Tale of the tape: Miami Dolphins at New York Jets
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miami Dolphins at New York Jets (-6.5, 42.5)

It’s a stinker of a Monday night matchup but that isn’t going to stop degenerates like us from betting, so we better get our facts straight on these two teams.

Here’s the statistical breakdown of the Dolphins and Jets:

    OFFENSE

These two teams haven’t gotten the memo about offenses running the league.

Miami averages just 17.4 points per game and the Jets’ 24.2 mark would be much lower if it weren’t for the Jets’ three defensive/special teams scores.

The Dolphins gets more 1st downs (20.2 per game to 16) and more yards per offensive snap (5.4 to 4.9) than the Jets. Gang Green wants to get back to running the ball effectively but they’re near the bottom of the league in rushing yards per carry at 3.3. The ground game is one of the few areas the Phins excel in, picking up 4.3 yards per rush.

The Jets are better than the Fish in two key areas: on 3rd down and in the red zone. New York converts 33.3 percent of their 3rd downs, which isn’t great but better than last in the stat Miami (26.53%).

And inside the 20 is where the Jets are at their best. New York finds paydirt 63.64 percent of the time it gets in the red zone. The Dolphins, on the other hand, kick field goals 60 percent of the time they get inside the 20-yard line.

It’s a bit of a wash but we’ll give a slight advantage to the Jets in this category. The Dolphins are on their second quarterback and Brandon Marshall and Reggie Bush don’t seem like dangerous weapons anymore.

    Edge: Jets

    DEFENSE

Miami loves to run the ball and the Jets can’t stop the run. But New York still allows just 5.2 yards per offensive snap and the club gets to the quarterback (2.6 sacks per game) at a much higher rate than Miami.

The Dolphins secondary is one of the main reasons the stop unit can’t get off the field. Opponents are averaging 8.4 yards per pass attempt against the Fish. That’s tied with the Patriots for last in the league.

    Edge: Jets

    SPECIAL TEAMS

Joe McKnight is the man for the Jets on kick returns. The former USC Trojan is a home-run threat every time he touches the ball and he’s already taken one back to the house. Kicker Nick Folk is 7-for-7 on his field goal tries including makes from 50+.

On the flip side, Phins kicker Dan Carpenter has missed three of 12 attempts.

    Edge: Jets

    WORD ON THE STREET

"The team is a family and families have disagreements. Hey, we've lost three games in a row. Guys are frustrated. Guys are looking for answers. This group will be ready to go on Monday night. I have no questions about that." – Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer on the squabbling going on between teammates Santonio Holmes and Brandon Moore.

    PREDICTION: Jets 23, Dolphins 15

Good morning, jt! It's not really any work at all. All I'm doing is copying and pasting but I sure hope it helps now and then!
