Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Buffalo Sabres at Pittsburgh Penguins (-115, 5.5)
A month into the season, the Buffalo Sabres sat dead last in the NHL and a couple of days before Christmas they looked left for dead when sniper Derek Roy suffered a season-ending injury.
But they didn’t lay down and there has been a new confidence surrounding the team since Terry Pegula took over as the club’s new owner. Buffalo has picked up at least a point in seven straight games and Drew Stafford’s overtime goal on Sunday moved the team into the eighth and final playoff spot in the East.
"It feels pretty good but we're not done yet," Stafford told reporters. "We're not stopping there. We're not happy with just being in eighth place. The way this team is playing, the way we can play and the way we know how we can play, we're going to keep going."
Color us convinced.
Pick: Sabres
Ottawa Senators at New Jersey Devils (-260, 5)
If this was a couple of months ago and you saw the Devils priced at -260 against a Pee Wee team, you wouldn’t have thought twice about fading them. Now, not so much.
While New Jersey shouldn’t have much trouble against a Senators club that actually did look a lot like a minor hockey team for much of this season, there’s no reason to jump at this price.
The Devils haven’t played over a total in 13 games, with the under going 10-0-3 over that span. Oddsmakers have reacted by posting 5-goal totals in each of the team’s last four games but don’t let that scare you off here.
The Senators are actually battling a bit following the trade deadline moves and Craig Anderson is a big upgrade in goal – as crazy as that sounds. Anderson is 4-3-0 with a 1.56 goals against average since coming over from the Avalanche.
