    Daily Sports Roundup: March 8

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Big East tournament gets underway in New York, the Hawks play host to the Lakers, and the Bruins take on the division-rival Habs.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

Six games make up the NBA's Tuesday slate, with Golden State at Cleveland, Philadelphia at Indiana, Milwaukee at Washington, Portland at Miami, Houston at Phoenix, and the Lakers at Atlanta. The Lakers beat the Spurs 99-83 in San Antonio in their last game on Sunday afternoon behind 26 points from Kobe Bryant, while the Hawks are coming off a 92-79 home loss to the Knicks on Sunday. Los Angeles and Atlanta last clashed on the hardwood back on February 22 at the Staples Center, with the home team winning 104-80 as an 8-point favorite that night. Bryant picked up a team-high 20 points for the Lakers in the win; Joe Johnson had 14 points for the Hawks.

College hoops action on Tuesday sees Princeton at Pennsylvania, with the Tigers needing a win to force a one-game playoff with Harvard to determine who gets the Ivy League's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. As well, the Horizon, Summit, and Sun Belt conferences will all stage their championship games on Tuesday, while the Atlantic 10 and Big East conference tourneys get underway. The Big East matchups at Madison Square Garden for Tuesday are Rutgers vs. Seton Hall, Providence vs. Marquette, South Florida vs. Villanova, and DePaul vs. Connecticut. The winners of those games play Georgetown, St. John's, Cincinnati, and West Virginia on Wednesday.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The NHL then offers up nine games on Tuesday, with Ottawa at New Jersey, Toronto at the Islanders, Edmonton at Philadelphia, Buffalo at Pittsburgh, Chicago at Florida, Colorado at Minnesota, Vancouver at Phoenix, Nashville at San Jose, and Boston at Montreal. The 38-19-8 Bruins will be looking to bounce back from a 3-2 overtime loss to the Penguins in their last game on Saturday; Zdeno Chara and David Krejci had the Boston goals that day. The 36-23-7 Canadiens doubled up on Tampa Bay 4-2 last time out on Saturday behind 43 saves from Carey Price. The Habs netminder, though was burned for eight goals the last time Montreal and Boston met on the ice back on February 9; the Bruins skated to an 8-6 home victory as a -160 favorite in that matchup.

Tuesday's betting tips: Slumping Heat big faves again

      Lines to watch

NBA: Atlanta opened as a 3.5-point underdog Tuesday against the Lakers, but that line was quickly bet up to +4.5.

      Who’s hot

NBA: Los Angeles Lakers have won seven straight games, covering the number in six of those contests.

NBA: 14 of Cleveland’s last 17 home games have played over the total and the Cavs have topped the total in 35 of their last 52 games overall.

NCAAB: Nine of Marquette’s last 11 games have played under the total.

NHL: New Jersey has lost just once over the last 13 games.

      Who’s not

NBA: Washington has dropped eight of its last 10 matchups against Milwaukee against the spread.

NBA: Miami has lost six straight games ATS and five of those contests outright.

NCAAB: Rutgers has just one win over its last six games, covering twice over that span.

      Key stat

13 – The number of goals the Vancouver Canucks have allowed over the last seven games, all of which have played under the total. That works out to about 1.86 goals per game and backup goaltender Cory Schneider picked up his first career NHL shutout in Sunday’s 3-0 win over Anaheim.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Channing Frye, Phoenix Suns: Phoenix will be without Frye for at least two weeks after he dislocated his shoulder in Sunday’s overtime loss to Oklahoma City. It’s a big loss for the Suns as Frye puts up better than 12 points and six rebounds per night and had 11 points and 15 rebounds against the Thunder before suffering his injury. Phoenix is set as a 5-point home favorite Tuesday against Houston.

      Game of the day

Los Angeles Lakers at Atlanta Hawks (4.5, 185.5)

      Notable quotable

"When you put your heart and your soul, your blood, your sweat, your tears into something and you want something so bad and it just slips from you by one point, two points, three points, 30 points, just to come up short again and again, it hurts." - Heat forward Chris Bosh after the club an 87-86 decision to the Chicago Bulls on Sunday as a 6.5-point favorite. Miami, which has lost its last four outright and is riding an 0-6 run against the spread, now looks to rebound Tuesday when Portland comes to town. The Heat are currently listed as 8.5-point favorites.

      Notes and tips

UConn has a great chance to snap a nasty slump on Tuesday in its opening game of the Big East Tournament against DePaul. The Huskies have lost their last six games at the conference tournament at Madison Square Garden, getting ousted in their first game of the tourney in each of the last five years. They’re up against a last-place DePaul club that is without Cleveland Melvin, who led the team with 14.3 points per game before hitting the shelf for the rest of the season with a sprained thumb. UConn is set as a fat 15-point favorite.

Both the Milwaukee Bucks and Washington Wizards have some significant injury concerns heading into Tuesday’s matchup. Aussie center Andrew Bogut is considered questionable to play with his ribcage injury and Corey Maggette’s status is also reportedly in question as he’s bothered with a nagging knee injury. Bogut has missed the last three games, while Maggette was held to just five points in less than 12 minutes during Sunday’s loss to Boston. Josh Howard and Rashard Lewis are questionable for the Wizards, who have just one straight up win in their last nine games.

The Montreal Canadiens and Boston Bruins get together for the first time since a crazy 8-6 Boston victory over the Habs that featured a couple of brawls and a halfhearted scrap between goaltenders Carey Price and Tim Thomas. The Bruins absolutely manhandled the Canadiens in that one, but the Habs say they’re going to stick with their speed game on Tuesday. “It’s Boston-Montreal,” said Canadiens center Scott Gomez. “We’ll let you guys (reporters) hype this one up but I don’t think anyone is going home tonight and putting on Rocky One, Two or Three. We want to win the game.” Montreal has won eight of the last 10 meetings between the two clubs.

-- Duke's Kyle Singler is 9 for his last 44 (20.5%) behind the arc.

-- Wofford star Noah Dahlman is grandson of John Kundla, who was coach of the Minneapolis Lakers from 1948-59.

-- Gonzaga won its sixth WCC tournament in last nine years, holding off St Mary's 75-63; Zags' bench outscored St Mary's subs 24-6. Going to be a long week for the Gaels', waiting on an at-large bid Sunday.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                NBA

Portland Trail Blazers at Miami Heat (-8.5, 189.5)

Say what you will about tear-jerking loss the Miami Heat suffered on Sunday night, but there’s no way any team in the Association would trade places with the Portland Trail Blazers as they visit the Heat on Tuesday.

There’s no question the Heat are still a work in progress, a team that has most of the tools a championship team needs but still can’t put all the pieces of the puzzle together every night. That’s why cohesive teams are getting the better of them.

That’s not to say they don’t have the talent to torch subpar teams – especially when they’re coming off an embarrassing display like that debacle Sunday’s game turned into down the stretch.

"That was one of the things we got to understand when we all decided to come together,” Dwyane Wade said about giving up fourth-quarter shots to LeBron James. “That there were going to be sacrifices that have to be made. And you live with the consequences."

Remember when LeBron visited Cleveland for the first time? Expect that kind of effort Tuesday as Miami bounces back against a Portland club playing its second game in as many nights.

                Pick: Heat

                NCAAB

Providence Friars at Marquette Golden Eagles (-7, 154)

The Marquette Golden Eagles’ game plan for Tuesday’s matchup with Providence is no big secret: shut down Marshon Brooks, who ranks second in the nation scoring 24.8 points per game.

The thing that sets Marquette apart is that the club actually has had some success in holding the 6-foot-5 sniper in check – thanks in large part to 6-foot-7 senior forward Jimmy Butler.

Butler drew the assignment of guarding Brooks the last time the two teams hooked up and held him to 17 points on 7-for-16 shooting in a 86-62 blowout victory.

"Maybe more than other volume shooters, volume scorers, he doesn't score because of his quicks,” Marquette coach Buzz Williams said of Brooks. “He doesn't score because he's fast. He scores because he's rhythmic and because he's so long. I think the thing that helped us last game is Jimmy can match his length.”

Butler will have his hands full again on Tuesday and we think Brooks helps to push this over the number.

                Pick: Over

South Florida Bulls vs Villanova Wildcats [ESPNU | 7:00 PM ET]

BULLS: South Florida might just be the best team in the nation that has lost 8 of their last 9 SU. Such is life in the Big East Conference, the toughest conference in the nation top to bottom. The Bulls are just 9-22 SU this season, yet are 15-13-1 ATS. South Florida has been a profitable team to wager on this year because they are underrated and have a never say die mentality. South Florida is 1-1 SU and 2-0 ATS in true road games this year against BYU and Texas Tech. Despite going 3-15 SU in conference play, the Bulls were 10-8 ATS. South Florida averages just 61.7 PPG, which places them in the bottom 40 in the country. C Augustus Gilchrist is the only South Florida player averaging double digits in PPG this year, as he's averaging 13.2 PPG. F Ron Anderson is averaging 7.1 PPG and a team high 6.5 RPG this year. The Bulls are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following an ATS loss. Chicago is 12-4-1 ATS in their last 17 neutral site games as an underdog. The Bulls are 18-7-1 ATS in their last 26 neutral site games.

Bulls are 8-3 ATS last 11 games following a SU loss.

Projected Score: 60 (SIDE of the Day)

WILDCATS: (-10, O/U 127) Villanova has dominated South Florida through the years, and they are hoping that trend continues tonight. The Wildcats have lost their last 4 games SU to end the season. The Wildcats are 21-10 SU and 11-16-1 ATS overall this year. Villanova played UCLA and Tennessee in neutral court situations, as they went 1-1 both SU and ATS. The biggest reason the Wildcats have been losing of late is because their typically prolific offense has gone awry. 4 different Wildcats average double figures in PPG this year, led by G Corey Fisher. Fisher is averaging a team high 15.5 PPG this year. F Antonio Pena is averaging 10 PPG and a team high 7.3 RPG this season. 4 different players started every game for Villanova this year. The Wildcats are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games against a team with a winning percentage below .400%. Villanova is 5-17 ATS in their last 22 games following an ATS loss. The Wildcats are 0-6 ATS in their last 6 games as the listed favorite overall.

Wildcats are 1-11 ATS last 12 games overall.
Under is 10-4 last 14 games following a SU loss.

Key Injuries - G Corey Stokes (hamstring) is questionable.
