NHL on NBC betting preview: Flyers at Rangers
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Philadelphia Flyers at New York Rangers

The Flyers aim to stretch their lead in the Atlantic Division while the Rangers are trying to keep themselves in the Eastern Conference playoff picture.

These teams met two Sundays ago, with Philadelphia taking a 4-2 win over New York at Madison Square Garden, despite the Rangers outshooting the Flyers 39-24, including a 15-3 third-period barrage.

Philadelphia has won five in a row over New York and is 7-3 in their last 10 meetings – posting a 3-7 over/under mark in that span.

        Turbulence

The Flyers were soaring for most of the season but stumbled in February, splitting wins and losses in their last 10 outings heading into Saturday’s date with the Buffalo Sabres. They dropped back-to-back games this week, losing to the Ottawa Senators and Toronto Maple Leafs, while getting outscored 7-3 in those two outings combined.

Over the last six games, the Broad Street Bullies have netted two or fewer in four contests. And, since the All-Star break, Philly has failed to score three or more goals in regulation in 13 games - this coming from a team that ranks second in the NHL in scoring at 3.2 goals per night.

The big problem has been the team’s power play, which is a dismal 1 for 23 in the past seven games heading into Saturday. Philadelphia was 0 for 3 with the man advantage versus the Maple Leafs Thursday.

"A little bit of adversity might not be a bad thing," forward Danny Briere told reporters. "You don't want to start hitting adversity for the first time in the first round of the playoffs. We have a group of guys that usually respond well to adversity."

        Snap, crackle, pop

The Rangers snapped a three-game losing skid with a 4-1 victory over the Senators Friday night.

New York needed the win to avoid dropping further back in the Eastern Conference standings. It has gone just 5-11 in its last 16 games, including a six-game losing skid that opened February.

Heading into Saturday’s schedule, New York sits seventh in the East with 67 points – just one point ahead of the Carolina Hurricanes and only four points in front of the ninth-place Buffalo Sabres.

"You lose three at home, it's a kick in the teeth," Rangers head coach John Tortorella told the media. "But you wake up this morning, we're still in the playoffs, we're still right in the middle of it. It's just trying to gather ourselves, and stay with one another, and stay within our structure, and I thought for the most part we did a good job."

        Flyers flu

A flu bug is setting up camp in the Flyers dressing room, notably infecting forwards Jeff Carter, Daniel Carcillo and Darroll Powe, who missed Thursday’s tilt with Toronto.

"I think it's part of the season and the wear and tear of what goes on," head coach Peter Laviolette told reporters. "Not a lot you can do about it. It is what it is."

All three are expected to play Saturday, but the illness could have Philadelphia’s tank running on empty on the back end of back-to-back games. The Flyers are 6-1 in their last seven games that were the second of back-to-back outings.

        Trends

        - Flyers are 5-0 in the last five meetings.
        - Under is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
        - Home team is 6-2 in the last eight meetings.

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ice picks: Sunday's best NHL bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Washington Capitals at Florida Panthers (149, 5.5)

With goalie Semyon Varlamov suffering a knee injury that will keep him out for up to 10 days, the Capitals will be forced to turn to Michal Neuvirth full-time. But that might not be so bad.

Neuvirth has given up a mere five goals over his past three starts, winning them all. Over that span, he has a sparkling .943 save percentage and an equally stellar 1.67 goals-against average. Before the injury to Varlamov the duo has split time, but now with the recent play of Neuvirth, it appears the youngster has the opportunity to seize the No. 1 spot.

"It's been a big opportunity for me playing every game, and that's what I like," Neuvirth said. "We've got a tough schedule ahead of us but I think I can handle it."

And it’s not like the Panthers have been scoring a lot of goals.

Florida has just six goals over its past six games and is a mere 1-5 over that span. Not surprisingly, the team has converted only one of its past 20 chances on the man advantage. Overall, the Panthers are averaging a mere 2.4 goals per game, the 28th lowest total in the league.

"We’re professionals here, and it doesn’t matter what place you are in," Florida defenseman Mike Weaver said. "We have some new faces and bodies. We just have to work hard, outwork the other team."

          Pick: Washington

Nashville Predators at Calgary Flames (-135, 5)

Three weeks. That’s how long it’s been since the Predators cracked the three-goal mark. Over that span, the team is just 3-6 and has notched a pathetic 15 goals. One of the players taking the most heat over this drought is Swedish forward Patric Hornqvist.

The dynamic skater has 18 goals this year but has lit the lamp only three times over his past 19 games. Nashville is hoping a recent score against Vancouver will shake him out of his funk.

"Some guys in here have to step up and I am one of those guys who has to score some goals," Hornqvist said. "Of course you want to score, no question about it. As long as you get chances, the goals are going to come."

But the goals have come in spades lately for Calgary. The Flames are continuing to be white hot with their wide-open style, notching 14 goals in their past three games. During that stretch, Jerome Iginla (4 goals, 3 assists) and Renee Bourque (3 goals, 2 assists) have been nearly unstoppable in the offensive zone.

"This year," Iginla said, "especially in the last 30 games or two months or so — we've felt like whatever the score is we can come back."

          Pick: Calgary
