    Daily Sports Roundup: May 4

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The NBA playoffs continue in Chicago and Los Angeles, the Red Sox play host to the Angels, and the Mets get a visit from the Giants.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

On the NBA's playoff schedule for Wednesday it's Atlanta at Chicago and Dallas at the Lakers, with the Hawks and Mavericks both leading those best-of-seven second-round series by 1-0 margins. Atlanta won Game 1 of their set 103-95 on the road on Monday night, with Joe Johnson pouring in 34 points in the victory. Derrick Rose had 24 points in the loss for Chicago. Dallas edged the Lakers 96-94 in Los Angeles in Game 1 of their set on Monday night, as Dirk Nowitzki picked up 28 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Mavs' attack. Kobe Bryant had a game-high 36 points in Monday's loss for Los Angeles.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

On the American League schedule for Wednesday it's Minnesota at the White Sox, Toronto at Tampa Bay, the Yankees at Detroit, Baltimore at Kansas City, Cleveland at Oakland, Texas at Seattle, and the Angels at Boston. Los Angeles' Ervin Santana (1-3, 4.89 ERA) will take on Boston's Josh Beckett (2-1, 2.65 ERA) in that last matchup. Righthander Santana faced the Red Sox on April 23, giving up five runs on nine hits over seven innings of work in a defeat. Righthander Beckett took the mound against the Angels on April 21, allowing only two runs on three hits in eight innings for a no-decision.

The National League on Wednesday then offers up Houston at Cincinnati, the Cubs at the Dodgers, Pittsburgh at San Diego, Washington at Philadelphia, Milwaukee at Atlanta, Florida at St. Louis, Colorado at Arizona, and San Francisco at the Mets. The Giants will go with Tim Lincecum (2-3, 2.90 ERA) on Wednesday, while New York counters with Chris Capuano (2-2, 6.04 ERA). Righthander Lincecum was tagged with a loss by the Nationals last time out, giving up just three runs in seven innings. Lefthander Capuano also started against the Nats last game, surrendering four runs in 5 2-3 innings.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are three games on the NHL's playoff schedule for Wednesday, with Game 4 between the Capitals and Lightning in Tampa Bay, Game 3 between the Flyers and Bruins in Boston, and Game 3 between the Sharks and Red Wings in Detroit. The Sharks took a 2-0 lead in their best-of-seven second-round Western Conference series with a 2-1 home win in Game 2 on Sunday. Ian White and Niclas Wallin had the goals for San Jose in that victory, while Antti Niemi stopped 33 of 34 Detroit shots. Henrik Zetterberg had the lone Detroit goal in the losing cause, and Jimmy Howard made 35 stops. Oddsmakers have Detroit as a -170 favorite for Wednesday, with the total at 5.5.

Wednesday's betting tips: Man U may sit Rooney

      Who’s hot

NBA: Dallas is 10-0-1 against the spread (ATS) in its last 11 overall.

NHL: Boston has won four straight over Philadelphia.

NHL: Tampa Bay is 11-6 this season in the back end of back-to-backs.

MLB: The over is 7-0-1 in the New York Yankees’ last eight as an underdog.

      Who’s not

NBA: Los Angeles Lakers are 2-6 ATS in their last eight home games.

NHL: San Jose has won five straight against the Red Wings, but has just eight wins in its last 29 trips to Detroit.

MLB: The Chicago White Sox have lost each of John Danks’ last six starts.

      Key stat

4 – On the surface, it looks as though Kobe Bryant did all he could by pouring in 36 points in Los Angeles’ Game 1 loss to the Dallas Mavericks, but Kobe attempted just four shots inside of 10 feet, settling for outside jumpers all night. With Jason Kidd blanketing him, maybe Bryant’s sprained ankle is keeping him from taking it to the hole more than he’s letting on.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Wayne Rooney, Manchester United: Rooney is expected to sit out the second leg of Man U’s matchup with Schalke at Old Trafford to rest a hamstring injury after missing training on Tuesday. Javier Hernandez is also expected to be rested, leaving Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen to handle the striking duties.

      Game of the day

Dallas Mavericks at Los Angeles Lakers (-7, 187)

      Notable quotable

"It's tough when your best player is limping off the court with an injury that you know he's had before. It's tough, but right now, we have a game on Wednesday in less than 48 hours." - Bulls center Joakim Noah after Derrick Rose rolled his ankle again in Game 1’s loss. Rose practiced Tuesday and should start again on Wednesday, but this is starting to become a reoccurring theme and he isn’t attacking the hoop like he normally does.

      Notes and tips

Atlanta’s Jeff Teague got the call to start at point guard for the Hawks in Game 1 with Kirk Hinrich possibly out for the entire series and had a huge hand in the upset. He booked 10 points and five assists. However, it was his quickness and tenacity that was the real difference as he kept Derrick Rose in check all night at the defensive end of the floor. Chicago’s NBA MVP was just 11-of-27 from the field.

It looks as though the Detroit Red Wings are set to shake things up as they head home trailing the San Jose Sharks 2-0. Coach Mike Babcock split up linemates Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg during Tuesday’s practice. Zetterberg skated with Dan Cleary and Todd Bertuzzi, while Datsyuk was with Johan Franzen and Tomas Holmstrom. Detroit has scored just two goals over the first two games of the series.

Toronto Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista sat out Tuesday’s game against Tampa Bay with a sore neck and was scheduled to undergo an MRI. The early word is that he could be out of action for at least a couple of days, though more will be known once the results come back. Bautista is off to a blistering start with nine home runs and a .357 batting average so far.

        Wednesday's six-pack

-- CBS hasn’t announced whether its picking up CSI: NY for an 8th season- they will by May 18. No excuse not to pick it up; its quality TV.

-- Royals are first team in major leagues this season with three guys with 20+ RBI.

-- General Motors has sold 27% more cars to this point this year than it did to the same point LY.

-- Over 21 million hot dogs were sold at big league ballparks last season, and I didn’t even go to a game.

-- Brandon Belt is hitting .500 in ten games at AAA; when he returns to the majors (soon), he’ll be an outfielder, not a 1B, since Aubrey Huff has proven he can’t play outfield.

-- Rumor is that Arizona Cardinals want Marc Bulger to be their QB this year, to which I reply: a) Why? And b) God, he's freakin' awful. I hope they get him.

        ********************

        Wednesday's List of 13: Random mid-week stuff..........

        13) Kobe Bryant was 14-29 from floor in Game 1 vs Dallas, but none of the 14 field goals were from closer than 11 feet. Be interested to see if he goes towards the hoop more in Game 2.

        12) One of many reasons I think Clint Hurdle is a terrific manager: Pirates were 17-64 on the road LY. So far this year, they’re already 10-8 on foreign soil. Pittsburgh is an improved team under Hurdle.

        11) Bronx Bomber prospect Jesus Montero is hitting .393 in AAA, but he has two problems: a) he doesn’t project as a catcher in the bigs and b) he didn’t draw a walk in April (he had two Monday). Bronx will try to trade Montero for an established major league pitcher in July.

        10) Pac-10’s TV deal with ESPN/FOX is worth $18.75M a year per school; all in all, its worth $25M more a year than what the NHL got in its TV package.

        9) Former Purdue coach (current St John’s assistant) Gene Keady shot a hole-in-one at a charity golf tournament in Las Vegas last week.

        8) Cincinnati Bengals don’t have an indoor practice facility, but the high school Ryan Mallett went to has one. Go figure.

        7) One of many reasons sports are fun: Mark Buehrle has a career record of 150-113 in 341 major league starts, so he’s having a really good career, but when he was drafted, it was in the 38th round, so none of the 30 big league teams thought too much of him. They were all wrong.

        6) Weather in Louisville this week has been awful, which could affect the Kentucky Derby Saturday. That’s one event I have no desire to attend; too crowded, too many people trying to look rich.

        5) Madison Bumgarner is 0-5 this year in his first six starts; in fairness, in the five losses, the Giants scored a total of three runs.

        4) 218 poker players were invited to join Federated Sports and Gaming this week, an attempt to create a poker tour much like the PGA Tour is with golf. Annie Duke is the tour’s first commissioner.

        3) Bartolo Colon is leading MLB in an odd but interesting stat: 42.8% of his pitches that were taken have been called strikes, more than anyone else in the major leagues.

        2) Andre Ethier is the 40th player in the last 70 years to have a hitting streak of 28+ games. Pete Rose (1978) is the last player with a streak of 40+ games.

        1) On rosters of the eight NBA teams still playing, there are 17 players from SEC schools, 14 from ACC/Pac-10 schools, 13 from Big 12 teams, 12 from the Big East and eight from the Big 11.

                Write-Up

                Wednesday, May 4

Over is 6-0 so far in second round, after unders dominated in first round; favorites are 3-3 in this round, but 1-3 outside the Miami series.

Rose/Boozer are both banged up for Bulls, who allowed Hawks to make 51.3% from floor in Game 1 upset loss; for whatever reason, Bulls were +17 in 16:08 with Korver on court, -25 in 31:52 when he was off floor. Atlanta only played six guys more than 8:13 in Game 1; Johnson made 12-18 from floor, Crawford had 22 off bench. Ton of pressure on Bulls to win here and avoid going to Atlanta down two games.

Dallas won its last three games by 11-7-2 points after blowing huge lead in Game 4 at Portland. Bryant was 14-29 with no assists in Game 1 and none of the 14 hoops were within 11 feet of basket, so Mavericks were able to keep him from going to tin and getting to foul line. Dallas bench was +33 in Game 1. Bryant took 29 shots, other four starters only 32, so as long as they keep Bryant from penetrating, they have a shot here.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What bettors need to know: Wednesday's NBA playoff action
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta Hawks at Chicago Bulls (-8.5, 180)

                    Atlanta leads series 1-0

THE STORY: The Atlanta Hawks were an afterthought when the postseason started. They are certainly at the forefront in the minds of the Chicago Bulls right now. The Hawks shocked the Bulls in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals, jumping out early and finishing strong while refusing to let Derrick Rose or the hostile crowd get to them. The pressure will be on Chicago when it hosts Game 2 on Wednesday, trying to prevent Atlanta from taking a commanding 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven set.

                    TV: 8 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE BULLS: Chicago shot under 30 percent in the first quarter and Rose did not score a point until less than five minutes remained in the first half. For all of their troubles, the Bulls still managed to take the lead in the third quarter. The problem was the end of the third and into the fourth, as the Hawks shredded the Bulls’ league-best defense by bridging the final two quarters with a 27-9 burst. Rose ended up with 24 points and 10 assists, but struggled to shoot 11-of-27 from the floor and did not attempt a free throw after averaging 12 attempts from the line in the first round.

ABOUT THE HAWKS: Joe Johnson spent most of the regular season drawing criticism for a lack of production after signing the biggest free agent deal of a wild 2010 summer. Johnson proved his worth in Game 1, scoring 34 points and shooting 5-of-5 from 3-point range. The veteran guard capped the big run in the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer and had no trouble shaking off Chicago defensive stopper Keith Bogans amongst a slew of defenders. Jamal Crawford stepped up as well, pouring in 24 points off the bench for the Hawks.

WHO’S HOT/WHO’S NOT: Luol Deng carried the Bulls offensively through the first half on Monday and finished with 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Josh Smith struggled from the floor for Atlanta, shooting 3-of-11 and just 2-of-4 from the line for eight points.

KEY STATISTIC: Shooting percentage. Chicago led the NBA in defensive shooting percentage in the regular season, holding opponents to 43 percent from the floor. Something went wrong in Game 1, as the Hawks went off at 51.3 percent.

                    TRENDS:

                    * Over is 5-1 in the last six meetings in Chicago.
                    * Over is 9-3 in the last 12 meetings.
                    * Hawks are 8-3 ATS in the last 11 meetings.

LAST WORD: Rose provided the scare of the night for the Bulls when he twisted his left ankle on the final play and had to be helped off by teammates and trainers. Rose sprained the same ankle in Game 4 of the first round against the Indiana Pacers. As a result, Rose was less explosive in Game 5, although he still managed 25 points in the clinching game.

Dallas Mavericks at Los Angeles Lakers (-7, 187.5)

                    Dallas leads series 1-0

THE STORY: The Dallas Mavericks pulled off a stunning comeback victory in the opener and look to take a 2-0 lead over the host Los Angeles Lakers when the Western Conference semifinals resume on Wednesday. Dallas trailed by 16 points early in the third quarter before rallying to pull out a 96-94 victory in Monday’s Game 1. The Mavericks scored nine of the last 11 points over the final 3 1/2 minutes and made the key plays down the stretch while the Lakers wilted under the weight of two costly turnovers. Dallas has notched two straight playoff road victories after winning just two of its previous 20 playoff road contests before closing out the first-round series in Portland. Los Angeles also lost its home opener in the first round against the New Orleans Hornets before rallying to win that series in six games.

                    TV: 10:30 p.m. TNT.

ABOUT THE LAKERS: Los Angeles uncharacteristically crumbled badly when Game 1 was on the line. Kobe Bryant turned the ball over with 20.9 seconds, Pau Gasol had the ball stolen by Jason Kidd with 3.1 seconds left and Bryant missed an open last-second 3-point basket. Bryant didn’t appear bothered by his inflamed ankle while scoring 36 points, but didn’t record a single assist for just the second time all season. Gasol had 15 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists and Lamar Odom had a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Andrew Bynum (eight points) and Ron Artest (two) struggled and the Los Angeles bench was outplayed by the Mavericks.

ABOUT THE MAVERICKS: Dallas is attempting to erase the label of playoff underachievers and certainly took a step in that direction with its Game 1 rally and play down the stretch. Dirk Nowitzki hit two go-ahead free throws with 19.5 seconds left and Kidd made the clutch steal as the Mavericks showed impressive poise on enemy soil. Nowitzki had 28 points and 14 rebounds, Jason Terry scored 15 points and Kidd had 11 assists and three steals. The Mavericks received 40 points from their bench with Terry and Peja Stojakovic (10 points) making the biggest impacts. Dallas hit nine 3-point baskets and committed just 11 turnovers.

WHO'S HOT/WHO’S NOT: Nowitzki’s 28-point game marked his seventh straight 20-point outing this postseason. Artest was just 1-of-8 shooting while scoring two points in the opener.

KEY STATISTIC: Los Angeles made just 5-of-19 attempts from 3-point range in Game 1. Bryant was 4-of-9; the rest of the Lakers were 1-for-10.

                    TRENDS:

                    * Over is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
                    * Mavericks are 7-2 ATS in the last nine meetings in Los Angeles.
                    * Over is 6-2 in the last eight meetings in Los Angeles.
                    * Road team is 11-4-1 ATS in the last 16 meetings.

LAST WORD: “I’m highly concerned. This team can beat us. It’s clear. We just have to come in ready to play Game 2.” – Bryant after Dallas beat the Lakers in Monday’s Game 1.

Pick 'n' roll: Wednesday's best NBA bets
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta Hawks at Chicago Bulls (-8.5, 179)

If there is one lesson the Bulls learned during the second half of the season, it’s how to rebound from a loss. Chicago is 9-1 straight up and against the spread following each of its past 10 defeats.

And judging from coach Tom Thibodeau’s postgame remarks, he knows just the right buttons to push to get his team back on track to even the series after a Game 1 defeat.

"The first thing you have to ask is: Are you executing properly?” Thibodeau said. “Then you also have to ask yourself: Are you playing hard enough? Once you answer those two questions, you decide if you want to change."

Chicago also got good news on Tuesday when it was revealed that star point guard and NBA MVP Derrick Rose had simply a sprained ankle and not something more serious. The All-Star has battled nagging injuries all postseason as teams are playing him tough when he attacks the rim.

But if Rose is on the floor, it should be enough for the Bulls offense. It’s the defensive side the team is worried about, and something that Thibodeau said the team would work on extensively in practice. Hawks star Joe Johnson shouldn’t expect to drop 34 points again in the Windy City.

"We were not challenging shots, we were not keeping the ball in front, we were not finishing our defense," Thibodeau said. "And we played low-energy offense. You cannot do that in the playoffs."

                      Pick: Chicago

Dallas Mavericks at Los Angeles Lakers (-7, 187)

Kobe Bryant said the Lakers gave Game 1 against the Mavericks away. He insisted the biggest reason for the team’s late collapse was failing to pound the ball down low to Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum.

“The second unit and crew has to get a conscious effort to get the ball into Pau and the ball into Andrew,” Bryant said. “I had games where I shot the ball 10 times and Pau and Andrew didn't contribute that much. I had games where I shot the ball 30 times and they had big games. It has nothing to do with my shots."

Bynum finished a mere 3-of-8 from the floor for eight points to go with five rebounds. However, he was a non-factor defensively and finished minus-16 for the game. Gasol got up just 10 shots, hitting five and finishing with 15 points and 11 rebounds. It was just his second double-double of the postseason, and he finished with three turnovers and three fouls – one of which was of the boneheaded variety late in regulation that led to a huge pair of free throws by Dirk Nowitzki.

Statistically, it was Gasol’s best game, finishing with a line of 15-11-7. However, he still couldn’t get the best of Nowitzki, who finished with 28 points and consistently make his presence felt.

"Definitely we gave up a lot of buckets because they spread the floor," said Bynum. "We just got beat on both sides."

Look for Dallas to continue to dictate the matchups and keep the style of play in its favor.

                      Pick: Dallas

                              Wednesday, May 4

Lightning scored two goals in 0:24 early in third period to win and grab a 3-0 series lead; they've outscored Caps 4-1 in third period in series, and held Washington to just one goal on 16 power plays (25:56). Lightning had 15-5 edge in shots in third period last night. Washington has outshot Tampa Bay in first period of all three games (38-23 total). After falling behind 3-1 to penguins in first series, Tampa Bay won last six contests, outscoring opponents 24-11.

Bruins won five of six vs Philly this year, after losing in seven games to Flyers LY after leading in series 3-0; Philly outshot 54-41 in Game 2, as Thomas stopped 52 shots, most in his terrific career. Boston scored ten series goals despite going 0-7 (14:00) on power play; they were outshot 32-12 in 3rd period/OT of Game 2, but traumatic loss in LY's playoffs, after leading Philly 3-0, pretty much ensures Boston won't take Flyers lightly here.

San Jose won five of last six games after being tied 1-1 in Kings' series; Sharks have held Detroit to one goal on 46 shots in 89:42 with teams at even strength in series. San Jose is 4-0 in one-goal games in playoffs, but prideful Red Wings won both home games in last series. Sharks are 9-2 in last eleven games overall against Detroit. Three of six goals so far this series have come on power play, with San Jose having 18:03 with a man advantage, Detroit only 12:15.
