Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Maple Leafs at Florida Panthers (-145, 5.5)

The Maple Leafs came blazing out of the gates, but have reverted back to their normal (and expected) form, dropping five straight contests while gaining only two points heading into Tuesday's game with Tampa Bay.

The biggest cause of the skid can be attributed to Toronto sniper Phil Kessel, who has not even been able to tally a single point in those five losses.

The Leafs will also continue to without top defenseman Dion Phaneuf, who is out with a severe leg laceration.

For the Leafs to get back to their winning ways, Kessel and Co. will need to get back on track against Tomas Vokoun and the Panthers.

Vokoun has also struggled lately, but he is still one of the game’s better netminders and he should be able to prolong the Leafs’ woes at least one more game.

Florida also has been getting strong play from leading scorer David Booth, while Rostislav Olesz has three points in his last three games.

      Pick: Panthers

Buffalo Sabres at New Jersey Devils

Two of the league’s premier goalies will likely be out when the Sabres visit the Devils Wednesday.

Last year’s Vezina Trophy winner, Ryan Miller, has missed the past four games for the Sabres with a “lower-body injury” while the Devils’ Martin Brodeur injured his elbow two games ago and sat out New Jersey’s last game Friday night.

Miller is out indefinitely while Brodeur is listed as doubtful – bad news for both teams who use their netminders as their anchors.

Buffalo allowed 14 goals in the four games that Miller missed and ended up losing three of those efforts. Goaltending duties have fallen to third-string rookie Swede Jhonas Enroth for the past two games because second stringer Patrick Lalime has been out with an undisclosed illness.

Enroth is 1-1 in two starts with a mere .865 save percentage.

Johan Hedberg, meanwhile, will likely play in his fifth game this season for New Jersey. Hedberg is 1-2 in his starts with a pitiful save percentage of .824.

      Pick: Over

New York Islanders at Anaheim Ducks (-165, 5.5)

Anaheim started the season as poorly as one team could, being outscored 13-2 in three opening losses, but has rounded into shape, winning four straight after downing the Sharks in overtime Tuesday.

The Ducks’ turnaround can be directly tied to the improved play of their top scorers. Ryan Getzlaf has three goals in his last five games and Corey Perry has six points in a five-game point streak. Veteran Teemu Selanne has seven points in his last five games, while Bobby Ryan has six in his last four.

Ryan and Getzlaf set up Perry for his sixth, a second-period goal that put Anaheim up 2-1 against San Jose. The Ducks ended up winning 3-2 with a Lubomir Visnovsky goal in overtime.

As the Ducks have gotten better, the Islanders are in a freefall. They’ve lost seven straight games, allowing 31 goals in the process. The offense has dried up as well, with the team managing more than one goal only once in their past five losses.

Star centre John Tavares has just one assist in his past five games and, with the Islanders having to travel across the country to play, it doesn’t bode well for their chances of ending their slide.

      Pick: Ducks

College Funds: Today's best NCAAB bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toledo Rockets at Illinois Fighting Illini (-30, N/A)

Illinois looked like a contender for the Big Ten title Monday night, at least for the first half of its opening game against UC Irvine.

The Illini held a 42-18 lead at the midway mark, making bettors feel quiet comfy giving the 21 points to the Anteaters. But, they took their foot off the gas in the second half, getting outscored 47-37 and blowing the payday with a 79-65 win.

Coach Bruce Weber, who wasn’t impressed with his team’s efforts in the preseason, knew his players would come out flat in the final 20 minutes after watching them warm up before the second half kicked off.

"I decided to just let them go and use it as a learning lesson,'' Weber told the Star Courier. "The first thing I said in the locker room was, 'How was warmup?' They said not good. How did we play in the second half? Not good.

"We talked all along about our goals. One of them was controlling the home court and learning to be intimidating. We were intimidating in the first half. We were all over the place. You've got to do that against the best teams and do that for longer, extended periods.''

With that lesson fresh in the heads of the Illini, expect a full 40-minute effort from Illinois against the Rockets Wednesday night.

        Pick: Illinois

Charleston Cougars at Maryland Terrapins (-14, 157.5)

A lot of questions surround Gary Williams’ program heading into this season, most prominent is how the Terrapins plan to move on without star guard Greivis Vasquez. Maryland bettors may have gotten an answer Monday night.

The Terps knocked off the Seattle Redhawks in their season opener, winning 105-76 as 19.5-point favorites. The most encouraging part of Monday’s victory was the production from Maryland’s youngsters. Freshman guard Terrell Stoglin scored 15 points while fellow first-year guard Pe'Shon Howard chipped in with five points and eight assists.

Williams went with 11 players in the first half and finished giving run to all 13 uniforms. With the mix-and-match lineups, the Terrapins did struggle with turnovers, coughing up the ball 29 times – 15 of those in the first half. Stoglin and Howard were responsible for seven of those turnovers.

"They were great for their first college game," Williams told the Washington Post of his freshman guards. "They played with lot of confidence. They're going to try some passes that probably don't work, but (ideally) they won't try them again. That's where you see if they're making progress: If they don't try them again."

Terps fans will see a tighter offense on Wednesday as Williams gets a better grasp on this roster.

        Pick: Maryland
