    Daily Sports Roundup: November 10

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Blues try to keep their streak alive against the Jackets, while Miami (Ohio) meets Bowling Green, and the Rockets battle the Wizards.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

There's one college football game on the Wednesday schedule, with Miami (Ohio) at Bowling Green. The RedHawks (5-4 SU, 4-4 ATS) beat Buffalo 21-9 on the road in their most recent contest, as Zac Dysert threw for 231 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. The Falcons (2-7 SU, 5-4 ATS) are coming off a rare win, getting past Central Michigan 17-14 last time out. Willie Geter ran for 103 yards for Bowling Green in that game. Oddsmakers have Miami (Ohio) pegged as the 2.5-point road favorite for this Wednesday night game, while the total for the contest has been set at 50.5 points.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up 10 games on Wednesday, with Milwaukee at Atlanta, Utah at Orlando, Charlotte at Toronto, New Jersey at Cleveland, Golden State at New York, Philadelphia at Oklahoma City, Dallas at Memphis, the Clippers at San Antonio, Minnesota at Sacramento, and Houston at Washington. The Rockets (1-5 SU, 3-3 ATS) finally broke into the win column in their last game on Sunday, knocking off Minnesota 120-94 at home. Luis Scola led the way with 24 points for Houston that day. The Wizards (1-4 SU, 1-4 ATS) have been equally miserable to start the season, falling 107-102 at home to Cleveland last game. John Wall had 13 points and 10 assists in the loss.

There are also four college basketball games on Wednesday night, all regional action in the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer: Illinois Chicago at No. 5 Pittsburgh, Charleston at Maryland, Toledo at No. 13 Illinois, and Louisiana Tech at Texas. That event got underway on Monday night, with Pittsburgh (83-75 over Rhode Island), Maryland (105-76 over Seattle), Illinois (79-65 over UC Irvine), and Texas (83-52 over Navy) all putting up wins. The championship round will begin on November 18.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are six games on the National Hockey League schedule for Wednesday, with Buffalo at New Jersey, Boston at Pittsburgh, Toronto at Florida, Phoenix at Chicago, the Islanders at Anaheim, and St. Louis at Columbus. The 9-1-2 Blues extended their winning streak to seven games on Sunday, picking up a 2-0 road win over the Rangers. Alexander Steen scored both St. Louis goals in that contest, while backup netminder Ty Conklin made 27 saves for the shutout. The 8-5-0 Blue Jackets fell 3-2 at home to the Wild in their last game on Saturday, with Mathieu Garon allowing three goals on 24 shots. Rick Nash and Kyle Wilson scored for Columbus in that defeat.

Bettors' best friend: Wednesday's wagering tips

      Lines to watch

Bowling Green opened as a 3.5-point underdog to Miami (Ohio) but is now listed at +2.5.

      Who’s hot

Miami (Ohio) Redhawks have covered in eight of their last 10 meetings against Bowling Green.

Houston Rockets are 11-4 ATS in their last 14 games against Washington.

Philadelphia 76ers are 7-3-1 in their last 11 meetings with Oklahoma City.

St. Louis Blues have won seven straight games.

      Who’s not

New Jersey Nets have lost four straight games, going 2-2 against the spread.

Los Angeles Clippers are 0-9 ATS in their last nine games against San Antonio.

New Jersey Devils have two wins in their last eight.

New York Islanders have lost seven straight games.

      Key stat

40.8 – percentage of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ faceoffs captain Sidney Crosby has taken so far this year. Once a weak part in Crosby’s game, he now takes the highest percentage of his team’s draws in the NHL and is winning 57.5 percent of those.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Jeff Green (ankle) Oklahoma City Thunder – Starting power forward Jeff Green’s status for Wednesday’s game against Philadelphia is still up in the air. Green says his ankle feels much better but still sat out Monday’s practice.

      Game of the day

Miami (Ohio) at Bowling Green (+2.5, 50)

      Notable quotable

“We’re close. It’s not good enough. I think our desperation level needs to go up a bit, but we’re not a mile away — I think we’re real close, we’re right there every game.” – Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere said about his team’s 5-5-3 start heading into Tuesday’s game. The Leafs play again on Wednesday against the Florida Panthers.

      Notes and tips

Washington Wizards coach Flip Saunders sent his players off the floor during a morning scrimmage on Monday morning. Saunders didn’t appreciate hearing a lot of complaining and said his young club wasn’t focused and didn’t compete like he expected them to, so he sent them home and scheduled another workout for later that afternoon.

Boston Bruins winger Nathan Horton has been promoted to the top power-play unit with David Krejci, out with a concussion. Horton has six goals and 11 points this season and also has three goals and four points with the man advantage. Boston’s power play is clicking at a 21.4 percent clip which is good for ninth in the league heading into Wednesday’s game against Pittsburgh.

The Houston Rockets are getting ready to look at ways to increase Yao Ming’s minutes. They want to get to a point where he can play 24 minutes a game and may even look at the possibility that he could play in back-to-backs. Originally the club wasn’t planning on having him in those situations until January.

Wednesday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind........

        13) If he studies history, Boise State coach Chris Petersen is liable to stay in Boise longer than you might think he would, since former Boise coach Dan Hawkins was fired by Colorado Monday.

Not very surprising; Hawkins simply didn’t win enough to keep a job at that level, but the thing is, Colorado is a smaller fish in a big pond. Boise is the biggest fish in a small pond. Always more fun to be the biggest fish. Another former Boise coach, Dirk Koetter, went to Arizona State and got fired (he’s now in the NFL). Maybe Boise makes the coach, not the other way around.

        12) Hawkins was making $1.5M (his buyout is $2M), which seems like a lot until you realize he ranked 11th in salary in the Big 12. Iowa State is only Big 12 school that pays its coach less than Colorado.

        11) Colorado moves to the Pac-12 next year; will be interesting to see who they go after to replace Hawkins. 70-year old Bill McCartney, who last coached in 1994 but did lead the Buffaloes to the 1990 national title, is said to want the job.

        10) All of which sets up a surreal Senior Day in Boulder, with Hawkins’ son Cody the lone healthy QB on the Buffs, and also an outgoing senior. Will his dad be there with his son on Senior Day? What must Mrs Hawkins be thinking? ESPN missed the boat bigtime this year, not doing a reality show revolving around this unusual situation. Would have been excellent TV.

        9) Have to think Milwaukee Brewers hired Angels’ bench coach Ron Roenicke at least in part due to the success former Angel coaches Bud Black and Joe Maddon have had as managers. Mike Scioscia does things the right way, and his coaches take that knowledge with them when they move on.

        8) I’m a 16-team keeper fantasy baseball league. Free agency is always a weird time, since fate of some of your players can change drastically, depending on where they sign as free agents. Carl Crawford is on my team; I’m glad he’s getting away from the artificial turf in the Trop, but I’m hoping he goes to Houston or the Red Sox and not the Angels. Think the small ballpark in Houston would be better for his numbers.

        7) OK, so the Jets’ kicker didn’t know NFL regular season games have sudden death OT rules; he though the new playoff rules applied to the regular season, where each team is guaranteed one possession. They should, but they don’t, at least not yet.

        6) NCAA denied Iowa State basketball player Royce White immediate eligibility after he transferred from Minnesota; White never played for the Gophers, but transferred to ISU in July after having off-the-court issues with Minnesota. Cyclones are rebuilding, they could really use him now.

        5) San Diego Chargers used the same long snapper (David Binn) from 2002-2009; so far this year, they’ve had five different long snappers.

        4) Part of the reason Buffalo has been so competitive the last three weeks is that they’ve converted 32 of their last 56 (57.1%) 3rd down conversions; they’re doing everything but winning.

        4) I had no idea Colt McCoy would do this well as a rookie with the Browns. No idea. Zero. Good for him.

        3) Tigers signed Jhonny Peralta to a 2-year, $11.5M deal, keeping him in Detroit. Tigers have Magglio Ordonez' big contract coming off the books this winter, so they have some money to spend.

        2) This is the second year in a row the World Series MVP got dumped by the team he helped win; Edgar Renteria hit a dramatic HR last Monday, then was an ex-Giant before the week was over, almost before the victory parade had ended. Baseball is weird sometimes.

        1) Carolina Panthers have been outscored 88-33 in first half of their last seven games; seems like a long time ago they led the Giants 16-14 at halftime of the season opener in the Swamp. Giants are one of the best best teams in the NFL, at season’s halfway point. Carolina is probably the worst team.

Houston Rockets at Washington Wizards [ESPN | 8:15 PM ET]

ROCKETS: (-3, O/U 212.5) Houston has been dealt a tough blow, as they are getting ready to play the next month without injured PG Aaron Brooks. Brooks was the leader and distributor of this Rockets offense. Houston is 1-5 SU and 3-3 ATS this season. WIZARDS: Washington is off to a tough start to their season at 1-4 both SU and ATS. Unlike last year, there is plenty of optimism with this Wizards bunch. Part of that buzz surrounds #1 overall draft pick John Wall. Wall has proven not only to be incredibly talented, but also a showstopper that puts bodies in the seats. Washington is 1-2 ATS as the listed underdog this season, and will be playing their 1st home game as the listed underdog this season tonight. The Wizards are averaging 97.4 PPG, 9th worst in the NBA. Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Golden State Warriors at New York Knicks

The Warriors’ East Coast road trip just got a bit tougher after guard Monta Ellis, the NBA’s leading scorer, left Golden State’s 109-102 win over the Toronto Raptors with a back injury Monday.

Ellis left the game after taking an awkward fall late in the fourth quarter, however, the team says the injury is not too serious. Ellis stayed in Toronto for examination and his X-rays came back negative. His status for Wednesday’s game in New York is still up in the air.

"At first, I thought he was upset that he didn't get a foul call," point guard Stephen Curry told the San Francisco Chronicle of Ellis’ fall. "He had a look of frustration on his face. Hopefully, it's not serious, but it's scary to see him being helped off the floor.

"You know, he's a tough guy who will hopefully bounce back quickly."

Golden State is dependent on Ellis’ 28 point per game, which makes up 27 percent of the team’s scoring. Even him playing at less than 100 percent could take its toll on the Warriors offensive output.

                Pick: Under

                Dallas Mavericks at Memphis Grizzlies

Dallas’ defense is making believers out of NBA total bettors this season.

The Mavericks are 1-5 over/under, playing below the number in five straight games, and are allowing under 92 points a night – ranked fourth in the league. However, Dallas has a tough matchup Wednesday, visiting a very athletic Grizzlies squad that can put the ball in the basket.

Memphis is fifth in the NBA in scoring, pouring in 105.6 point a game, and have won back-to-back games at home. The Grizzlies have a ton of weapons on offense, getting double-figure scoring from Rudy Gay, O.J. Mayo, Mike Conley, Zach Randolph, Marc Gasol and Darrell Arthur.

Dallas won the first meeting between these two Southwest Division foes, 91-90 at home, on October 29, which played under the 199.5-point total. Memphis is out to avenge that tight loss and will pour on the points in the process.

                Pick: Over

                      Wednesday, November 10

Maryland was up 10 at half Monday, won by 29 over Seattle tean that is making transition to D-I; Terps lost three starters from last year's club that went 24-9 (13-3 in ACC) but they expect to be quicker and better on defense. Charleston beat North Carolina LY, but lost to Clemson by 39, Tennessee by 17. Cougars have three starters back from 22-12 team.

Pitt should have better crowd tonight (Steelers were playing during their game Monday); they survived 14-32 shooting from arc in holding off a gritty URI team 83-75 Monday (up 1 at half). Ill-Chicago's coach quit in July after an 8-22 season; they've got three starters back from 8-22, 3-15 team. Doubtful they're ready to hang in with Pitt squad that already has a game under its belt.

Illinois was up 24 at the half in its opener vs Cal-Irvine, won 79-65, as they held Anteaters to 35% from floor; Illini blocked eight shots. Toledo was 4-28 LY, winning one game after Dec 10; new coach Kowalczyk had 44 wins in last two years at Green Bay. Rockets have only four players back from LY. Michigan transfer Wright figures to help immediately.

Texas was up 29-20 at half, pulled away from weak Navy squad 83-52 in its opener; Longhorns lost three starters from 24-10/9-7 team that had chemistry issues. Louisiana Tech has nine new players, only couple of returning starters from LY's 24-11/9-7 team. Tech has only one senior; they lost to Arizona by 16, New Mexico by 29 LY, and they had much more experienced team LY.
