3 ATS at "home" - UCLA doesn't have any true home games as Pauley Pavilion is being renovated this year.

Towson can set record it doesn't want

Normally the book wouldn't see much action on a game between Towson and Old Dominion. But Saturday's matchup has some special significance. Towson lost 60-27 to Colonial Athletic Association rival Drexel earlier this week for its 34th straight loss.

That matches the longest losing streak in Division I history, also done by Sacramento State from 1997 to 1999. New Jersey Institute of Technology lost 51 straight from 2007 to 2009, but was reclassifying to Division I at the time.

Against Drexel, Towson's 27 points were its fewest since moving to Division I in 1979. It also set a NCAA record for fewest points in a conference game. In addition, Towson hit only eight field goals, with only one player making more than one.

The new crop of mid-majors

Butler has reached the past two national title games and Virginia Commonwealth made it a mid-major party in Houston last season with its run to the Final Four.

The Rams have been on a roll after a slow start this season and the Bulldogs have been reeling, though they always seem to make a run when people least expect it.

If you're a college hoops fan, you probably already know about those two mid-majors - along with Gonzaga, Xavier, maybe even Davidson or George Mason.

Every year, though, there are a handful of teams from outside the big conferences that seem to come out of nowhere and gain national attention.

Here's a half-dozen that have caught our attention:

Murray State. Quick, for any non-alums, what's the mascot for Murray State? No, it's not the Murrays, though a big, lumbering guy in a tan short-sleeved shirt and brown tie would be the sweetest mascot of all-time. They're called the Racers and they are ballers. At 15-0, No. 19 Murray State is off to its best start since 1935-36 and is giving Kentucky college hoops fans someone to cheer for outside those bluebloods in Lexington and Louisville. The Racers are one of four Division I teams still undefeated despite recently losing top rebounder Ivan Aska to a broken hand, and have the look of a team that could enter the postseason undefeated in a down year in the Ohio Valley Conference. These Racers, fittingly for their name, are looking an awful lot like thoroughbreds.

Harvard. The Crimson had a heartbreaking end to last season, sharing the Ivy League title, then losing to Princeton in a one-game playoff for a trip to the NIT instead of the NCAAs. This season, Harvard has the look of a team ready to break one of the nation's longest NCAA-tournament-less streaks, dating to when Truman was president. Led by powerfully built forward Keith Wright, the 22nd-ranked Crimson (12-2) appear to be a team that will get the NCAA tournament selection committee's attention regardless of an Ivy League championship. Harvard won the Battle 4 Atlantis holiday tournament in the Bahamas and, despite a loss to Fordham in its last game, is a big favorite to win the Ivy.

Creighton. The Bluejays were regulars in the NCAA tournament in the early 2000s, though they have had a rough go of it in recent years, with no dancing shoes since 2007. That appears to be on the verge of changing, thanks to coach Greg McDermott and his high-scoring son, Doug. Creighton (12-2) has knocked off Iowa, Nebraska and San Diego State, and has one of the nation's most dynamic offenses: second in Division I with 19.9 assists per game, sixth at 83.1 points and eighth in shooting at 50 percent. McDermott - the younger one - was a high school teammate of North Carolina All-American Harrison Barnes and is second in the nation in scoring at 23.8 points per game while averaging more than eight rebounds.

Iona. The Gaels have been basketball's road warriors, playing a school-record nine straight games away from home. They won seven of those and with wins over Maryland, St. Joseph's and Richmond, are looking like a team that could get back to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2006. Iona (11-3) is led by one the best point guards anywhere in Scott Machado, who leads the nation with 10.4 assists per game and is on the verge of a triple-double seemingly every game. The Gaels also have plenty of scoring - fifth nationally at 85.1 points per game - with players like Sean Armand, who hit a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference-record 10 3-pointers while scoring 32 points against Siena at Madison Square Garden in Iona's last game.

Ohio University. The Bobcats made some waves in 2010, winning the MAC tournament as the No. 9 seed, then knocking off No. 3 seed Georgetown in the first round of the NCAA tournament. After missing the NCAAs last season, the Bobcats were picked to win the MAC title and won 12 of their first 13 games - the program's best start since 1939-40. A recent loss to Robert Morris isn't expected to slow them down, either. Led by speedy point guard D.J Cooper, the Bobcats (12-2) are tough to defend and are one of the best teams at guarding the perimeter, holding opponents to 27 percent from 3-point range.

Saint Louis. The Billikens haven't been to the NCAA tournament in over a decade and have had some rough stretches under coach Rick Majerus. This season, Majerus' fifth at the school, Saint Louis (12-3) figures to be a strong contender to make a run for its first NCAA tournament bid since 2000. Playing with a slow-it-down tempo and in-your-jersey defense typical of Majerus-led teams, the Billikens have notched some impressive wins, including double-digit victories over teams from the Big 12, Big East, ACC and Pac-12. The Billikens have lost their last two games, but both were close and they figure to make a strong run through the Atlantic-10 Conference.

Marquette tries to hand Syracuse first loss

MARQUETTE GOLDEN EAGLES (12-3)

at SYRACUSE ORANGE (16-0)

No. 1 Syracuse looks to remain unbeaten when it hosts No. 20 Marquette on Saturday afternoon at the Carrier Dome.

The Golden Eagles have covered three straight games against Syracuse, including a straight-up win in last year’s NCAA Tournament. Darius Johnson-Odom and Jae Crowder combined for 33 points in that 66-62 victory, as Syracuse shot 55% FG, but turned the ball over 18 times. The Orange have only played one ranked team all year (ATS loss to Florida), while Marquette already has five wins away from home, including a victory at then-No. 7 Wisconsin. The Eagles have more rebounds and assists than Syracuse, and will keep the final margin very tight, just like they did at No. 9 Georgetown on Wednesday, when they led by 17 points and lost by three. The pick here is MARQUETTE, 19-6 ATS as an underdog in the past three seasons, to cover.

This FoxSheets trend also favors the Golden Eagles.

Play On - Road underdogs of 10 to 19.5 points (MARQUETTE) - off a road cover where the team lost straight up as an underdog against opponent off 2 or more consecutive road wins. (37-13 since 1997.) (74%, +22.7 units. Rating = 2*).

Marquette’s defense was sliced up in the second half of the Georgetown loss. The Hoyas pumped in 44 second-half points and finished the game shooting 63% FG. The Golden Eagles also turned the ball over 16 times, including six by Todd Mayo. Johnson-Odom continues to get his points (17.9 PPG), but he has struggled shooting the basketball in the past four games (37% FG). Crowder (16.6 PPG, 7.3 RPG) is also scuffling with a similar 37% FG clip over the past four games. Both players will have to find their stroke quickly against Syracuse’s 2-3 zone that is limiting opponents to 59.8 PPG on 38.5% FG for the season.

The Orange have not been tested over the past seven games, outscoring their opponents by 21.1 PPG in this stretch. This includes beating three Big East teams by an average score of 83-63. Syracuse wears teams down with its size, length and depth, as seven players average at least 7.4 PPG. Kris Joseph leads the way with 13.9 PPG, including 35 in the past two games after failing to score (0-for-6 FG) against Seton Hall. He was one of six players to score in double figures in Wednesday’s 87-73 win at Providence, when the Orange shot 61% from the floor and 59% (10-of-17) from three-point land. Although Syracuse has played very well offensively, the school has had trouble rebounding the basketball, a common problem for a zone-oriented defense. The Orange have been out-rebounded in six of their past eight games.

No. 13 Florida visits Tennessee

FLORIDA GATORS (12-3)

at TENNESSEE VOLUNTEERS (7-7)

One of the best teams in the SEC, the No. 13 Florida Gators, head north to Thompson-Boling Arena to take on one of the worst teams in the conference, the Tennessee Volunteers.

The Vols began the season 5-0 ATS, but are just 1-5-1 ATS in the past seven lined games. Tennessee will have its hands full against a Florida team that is quick on the inside and dangerous from its backcourt as well. The Gators make more 3-pointers per game than any other team in the nation, with 11.3 per game, 1.3 more than the next highest team. They are fifth in the nation with 85.4 PPG, led by the lethal Kenny Boynton who averages 19.5 PPG. It is so easy for Florida to score because of its elite passing, seventh-best in the nation with 17.8 APG. With a 2-1 record ATS on the road this season, play on FLORIDA for the win as the chalk.

This three-star FoxSheets trend also backs the Gators.

FLORIDA is 14-4 ATS (77.8%, +9.6 Units) versus good shooting teams - making >=45% of their shots over the last 2 seasons. The average score was FLORIDA 74.6, OPPONENT 64.7 - (Rating = 2*).

Florida (12-3) is led by Boynton on offense. He has scored 20+ points in three consecutive games on an impressive 60.5% shooting in that span. But shutting down Boynton does not mean shutting down the entire Gator offense, as they have four other players who contribute double-digit points. Two of those players are Bradley Beal and Erving Walker who combine for four 3-pointers per game, totaling 28.2 PPG between them. In the paint, Young (12.1 PPG, 6.9 RPG) and Will Yeguete (6.6 RPG) lead the team in rebounding. Yeguete is a particularly interesting player, grabbing all those rebounds in fairly limited time, just 21.6 MPG. At center, Young is just 6-foot-9, which could be a problem against certain opponents but should workout just fine against the Volunteers, who have nobody taller than 6-foot-9 on their roster.

Tennessee (7-7) does not have that same type of go-to scoring threat the Gators do in Boynton. Trae Golden leads them in both scoring and assists (14.8 PPG and 5.3 APG), but also turns it over 2.9 times per game. Their leading inside threat is Jeronne Maymon (11.1 PPG, 7.9 RPG), but he is just 6-foot-7, undersized for a frontcourt player. What the Volunteers lack in frontcourt size they make up in the backcourt, however, with Cameron Tatum and Jordan McRae standing 6-foot-7 and 6-foot-5, respectively. To pull off the upset, they must use their size to stifle the Gators fast-paced style of play and lethal outside shooting.

Florida won last four games with Tennessee by 13-6-1-11 points, with 85-74 win in SEC tourney last March; but Gators' win in Knoxville LY was their first there in last six years. 12-3 Florida won seven of its last eight games, but they're 0-3 on road, losing at Ohio St/Syracuse/Rutgers; their last six wins are all by 18+ points. Vols are playing much slower pace under Martin; they're 0-4 vs top 100 teams, losing to Duke by 10, Pitt by 5, and twice to Memphis, by 2-18 points.

Xavier won its last nine games vs Fordham, winning last three visits to Rose Hill Gym by 15-26-26 points, but Musketeers are 1-5 since fight in Cincinnati game, losing road games at Hawai'i/LaSalle- their rating slid from #25 to #56. Improved Fordham won four of last six games, losing by 4-6 points. Underdogs are 4-2 vs spread in this young A-14 season. Rams are still shooting just 27.5% behind arc, 61.6% from line, but they beat #44 Harvard last week, their best win in years.

Georgetown won its last ten games, with five wins vs top 100 teams and wins at Alabama/Louisville; Hoyas lost their last four games with West Virginia by 17-13-2-6 points- they've lost three of last four visits here, losing by 4-7-13. Young Mountaineers are 2-1 in league, scoring 85-83 in the wins, 48 in ugly loss at Seton Hall. Big East home favorites of 6 or less points are 1-4 vs spread. Georgetown was down 14 at half in last game but rallied to win by 3 at home over Marquette.

Home side won last five Missouri State-Indiana State games; Bears lost last three visits here by 17-1-3 points; four of last five series games were decided by 4 or less points, or in OT. Sycamores beat Missouri State by 4 in MVC finals last March. ISU is 6-0 at home, with last three wins at home by 11+ points. Underdogs are 9-5 vs spread in MVC games, 5-4 on road. MSU is 6-0 vs teams ranked below #100- they're 4-2 on road, including an upset win at #33 Creighton.

Home side won last nine Missouri-Kansas State games; Tigers lost last seven visits to Little Apple, by 20-15-7-37-16-10-10 points. Tigers are unbeaten this season, but their only true road win was at Old Dominion by 7- they're down to seven scholarship players. 11-2 K-State lost by 18 at Kansas last game; under Martin, they're 5-2 in game after losing to rival Jayhawks. Young Wildcats have only one senior in their rotation, while Mizzou has five seniors in its 7-man rotation.

Marquette beat Syracuse twice LY, by 6-4 points, after losing previous four games to Orange; Eagles are 2-3 in last five games overall, blowing double digits in last two road games, losses at LSU by 8, Georgetown by 3. 16-0 Syracuse won its last seven games by 16+ points each; they're forcing turnovers on 27.8% of possessions (#4) and making 55.5% of their 2-point shots (6th). Dating back to LY, five of Marquette's last eight losses are by 10+ points. Big East home faves are 4-7-1 vs spread.

Temple just beat #10 Duke, has trip to #14 Saint Louis next, but first it has hosts Dayton team they beat last two years by 8-10 points, after it lost previous three games to Flyers. Dayton is on road for first time in five weeks; they're 0-2 on foreign soil, losing at Miami O by 5 in OT, at unbeaten Murray State by 17. Flyers are 3-3 vs top 100 teams, with losses by 29-17-5 points. Temple is 4-2 vs teams in top 100, with two wins in OT. Flyers upset Saint Louis in OT in their last game.

Mississippi State won six of last seven games vs Arkansas, winning two of last three visits here, by 14-10 points; 13-2 Bulldogs won only true road game by 5 at Detroit- they've beaten A&M/Arizona at neutral site, lost by hoop to Baylor in Dallas. Arkansas won last six games, but only one of six foes is in top 200; they've got one senior in top eight players, as they learn to play faster under new coach Anderson. Hogs are 0-2 vs top 100 teams, losing to UConn by 13, Oklahoma by 15. .

Miami won its last three games vs Virginia, beating Cavaliers twice LY, both times in OT, once in ACC tourney, but they've lost three of four at Virginia, losing by 20-11-18 points. 'canes are 0-3 vs top 40 teams, with losses by 7-11-7 points to Memphis at home, and on road to West Va, Purdue- they're 1-3 on road, with only win at Charlotte. Virginia won its last 11 games, holding 10 teams under 60 points, with solid win at LSU Monday; Cavalier opponents are shooting just 26.8% from the floor.

Home side won last seven Alabama-Georgia games; Tide lost last three visits to Athens by 9-7-6 points, but they did beat Dawgs in OT in SEC tourney last March. Green played 22 minutes off bench in last game in his first action after missing two games (shoulder). Bama lost at Dayton by 12, hammered Ga Tech in its temporary home in its only two true away games. Georgia is 0-3 vs top 60 teams, losing by 24-14-6 points, but they do have three top 100 wins vs teams ranked 77th or lower.

Best coaching job in country is being done at Georgia State, where new coach Hunter has 11-3 Panthers on 11-game win streak, after they were 63-122 over last six seasons. State is 3-0 in CAA, allowing 43.7 ppg; they're 2-8 in last 10 games vs George Mason, losing last four visits to Fairfax by 6-6-3-15 points. CAA single digit home favorites are 2-5 vs spread. Mason won four in row, nine of last 11 games, beating rival Old Dominion last game- they've won six of their seven home games.

Ironic that Memphis-UAB play same week Gene Bartow passed away; he founded Blazers' program, led Tigers to '73 Final Four. Memphis won last nine games in this regional rivalry, winning four visits here by 1-11-5-3ot points. UAB is 1-6 vs top 100 teams, beating Middle Tennessee; all six losses were by 7+ points; Blazers turn ball over 25.9% of time (330th)- not good. Young Memphis team (#297 in experience playing #13 schedule) won last three games, allowing average of 52 ppg.

Utah State won its last five games vs Nevada, with four wins by double figure margins; Wolf Pack lost last four visits to Logan by 14-11-11-22 points. Youngish Aggies are 8-1 at home, losing to #101 Denver; they've won five of last six games, but 66-64 loss at Miss State was impressive as any of the five wins. Nevada won last eight games, with road wins at ASU/Montana/Idaho- they beat Washington at home and only lost at UNLV by 4, so they're an improving team.
