What bettors need to know: Wednesday's NHL playoff action
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Philadelphia Flyers at Boston Bruins (-144, 5.5)

      Boston leads series 2-0

THE STORY: With all due respect to David Krejci, Vezina Trophy finalist Tim Thomas was truly "The Story" on Monday. Thomas turned aside a career-high 52 shots - including 32 after the second period - as the Boston Bruins recorded a 3-2 overtime victory over the Philadelphia Flyers in Game 2 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series. The All-Star netminder used his athleticism to stop the final 46 shots he faced to improve to 8-0 in the City of Brotherly Love. With the scene shifting to Beantown for Game 3 on Wednesday, Thomas and the third-seeded Bruins will look to push the second-seeded Flyers to the brink of elimination.

      TV: 7 ET, VERSUS, CBC

ABOUT THE BRUINS: After suffering a dislocated wrist in last year's semifinal series, Krejci capped the wild night by scoring 14 minutes into overtime on Monday. Philadelphia failed to clear its defensive zone and Nathan Horton collected the puck at the blue line and alertly fed Krejci, who wired a shot from just inside the right faceoff circle past Brian Boucher. Krejci now has three goals and an assist in the series. The Bruins have won all four of their overtime games in the playoffs. Chris Kelly and Brad Marchand scored 85 seconds apart in the first period to level the game at 2-2. Defenseman Adam McQuaid exited Game 2 in the first period after he slammed headfirst into the boards on a failed attempt to deliver an elbow on captain Mike Richards. Former Flyer defenseman Dennis Seidenberg is an impressive plus-7 in the series.

ABOUT THE FLYERS: Admittedly it's not all gloom and doom for Peter Laviolette's club after it dropped its first two games at home. One year ago, the Flyers overcame a 3-0 deficit to win the final four contests of their Eastern Conference semifinal series against the Bruins. James van Riemsdyk continues to have a solid postseason as he scored twice nearly nine minutes apart in the first period. For van Riemsdyk, who turns 22 on Wednesday, he has scored in five straight games and has seven tallies overall in the postseason. Philadelphia set a franchise record with 54 shots on goal during a playoff game. Boucher stopped 32 shots overall, despite leaving midway through the second period with an injury to his left side. He returned to start the third. Veteran defenseman Chris Pronger, who missed five of the Flyers' seven games in the conference quarterfinal series, sat out Game 2 with an undisclosed injury. He is questionable for Games 3 and 4.

WHO'S HOT/WHO’S NOT: Boston's Milan Lucic has failed to score a goal in 19 straight contests. He had a career-high 30 tallies in the regular season. Marchand has four goals and five assists in nine playoff games. Philadelphia All-Star Claude Giroux has nine assists in his last five contests.

SPECIAL TEAMS: The Flyers went 1-for-4 on the power play and are now 7-for-42 in the playoffs. For its part, Boston continues to shoot itself in the foot with the man advantage. The Bruins went 0-for-2 in Monday's tilt and is now 0-for-28 in the playoffs.

      TRENDS:

      * Underdog is 6-1 in the last seven meetings.
      * Road team is 6-1 in the last seven meetings.
      * Flyers are 0-4 in the last four meetings.

LAST WORD: "I think we’re going to go into Boston, we’re going to play a strong hockey game and we’re going to win the game,” Laviolette, on whether the Flyers can rebound in this series.

San Jose Sharks at Detroit Red Wings (-163, 5.5)

      San Jose leads series 2-0

THE STORY: The Detroit Red Wings have yet to discover their scoring touch against the San Jose Sharks in their Western Conference semifinal series. They'll need to find it when they host Game 3 at Joe Louis Arena on Wednesday to avoid falling into a 3-0 hole. After scoring 18 goals in its four-game sweep of the Phoenix Coyotes in the conference quarterfinals, Detroit has tallied just once in each of the two semifinal contests at San Jose, losing a pair of 2-1 decisions. The Red Wings netted the first goal of the series before allowing four straight by the Sharks, who have won six of the last seven playoff games between the clubs - all by one tally.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, VERSUS, TSN2, CSN California, FSN Detroit

ABOUT THE RED WINGS: Detroit was outshot in each of the two contests in San Jose but made strides in Game 2 after the Sharks registered a 46-25 advantage in the series opener, including a 7-1 edge in overtime. The Red Wings have been fortunate San Jose's power play has not been in top form as they have given the Sharks 11 opportunities thus far while allowing only two goals. Dating back to last year's conference semifinals and including the 2010-11 regular season, Detroit has lost 10 of its last 12 meetings with San Jose.

ABOUT THE SHARKS: San Jose's defense has gotten very involved offensively in the series. Dan Boyle recorded a pair of assists in Game 1 while both of the Sharks' goals on Sunday were scored by blue-liners. Ian White converted a power-play chance for his sixth point of the postseason and Niclas Wallin netted what proved to be the game-winner early in the third period. Of Wallin's four career playoff goals, all have decided a game and three have come in overtime.

WHO'S HOT/WHO'S NOT: Ryane Clowe helped set up both of San Jose's goals in Sunday's victory, giving him a team-leading nine points in the playoffs. Calder Trophy candidate Logan Couture has notched an assist in each game of the series. Pavel Datsyuk has assisted on both of Detroit's goals in the series. After missing the first-round matchup against Phoenix, Henrik Zetterberg scored on the power play in Game 2, his second contest since April 6.

SPECIAL TEAMS: San Jose is 4-for-34 (11.8 percent) on the power play in the postseason and Detroit has converted 21.7 percent (5-for-23) of its opportunities. Neither team has been exceptional on the penalty kill as the Sharks have successfully extinguished just 81.2 percent of their infractions while the Red Wings have allowed eight goals in 29 shorthanded situations for a 72.4 percent success rate.

      TRENDS:

      * Over is 4-0 in the last four meetings in Detroit.
      * Sharks are 5-0 in the last five meetings.
      * Favorite is 25-12 in the last 37 meetings.
      * Sharks are 8-20-1 in the last 29 meetings in Detroit.

LAST WORD: "It's a matter of bearing down and playing a little better defensively. And we've got to score more goals, too. Getting one goal, it's hard to win in the playoffs." - Detroit captain Nicklas Lidstrom on getting back into the series.

Ice picks: Wednesday's best NHL bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Jose Sharks at Detroit Red Wings (-170, 5.5)

Don’t expect the Sharks to be intimidated by Joe Louis Arena.

The team got a split there last year after taking a 2-0 lead following a pair of games in California. Now, San Jose will look to be even better. The Sharks entered that series having won a mere eight of their past 44 trips to the Motor City, but have fared much better since. Aside from splitting Games 3 and 4 there last spring, the Sharks claimed both regular season meetings at The Joe.

"I think we've played better there of late," Sharks forward Joe Pavelski said. "But the next game is going to be fresh, and there's not going to be any thought of previous games. They're going to be good and come out harder than they did in Game 2. So we're going to have to play harder."

Detroit goaltender Jimmy Howard also could use some home cooking. Despite allowing just four goals on 83 shots, the Sharks have managed to rattle him. By continually skating well into the crease before stopping, the San Jose attackers are showering with ice shards and getting under his skin.

"I don't know why they keep allowing them to do it,” Detroit defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom said. “The refs could stop it right away by calling it. And it's pretty obvious that they're trying to do it."

San Jose isn’t rattled, but Howard is. That trend should continue.

        Pick: San Jose

Philadelphia Flyers at Boston Bruins (-145, 5.5)

Brian Boucher expects to start in goal for the Flyers on Wednesday night. Will he? Well that’s anyone’s guess.

“Every time there’s a goalie change it grabs the attention of all the players,” Boucher said. “Anytime there’s a goalie change, everybody’s gonna snap back and be like, ‘Whoa, we need to wake up, or change the way we’re playing.’ I just happened to be the benefactor of that the last two times it’s happened.”

But this time he might be the one feeling the pinch. Boucher stopped 32 of 35 shots and briefly missed some time in the second period as he nursed a hand injury. Rookie Sergei Bobrovsky tended the net in his place, and will likely would be his replacement if coach Peter Laviolette opts to make a switch. Boucher, however, wasn’t up to the task and a turnover in the Flyers zone resulted in a 3-2 overtime loss.

It wasn’t great, but it still was infinitely better than a 7-3 defeat in Game 1 that saw him cough up five goals on just 23 shots. Still, no one is sure if it will be enough to put him back between the pipes for a must win.

"I think there are only so many times you can make a change before running out of nine lives," Boucher said. "You know, we make changes in our lineup all the time. Guys just prepare. We don't think about those external things. But I will prepare the same way I do every day and we will see what happens."

Oh, and it gets worse. Boston has yet to score a power play goal in the series and have failed to convert on 30 straight chances. If the Bruins finally click, it might be a quick night for Boucher.

        Pick: Bruins

Hot lines: Wednesday's best MLB bets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Blue Jays at Tampa Bay Rays (-115, 8)

The Rays hope that getting a big part of their lineup back can help their offensive woes, just as the Jays could be without their biggest slugger. Evan Longoria was activated for Tuesday’s game after hitting the shelf on April 2 with an oblique injury.

"I think this is one of those things, again I've never experienced this so I don't know how it will react, but I've played and felt pretty much the same coming into the ballpark every day as I did the day before," Longoria told reporters. "If all stays the same, I hope to go everyday."

That would be a major boost for the Rays’ offense, which is hitting just .242 as a team.

Meanwhile, Toronto’s Jose Bautista will likely be out for at least a couple of days with a neck problem and is expected to undergo an MRI. He already has nine homers on the year, so his pop will definitely be missed.

Brandon Morrow and Jeremy Hellickson have both been pretty good on the hill this year so we'll go with the under.

                Pick: Under

Cleveland Indians at Oakland Athletics (-145, 7)

Now don’t get us wrong, the Cleveland Indians have tons to celebrate about. They sit atop the league’s money standings and have probably been the biggest surprise of the early baseball season.

But that doesn’t excuse Indians outfielder Shin-Soo Choo for getting busted a DUI early Monday morning before the team shipped out to Oakland. Apparently, Choo blew twice the .08 legal limit.

Anyway, that’s a bit beside the point. Choo was off to a decent start with four homers and 15 RBIs to go along with a .250 batting average, while Cleveland had put up at least five runs in five of six straight wins heading into the first game of the club’s series with Oakland. Still the Indians aren’t satisfied.

"We're not putting godly statistics up there," backup outfielder Shelley Duncan told reporters. "And we still have a couple guys who haven't really started hitting, and we still have some young guys who are going to get better and better."

That much is true. The Indians haven’t been as good on the road, obviously, but we’ll jump at this price tag.

                Pick: Indians
