Monday’s betting tips: Saints bettors moving MNF line

    Who’s hot

NFL: New Orleans has covered the spread in four straight at home.

NHL: Tampa Bay has won eight of its last 11 against Western Conference teams.

NHL: San Jose has won seven of its last eight road games.

NCAAB: Louisville has covered in 10 of its last 13.

    Who’s not

NFL: The New York Giants are 3-7 against the spread in their last 10 games against NFC foes.

NHL: Nashville has won eight of its last 11 games in Edmonton.

NHL: Dallas has lost seven of its last nine overall.

NCAAB: Memphis is 6-21 against the spread in its last 27 non-conference games.

    Key stat

89.8 - The Florida Gators are averaging 89.8 points per game this season – third best in the nation – ahead of Monday’s date with Stetson. With six players averaging at least 10 points per game, the Gators have now covered in nine of their last 13 games overall.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Ahmad Bradshaw, New York Giants – Bradshaw hoped to be able to suit up for Monday’s home game against the New Orleans Saints, but he has been ruled out with his foot injury. Bradshaw has missed four weeks with a cracked bone in his foot and Brandon Jacobs has struggled with the lead back role. Jacobs rushed for just 21 yards on 12 carries last week against Philadelphia.

    Game of the day

New York Giants at New Orleans Saints (-7.5, 51.5)

    Notable quotable

"I told the guys in the locker room it's a long season. This is November. This is why we played the four games we've played so far is to get challenged, to see what we've done well and things we need to make adjustments on. We're gonna keep positive." – Memphis Tigers coach Josh Pastner following a 91-88 overtime loss to Georgetown in the Maui Invitational final. The Tigers have dropped three straight against the spread ahead of Monday’s date with Jackson State.

    Notes and tips

Most books opened with the New Orleans Saints set around -6.5 or -7 for their Monday night tilt with the New York Giants, but there has been significant movement on the line since then. As of Sunday evening, some online shops had the Saints set as high as -9 while others were still serving Saints -7.5. About 56 percent of *********** Consensus bettors were siding with New Orleans.

Dallas Stars goaltender Kari Lehtonen left Saturday's game against the Phoenix Coyotes with a groin injury. He was assisted off the ice and did not return. Lehtonen has had an outstanding season, compiling a 13-4-1 record and 2.35 goals-against average.

New York Giants linebacker Michael Boley will miss his second straight contest when he sits out Monday's game against the New Orleans Saints. Boley suffered a hamstring injury during a Nov. 13 contest against the San Francisco 49ers. He did not make the trip to New Orleans. The 29-year-old Boley has recorded 59 tackles and one sack in nine games this season.

      Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

-- Dayton Flyers won the Disney tournament in Orlando, 86-70 over the favored Minnesota Gophers. Good weekend for Archie Miller.

-- Saint Louis won the Disney tournament in Anaheim, 83-63 over the Oklahoma Sooners. Big weekend for the Atlantic 14.

-- Mariners got catcher John Jaso in a trade with the Rays; in 2010, Jaso had 169 at-bats out of the leadoff spot for Tampa Bay.

-- 18 different high schools had at least one player on both sides of the Florida-Florida State game Saturday night.

-- Patriots opened as a 21-point favorite over Indianapolis next week.

-- 99th Grey Cup in Vancouver was won by the host BC Lions, 34-23 over Winnipeg. Lions started the season 1-6, but lost only once more the rest of the way. 5th Grey Cup title for coach Wally Buono.

      **********************

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday.........

      13) Philly's season disintegrated into garbage time Sunday night, as New England averaged 10.1 yards/pass attempt in a 38-20 win at Philly that all but ended the Eagles' season. Philly led 10-0 early but that didn't last.

      12) Eagles are 4-7, but have scored six more points than they've allowed. Giants are 6-4, but have scored exact same amount as they've allowed.

      11) Three weeks ago, Patrick Peterson beat the Rams with a 99-yard punt return in OT; it happens. Once. You never let it happen again, especially with a talented kid like Peterson, who had three punt return TDs in his first 11 pro games. Punt the ball out of bounds. Please.

But no. Peterson had an 80-yard punt return for a TD Sunday, as Arizona won in St Louis for the 7th year in a row, 23-20. Punter Donnie Jones did take blame for Peterson's TD, but thats BS; its the coach's fault. Punt the goddamn ball out of bounds. Don't let Peterson beat you. Period.

      10) Matt Leinart didn't last a half as Houston's starting QB; he broke his collarbone and is done for the year. No great loss; he throw the softest ball I've seen in the NFL since the hideous Pat Haden. Rookie TJ Yates came in, didn't screw things up, as Houston won 20-10 in Jacksonville.

As far as the Jaguars are concerned, someone has a lot of coaching to do if Blaine Gabbert is going to be a franchise QB in the NFL. Playing him now is either a disservice to the kid, a way to get the franchise to LA, or both.

      9) Buffalo won four of its first five games, scoring 32.8 ppg; since then, Bills are 1-5, averaging 16.2 ppg. They were the better team Sunday, but got beat late at Swamp Stadium. Bills needed to win this game.

      8) More jackass behavior by a WR: Buffalo's Stevie Johnson got 15-yard penalty for mocking Plaxico Burress after scoring a TD that put Buffalo ahead 14-7. Jets wound up with ball on Bills' 36-yard line, scored a tying TD and went on to win the game 28-24. At some point, can't you just be happy you scored and go back to the bench? I guess not......

      7) Only 53 offensive TDs in 15 games so far this week, 14 of which came on drives of less than 50 yards. Both defensive TDs were scored by teams who lost, which is highly unusual.

Road teams are 10-4-1 vs spread so far this week.

      6) Sebastian Janikowski kicked six FGs, Shane Lechler had an 80-yard punt with no return, as Oakland beat the Bears 25-20, thanks to a 20-yard edge in average starting field position. Hanie threw an INT on screen pass just before halftime, which swung the game in Oakland's favor.

      5) Rex Grossman somehow passed for 306 yards, averaging 8.5 yards per attempt, as Washington snapped out of a 5-game skid with a 23-17 win at Seattle, which is a very hard team to figure.

      4) Chris Johnson awoke from a year-long slump, ran ball for 190 yards in Tennessee's rainy 23-17 win over the Bucs. Nine turnovers, two offensive TD's tell you all you need to know about this game.

      3) Colts pretty much clinched the first pick in next April's draft after its 27-19 home loss to Carolina. Next questions: who will they pick, or will they be the ones doing the picking?

      2) Denver is now 5-1 with Tim Tebow as starting QB; Chargers have lost six games in a row after Broncos' 16-13 win in San Diego, before 65,000 very frustrated people at Qualcomm Sunday.

      1) Eagles have now lost eight of their last nine home games. Go figure.

Ice picks: Monday's best NHL bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Jose Sharks at Los Angeles Kings (-115, 5)

When the Los Angeles Kings brought Mike Richards over from Philadelphia last offseason, they thought he would go a long way in helping generate some offensive consistency. A quarter of the way through the season, Richards is doing his job, but the Kings’ offense is still sputtering.

Richards sits tied for the team lead in scoring with 10 goals, but L.A. sits 23rd in the league scoring just 2.3 goals per game

"We need a better shot mentality, as a group,” Kings coach Terry Murray told reporters. We've always talked about that. That still is a need that we talk about in our meetings. If we just start with that and have people at the net, I think good things will start to happen with it."

That’s if they commit to getting to the net. The Kings often get stuck playing on the perimeter and until they start getting their noses dirty, they’ll have a tough time scoring.

        Pick: Sharks

Dallas Stars at Colorado Avalanche (-135, 5.5)

After a blazing start to the season, the Dallas Stars have come back down to earth a bit. They have dropped seven of their last nine overall and now could be without starting goaltender Kari Lehtonen for a while.

Lehtonen left Saturday’s 3-0 loss at Phoenix with an apparent groin injury and has been placed on injured reserve. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Captain Brenden Morrow, Alex Goligoski and Adam Burish were already on the shelf before Lehtonen, Trevor Daley and Vernon Fiddler were injured Saturday.
"It's sticking with that full 60 that we talk about," Steve Ott said. "It's sticking with our structure. It's sticking with the program. Nine out of 10 times it usually pays off.

"If we continue to stick with that mentality, were going to be in games. We may not win every game, but we're going to be in every game and have a chance to win every game."

The Stars’ depth was questionable even before this rash of injuries, so they could be in trouble for a while.

        Pick: Avalanche

Pucking the trends: This week's best NHL bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week, we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in the National Hockey League.

        HOT TEAM: Boston Bruins

Well, it took awhile but is looks as though the Boston Bruins have finally shook their Stanley Cup hangover.

Boston has strolled through November and with one game left in the month, the Bruins are still unbeaten in regulation, going 11-0-1. The goaltending duo of Tim Thomas and Tuukka Rask has been outstanding - the Bruins have three shutouts in that stretch - while the offense has found new life, scoring five or more goals six times on this run.

With 12 goals and 23 points, sophomore sensation Tyler Seguin is leading the way, and Seguin often didn’t make the lineup during the playoffs last season.

The Northeast race is tight right now, with Toronto, Buffalo, Montreal and even Ottawa in the mix. But Boston has more speed and skill than all of those teams, and it might just be a matter of time before the Bruins separate themselves from everyone.

        COLD TEAM: Washington Capitals

The enigma that is the Washington Capitals in the Bruce Boudreau Era has returned. After a hot start, in which people were led to believe that maybe this team finally had it all figured out, along came November, and the mystery resurfaced.

The Rangers and Sabres are quality Eastern Conference teams and should make the postseason. But in a back-to-back stretch over 24 hours, those two clubs should not have their way with the Capitals.

Yet that’s exactly what happened, as New York dumped Washington, 6-3, on Friday, before Buffalo cruised past the Capitals, 5-1, on Saturday. In fact, Washington has now lost six of the last eight games and some of the scores have been alarming - 7-1 to the Maple Leafs in Toronto?

Center Nicklas Backstrom is having a tremendous season, with seven goals and 25 points, and perhaps an upcoming three-game home stand will help right the ship. For now though, Washington, with its hefty price tag at the window, has to be considered a consistent fade option.

        OVER PLAY: Anaheim Ducks

There seems to be too much talent on this roster for Anaheim to be in last place, but for totals players, that is not your problem. The Ducks have been lax on defense and it’s cost them.

Anaheim, after a 6-5 loss to Chicago on Friday that was an over-player’s delight, had engineered four consecutive overs headed in a Sunday date against Toronto at home. Prior to the date versus the Maple Leafs, Anaheim had allowed four or more goals seven times in November.

Backup goaltender Dan Ellis has been adequate, but the Ducks need more out of incumbent Jonas Hiller, who through Saturday was 5-9-4 with a 3.17 goals-against average and an .899 save percentage. Not good enough for a netminder who has won at least 26 games each of the last two seasons.

Anaheim is in the midst of a six-game home stand, so maybe the Ducks can figure it out away from the road.

        UNDER PLAY: San Jose Sharks

The Pacific Division race is shaping up to be a beauty, with four teams - San Jose, Phoenix, Dallas and Los Angeles - wrapped up in a neat little scrum right now. Everyone but Anaheim, for the time being, has a shot.

But the Sharks, with regards to talent, skill, depth, and even motivation, may be the best of that group. As the games get tighter, and points become more precious, it’s good to know the Sharks can slow it down and grind out games with the best of them.

That’s what they’ve clearly been doing. San Jose has won four of the last five games. Heading into Monday’s game with the Kings in Los Angeles, San Jose had orchestrated four consecutive unders, and six of the last seven have finished below the total.

Beginning Thursday, the Sharks have a four-game home stand, so perhaps with little travel to worry about, this run continues.

        Surveying the schedule:

** It’s always important to highlight the Winnipeg Jets and their schedule, as there will always be clear opportunities to snag trends. They are currently on a nice break from their long road trips, so maybe this is a chance to fatten up at home. Tuesday’s game against Ottawa is the first of five consecutive games in Winnipeg, a stretch that doesn’t end until Dec. 9.

** The Penguins, and Sidney Crosby, will get to see what life is like on the road with their superstar back in the mix this week. Pittsburgh won in Montreal, 4-3, on Saturday, opening a stretch in which it will play six of seven games away from the Consol Energy Center. That is a stretch that continues Tuesday, at the Rangers and doesn’t end until Dec. 10.

              Armadillo's Write-Up

              Monday, November 28

Louisville is 5-0, allowing just 46 ppg, but they haven't played a top 100 team yet; #64 Long Beach State is overscheduled with road games, but they've won at Pitt, lost in OT at San Diego State and at Montana by a hoop. Big East home favorites are 9-18 vs spread, 2-5 if spread is single digits; Big West road underdogs are 10-10, 5-3 if spread is single digits. Cardinals covered three of four games as a favorite this year.

3-4 UL-Lafayette lost both its true road games, by 1 at San Francisco, 19 at Duquesne (only top 100 team they've faced); Cajuns are 1-2 as an underdog. Kent State hasn't played in six days since loss to Cleveland State; they do have an upset win at West Virginia. ULL is shooting just 63.4% from foul line for season. MAC home favorites are 7-4 vs spread; Sun Belt road underdogs of 13+ points are 10-5.

Akron already has win as 9-point dog at Mississipi State; Zips have an experienced team (like Kent State) that can give young West Virginia a problem. Zips' two losses are by 3-5 points. Mountaineers are 3-1, all at home, with wins by 7-35-35, with 78-71 win vs Oral Roberts their only top 100 win. Big East home favorites are 9-18 vs spread, 7-13 if spread is double digits; MAC double digit road underdogs are 5-3.

Vanderbilt is 5-1, losing to Cleveland State; their best wins are 69-62 vs #62 NC State, 78-64 over #63 Oregon. Commodores are 2-2 as faves so far this year. #24 Xavier is 4-0 but playing first road game; best team they've played was 70-56 win over #78 Georgia in last game. SEC home favorites are 9-12-1 vs spread, 2-1 if spread is single digits; Atlantic 14 road underdogs are 16-9, 8-3 if spread is 5 or less.

Only two teams to beat 4-2 Georgia are ranked in top 25 (Cal/Xavier). Dawgs were Kansas City early last week; Xavier game was first true road tilt, so they've been on road a lot. Colorado is 3-2, losing by 9 to Wichita State in its only game vs top 100 team. Buffs beat Air Force in OT last game. Pac-12 home favorites of less than 8 points are 0-4 vs spread; SEC road underdogs of 9 or less points are 5-3.

5-1 Stanford is 4-0 as a favorite this year, 2-0 at home, winning by 16-12 points; Cardinal had Syracuse on ropes in NYC last game, but died down stretch of 69-63 loss. Extremely young Pacific squad is 0-2 vs D-I clubs, losing by 24 at Nevada, by 5 at Hawai'i. Pac-12 double digit home faves are 6-12 vs spread; Big West double digit road underdogs are 5-7. Both teams been travelling; this is likely to be sloppy game.

UCLA has shown little enthusiasm or sharpness in losing its first four games vs D-I foes, already losing as 11 and 14-point favorites, so until they show something, hard to back them. Pepperdine won at Arizona State, then lost at Bakersfield, but is coming off of OT win at UTSA in last game. WCC road underdogs are 6-7-2 vs spread, 2-3-1 if spread is double digits; Pac-12 double digit home favorites are 6-12.

Montana State is 1-3 vs D-I opponents, losing by 6 at Arizona State, 12 vs Seattle, 9 at Idaho (they beat winless Utah). San Jose State is 1-3 vs D-I foes, with only win by point over poor Cal-Irvine team. WAC single digit home favorites are 3-5 vs spread; Big Sky road underdogs are 13-6, 5-4 if spread is single digits. Spartans are making just 38.2% of 2-point shots, 29.2% from arc. Not lot to choose from on either side.

3-2 Tennessee is 5-0 vs spread; this is their first true road game after spending last week on Maui; Vols lost 89-82 at home to Oakland LY, in an upset. Best team Tennessee has beaten this year is NC-Greensboro, #272. 3-2 Oakland lost to Alabama by 17, Arkansas by 23; Grizzlies protect ball well but are making just 25.8% of 3-point shots. SEC single digit road favorites are 6-3 vs spread.

Long Beach State 49ers at Louisville Cardinals (-9.5, 133.5)

The Cardinals keep getting it done, even though coach Rick Pitino insists they’re just trying to make it through this month.

Louisville improved to 5-0 straight up with a 59-54 victory over Ohio as a big 16-point favorite.

"We are so banged up, we lack practice so much because our practices right now are so light and so easy, I'm just afraid to get somebody hurt,” coach Rick Pitino told reporters. “We're just trying to survive right now and hold off the enemy until the cavalry comes."

While the win didn’t get Cardinals bettors to the pay window, there were some positives to take from the game. Point guard Peyton Siva returned to the lineup after missing a couple of games with a sprained ankle. He had just four points and missed all seven of his shots from the floor, but did manage to play 33 minutes.

                  That’s a good sign.

                  Pick: Cardinals

Xavier Musketeers at Vanderbilt Commodores (-4, 141)

The Musketeers are coming off likely their best performance of the season and they’ll need to keep that momentum going in their biggest test of the season Monday.

Xavier moved to 4-0 straight up with a 70-56 win over Georgia as 10.5-point favorites, but it was never even as close as the score suggests.

"I thought the first 34 minutes or so we were as good as we've been all year," Xavier coach Chris Mack told reporters. "We played great for 33 minutes but we have to finish games a little bit better."

The Musketeers led by as many as 36 points and held Georgia to just 21.4 percent shooting from the floor.

Vanderbilt will come out gunning after covering just two of their last six overall.
