                Tuesday, November 16

                College Basketball Knowledge
TCU beat local rival SMU 60-53/62-44 last two years; five of last six in series were decided by 7 or less points. Frogs brought in six new players after losing three starters from 13-19/5-11 team. Mustangs lost 57-47 at home (-7) to Ark-Little Rock in their opener Friday.

Louisville opens its new arena here; Pitino has said Cards will run more this year- he only has one senior on squad, and four new starters. Butler lost two starters from LY's 33-5/18-0 team that came close to winning a national title- they've won 30+ games two of the last three seasons.

Wake Forest lost opener to Stetson, then beat Hampton 63-56, as they struggle to learn new coach Bzdelik's system with only one starter back from LY's 20-11/9-7 team. They're rebuilding. VCU won its first couple games by 15-13 points; Rams made 11-24 from arc last night, assisted on 19 of 26 hoops, so they share the ball well.

North Texas has four starters back from 24-9/13-5 team, fourth year in a row they've won 20+ games. UNT starts four seniors. Texas Tech ended LY on 3-9 skid; with AD Myers retiring after year, young Knight is on hot seat with another bad year. Tech has three seniors back from squad that went only 4-12 in Big 12 LY.

South Carolina has only three players back who played significant time LY, with two returning starters from 15-16/6-10 team, but 5-9 freshman point guard Ellington is supposed to be very good. Michigan State has four starters back from 28-9/14-4 team that made the Final Four in last two seasons- they won their opener over Eastern Michigan by 30.

Iowa lost its opener to South Dakota State, bad sign; they miss injured G Gatens, one of three returning starters from 10-22 LY's Hawkeye club that is trying to play more up-tempo for new coach. UL-Monroe lost its opener 86-67 (+22) at Texas Tech. ULM has new coach, 3 new starters from LY's 12-19/6-12 club.

Washington State won its last seven games vs Idaho (schools are 8 miles apart), winning last four here by 12-31-26-7 points. Coogs have six of top eight scorers back from LY, are more experienced now. Vandals lost 75% of scoring, 78% of rebounding from LY's 15-16/6-10 team, so they are depending on some JC transfers to blend in quickly.

Tough opener for Arizona State team that lost two starters from 22-11/ 12-6 team; they upgraded schedule to get at-large bid to NCAAs- trip to New Mexico is part of that. Lobos (-11) beat pretty good Detroit team 63-54 in their opener- advantage for them to have already played, while this is ASU's opener. Lobos have 3 starters back from 30-5 team.

San Diego State won opener 81-65 at sold-out Long Beach State; trip to Gonzaga will be even tougher game, against Bulldog squad that won first two games by 45-30 points. Zags have four starters back from 27-7 club that went 12-2 in WCC, but Bouldin's graduation does hurt. Aztecs have all five starters back from 25-9/11-5 team. This is a very good game.

Arkansas State (+14) lost 68-60 at Ole Miss in its opener, after being up 8 at half; ASU has four starters back from 17-14/11-7 team that former LSU coach Brady has on the rise. Missouri State has five starters back from 24-12/8-10 team- they return 91% of scoring from LY. Bears won their opener 78-61 over Oral Roberts Friday.

Northern Colorado has three starters back from 25-8/12-4 team, but also has new coach; this is their only home game vs D-I team before January. Wyoming has only one senior; they lost 10 of last 11 games LY. Both of these teams beat obscure teams by big scores in their openers. Wyoming beat Northern Colorado 76-70 in last year's game.

Pepperdine is 0-2, losing by 8 at Portland State, 10 at UCLA; they have all five starters back from LY's 7-24/3-11 team. Waves got 24 points out of star Bell last night, but other than Thompson, other three starters had total of only 11 points. Nevada shot only 34% last night, was minus-11 on boards in neutral court loss to Pacific.

UCLA beat Pepperdine by 10 last night, despite shooting just 5-16 from arc, 14-25 from foul line; one of Bruins' subs was 1-10, 0-4 from arc, so depth could be problem for them. Pacific already has win at UTEP and last night's neutral court win over Nevada. Tigers have 3 starters back from 23-12/12-4 team that is very well-coached.
