Ice picks: Sunday's best NHL bets
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Rangers at Pittsburgh Penguins (NA)

Even if Henrik Lundqvist plays for the Rangers, he will most certainly be at less than 100 percent.

The team’s elite goalie has guided the squad to three straight wins, but suffered a neck injury late in a 6-3 victory over the Canadiens. With only three minutes remaining, Montreal’s Benoit Pouliot collided with the keeper of the crease, snapping his neck backwards.

Trainers attended to Lundqvist on the ice, who was able to finish the game. But afterward he sounded less than optimistic about his status for the game in Pittsburgh on Sunday.

“My head was leaning forward and I took a pretty hard hit there,” he said. “But we checked everything, X-rays were good, it’s just that my neck is very stiff and sore. We’ll see how it is when I wake up (Saturday) but I’m sure it will be sore for several days. My goal is to be ready for Sunday.”

On the other side, the Penguins have found ways to win despite scores of injuries to their most talented forwards. Pittsburgh is on a 4-1 run and is averaging 3.2 goals over that span. The Pens have notched five goals in each of their last two contests.

Lundqvist could aggravate his injury the way pucks may be flying past him Sunday afternoon.

      Pick: Pittsburgh

Nashville Predators at Buffalo Sabres (-140, 5)

It’s taken nearly half the season, but the Predators are finally scoring goals. Nashville is still averaging a mere 2.5 goals – fifth-fewest in the league – but that hasn’t been the case the past two weeks.

Nashville has scored at least four goals in three of its last four games. Not surprisingly, the team went 3-1. For the season, the Preds are a staggering 33-4-1 when topping the three-goal plateau.

The catalyst for the outburst has been the line of David Legwand-Martin Erat-Joel Ward. That unit has combined for five goals and eight assists during the four-game stretch.

“I just think me, Marty and Wardo are keeping things simple,” Legwand said. “That’s just the easiest way to play and go about it. Just keep things simple and work that way and go from there.”

Meanwhile, Buffalo has struggled to keep its net clear the past five games. The Sabres have coughed up 15 goals in their past five games. And even when they manage to lock down the opposition, like they did Tuesday against Carolina, they still come up short. The result: a 1-0 home loss.

      Pick: Nashville

                    Update

Since 1998, Duke has been a #1 seed eight times; they're 8-0 in second round games, 3-5 vs spread, covering last two. Young Michigan team won by 30 Friday despite shooting just 9-26 from arc; Wolverines (+9) won 69-61 at Clemson, in their only game against ACC foe this season. Michigan is underdog for ninth game in a row- they're 8-4 in last 12 games, losing by 9-7 (both Ohio St) 1-2 points.

Ohio State playing in Cleveland makes this road game for George Mason team that is 17-1 in last 18 games, losing CAA semis to VCU by 16 two weeks ago; Patriots lost to NC State by 13 in its only game vs ACC foe. Ohio State won last eight games (6-2 vs spread) with three of last four staying under total; they shot 57% from floor, made 12-24 from arc in easy first round win vs UTSA. VCU is playing third game in five days, having already shut down USC and Georgetown, allowing just 46-56 points (foes were 6-35 from arc in those games). Was looking at VCU as a selection, until I saw that in this round, since 2003, 11-seeds who posted first-round upsets are 1-7 vs spread as an underdog (VCU was only cover, losing to Pitt by 5 in OT four years ago). Purdue smothered St Peter's by 22 Friday, holding an inept Peacock offense to 29% from floor. CAA single digit road dogs are 25-16 vs spread this year. Big 11 single digit favorites are 19-18.

Big East favorites of 5 or less points are 29-27-1 this year.

Illinois was ranked in top 10 in preseason, but underachieved until great win vs UNLV Friday, shooting 59.6% from floor in game they led by 24 at half. Illini is 0-2 vs Big 12 teams this season, losing by 6 at Texas, by 11 to Missouri on a neutral floor. Kansas won by 7 at Michigan in only game vs Big 11 team. Illini is 4-1-1 against the spread in its last six games as an underdog.

Notre Dame is a great offensive team; Florida State is a great defensive team, so interesting game here. Irish had 20-3 edge from foul line in win over Akron Friday. Seminoles held Texas A&M to 31.4% from floor in its 57-50 win, getting star Singleton back in lineup. FSU covered three in a row as an underdog; five of its last six games stayed under. Irish are 8-4 vs spread in last dozen games as a favorite. #2 seeds have covered eight of last ten second round games. Florida State beat Duke this year, a team that is similar to Notre Dame, but that game was also at home.
