    Daily Sports Roundup: March 6

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The drivers of the Sprint Cup Series take on Las Vegas, while top-ranked Ohio State hosts Wisconsin, and the Lakers battle the Spurs.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA's Sunday schedule offers up nine games, with Chicago at Miami, Washington at Detroit, Golden State at Philadelphia, New York at Atlanta, New Orleans at Cleveland, Phoenix at Oklahoma City, Memphis at Dallas, Boston at Milwaukee, and the Lakers at San Antonio. The Spurs have beaten the Lakers twice already this season, winning 97-82 at home as a 3.5-point favorite in December, and 89-88 on the road as a 3-point underdog in February. Tony Parker, who is out with a calf injury, led the way for San Antonio with 21 points in that February victory, while Tim Duncan was held to just eight points in that game. Kobe Bryant picked up 16 points and 10 assists for the Lakers.

No. 20 Kentucky plays at Tennessee in college hoops action on Sunday, while the top matchup involving ranked teams has No. 10 Wisconsin at No. 1 Ohio State. The top-ranked Buckeyes (28-2 SU, 14-13 ATS) will be looking to conclude their regular-season schedule with their fourth straight victory; Ohio State knocked off Penn State 82-61 on the road in their most recent contest. Wisconsin, though, beat Ohio State 71-67 at home when the teams met on February 12. Jordan Taylor led the way for the Badgers with a game-high 27 points in that victory, while Jon Leuer picked up 12 points and six rebounds. Jared Sullinger had 19 points and 12 rebounds in that defeat for Ohio State.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

As well, the NHL finishes off its weekly slate with six games on Sunday: Philadelphia at the Rangers, New Jersey at the Islanders, Washington at Florida, Buffalo at Minnesota, Nashville at Calgary, and Vancouver at Anaheim. The Canucks and Ducks last met on February 9 in Vancouver, with Anaheim grabbing a 4-3 road win in that OVER result. Bobby Ryan had a pair of markers for the Ducks in that victory, while Jason Blake and Brandon McMillan provided one goal apiece. Daniel Sedin, Alexandre Burrows, and Ryan Kesler scored for Vancouver in the defeat, while Cory Schneider made 20 saves.

    Roaring around the track . . .

Finally, the Sprint Cup Series hits the track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Sunday afternoon for the Kobalt Tools 400. Jimmie Johnson has taken the checkered flag four times in Cup events at Las Vegas since 2005, and the oddsmakers have him at 9/2 to visit Victory Lane once again this weekend. Kyle Busch, who won at Las Vegas in 2009 and currently leads the Sprint Cup Series standings, is at 6/1 odds for the weekend, while 2008 Las Vegas winner Carl Edwards sits at 15/2 odds to pick up the trophy on Sunday. Two-time Las Vegas champ Matt Kenseth is farther back at 25/1 on that chart.

Sunday's betting tips: Green emerging for Celtics

      Who’s hot

NHL: The under is 5-0 in Vancouver’s last five overall and 4-1 in Anaheim’s last five overall.

NCAAB: Boston College is 6-1 ATS in its last seven overall.

NBA: The Grizzlies are 4-1 ATS in their last five overall and 6-1 ATS in their last seven road games.

NBA: The Cavaliers are 5-1 ATS in their last six overall and 4-1 ATS in their last five home games.

      Who’s not

NHL: The Islanders are 1-4 in their last five overall.

NCAAB: Georgia Tech is 1-6-1 ATS in its last eight overall and 0-5 ATS in its last five home games.

NBA: The Bucks are 1-5 ATS in their last six overall and 0-5 ATS in their last five home games.

NBA: The Hawks are 1-4 ATS in their last four home games.

      Key stat

49 – Official number of penalty minutes racked up by New York Islanders left wing Trevor Gillies in his last two games, which came almost a month apart due to a nine-game suspension stemming from his first offense against Pittsburgh on February 11. Gillies delivered a blindside hit in his first game back against Minnesota on March 2 and the NHL dialed up a 10-game suspension for him later in the week.

The Islanders host New Jersey on Sunday and they are also expected to miss defensemen Mark Streit (shoulder), Radek Martinek (lower body), and Milan Jurcina (groin).

As for the latest victim of a Gillies’ cheap-shot, Wild right wing Cal Clutterbuck (upper body) is questionable for Sunday’s home game against Buffalo. Cam Barker (upper body), Cody Almond (lower body), and Chuck Kobasew (flu) are also questionable for Minnesota.

      Injuries that shouldn’t be overlooked

Atlanta Hawks forward Josh Smith suffered a strained right MCL on Monday and missed Wednesday’s win over Chicago and Friday’s loss to Oklahoma City. He practiced on Saturday, though, and is expected to return to the lineup when Atlanta hosts New York on Sunday.

“It’s cool,” Smith told the Atlanta Journal Constitution after his workout. “Obviously I am thinking about it and being more cautious. I’ve got to play with a clear mind. If I think about re-injuring it I probably will. I’ve just got to get [accustomed] to that brace. For the most part it felt all right. I think at this point it is going to be what it is. I’m just going to get treatment as much as possible and try to go tomorrow.”

The Knicks have even more problems on the injury front. Ronny Turiaf (knee) and Bill Walker (knee) are both questionable while Chauncey Billups (thigh) is doubtful.

      Biggest game on the slate

Wisconsin Badgers at Ohio State Buckeyes (-7, 128.5)

      Notable quotable

“I’ll say it again: I know for a fact there’s nobody in the country asking their freshmen to do more than we are. It’s not even close. Other teams have freshmen that are playing well but if they don’t, they're OK. We’re not in that position. These kids have to perform.” – Kentucky head coach John Calipari, whose freshmen-led team is set for a road contest at Tennessee on Sunday afternoon

      Tips and notes

After 55 seasons, Georgia Tech will be playing its final game in Alexander Memorial Coliseum when it hosts Miami on Sunday afternoon. "We hope there is one final game against Miami where everybody comes out and supports the student athletes and pays homage to the building," said athletic director Dan Radakovich. The fans--or lack thereof--have not had much to cheer about with the Jackets wallowing at 11th in the Athletic Coast Conference. However, freshman Jason Morris has been inserted into the starting lineup over the past three games and that move has paid off--including with a blowout win at Wake Forest on Thursday. Morris went for 13 points, three assists, and four steals against the Deacons. He has made six threes in those three games after having drained a total of 13 during his first 26 outings.

The Celtics and Bucks may have trouble fielding teams for Sunday's clash in Milwaukee. Well, not really; but the injury reports are borderline ridiculous. The Bucks will likely be missing Andrew Bogut (ribs), while Ersan Ilyasova (concussion) and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute (flu) are questionable. Boston will be without birthday boy Shaquille O'Neal, 39, who is expected to miss his 13th straight game with an Achilles' problem. Glen Davis (patellar tendinitis) is out, while Delonte West (ankle) and Von Wafer (calf) are doubtful. The good news for the Celtics is that newly-acquired Jeff Green appears to be settling in nicely. After scoring a total of 18 points in his first three games with the team, Green contributed 21 on 8-of-11 shooting in Friday's win over Golden State.

        Sunday's six-pack

-- Nets beat Toronto 137-136 in triple OT over in London in what may have been the most exciting NBA game this season.

-- Kevin Love had 20 points, 21 rebounds; he is making 20-20 games almost commonplace. Too bad his Timberwolves are still only 15-49.

-- Utah ended its 7-game home losing skid, beating the Kings in OT. In one short month, the Jazz lost its coach, its point guard and its future.

-- Michael Jordan's Charlotte Bobcats lost 93-69 in Portland, making them 0-4 on current road trip, losing by 14-40-8-24 points. Being one of the best players ever doesn't qualify you to run a franchise.

-- Penguins won 3-2 in OT in Boston Saturday, ending Bruins' winning streak at seven games.

-- Rory Sabbatini has a 5-shot lead entering the final round of the Honda Classic; not often a guy has that big a lead after 54 holes.

        *************************

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college basketball Saturday

        13) Notre Dame coach Mike Brey let star Ben Hansbrough play with four fouls, when he had an 8-point lead with 8:00 left at UConn; the kid fouls out, so this is an amazing blunder by Brey, especially when UConn goes on and scores the next 15 points to take a 7-point lead, but his players bailed him out, rallying to win by 3 over fading Huskies, who now have to play in first round of the Big East tournament Tuesday.

        12) Big East propaganda machine works hard to relentlessly say how this is such a great league and all, but Georgetown/Villanova/UConn are fading, West Virginia can't make a shot to save its life, and DePaul/South Florida are putrid. Still don't think Marquette is a lock for the NCAAs, either.

        11) Congrats to Fordham on snapping 41-game conference losing streak with an upset of UMass; not sure how a school in NYC can be so bad in basketball all the time, but Fordham pulls it off. Go recruiting, coach.

        10) Louisville led by 5 with 0:20 left at West Virginia but not only lost, they lost in regulation. Surprising meltdown by the Cardinals, who fouled a West Virginia player 80 feet from hoop in tie game with 0:00.6 left.

        9) First two rounds of WCC tournament were televised by BYU-TV, as Cougars will be playing in WCC starting next year, but play-by-play guy kept talking about BYU both nights, even though they're not even in this tournament. Very strange, BYU going into a league with smaller schools that all have small gyms, when BYU's seats around 22,000.

        8) Oregon State benched several players for curfew violations and played only six kids at Arizona State, with sixth kid playing only six minutes of a 80-66 loss to the last-place Sun Devils. The President's brother-in-law has not done real well coaching out in Corvallis, at a time when Pac-10 is not at its strongest. Wonder how much time he gets to start winning.

        7) Michigan is surging into NCAA tournament contention, beating rival Michigan State for second time this season, 70-63. John Beilein is a real good coach, but he's had trouble gaining traction in Ann Arbor. Until now.

        6) UCLA played horribly for most of their 58-54 OT win at Washington State; they're damn lucky Wazzu was missing two starters, one for legal difficulties, the other with a sprained ankle. Bruins were down 13 at half.

        5) Harvard beat Princeton by 12, so now Tigers have to win next game vs Penn to force a playoff game for Ivy League title. Ivy is only league that doesn't have a conference tournament, so regular season is everything.

        4) North Carolina played Duke twice this year, and led by 14-12 points at halftime; this kid Marshall playing PG for UNC is very good. Duke is a team that relies heavily on 3-pointers (6-27 last night), so they're going to struggle on the road, because shooting comes and goes.

        3) Speaking of which, Seton Hall entered the week shooting 28% from the arc, but in wins over St John's/Marquette this week, they made 24-39. If anyone has any reason why stuff like this happens, let me know. Maybe its just kids playing better at home, maybe its just random, but it'll be real interesting to see how they shoot in the Big East tournament this week.

        2) Feel bad for Wichita State, which has 24 wins but lost to Indiana State in the MVC semi-finals, which basically ruins their season. People out in Utah have made noise about inquiring if Greg Marshall would like to be the Utes' next coach as they enter the Pac-12. We'll see about that.

        1) Final Four of the Colonial tournament is going to be lot of fun, with the top four teams still playing. George Mason-VCU and ODU-Hofstra is an excellent Sunday doubleheader down in Richmond.

Double dribble: NBA on ABC betting preview
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Bulls at Miami Heat (-5, 188)

The carousel of clashes between top teams in the Eastern Conference continues to go round and round, as the Bulls and Heat square off for the third time this season Sunday. Miami is at home and has a chance to avenge a pair of recent losses in Chicago. The Bulls prevailed 99-96 on January 15 to push the 3-point spread and they pulled out a 93-89 win as 3-point underdogs on February 24.

LeBron James missed the first contest (which explains why the Heat were dogs in January before being favored a month later), in which Derrick Rose poured in 33 points to subdue the visitors. James had 29 points and 10 rebounds in the second showdown, but Rose went for 26 and Luol Deng added 20 points and 10 boards.

Miami had serious rebounding issues in both games against Chicago. The Bulls won the board battle 42 to 30 in the first meeting and dominated it 53 to 39 (including 13 to 6 on the offensive end) in the second one.

Cooling of the Heat, running of the Bulls

The Heat have been up and down this season and that’s kind of putting it nicely. They started out bad, recovered with a mid-season streak and are approaching downright terrible of late. Miami has been consistent in one department: Failing to beat good teams.

Erik Spoelstra’s club has not defeated a team above .500 (and nobody better than 27-34 Indiana) since it got the best of Orlando more than a month ago on February 3. The Heat have lost five in a row to winning opponents, including a current three-game slide that features a blown 24-point against the Magic Thursday and a 125-95 humbling at San Antonio Friday.

“We’re still a confident bunch,” James told the Palm Beach Post after losing to the Spurs. “We know it’s a tough stretch for us right now. We lost three games in a row, but I feel like all it takes is one win.”

Looking at the schedule, it’s hard to figure where that win will come. Miami still has eight consecutive games against winning teams (they don’t play a sub-.500 team until Detroit on March 23) and it starts with the streaking Bulls.

Chicago has won three of four (3-1 ATS), eight of 10 (8-2 ATS) and 14 of 18 (13-5 ATS). The team is coming off an impressive 89-81 win at Orlando Friday, as it pounded the Magic 50 to 30 on the glass while Rose went for a game-high 24 points.

                Trending topics

The Bulls are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 overall and 8-2 ATS in their last 10 against the Eastern Conference.

The Heat are 0-5 ATS in their last five overall and 1-4 ATS in their last five home games.

The under is 5-0 in Chicago’s last five overall and 0-4 in its last four road games.

Head-to-head, the home team is 5-1-1 ATS in the last seven meetings and Miami is 4-1 ATS in its last four at home against the Bulls.

Los Angeles Lakers at San Antonio Spurs (-2.5, 191.5)

Like Miami, Los Angeles will also be looking to avenge a pair of losses when it goes up against San Antonio for the third time this season.

With home-court advantage on December 28, the Spurs made mincemeat out of the 3.5-point spread and dominated the Lakers 97-82. They took to the road as 3-point underdogs on February 3 and edged L.A. thanks to an Antonio McDyess tip-in at the buzzer.

Tim Duncan (eight points, eight rebounds) was almost non-existent in the thriller, but Tony Parker contributed 21 points and L.A. shot a wretched 2 of 14 from beyond the arc. Duncan (two points, two rebounds in 30 minutes) was even more invisible in the first contest, but Parker led four Spurs in double figures with 23 points while DeJuan Blair had 17 points and 15 boards. Kobe Bryant shot just 8 of 27 from the floor.

                Home cooking

The Spurs are 29-2 at home this season (just 16-14-1 ATS because they are always such heavy favorites) and have not lost at the AT&T Center since way back on November 26 to Dallas. San Antonio punctuated its 22-game home surge with Friday’s humiliation of the Heat.

In addition to enjoying the friendly confines of their home court on Sunday, the Spurs also have Parker back from a calf injury that sidelined him for two games. He was expected to miss at least a week, but he returned Friday and delivered 15 points and eight assists in the dousing of the Heat.

“He did a great job,” head coach Gregg Popovich told the San Antonio Express-News. “It’s great to have him back. He ran the show well and got us started out by moving the ball and being active. He was great.”

“That’s what he’s been doing all season for us,” Duncan added. “Running that point guard position, making the right passes and right plays, and finishing when he has to. We did a great job as a team moving the ball; getting it to wide-open shooters.”

                Trending topics

The Lakers are 5-0 ATS in their last five overall and 6-0 ATS in their last six against the Western Conference.

The over is 6-1 in the Spurs’ last seven overall.

Head-to-head, the under is 12-3 in the last 15 meetings in San Antonio. The under is 20-6 in the last 26 overall encounters between the two teams.

                  NBA

New York Knicks at Atlanta Hawks

New York head coach Mike D’Antoni says his team’s offense remains a work in progress. Judging by a pair of losses to the Cleveland Cavaliers over the past few weeks, that’s an understatement.

D’Antoni told reporters this week the addition of Carmelo Anthony means the team is going to run many, many more isolation plays than earlier this year. Also, with guard Chauncey Billups a few steps slower than even the recently-departed Raymond Felton, the offense will be forced to be more deliberate in its approach.

"We’re always going to be a little bit of an iso, one-on-one kind of a team, which, to be honest with you, is pretty good," D’Antoni said. "I think we’ll meet some place halfway in between, because we don’t want to lose what Melo and those guys do the best. A lot of it is going one-on-one. They’re the best in the league at it."

But how effective will that style be against the Hawks?

Not very. Anthony is just 29-for-73 from the floor in his past four games against the Hawks (2-2) and has scored much more effectively against Atlanta over that span by getting to the foul line. Expect the team’s offense to eventually gel with Billups and Anthony. Just don’t expect it to be in Atlanta.

                  Pick: Hawks

                  NCAA

Florida State Seminoles at North Carolina State Wolfpack (0, 137.5)

Seminoles star Chris Singleton went down with a broken foot two weeks ago and all seemed lost for his team. But now, the only thing standing between Florida State and sole possession of third place in the Atlantic Coast Conference is a trip to Raleigh.

And the Seminoles have had no problem playing away from Tallahassee this season. The squad is great at taking its defense on the road, going 7-5 SU and 6-6 ATS in opponents' gyms this year. On the season, opponents are shooting a mere 36.5 percent from the field this season against the ‘Noles, the lowest average in the country.

Over the team’s past 97 games, 94 opponents have failed to break the 50 percent shooting mark.

Florida State is actually poised to improve on those numbers--if that’s possible. Ian Miller, Xavier Gibson and Terrance Shannon all recently returned from injury, bolstering the squad’s bench and making it one of the deepest teams in the league.

"When you take into consideration that Xavier is just trying to get back," head coach Leonard Hamilton said. "Terrance is coming off of surgery. Ian is trying to get back, acclimated. It's really still difficult to assess where they really, really are."

Florida State might not be the top team in the ACC, but it can do enough to dispose of a weak Wolfpack for the second time this season.

                  Pick: Florida State

Wisconsin Badgers at Ohio State Buckeyes (-7.5, 128.5)

                            THE STORY
: Top-ranked Ohio State looks to win the Big Ten regular season crown outright when it hosts No. 10 Wisconsin Sunday afternoon. The Buckeyes will also be out to avenge their first defeat of the season, a 71-67 defeat in Madison, Wisconsin on Feb. 12.

Ohio State has won its last three games by at least 19 points each, including identical 82-61 routs of Indiana and Penn State. The Badgers extended their current winning streak to four with a 77-67 victory at Indiana Thursday. Junior guard Jordan Taylor scored a career-best 39 points.

                            TV: CBS, 4 p.m. ET.

ABOUT WISCONSIN (23-6, 13-4 Big Ten, 15-10-0 ATS): The Badgers have won eight of nine, with the lone blemish a 70-62 setback at Purdue on Feb. 16 — a game that came just four days after Wisconsin's win over Ohio State.

Wisconsin leads the nation in free-throw percentage (83.0), assist-turnover ratio (1.8) and fewest turnovers per game (7.51), and is also second in scoring defense (57.9). Senior forward Jon Leuer averages 19 points and 7.4 rebounds to lead the team, while Taylor posts 18.6 points and 4.9 assists an outing. The Badgers are 5-5 in true road games with a 5-5 mark against the spread.

ABOUT OHIO STATE (27-2, 14-2, 14-13-0 ATS): The Buckeyes will be looking for a school-record 20th home victory in as many outings. Freshman forward Jared Sullinger heads an extremely balanced attack with 17.1 points and 9.8 rebounds per game, while three Buckeyes guards are also scoring in double figures — junior William Buford (14.3), senior David Lighty (12.3) and senior Jon Diebler (11.8).

Ohio State ranks third nationally in field-goal percentage (49.5), turnover margin (5.5) and assist-turnover ratio (1.53) and is fourth in scoring margin (17.8). The Buckeyes also lead the Big Ten in scoring (77.4), 3-point shooting percentage (40.5) and steals (7.7).

WHO'S HOT/WHO’S NOT: In addition to coming off a career-best scoring night, Taylor leads the country in assist-turnover ratio (4.15) and is poised to break the NCAA mark of 3.96, set by Utah State's Tyler Newbold in 2008-09... Diebler scored a career-high 30 points at Penn State, hitting 10 of 12 3-point shots... Sullinger has five double-doubles in Ohio State's last eight games.

KEY STATISTIC: Wisconsin is on track to set a pair of NCAA team records — free-throw percentage (Harvard shot 82.2 percent in 1983-84) and turnovers per game (Temple averaged 7.72 in 2005-06).

RECENT HISTORY: The home team has won each of the last five meetings over the past three seasons. Ohio State won last year in Columbus, 60-51, covering as a 5.5-point favorite.

LOOKING AHEAD: Both teams have clinched first-round byes in the Big Ten Tournament and spots in Friday's quarterfinal round.

LAST WORD: A victory over the Badgers could potentially clinch Ohio State a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament regardless of what happens in the conference tourney. Wisconsin, meanwhile, could still conceivably climb as high as a No. 2 seed in the next week if it were to sweep the Buckeyes.
