College football opening line report: Week 12

The expectations placed on the Virginia Tech Hokies this season were a tad unrealistic, weren’t they? The defense was undergoing a makeover, the ACC – at least in the preseason – was supposed to be tougher overall, and Frank Beamer’s squad had a difficult schedule to navigate.

And for further emphasis, let’s be clear. A lot of the attention – deserved or not – in the early going was simply due to the fact that the Hokies were poised to play Boise State in the opener on Labor Day night. If the Hokies opened at home, in a ho-hum game on a Saturday afternoon, no one would have even noticed.

As it was, the nation’s eyes turned to Virginia Tech in Week 1 as many expected them to compete for a national title. Then, within hours, the nation promptly turned away from them after a 33-30 loss to those beastly Broncos. To make matters worse, the Hokies dropped a stunner the next week, 21-16, to James Madison, further wiping them off the national radar.

But my, how things change in this crazy game.

Two months later, if you use a realistic scale, the Hokies are right where they really deserve to be. They are, more than likely, the best team in their conference, they have clearly erased the terrible start, and with a win on Saturday at Miami, they can secure a bid in the ACC title game.

So, with all this buzz now surrounding this team nationally, just what is the perception of them where it really counts? What do the pros think of the Hokies out there in Las Vegas?

“They're looking really good these days, there's no question," said Pete Korner of the Sports Club in Las Vegas. "There were no issues on who should be the favorite here. We made Virginia Tech a 3-point favorite, and I can see it going higher."

As with any ACC team, it’s always going to be tough to garner national respect in the BCS era. But it’s clear that Beamer has taught his team well. They don’t care what you think of them. They just want to win their league, and let everything else fall into place.

“I think people will eventually respect us,” Hokies quarterback Tyrod Taylor said. “Some people don’t and some people won’t, but all we’ve got to do is go out there and win games every week.”

That’s exactly what they’ve done for the better part of two months now. But will it continue against the up-and-down Hurricanes?

“Well, anything can happen in the ACC," Korner said. "But, clearly, this is Virginia Tech's game to win. It means more to them."

And with that, let’s take a look at some other marquee games in Week 12, and the opening opinion being generated out in the desert:

Fresno State (+30) at Boise State

"As much as a 30-point underdog can hang around, we think Fresno State can hang around a little," Korner said. "But, in the end, we had to give Boise State the highest number we had. It might be tight for a little bit, but it's hard not to see another Boise State blowout when it's said and done.”

Wisconsin (-6) at Michigan

"Should be another, great Big Ten game," Korner said. "Wisconsin is really showing their talent now. They are the team now in the Big Ten, for sure. I can see this going up to seven."

Stanford (-5) at Cal

"Cal plays really well at home, and we had to account for that," Korner said. "But Stanford is in the Top 10, and they really need this one more. It's a rivalry, but for this season, this game means more to Stanford."

Ohio State (-4) at Iowa

"This is anybody's ball game," Korner said. "But Ohio State is playing really well now, and we wanted to make sure we made it higher than a field goal. We'll see how the action goes early on, but this one will be tight. Another close, Big Ten ball game."

Arkansas (-5) at Mississippi State

"This is one of those lines, that if the game was earlier in the year, the number would have been much higher," Korner said. "Arkansas can handle this team, and I like them as a play this week. For now, we have it at five, but I can see it going higher as the week goes on."

Nebraska (-3) at Texas A&M

"People just keep on betting Nebraska," Korner said. "It's been that way all year. In this game, another great one, let's face it, this is really a pick 'em game. But people like to bet Nebraska, so we made them the favorite. That certainly doesn't mean A&M is overmatched here. They can certainly win this game. And I'm very curious, given where we put this line, to see what the players do with it early on."

Ohio Bobcats at Temple Owls (-7.5)

The leaders in the MAC East Division meet for top honors in the conference Tuesday night.

Boo-urns

Bobcats quarterback Boo Jackson is questionable for Tuesday’s game after getting knocked out and suffering a concussion in a bar fight two weeks ago.

Jackson was involved in an altercation in which people were trying to enter a bar from an alternative entrance on November 6. Jackson was among the crowd and was KO’d by a bouncer. He was taken to the hospital for treatment and released that Sunday morning.

"I'm ready," Jackson told reporters at practice this week. "I feel one hundred percent, but the doctors have to take their precautions, and I don't want to rush into things or anything like that."

If Jackson is sidelined, Ohio will go with backup Phil Bates, a junior transfer from Iowa State. He’s thrown 20 passes, completing nine for 178 yards and is primarily used as a running back, leading the Bobcats with 423 yards and three touchdowns on the ground this season.

Jackson's status is holding back the total for Tuesday's game at many sportsbooks.

Here we go again

The Owls are going to a bowl game, again. But rest assured they’d prefer to go as the MAC champ.

Last fall, the Temple football team went into its final three Mid-American Conference outings needing to go 3-0 to assure the Owls of the East Division title and a berth in the league's championship game.

But a loss at Ohio on the last day of the regular season left Temple with only a share of the division crown and sent the Bobcats to the MAC title game.

Now, the Owls have presented themselves with much the same opportunity.

Temple defeated defensively staunch Kent State, 28-10, at Dix Stadium 10 days ago and returns home for the rematch with OU this week, with first place once again on the line.

"Every game is a season. We have 22 days where all of this is going to be determined. I think we're focused, but we're going to need a lot of energy to match their energy. It's a big game for everybody,” said Temple coach Al Golden.

After suffering a season-opening loss at Lincoln Financial Field to start the 2009 season, the Owls have bounced back to win 10 straight home games.

Sophomore spark

The insertion of sophomore QB Mike Gerardi has lifted the Owls both on and off the field.

In the last 15 quarters he's gone 54-for-81 for 865 yards, with eight touchdowns and four picks.

He's developed as a leader and person," Golden noted. "He's growing in the role. But he has been, for 4 or 5 weeks now, even before [he got in]. He's playing with poise, making good decisions. It's not just Mike. But certainly he came in and moved the ball.”

"He earned his opportunity. And he's making the most of it. He's provided us with a spark, clearly.”

Walk this way

On a typical Division-I football team, 85 players receive scholarships, while the remaining total is comprised of walk-ons.

A walk-on is an athlete who, instead of joining the team on scholarship, is required to pay for his own tuition and room and board.

But for the first three years under coach Golden, the football team had to fill a larger-than-normal portion of its roster with walk-ons, due to the program’s low academic progress rate.

Temple’s APR suffered following former coach Bobby Wallace’s decision to bring in risky junior-college transfers.

When Golden took over the program in winter 2005, he realized a successful walk-on program would be necessary to be competitive. Thus, the Local 215 was born.

“It originated from necessity because we only had 54 scholarship players our first year,” Golden said. “We were playing teams with 85, and it was going to take us two or three years before we could be a full Division I-A program again.”

Golden was faced with the unenviable task of convincing high school players to forgo any potential scholarships and instead pay their own way at Temple. He said one of the selling points he used was Temple’s low in-state tuition.

“Our in-state tuition is one of the best deals in the country,” Golden said. “If your kid wanted to play I-A football and he was from the state of Pennsylvania or from D.C., it’s one of the best values in the country in terms of the tuition.”

Gerardi, originally recruited by Connecticut before the Huskies pulled the offer, and sophomore running back Matt Brown, a 5-foot-5 native of Baltimore – two of the team’s leaders on offense – are alumni of the Local 215.

Brown established himself as a reliable offensive weapon and has rushed for 529 yards and five touchdowns on 89 carries.

“We don’t turn this program around without our walk-on program,” Golden added.

May the force be with you

Ohio defensive lineman Stafford Gatling is a force on the OU front.

Gatling, a fifth-year senior from Burlington, N.C., recorded six tackles, including 1.5 sacks and two tackles for loss with a forced fumble in Ohio's 34-17 win over Buffalo on November 4. He was named Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Week last Monday by the league office.

Gatling's constant pressure in the Buffalo backfield helped hold the Bulls to 84 yards passing and just eight completions in 27 attempts.

For the season, “Gatling-gun” has connected for five sacks and 11 tackles for loss to go along with 39 tackles.

• Under head coach Frank Solich, OU is 28-12-2 against the spread in conference games, including 12-4 off back-to-back wins.

Miami (Ohio) Redhawks at Akron Zips (+10, 47.5)

Bettors have two Mid-American Conference choices to pick from when it comes to Wednesday night college football betting this week, but really only one of the two games has an overly interesting storyline - that’s the matchup between Miami (Ohio) and Akron.

I’d like to say that Miami is the only team that has something to play for in this game, but that wouldn’t be totally accurate. The Redhawks still have a shot at the MAC’s East Division title if they win out and Ohio loses on Tuesday night to Temple. So their motivation could be clear. But

Akron also has something to play for - to not be the only team in the country to finish winless. Indeed, the Zips are the only club with zip in the win column remaining.

It’s the second Wednesday night game in a row for Miami (Ohio), which beat Bowling Green, 24-21, last week thanks to a field goal by Trevor Cook on the game’s final play. But that game showed a bit of a trend for Miami (Ohio), which is 3-0 in MAC road games for the first time since 2003. In two of those three games, Miami (Ohio) held a lead of 10 or more points, let it get away and had to win with last-second heroics as was the case against BGSU when Miami (Ohio) blew a 21-7 fourth-quarter lead. The Bowling Green win was the first Miami (Ohio) victory on the game's last play since Ben Roethlisberger led the team past Akron back in 2001.

Akron would probably like to just have a lead at this point. But the Zips do enter off their best effort of the season, a 37-30 double-overtime loss at Ball State on November 6. Patrick Nicely’s interception in the second overtime finished off Akron, which lost its 14th straight road game. Still, it was only the second game (and first vs. an FBS foe) that didn’t end as a loss by more than a double-digit margin this year for the Zips.

This will be the first meeting between Akron and Miami (Ohio) since 2007, with the Redhawks holding a 13-5-1 series lead. They’re 4-4 in Akron. Miami (Ohio) has won six of the past seven matchups overall. This is the first-ever midweek game held on Akron’s campus.

Team matchups

Akron is probably the worst offensive team in the country as it ranks in the bottom 20 in the nation in rushing yards, passing yards, total offense (dead last) and scoring offense (as well as scoring defense).

The Zips have just a combined 17 offensive touchdowns. Six of Akron's eight rushing touchdowns this season have come courtesy of senior RB Alex Allen. Five of the passing TDs have gone to senior WR Jeremy LaFrance, who returned to the lineup at Ball State (after missing two games) with two TD catches. Nicely has played in all 12 games, completing 48.7 percent of his passes for 1,360 yards.

Redhawks quarterback Zac Dysert is still considered questionable for this game. Dysert, who has thrown for 2,406 yards and is tied for 10th in the FBS with 222 completions, was hurt in the second quarter of the Bowling Green. Redshirt freshman Austin Boucher would start if Dysert, who has averaged better than 295 yards passing in his past four games, can’t go. Miami (Ohio) could use Dysert considering it’s second-to-last in the nation in rushing.

Line movement

The line opened as high as 13 at some books while the total hasn’t much moved. Approximately 70 percent of the lean is on Miami (Ohio). The Redhawks are 6-4 ATS this year and 4-2 on the road. Akron is 3-7 ATS and 0-4 at home.

This and that

- With a 6-4 record, Miami (Ohio) is now bowl eligible. It has five more victories than it recorded in all of 2009 (1-11). No other team in Division I has improved as much.

- Akron head coach Rob Ianello and Miami coach Mike Haywood were members of Charlie Weis' staff at Notre Dame from 2005-08.

- Miami (Ohio) is 1-9 ATS in its past 10 as a favorite of 3.5-10 points.

- The over is 12-3 in Akron’s past 15 as a home dog.

- The favorite is 5-1 ATS in the past six in this series.
