New Orleans Hornets at Oklahoma City Thunder (-3.5, 200)

The New Orleans Hornets (12-4, 9-6-1 ATS) squandered an opportunity to put a dent in one of their division rivals on Sunday. Now it’s time to get back up off the mat.

The Hornets will be looking to prove they can hang with another elite Western Conference team when they visit the Oklahoma City Thunder (11-6, 8-9 ATS) on Monday.

                    Feeling the sting

It was all roses for New Orleans when they started off the season 8-0 and surged to 11-1 by the middle of November. But the last week has not been quite as kind to the Hornets, who have found out lately that no team in the Western Conference is a pushover, and the great teams come to play every night.

New Orleans was nice enough to give the Los Angeles Clippers their second win of the season last Monday, squandering a halftime lead and getting outplayed down the stretch. That loss could be chalked up to the fact that the Hornets were playing the second night of a back-to-back, but two days later they got hammered, 107-85, at Utah as Deron Williams got the better of Chris Paul in a matchup of premier point guards.

They bounced back with a win at Portland on Friday and it looked as though all of their problems were solved on Sunday – until the second half rolled around. New Orleans, hosting division foe San Antonio, was in the process of making a statement against the Spurs, holding a 17-point lead early in the third quarter.

But San Antonio brought the Hornets back down to size by outscoring them 65-34 in the second half en route to a 109-95 victory. The Spurs forced nine turnovers in the second half and held New Orleans to 35.5 percent shooting. When San Antonio made its adjustments, the Hornets could not match with their own.

                    Thunder rolls

The Thunder, with one of the youngest rosters in the league, aren’t anything like the veteran-laden Spurs, but they present some very difficult matchups for any team, including New Orleans. Kevin Durant will force Trevor Ariza to guard the outside and will have a size advantage on the inside, while Jeff Green can move David West away from the interior on defense as well.

The marquee matchup, however, will be between Paul and Russell Westbrook, who is rapidly moving up the ladder into Paul’s company on the list of explosive young point guards.

Westbrook finished with 23 points and 10 assists against the Houston Rockets on Sunday but it was not quite enough, as the Thunder fell, 99-98. Durant had one of his worst games of the season with 18 points, two rebounds and three assists and missed a shot in the final second that would have given Oklahoma City the win.

Oklahoma had won six of seven before Sunday’s setback, taking down playoff contenders like Utah and Boston on the road in the pro.

                    Trends

                    - Favorite is 15-6 ATS in the last 21 meetings.
                    - Thunder are 13-3 ATS in their last 16 Monday games.
                    - Hornets are 1-6-1 ATS in their last eight games overall.

Game of the day: Virginia at Minnesota
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Virginia Cavaliers at Minnesota Golden Gophers (-15)

The team on the biggest roll in college basketball could very well reside in Minneapolis.

The Minnesota Gophers, thought to be a bubble team for the NCAA Tournament, have won their first six games. Minnesota shoots for its seventh Monday night at home against Virginia in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

                      Gopher gold

Home wins over Wofford and Siena were no surprise, but the Gophers caught the attention of everyone in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off. After beating Western Kentucky in the first round, Minnesota pulled off two major surprises with wins over North Carolina in the second round and West Virginia in the title game.

The championship moved the Gophers to the 17th spot in this week's USA Today/ESPN coaches poll and improved Minnesota to 5-1 ATS. The early success led to a possible letdown against North Dakota State last Wednesday, but it didn't happen as the Gophers rolled to an 84-65 win.

Blake Hoffarber scored 24 points and hit four 3-pointers. Trevor Mbakwe, the tournament Most Valuable Player in Puerto Rico, scored 12 points and had seven rebounds while Ralph Sampson III added nine points and blocked three shots.

Minnesota ended the first half on a 20-3 run to take a 42-26 lead.

The Gophers are unbeaten despite the absence of guard Devoe Joseph, who was suspended indefinitely by coach Tubby Smith the day before the opener. Minnesota is also playing without point guard Al Nolen and forward Rodney Williams, who are both scratches with foot injuries.

                      Have and Cav nots

Virginia (3-3) lost two of three at last week's Maui Invitational. The Cavaliers were embarrassed in the opener, losing to Washington 106-63. Virginia bounced back to defeat Oklahoma 74-56, but fell to Wichita State 70-58 in the final game.

The Cavaliers began the season with wins over William & Mary and South Carolina Upstate. Virginia stopped off in California on its way to Hawaii to play Stanford, but was no match in an 81-60 loss. It takes a 2-3 ATS mark into Monday.

The Cavaliers are coming off a tough season and the outlook for 2010-11 isn't that much better. Virginia, 16-16 overall and 5-11 in the Atlantic Coast Conference last season, will be counting on several inexperienced players.

Senior forward Mike Scott leads Virginia in scoring with a 16.5 average, but four of the top six scorers are either freshmen or sophomores.

The Cavaliers' inexperience showed in Maui. Virginia jumped to a 14-point lead in the first half against Wichita State, but everything quickly fell apart. The Cavaliers were outscored 66-38 from the midpoint of the first half through the end of the game. Virginia made only 9-of-28 shots in the second half.

Scott scored 54 points and had 29 rebounds in the three games in Maui.

                      Trends

                      - Minnesota is 2-1 SU and ATS in the past three meetings with Virginia, the most recent coming in 2008. The Golden Gophers took a 66-56 victory as 8-point home favorites. In those three head-to-head games, the teams combined for a 1-2 over/under record.

                      - Golden Gophers are 8-1 ATS in their last nine home games.

                      - Over is 7-2 in Virginia’s last nine non-conference games.
