Arroyo tries to cool down Arizona bats Saturday
CINCINNATI REDS (5-2)
at ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS (3-3)
First pitch: Saturday, 8:10 p.m. EDT
Line: Cincinnati -105, Arizona -105, Total: 8.5
The Reds try to snap a two-game losing skid against a suddenly hot Arizona team that has scored 19 runs during two consecutive wins. The Diamondbacks blew open a 3-1 lead with 10 runs in their final three at-bats to beat Cincinnati 13-2 on Friday night.
Bronson Arroyo will be tasked with cooling down the Arizona bats on Saturday. Arroyo pitched seven innings last Sunday against Milwaukee, allowing six hits and three runs on two homers. He also fanned five and didn’t walk a batter. Arroyo pitched pretty well in two starts against Arizona last year, allowing just four runs in 13.1 IP (2.70 ERA) with 13 K and just 2 BB. Reigning National League MVP Joey Votto doubled and homered on Friday and is now hitting .407 with 2 HR and 5 RBI this season.
The Diamondbacks send 24-year-old right-hander Daniel Hudson to the mound on Saturday. Hudson was huge after coming to Arizona last year, going 7-1 with a 1.69 ERA and 0.84 WHIP in 11 starts for the Diamondbacks. Two of those outings were against Cincinnati where he allowed just three runs in 15 innings (1.80 ERA), while striking out 18 and walking only one. Hudson had a quality start on April 2 in Colorado, going six innings and allowing three runs on six hits. Five D’backs batters had multiple-hit games during Friday win, and they hit three home runs off Reds’ reliever Matt Maloney, giving him a pitching line of: 1.2 IP, 6 H, 7 ER.
Before Friday, the Reds had won six previous games at Arizona and are 10-4 versus the Diamondbacks in their past 14 meetings. I expect Cincinnati to recover quickly from Friday’s blowout with a big road win on Saturday. The FoxSheets provide two more reasons to expect the Reds to bounce back from Friday’s defeat.
