    Unlikely pitchers for Tigers-Yankees finale

    October 5, 2011

NEW YORK (AP) - All the months of preparation, all the millions of dollars, all the hopes of the New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers come down to this: Ivan Nova vs. Doug Fister for a berth in the AL championship series.

Just three months ago, one had been demoted to the minor leagues and the other was languishing with a 3-12 record for last-place Seattle.

``Obviously it's not something I foresaw going on,'' Fister said Wednesday, about 15 hours after the Yankees stretched the first-round series to the limit with a 10-1 rout in Detroit.

On the first off-day of a series interrupted by rain in New York last weekend, there was a cloudless blue sky over Yankee Stadium. But both teams decided not to work out ahead of Thursday night's Game 5, which determines who will play defending AL champion Texas for a berth in the World Series.

``Tomorrow, I got the most important game in my life,'' Nova said, later adding: ``I don't see the reason to feel pressure. It's another game. Of course, it's the most important game of the season now.''

Both teams originally planned to use their aces for a Game 5, but those plans went down the drain when rain caused Friday's opener to be suspended after 1 1/2 innings and pushed back New York's CC Sabathia and Detroit's Justin Verlander to Game 3.

Just 24, he signed with the Yankees in 2004 and was still stuck in Class A four years later when the Yankees allowed him to be plucked away by San Diego in the winter-meeting draft. He didn't last long with the Padres, who returned him to New York near the end of spring training in 2009.

Nova started to move up the system that year, and by 2010 he made his big league debut. Following the retirement of Andy Pettitte last winter, Nova earned the No. 4 slot in the rotation during spring training behind Sabathia, A.J. Burnett and Phil Hughes, and by the end of the regular season moved up to second because of Burnett's inconsistency and Hughes' injuries. But when Hughes came off the disabled list on July 3, the Yankees sent Nova to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

They brought him back 27 days later.

``Go down and work on a few things and make it so that we can never send you down again,'' Yankees manager Joe Girardi recalled telling Nova. ``A lot of times you'll hear through the grapevine a guy complaining through friends or other people. I never heard him complain. He just went about his business. You know what? He's made it so we can't send him down.''

Developing a slider and mixing his pitches better, Nova led major league rookies in wins with a 16-4 record and 3.70 ERA. In his postseason debut, he took over from Sabathia in the completion of Game 1 and pitched shutout ball until the ninth inning of the Yankees' 9-3 win.

``I think we really got out of the strike zone a little more in this series than I had hoped we would,'' Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. ``Hopefully, now that we've seen him, we'll have a little better idea the second time around. I think that usually holds true.''

Fister gave up six runs and seven hits in 4 2-3 innings after replacing Verlander in the opener. Acquired along with reliever David Pauley from Seattle for four players on July 30, he had the poorest run support of any AL pitcher at 1.97 runs per game at the time of the trade. He went 8-1 with the Tigers down the stretch.

``Yeah, I'm pitching with a different jersey on, but still approaching the game the same way,'' the 27-year-old old.

Unlike some players, and unlike Leyland, he doesn't hold to any superstitions.

``Really, I really don't have a routine. I go to the ballpark at a different time every day,'' Fister said. ``I don't have to go in and eat my bowl of Cheerios. I don't have to go in and run or whatever I do. It's just kind of a flow as I go and just kind of get a feel for the day.''

While the Yankees are trying to reach the AL championship for the third straight year, the Tigers want to get back for the first time since 2006, when they won the pennant but then lost in the World Series. Detroit has not lost consecutive games since Aug. 28-29.

``Our lineup, top to bottom, it's hard to beat us two games in a row,'' Brandon Inge said.

New York has not won the final game of a series pushed to the maximum since rallying past the Boston Red Sox in Game 7 of the 2003 ALCS. Detroit hasn't since beating St. Louis in Game 7 of the 1968 World Series.

In a sharp gray suit and purple tie, Leyland was dressed for success.

``We got a big game with the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium. It's a great scenario. It's great for baseball,'' he said. ``I wish I could tell you what's going to happen, but I don't know.''

Girardi, dressed more casually in a black sports shirt, knows that failure to get out of the first round would be considered a failure.

``We all understand what the goal is here, and that's no secret,'' he said. ``This is why guys go to work in November and start conditioning and doing all the things, and they start hitting in December. We play to win a trophy.''

NOTES: Leyland said Don Kelly will start at 3B and Magglio Ordonez in RF. ... Girardi said closer Mariano Rivera will be available for more than an inning and that Sabathia could appear in relief.

NY Yankees, Detroit Tigers ALDS Game 5 Preview

Robinson Cano leads the Bronx Bombers with 8 RBI in the series.
Doug Fister is probably in the last place he thought he'd be just a few short months ago. But then, Joe Girardi probably couldn't have imagined a few weeks ago having to turn to AJ Burnett in an elimination game during the playoffs.

Such are the strange twists and turns that baseball takes, especially during the postseason. Burnett delivered in ALDS Game 4 to help knot the series between the Detroit Tigers and New York Yankees, and force a decisive fifth game Thursday. Fister gets the call for Jim Leyland's Tigers in the 8:00 p.m. (ET) start from Yankee Stadium in New York. Girardi will send Ivan Nova to the mound in a strange rematch of Game 1 relievers.

The Yankees opened in the 155-160 chalk range, but that price is down to -150 and even a penny or two lower now. The Don Best odds screen is showing nine for Thursday's total.

Burnett got a lot of kudos for his effort Tuesday evening in Game 4, working into the sixth and allowing Detroit's only run in a 10-1 Yankees rout. But he also got a lot of help from Curtis Granderson just to survive a very shaky first inning. Burnett walked three to fill the sacks, then watched as Granderson made the first of two big grabs off the bat of Tigers right-fielder Don Kelly.

Granderson got caught misplaying the ball, but made up for the gaffe with a leaping catch going back in center. The play turned the whole game around.

Another diving catch by Granderson going into left-center stopped a would-be Detroit rally in the sixth. New York's lineup exploded for six runs in the eighth off Tigers relievers to turn the contest into a laugher, all while Yanks relievers were posting 3 1/3-innings of hitless baseball with six strikeouts.

Fister (13-18, 3.01) and Nova (19-8, 3.66) picked things up in the completion of Game 1 this past Saturday after rain halted things early in the proceedings the night before. The two kept the game 1-1 until the Yankees lineup finally wore Fister down in the fifth and sixth innings, scoring six times against him over 4 2/3 innings.

Nova put in 6 1/3-innings of work that evening, allowing two Detroit runs and striking out five in the eventual 9-3 New York win. Robinson Cano's grand slam in the sixth delivered the knockout punch.

The slam came off Tigers reliever Al Albuquerque who was again ineffective when called upon in Game 4. Detroit's 'pen has been volatile the entire series, allowing 11 earned runs in 9 1/3 frames.

Yankees relievers have countered with a 1.74 ERA over 10 1/3 innings, striking out 13 along the way.

Who might enter in relief if either or both starters get into early trouble remains to be seen. Max Scherzer, who started Game 2 for the Tigers on Sunday, could be seen if Fister can't hack it. Could there be a Justin Verlander sighting as well? He burned through 120 pitches on Monday in Game 3, two days after 25 tosses at the start of Game 1. But given the performance of his bullpen so far, Leyland could be at least tempted to call on his ace one more time.

Girardi is definitely in better shape with his bullpen, and closer Mariano Rivera is a candidate to be called upon in the eighth if needed. Baseball's all-time saves leader has made just one appearance so far, that at the very end of the completion of Game 1 last Saturday. Boone Logan, Cory Wade, David Robertson and Rafael Soriano make for a nice long bridge for Girardi to get to Rivera.

Ted Barrett is in line for the plate if the normal rotation umpire is followed. Crew chief Gerry Davis, who worked Game 3, could opt to work the plate himself. An 18-year veteran in his 12th postseason series, Barrett was 17-13-2 to the 'over' during the regular season, and worked three Yankees games, including Nova's final start on Sept. 25 (NY lost, 'over'). He didn't call a Tigers game in 2011.

After a soggy weekend in New York for Games 1 and 2, it should be a beautiful night for baseball at Yankee Stadium for Game 5. Clear skies and a crisp 60ºF at first pitch with a light north breeze (3B to 1B) is expected.

Tigers-Yankees play decisive Game 5 Thursday

            DETROIT TIGERS

            NEW YORK YANKEES

            ALDS Game 5 - Series tied 2-2
First pitch: Thursday, 8:35 p.m. EDT
Line: New York -160, Detroit +150, Total: 9

The Yankees will host the Tigers on Thursday night for a chance to play in the American League Championship Series. New York put a hurting on Detroit in Game 4, beating the Tigers 10-1 and forcing this decisive Game 5.

Starting for the Tigers will be the lanky right-hander Doug Fister (11-13, 2.83 ERA). Fister started the resumed Game 1 on Saturday and was shelled for six runs and seven hits in just 4.2 innings. Opposing Fister will be the youngster Ivan Nova (16-4, 3.70 ERA) who also started the resumed game on Saturday and pitched very well, allowing two runs on four hits in 6.1 innings of the 9-3 victory. The Yanks have been terrific as a home favorite of -150 to -175 in which they are 22-5, and are also 8-1 in the past nine home games with Nova starting on the mound. The Tigers are 4-16 on the road after an off-day since the start of 2010. With those trends leaning towards the Yankees, Nova and NEW YORK will win Game 5 in front of a huge and rowdy home crowd.

These two highly-rated FoxSheets trends also lean towards the Yankees.

Play Against- All underdogs with a money line of +150 or more (DETROIT) - average hitting team (AVG = .265 to .279) against a good starting pitcher (ERA <=4.20) -AL, with an on base percentage of .350 or better over their last 20 games. (53-7 over the last 5 seasons.) (88.3%, +40.5 units. Rating = 4*).

Play On- Home favorites with a money line of -110 or higher (NY YANKEES) - cold hitting team - batting .240 or worse over their last 10 games against opponent starting a pitcher who gave up <=1 earned runs in his last 2 outings. (86-32 over the last 5 seasons.) (72.9%, +43.8 units. Rating = 3*).

The Tigers as a team have been terrific bouncing back after losses recently. They have not dropped back-to-back games since August 28-29. Detroit is looking to get back to the ALCS for the fist time since 2006 when they advanced but eventually lost in the World Series. Despite his 11-13 overall record, Fister was phenomenal after his midseason trade to Detroit, going 8-1 with a 1.79 ERA, 57 K and just five walks in 70.1 innings in a Tigers uniform. He also pitched a quality outing in his only start versus New York this year, allowing three runs and seven hits in seven innings of work in his final game with Seattle.

Nova has been a pleasant surprise for Yankee fans all year and now will get the ball in the biggest game of the year. Prior to Saturday’s appearance, Nova had only thrown two relief innings against Detroit in his career, but didn’t look scared in Game 1 when he pitched a gem in the 9-3 victory. The 24-year-old from the Dominican led all rookies with 16 wins and has not been beaten in his last 17 outings, going 13-0 with a 3.22 ERA over that span. Available for relief will be the Yankees ace CC Sabathia, who could be used in the later innings of a tight game. Sabathia threw 106 pitches in Monday’s Game 3 loss.

Halladay looks to pitch Phils into NLCS

                  ST. LOUIS CARDINALS

                  at PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES

                  NLDS Game 5 - Series tied 2-2
First pitch: Friday, 8:35 p.m. EDT
Line: Philadelphia -180, St. Louis +170, Total: 7

They’re one game away from elimination, but the Phillies are still in a good place when they host St. Louis for Game 5 on Friday. In Philadelphia, with Roy Halladay on the mound, is a fine place to be.

Halladay’s final line from Game 1 wasn’t eye-popping (8 innings, 3 runs), but after giving up a first-inning, three-run homer to Lance Berkman, he went on to allow just one base runner over 7.2 innings of shutout ball. He retired the last 21 batters he faced. Cardinals starter Chris Carpenter finished the regular season strong but, pitching on three-days rest in Game 2, allowed four runs over just three innings. The Cardinals came back to steal Game 2 in Philly, and the money line makes St. Louis a tempting pick. But beating Halladay is too monumental a task. And the FoxSheets have a three-star trend to confirm PHILADELPHIA is the pick:

Play On - All favorites with a money line of -175 to -250 (PHILADELPHIA) - starting a pitcher who walked <=1 hitters each of his last 2 outings against opponent with a hot starting pitcher- ERA less than 2.50 over his last 5 starts. (46-8 since 1997, 85.2%, +31.1 units. Rating = 3*).

After an uncharacteristically up-and-down year, Carpenter (11-9, 3.56 ERA) came on strong in September. He went 3-0 with a 1.13 ERA over his last five regular-season starts. That included eight shutout innings in a win at Philadelphia on September 18, but Philly did not have Ryan Howard in the lineup for that game and still had nine batters reach base.

In Game 2, Carpenter gave up five hits and walked three in three innings before being lifted for a pinch-hitter. Manager Tony La Russa complained that Carpenter was getting squeezed by home plate umpire Jerry Meals. Regardless, the outing made it two disappointing playoff starts in a row for Carpenter. In Game 1 of the 2009 NLDS, he allowed four runs and 14 base runners over five innings in a loss to the Dodgers. In six career postseason road starts, Carpenter has a 5.29 ERA.

Halladay (20-6, 2.38 ERA) is 3-1 with a 2.37 ERA career against St. Louis. The Cardinals beat him on September 19 in Philadelphia, scoring four runs in eight innings as Halladay surprisingly walked four batters in a game for the first time since June 2008. It was a rare home loss for the Phils with Halladay on the mound, as they’re 13-3 in his Citizens Bank Park starts this year.

The Cards are getting some good news on the injury front with Matt Holliday back in the lineup. After singling in a pinch-hitting appearance in Game 3, Holliday went 1-for-3 with a HBP and two runs in the Game 4 victory. Berkman is 3-for-8 with two home runs and two walks in his career against Halladay. However, Albert Pujols is only 2-for-13 (with a double and two walks) against the reigning Cy Young Award winner.

D-backs-Brewers play decisive Game 5 Thursday

                    ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS

                    at MILWAUKEE BREWERS

                    NLDS Game 5 - Series tied 2-2
First pitch: Friday, 5:05 p.m. EDT
                    Line: Milwaukee -145, Arizona +135, Total: 7.5

The Brewers return to Milwaukee Friday night to host Arizona for Game 5 with a trip to the NLCS on the line.

Winning two home games then dropping two road games was no surprise for Milwaukee, who own baseball’s best home record (59-24), but have the worst road mark among playoff teams (39-44). The pitching matchup will be a rematch from Game 1, when Milwaukee’s Yovani Gallardo threw eight innings of one-run ball, allowing five base runners and striking out nine in a 4-1 Brewers win. While the Brew Crew had their momentum halted in Arizona, Milwaukee is 14-3 at home with Gallardo on the mound this year, and the righty is a perfect 6-0 with a 1.18 ERA over six career starts against the D-backs. The FoxSheets also have a Gallardo-based trend backing MILWAUKEE as the pick.

GALLARDO is 19-2 (90.5%, +17.3 Units) against the money line vs. an NL team with an on base percentage .325 or worse in the second half of the season over the last 2 seasons. (Team's Record). The average score was GALLARDO 6.1, OPPONENT 2.9 - (Rating = 3*).

D-backs starter Ian Kennedy (21-5, 2.95 ERA) has been very good on the road this year, going 10-3 with a 3.33 ERA while Arizona won 12 of those 16 outings. He had finished the regular season strong, going 13-1 with a 2.26 ERA in his final 15 starts, 14 of them Arizona wins.

But Kennedy hasn’t been particularly good against elite competition. In six starts against 2011 playoff teams, he’s 3-3 with a 4.93 ERA. The Brewers had 11 batters reach in 6.2 innings against him in Game 1, and Prince Fielder’s two-run home run chased him in the seventh inning. In 12 career at-bats against Kennedy, Fielder now has two home runs and a double. Ryan Braun, who’s 7-for-15 with four extra base hits in the NLDS, is 5-for-10 career against Kennedy.

Gallardo (18-10, 3.43 ERA) has been on fire of late, going 3-0 with a 1.59 ERA over his past four starts (all Brewers wins) while striking out 45 in 28.1 innings. He’s allowed four runs (one earned) over 15 career postseason innings.

He’ll be trying to slow down a Diamondbacks offense that had 18 runs, 24 hits and five home runs in Games 3 and 4 combined. One of the Arizona stars of the NLDS, Chris Young (6-for-14, 3 HR in the series), has just two singles in 16 career at-bats against Gallardo. Slugging rookie Paul Goldschmidt (5-for-11, 2 HR) did not play in Game 1 and has never faced Gallardo.
