    Daily Sports Roundup: November 16

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Sixers take on the Cavaliers and Ohio State meets Florida on the hardwood, while the Preds take to the ice against the Maple Leafs.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The lone college football game on the schedule for Tuesday has Ohio at Temple. The Bobcats (7-3 SU, 6-3 ATS) have won six straight games, doubling up on Buffalo 34-17 at home last time out. Boo Jackson threw for 175 yards and two touchdowns with one interception for Ohio in that win. The Owls (8-2 SU, 7-3 ATS) are riding a four-game winning streak, beating Kent State 28-10 on the road last time out. Mike Gerardi passed for 368 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions for Temple in that game. Both Ohio and Temple have 5-1 records in the East Division of the Mid-American conference.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

There are seven games on the NBA's schedule for Tuesday, with Atlanta at Indiana, Toronto at Washington, the Lakers at Milwaukee, Portland at Memphis, Chicago at Houston, New York at Denver, and Philadelphia at Cleveland. The Sixers (2-8 SU, 5-4-1 ATS) are coming off a 116-93 loss in San Antonio, with Jrue Holiday picking up a team-high 16 points in the defeat. Louis Williams added 13 points off the bench for Philadelphia that game. The Cavaliers (4-5 SU, 4-5 ATS) fell 99-85 at home to Indiana last game, as Antawn Jamison tossed in 19 points. Ramon Sessions added 17 points that day for the Cavs, who are just 1-4 through five home matchups so far this season.

As well, there are many ranked teams in action around college basketball on Tuesday, including a couple at the Preseason NIT: Marist at No. 6 Villanova, and Belmont at No. 24 Tennessee. Other games involving ranked teams on Tuesday: LaSalle at No. 17 Baylor, No. 22 Virginia Tech at No. 3 Kansas State, Detroit at No. 10 Syracuse, Miami-Ohio at No. 1 Duke, No. 16 Butler at Louisville, South Carolina at No. 2 Michigan State, Eastern Washington at No. 17 Washington, No. 25 San Diego State at No. 11 Gonzaga, and No. 4 Ohio State at No. 9 Florida. The Buckeyes blasted N.C. A&T 102-61 in their first game of the year, while the Gators are coming off a 77-60 win over N.C. Wilmington.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, the three NHL games on tap for Tuesday are Philadelphia at Montreal, Anaheim at Dallas, and Nashville at Toronto. The 7-5-3 Predators are coming off a 4-3 home shootout win over the Blackhawks on Saturday night, with Shane O'Brien, Shea Weber, and Cody Franson scoring for Nashville in regulation time. The 5-8-3 Maple Leafs have picked up the loss in each of their last eight games, falling 5-3 at home to Vancouver last time out. Phil Kessel scored his eighth goal of the year for Toronto in that loss, while Fredrik Sjostrom and Mikhail Grabovski also had markers. J-S Giguere made 27 saves.

Bettors' best friend: Tuesday's wagering tips

      Lines to watch

Ohio at Temple - the total opened at 44 points but that was quickly bet up to 44.5.

      Weather to watch

Ohio at Temple – 80 percent chance of showers with winds at 12 mph.

      Who’s hot

Portland is 8-1 against the spread in its last nine games in Memphis.

Chicago Bulls are 10-3 ATS in their last 13 road games dating back to last season.

Philadelphia Flyers have won eight of their last nine games.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have one win in their last 12 games.

      Who’s not

The Los Angeles Lakers have dropped two straight and have covered only once in their last nine meetings with the Milwaukee Bucks.

Atlanta Hawks have lost four of their last five straight up and against the spread.

Philadelphia 76ers have covered only two of their last nine meetings with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

New York Knicks have dropped five in a row straight up and against the spread.

      Key stat

12 – number of quarters the Temple Owls defense has played since giving up their last touchdown. Over the last three games Temple has outscored its opposition 100-10.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Boo Jackson (concussion) Ohio Bobcats – Jackson is considered questionable by some reports and doubtful by others for Tuesday’s game against Temple after he was knocked out in an altercation at an Ohio bar earlier this month. However, the Ohio quarterback did take some snaps this week and there is word that he could travel with the team for the game if doctors clear him on Tuesday morning.

      Game of the day

      Ohio at Temple (-7.5, N/A)

      Notable quotable

"I've seen Brandon get his knee drained and then go out and score 30. I told our guys not to buy into that." - New Orleans coach Monty Williams told reporters about the problems Portland’s Brandon Roy is having with his left knee. Roy managed only two points in 22 minutes of work Saturday against the Hornets and has had his knee drained a couple of times already this year. He’s listed as questionable for Tuesday’s game against Memphis.

      Notes and tips

It’s that time again – the circus is coming to Chicago, sending the Bulls and Blackhawks on the road trip. This year the Bulls will be away from home for seven straight games, though they may not have Kyle Kover for the beginning of the trip. He’s scheduled for an MRI on a sore right knee. The Blackhawks begin a six-day road trip Wednesday in Edmonton.

Los Angeles Lakers forward Lamar Odom was scheduled for an MRI on the bone bruise he’s playing through on the top of his left foot Monday, but results have yet to be released. Odom complained that the injury was burning after Sunday’s loss to the Phoenix Suns. "It's been aching, especially in the morning," Odom told reporters. "I've played a lot of basketball. Hopefully it's just wear and tear, hopefully, and there's nothing wrong." Los Angeles visits the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday.

Washington Wizards rookie John Wall is dealing with a sprained arch in his left foot and was wearing a walking boot following Saturday’s 103-96 loss to the Chicago Bulls - a game in which he had to chase Derrick Rose all around the court. Wall said the foot was swollen following the loss and coach Flip Saunders added the team would have to “wait and see” about Wall’s status for Tuesday’s game.

        Tuesday's six-pack

-- 45 first half points scored by Eagles last night are most ever scored in the first half by a road team in NFL history.

-- Georgia Tech lost 80-63 at Kennesaw State. Not sure why they're playing at KSU, but an ACC team shouldn't lose by 17 there.

-- Hiroki Kuroda signed a 1-year, $12M deal with the Dodgers.

-- Over was 11-2-1 in NFL this week, is 86-57-1 this season.

-- 13 of 28 QBs who started this week had 300+ passing yards, most in one week in NFL history.

-- Sure hope Donovan McNabb signed that contract before the game.

        ************************************************** **

Tuesday's List of 13: Our NFL List of 13..........

        13) Jaguars—Winning Hail Mary Sunday was just 4th game-winning play of 50+ yards to occur on last play of regulation; oddly, journeyman Tim Couch threw two of the other three.

        12) Titans— 3rd-string QB Smith played for Howard Schnellenberger at FAU, who coached the Colts back in the 70’s. He’s like a walking history book of college football—he recruited Joe Namath to Alabama in 1961, and also built the Miami program, starting it on its dominance in the early 80's.

        11) Dolphins—Bringing in Patrick Ramsey and Chris Simms for tryouts this week. Let the Tyler Thigpen era begin!!!! 10) Colts—I swear they might not win a game if #18 ever got hurt, although he did butcher clock management at end of the Bengal game, giving Cincinnati 23 extra seconds when he committed a false start while trying to run the clock down. Indy’s defense had a terrific day Sunday, getting five takeaways.

        9) Giants—FOX posted a graphic that Coach Coughlin, with the Giants, is 41-15 in first half of seasons, 20-29 in second half of seasons. They left out the part about him winning a Super Bowl.

        8) Saints—Interesting time for a bye, just before playing Seattle-Dallas in 5-day stretch. Would expect defending champs to have strong second half.

        7) Eagles— Philly looked like the '72 Dolphins last night. I’m going to Texans-Eagles game in Philly Dec 2nd; it just dawned on me that I really hope its warm that night. Armadillos don’t like the cold.

        6) Jets—Kudos for winning back-to-back OT games on road, but they were favored to win both; at what point will cruel hand of fate work against them, if they keep playing close games?

        5) Packers— How happy must the Packer GM be every time he looks at what is unfolding in Minnesota? I’m thinking the later in season your bye comes, the better it is, at least for the contenders.

        4) Patriots—When your star players coach their teammates the way Brady was Sunday night, it makes life an awful lot easier for the actual coaches. Its called leadership.

        3) Falcons—Having 10 days off after Thursday night win is little bit like having another mini-bye. Ryan is 18-1 as a starter in the Georgia Dome.

        2) Steelers—Better get the offensive line healthy, or else. Have been outscored 60-37 in second half of last three games.

        1) Ravens—I know they just lost in Atlanta, but they got hosed by non-call on offensive interference. My thought is if every NFL game was played in high school stadium in Wichita, all neutral fields, that Ravens would be the best team. Still not understanding their choice of Bulger over Troy Smith as backup QB, though.

College Funds: Today's best NCAAB bets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Virginia Tech Hokies at Kansas State Wildcats (-6.5)
While this game features the best head-to-head player battle of the college hoops season so far (Delaney vs. Pullen), the big story is brewing in Manhattan.

Kansas State coach Frank Martin, known to be about as stable as downtown Mogadishu, is considering benching his top forward again in this important matchup of Top 25 programs.

Senior Curtis Kelly was sat out of the Wildcats’ opening game against James Madison Friday for a lack of effort in practice and may not see the court or even dress against the Hokies Tuesday night.

Kelly apparently received the message from his coach and has been picking up the pace this week. However, it may take a lot more to win over Martin, who has his eyes on a bigger prize than a non-conference win over Virginia Tech, like competing for the national championship.

"Just because he's been halfway decent for two days I'm not going to do back flips," Martin told the Kansas City Star. "He's got to do right for an extended period of time. The last couple days he's been more the way that he needs to be, unlike the way he's been for the three and four weeks leading into last game."

Most coaches would call off the dogs after a game on the bench, but not Martin. Kansas State could also be playing without standout junior Jamar Samuels in the frontcourt. He suffered an eye injury in the opener and is questionable for Tuesday’s contest.

                Pick: Virginia Tech

Ohio State Buckeyes at Florida Gators (-1.5)

Jared Sullinger may not be getting the same All-America buzz as fellow freshmen Harrison Barnes and Kyrie Irving, but the newest Ohio State big man is letting his game speak for itself.

The 6-foot-9, 280-pound first-year stud out of Columbus scored 19 points, pulled down 14 boards and added two assists in just 21 minutes in the Buckeyes’ season opener against North Carolina A&T.

Now, he faces the first true test of his college career, going up against a deep Florida frontcourt that features Alex Tyus, Chandler Parsons, Vernon Macklin and freshman reserve Patric Young.

While Sullinger will draw the attention of the Gators’ big men, Ohio State’s perimeter will be moving without the ball and making the most of the space on the wings. Coach Thad Matta expects his team to benefit from the inside-out play a talent like Sullinger can bring to the team, much like Greg Oden did a few years back.

“Throwing it into Sully, he attracts a lot of attention, and we feel it's going to leave open shots for people on the floor,” senior Jon Diebler told the Cleveland Plain Dealer. “Passes will be going from inside out instead of going from the outside in like we did for the past however many years."

Expect Sullinger and the Buckeyes to keep Florida guessing all night.

                Pick: Ohio State

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Knicks at Denver Nuggets (-9, 216.5)

Carmelo Anthony has been linked to the New York Knicks in numerous trade rumors for months. At least the Knicks will get a first-hand look at what Anthony brings to the table on Tuesday.

‘Melo leads the Nuggets in just about every significant statistical category with 25 points, eight rebounds, 1.4 steals, and 0.8 blocks per game. Plus, he just helped the Nuggets hand the Lakers their first loss of the year with 32 points and 13 rebounds. After the game, Kobe Bryant had his own opinions about all the ‘Melo trade rumors.

"I think people are making too big of a deal out of it,'' Bryant said. “(Stuff) happens. He's still here. You got to continue to play. The day he gets traded then it will be a story.''

Considering the start Anthony has had to the year, it seems like that’s the approach he’s taking too. As long as he keeps doing that, it’s good news for Nuggets bettors.

                      Pick: Denver

Philadelphia 76ers at Cleveland Cavaliers (N/A)

Philadelphia 76ers coach Doug Collins is introducing rookie Evan Turner to the NBA just how he wants to – slowly.

The 22-year-old swing man is averaging 8.5 points and 2.1 assists per game and is playing a lot less than Washington’s John Wall as Philadelphia wants to make sure not to tire him out early.

"It's a big growth to step into the NBA and all of a sudden, you're on a road trip and you're playing in Oklahoma City Wednesday, and then you travel," Collins told reporters of Philadelphia’s recent schedule. "You got Dallas and you fly and get in late and you got to learn how to handle how to tell the difference from college, where you play every four days. It's a part of the growth experience and Evan will be fine."

Turner has started four straight games, looking really good in the first two and not so good in the final pair. That’s to be expected from the kid and there’s no point in rushing him along with this team. Philadelphia has dropped three straight and has just two wins on the year.

Expect to see a couple of struggling teams going bucket-for-bucket on Tuesday.

                      Pick: Over

Philadelphia Flyers at Montreal Canadiens (-120, 5.5)

The last thing the Montreal Canadiens needed heading into a date with the red-hot Philadelphia Flyers was another injury to No. 1 defenseman Andrei Markov.

Markov was playing just his seventh game since coming back from major knee surgery on Saturday, but he ran into Eric Staal awkwardly and now the team is worried he may have done major damage to that same knee. No official report has been made on the injury but the club is just hoping to have him back by Christmas, while other rumors have him done for the year.

"It's a team game and we have more depth on defense," Canadiens coach Jacques Martin told NHL.com. "We've played better 5-on-5 all year and it's only in the last week that our power play began working. Our penalty killing has been good all year and our goaltending's been excellent."

All of that’s true, but it’s hard to replace the 34 points he had last year in 43 games before getting hurt. P.K. Subban is going to have to shoulder a much heavier load until Markov gets back and he could be in for a rough ride against the bruising Flyers.

                          Pick: Flyers

Anaheim Ducks at Dallas Stars (-140, 5.5)

The Dallas Stars know they’re top heavy with their forward lines. They need a ton of production out of Brad Richards’ line every night just to keep Dallas in games and when that doesn't happen, the Stars struggle.

That’s exactly what’s going on right now as Dallas heads into Tuesday’s game riding a three-game losing streak in which the club has managed only three goals.

"We had the puck on our stick a number of times to try to get the goal, and it just didn't happen," Stars coach Marc Crawford told reporters after Dallas dropped a 4-2 decision to the Ducks last Friday. "So we've got to keep trying to find ways to persevere. You have to find ways to get the pucks on the net and in the net."

They get another crack at the Ducks here, but these offensive problems have to be worrying for the Stars. They opened the year 4-0 but have gone 3-6 since and haven’t converted on the power play in three games.

                          Pick: Ducks

Butler Bulldogs at Louisville Cardinals [ESPN | 8:00 PM ET]

BULLDOGS: The last time Butler took the court against a D-I team, they were playing for the National Championship. The Bulldogs will enter tonight's road contest as the 18th ranked team in the country. While not expected to duplicate what they did last year, the Bulldogs still have plenty of talent to make another deep run in March. C Matt Howard will look to build on last year's Horizon League Player of the Year award, where he averaged 11.6 PPG and 5.2 RPG. His teammate Shelvin Mack is the preseason pick to be this year's conference player of the year. PG Ronald Nored is the team leader and the reigning co-defensive player of the year in the Horizon league. Last season, the Bulldogs won an astounding 33 games. Butler will look to use their experience they gained last year when taking the court tonight against a talented Louisville team. The Bulldogs are 45-21-1 ATS in their last 67 non-conference games. Butler is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 Tuesday games. The Bulldogs are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall.

Bulldogs are 4-1 ATS last 5 road games.
                            Under is 5-0 last 5 non-conference games.

                            Key Injuries - None Reported.

Projected Score: 68 (SIDE of the Day)

CARDINALS: (-1) Louisville is in rebuilding mode, as they are replacing 4 key starters from last year's team. The Cardinals are also struggling to deal with the surprise loss of F Samardo Samuels, who went to the NBA. The good news for Cardinals faithful is the fact they have a strong freshman class thanks to Coach Pitino. With no known stars, Pitino has stated that his team will go back to his "kamikaze" style of defense. Louisville will look to play full court defense, ensuring that the Cardinals play the style of basketball they want. Replacing more than 50% of the Cardinals scoring and assists won't be easy, but you must respect the program. Over the past 9 seasons, Louisville has won 72% of their games. The Cardinals are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games against a team with a winning SU record. Louisville is 2-8 ATS in their last 10 Tuesday games. The Cardinals are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 home games. The Cardinals are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games overall.

Cardinals are 1-6 ATS last 7 non-conference games.
                            Over is 6-2 last 8 non-conference games.

Key Injuries - F Jared Swopshire (hernia) is doubtful.

                            Projected Score: 64
