College football opening line report: Week 10

They are both coming off much-needed byes. They are both still in the Top 15. And they are both still in the hunt for the SEC as well as the national title.

Yet no one seems to be talking about LSU and Alabama anymore, are they? Auburn? Sure. Oregon? You betcha. TCU? Boise State? All getting serious play and publicity around the nation.

But two programs that have won national titles in this millennium -- something that can't be said for the aforementioned Tigers, Ducks, Horned Frogs and Broncos -- are still breathing, folks. And on Saturday, one can take a serious step up the ladder, when they collide in Baton Rouge.

What does that all mean in Las Vegas, you say? Can Les Miles and the gambling Bayou Bengals stand up to Nick Saban and the rebounding Crimson Tide? Or will the defending national champions steal some of their headlines back?

“Good teams, for sure, but Alabama is the superior team, still, so we stuck them as 7-point favorites,” said Pete Korner of the Sports Club in Las Vegas. “But again, you’re talking about these really tight, really good SEC games, so the home team can definitely win it outright.

“For now, though, we’re going to stick it on a key number, seven, and see where it goes. If it was earlier in the year, it would have been much higher for Alabama.”

Hard to argue, as the Crimson Tide indeed still have that pull in Vegas, don’t they? In fact, it’s hard to find teams that command more respect out in the desert than Alabama does, win or lose. As Jay Kornegay, the executive director of Las Vegas Hilton Sportsbook, told us last week: "They'd be favored over any team in the country. Even now."

But it won't be easy on Saturday, like Korner said. Even though the Tigers may not be as talented as in years past, even though they have received their fair share of breaks to get where they are, it's still a challenge to walk into their house, and walk out with a win.

“And the visitor in this series usually has a tough go of it, that’s for sure, even if they cover in the end,” said John Avello, of the Wynn Hotel Sportsbook, who installed Alabama as a 6-point favorite. “I expect a tight battle.”

And with that, let's take a look at some other marquee games this weekend, and the opening opinion circulating out in Las Vegas:

Georgia Tech (+16) at Virginia Tech

“Virginia Tech, you’re talking about a team that’s been much better over the past five games,” Avello said. “And this is high, but Georgia Tech has had some bad losses and we don’t know what they have left.”

    Korner agrees.

“We don’t like Georgia Tech at all,” he said. “And with it being a marquee game, in the middle of the week, we try to pad it a little bit. We usually give the favorite a little more, and see if the wiseguys take the dog.”

    Minnesota (+23) at Michigan State

“Bad, bad loss to Iowa for Michigan State,” Avello said. “But they get to come back home, and Minnesota is just awful. And I don’t know if Michigan State will suffer so much of a letdown, because they were outplayed so badly against Iowa.”

    Iowa (+18) at Indiana

“Another big favorite in the Big Ten,” Korner said. “And it could go higher. Not much to see here. Indiana, late in the year, will provide no competition. Iowa will roll.”

    Baylor (+7) at Oklahoma State

“Gotta give this team a little bit of respect now. Baylor’s been good,” Avello said. “Oklahoma State, at home, is really going to have to work for this one, and the road team could win it, outright. For Baylor to win at Texas, to beat Kansas State, and I guess they lost to TCU, but who doesn’t? This is a good team, Baylor.”

    Arizona (+8) at Stanford

“Good teams here, but not great teams,” Korner said. “No idea where they will end up in the grand scheme of things, but they’ve had good years, and they can score some points. Should be an entertaining game, but Stanford certainly has enough to clear that number.”

    TCU (-5) at Utah

“Utah is a forgotten team, yes, but they’re an undefeated forgotten team,” Avello said. “They beat TCU two years ago at home, and it’s a tough place to play. This will be a good one.”

    Korner concurs.

“Really good to see some new faces play in big games this late in the year, and it’s great that it’s out west,” he said. “Utah is good, but TCU isn’t giving anything up to anyone. Very, very interesting, and should be a great game for entertainment purposes. TCU, in the end, though, can get this spread easily.”

Middle Tennessee St Blue Raiders at Arkansas St Red Wolves [ESPN | 7:00 PM ET]

Blue Raiders: (-1.5, O/U 58.5) MTSU enters Tuesday’s matchup with just three wins on the season, which is quite a disappointment compared to early season projections. After a four-game suspension of QB, Dwight Dasher, the Blue Raiders have struggled to gain consistency. After putting up over 2700 yards passing last season, Dasher has just 564 in 3 games this season. He’s also been plagued with turnovers since his return, throwing 6 interceptions in those 3 games. With a good chance at the Conference Title, the importance of this game is high for MTSU. They have the luxury of knowing that they have dominated the series of late, covering 8 of their last 10 against Arkansas State, including 2 of their last 3 in Arkansas. In years past, Middle Tennessee has had no problem scoring on the Red Wolves, putting up 24 points or more in 6 of their last 7 contests.

Middle Tennessee is 6-1 SU in its last 7 games when playing Arkansas State.
The total has gone UNDER in 5 of Middle Tennessee's last 7 games on the road.

Key Injuries - OL Mike Williams is out (suspension) for the 1st half.

Projected Score: 31 (OVER – Total of The Day)

Red Wolves: Arkansas State has just three wins this season, but all three of them have come in the Sun Belt Conference. They sit just one game behind Troy in the conference standings. With only four games remaining, a win Tuesday night is especially important in not only the conference race, but the sprint toward bowl eligibility as well. Quarterback, Ryan Aplin is the key to the Red Wolves’ success. He’s already thrown for over 2000 yards this season, and has contributed in the running game with 7 TD’s on the ground. In order to get a win Tuesday night, the Red Wolves will have to vastly improve defensively. Arkansas State has given up 30 points, or more, in each of their five losses. Specifically, they’ll need to limit MTSU QB, Dwight Dasher, who put up 336 total yards in last year’s 38-14 win against Arkansas State. Arkansas State is just 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games against MTSU, but have won 14 of their last 19 home games SU.

Red Wolves are 1-13 SU last 14 games as an Underdog.
The total has gone OVER in 4 of Arkansas State's last 6 games when playing Middle Tennessee.

                Key Injuries - None Reported.

                Projected Score: 34

                Tuesday, November 2

Middle Tennessee St. at Arkansas State (+1.5, 57.5), 7 p.m.

It wasn’t pretty the last time Middle Tennessee showed up on Tuesday night football. Troy hammered the Blue Raiders 42-13 on Oct. 5.

Middle Tennessee (3-4, 2-1 Sun Belt) is expected to perform better this Tuesday, when the Blue Raiders head to Arkansas State (3-5, 3-2 Sun Belt) hoping to stay alive in the conference race.

Blue Raider senior quarterback Dwight Dasher was making his first start of the season in the loss to Troy. Dasher was suspended the first four games of the season after allegedly accepting a $1,500 loan from an Air Force veteran to play poker. Dasher was rusty against Troy and the following week in a loss to Georgia Tech. But the talented dual-threat quarterback, who was the conference’s preseason offensive player of the year, is coming off his best game of the season in a 38-10 win over Louisiana-Monroe.

Dasher threw four touchdown passes in the Blue Raiders’ 38-14 win over Arkansas State last season. Middle Tennessee outgained the Red Wolves 427-220 in the win.

Arkansas State is much more explosive on offense this year. The Red Wolves are coming off a 37-16 whipping of Florida Atlantic. They feature a potent passing attack, led by quarterback Ryan Alpin. The sophomore already has thrown for 2,000 yards with 13 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
Alpin and the offense will need to have a big night to make up for a porous defense. The Red Wolves are ranked 116th in the nation in total defense.

Turnovers, as always, will be a key, and that’s an advantage for the Red Wolves. Middle Tennessee is last in the nation in turnover margin. The Blue Raiders have turned it over 21 times, while collecting only seven turnovers.

The Blue Raiders have won seven straight games in November.

                The line

Middle Tennessee opened as a 1.5-point road favorite. You could find it at -1 at some outlets Monday night, but most books still have the Blue Raiders as 1.5-point favorite.

The Blue Raiders are 6-1 ATS as road favorites under coach Rick Stockstill. The Red Wolves are 8-5 ATS as a home underdog under coach Steve Roberts.

The favorite has covered in the last seven meetings

                The total

The total opened at 57.5 on Monday night and was immediately bet up to 58.5.

Rain is forecast throughout the day in Jonesboro, Ark., with breezy, cool conditions expected at night.

Arkansas State is averaging 28.88 and surrendering 30.38 points per game. Middle Tennessee is averaging 27 and allowing 27 points per game.

The last three meetings between the two teams have averaged 42.6 points.

The under is 21-10-1 in Arkansas State’s last 32 games.

                Injuries

Middle Tennessee senior starting offensive tackle Mike Williams is out for at least the first half of Tuesday’s game, after being ejected from the Louisiana-Monroe game.

Arkansas State is reporting no significant injuries.

Rutgers Scarlet Knights at South Florida Bulls (-10.5, 41.5)

It’s hard to figure out the Big East these days, as two-time defending champion Cincinnati is in the conference basement while perennial doormat Syracuse looks like the biggest challenger to first-place Pittsburgh.

This Rutgers-USF game could still have an impact on the conference race, as Rutgers has a 4-3 overall record and 1-1 mark in the Big East while USF is 4-3 and 1-2 in the conference.

The Scarlet Knights enter Wednesday’s game on a down note, having been blasted 41-21 by Pittsburgh on October 23. But certainly, the Rutgers players’ heads probably weren’t in that one as it came a week after Eric LeGrand, a defensive lineman, became paralyzed from the neck down while making a tackle against Army.

It also didn’t help that leading rusher Mohamed Sanu was dealing with a foot injury and carried just once for one yard, as Pitt outgained the Scarlet Knights 513-203. Sanu is much healthier with the time off.

South Florida enters Wednesday’s game off its best effort of the season - a 38-30 victory over Cincinnati. That was the Bulls’ first win this season over a major Division-I program. The USF offense had five touchdowns after not having scored a single one in the previous two games.

Last year, when these two met in New Jersey, Rutgers won 31-0 in the first regular-season shutout in USF history. Rutgers forced four turnovers, blocked a punt and recorded seven sacks. It was the fourth straight win for Rutgers in the series and it has rushed for more than 100 yards in all four.

                    Line movement
South Florida is a 10.5-point favorite with the total at 41.5. It’s a near 50/50 split on the side lean. The line opened at 9.5 at most books while the total has jumped a half a point at some books. South Florida is 3-4 ATS this year and 2-2 at home, while Rutgers is 1-6 ATS and 0-2 at home.

                    The quarterback story
Rutgers coach Greg Schiano is going to stick with Chas Dodd as the team’s starting quarterback. The true freshman has started the past three games, winning his first two starts. But he was ineffective in a 41-21 loss to Pitt and was pulled late in the game in favor of Tom Savage, the team's former starter and one of the top freshman QBs in the nation last year.

Schiano had said there would be a competition during the team's opening week and Savage had been dealing with some nagging injuries but is now healthy. Dodd, a true freshman, is 58 of 110 for 817 yards with five touchdown passes and three interceptions, while Savage started the first four games this season.

As for Daniels, he had been awful in the previous two games prior to beating Cincinnati. Against the Bearcats he was 13 of 16 for 286 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions and he also rushed for two scores. In the previous two games, Daniels had five interceptions.

In three losses, Daniels has thrown a total of nine interceptions. But in four wins, Daniels has just one total pick. He was held in check last year versus Rutgers and turned the ball over three times.

                    This and that
                    - Rutgers ranks last nationally in sacks allowed per game (4.71) and total sacks allowed (33). The offensive line has allowed 15 sacks in the past two games and Schiano promised some changes. Converted defensive lineman Andre Civil will see his first college snaps, likely at right tackle.

                    - South Florida is tied for ninth nationally in sacks per game.

                    - The over is 4-1 ATS in the past five meetings and the underdog is also 4-1 in the past five. South Florida is just 1-5 ATS in its past six following a victory.

                    - A victory in this one would be the 100th in USF history.

Defensively, South Florida is only allowing 18.6 PPG this year, 20th best in the nation. The Bulls are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 home games against a team with a winning road record. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at Virginia Tech Hokies (-12.5, 56)

Georgia Tech has never lost consecutive games under Paul Johnson and is 5-0 against the spread following a straight-up loss in their coach’s three seasons.

Those streaks will be on the line Thursday, as the up-and-down Yellow Jackets head to Blacksburg for an ACC showdown with red-hot Virginia Tech (6-2, 4-0 ACC).

Since starting out 0-2, including an embarrassing home loss to James Madison, the Hokies have won six straight, covering the spread in each game. But other than a comeback win at North Carolina State on October 2, the quality of competition during the Hokies’ run has been sub-par.

Georgia Tech (5-3, 3-2 ACC) had a bye week to recover from an ugly loss at Clemson on October 23. Yellow Jacket quarterback Joshua Nesbitt was held to only two rushing yards on 15 attempts and completed only 6-of-19 passes for 83 yards with a touchdown and an interception in the loss.

In contrast, Virginia Tech quarterback Tyrod Taylor has been spectacular. During the Hokies’ winning streak, Taylor has thrown 10 touchdowns with only two interceptions. He’s also rushed for more than 100 yards twice and scored three times on the ground.

To make things even more difficult for Georgia Tech, the Hokies have been deadly in November under coach Frank Beamer. Virginia Tech is 19-5 ATS in November since 2004.

                      The line
Virginia Tech opened as 14.5-point favorite, but the number was down to 12.5 as of Wednesday afternoon.

The Hokies are on a 38-15 ATS run in their last 53 conference games and 17-5 ATS in their last 22 Thursday games.

Georgia Tech covered as a 3.5-point home dog in last season’s 28-23 win over the Hokies.

                      The total
The total opened at 56 points and had seen no movement as of Wednesday afternoon.

Rain is forecast throughout Wednesday and Thursday, but is expected to clear off before kickoff, leaving cool temperatures.

Georgia Tech is averaging 29.50 and allowing 23.63 points per game. Virginia Tech is averaging 37 and allowing 20 points per game.

The teams have combined to average 48.2 points in their last five meetings.

                      Injuries
Both teams enter the game relatively healthy.

Virginia Tech starting free safety Eddie Whitley (foot) missed the Duke game, but is expected to return.

Georgia Tech backup running back Marcus Wright has missed the last two games due to injuries suffered in a scooter accident. He’s listed as questionable, but is not a major contributor to the Yellow Jackets’ offense.

Georgia Tech’s ground game vs. Virginia Tech’s run defense

The Yellow Jackets lead the nation in rushing, averaging 317 yards per game. They rushed for 368 yards in last season’s win over Virginia Tech.

The Hokies are in the middle of the pack when it comes to stopping the run. They are allowing 145 yards per game.

                      Special teams
The Hokies are known for the special teams’ prowess. They’re averaging 16 yards on punt returns, ninth most in the nation.

Georgia Tech, on the other hand, has struggled mightily on special teams this season. They’re averaging a measly 31 yards per punt.

BULLS: Buffalo has had a really tough year, as they are 2-6 SU and ATS this season. The Bulls have failed to score more than 14 PTS in their last 3 games, and are only averaging 14.9 PPG for the season. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at Virginia Tech Hokies [ESPN | 7:45 PM ET]

YELLOW JACKETS: Georgia Tech is coming off their bye week, as they've had plenty of time to think about their last game, a 13-27 loss at Clemson. The Yellow Jackets are 5-3 SU this season, including 3-5 ATS. Georgia Tech is only 1-3 ATS on the road this year. Georgia Tech will be playing their 3rd game as the listed underdog tonight, as they are 1-1 both SU and ATS in this scenario. The Yellow Jackets have the most prolific rushing attack in the nation this year, averaging 317.4 rushing YPG this season. RB Anthony Allen and QB Josh Nesbitt have each rushed for more than 650 YDS this season, combining for 13 TD's on the ground alone. Nesbitt has also thrown for more than 650 YDS, including 7 TD's. Key Injuries - WR Quentin Sims (undisclosed) is questionable.

                        Projected Score: 17

HOKIES: (-13, O/U 56) Everything is looking up for Virginia Tech, as they are coming off a bye and are playing in their lovable Thursday night confines at home. The Hokies have won their last 6 games, both SU and ATS since starting the season 0-2. Virginia Tech is undefeated in league play, and easily looks like one of the 15 best teams in the nation. Virginia Tech is getting it done offensively, as they have the 14th best scoring offense in the nation at 37 PPG. Only twice this season have the Hokies been held under 30 PTS. QB Tyrod Taylor has been an amazing leader for the Hokies, as he leads the ACC with a 171.1 passer rating while throwing for 1,602 yards with 15 touchdowns against 3 INT's this year. Taylor also has more than 500 rushing YDS, most of which have come on broken plays where he's turned nothing into something. Defensively, the Hokies are only allowing 20 PPG this season. Central Florida Knights at Houston Cougars [ESPN | 8:00 PM ET]

KNIGHTS: (-2, O/U 61.5) Central Florida might be one of the best teams you know nothing about, as they are an impressive 6-2 SU this year. The Knights don't play like a mid major, as they are a physical group that plays demanding defense and wears you down as the game progresses. Even in defeat, the Knights play tough as they've lost both games by a combined total of 11 points. UCF is 4-0 SU in league play this year, as they control their own destiny. Defensively, only 2 teams have scored more than 17 PTS against the Knights. Even after allowing 35 PTS to East Carolina in their last game, they are 11th in the nation in allowing just 16.5 PPG this season. RB Ronnie Weaver has rushed for 638 YDS and 10 TD's this season for the Knights. UCF has scored at least 35 PTS in each of their psat 4 games, and will look to keep that going against Houston tonight. The Knights are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games as the listed favorite. COUGARS: Houston has recovered quite well from the loss of QB Case Keenum, as they performed very well of late to stay right in the thick of the C-USA conference race. Houston is 5-3 SU this season, including 4-1 SU in conference play this year. Houston has revenge on their minds tonight, as they lost 32-37 SU last year to Central Florida. The Cougars have scored a combined 101 PTS over their past 2 games, both SU and ATS wins. Houston is 3-1 SU at home this year, and haven't played there in nearly a month thanks to 3 straight road contests. Western Michigan Broncos at Central Michigan Chippewas (-3.5, 51.5)

                              Why Western Michigan will cover
Despite the fact that they have only had one win in their last three games, the Broncos seem to be rounding into form. One of those defeats was on the road at South Bend, while the other one was decided by just a single touchdown last week against Northern Illinois, the top team in the MAC West.

Central Michigan has won the last four contests in this series, but remember that was with Dan LeFevour at quarterback and coach Butch Jones on the sidelines (LeFevour was injured in 2008 and Jones was only coach in the last three, for those of you fact checkers paying attention). The drop off from losing those two staples is apparent with CMU having a horrible 2-7 season.

Also with the line at -3.5, the betting community is expecting a close game, that will surely add stress to CMU backers as the Chippewas have an abysmal 40 percent field-goal percentage

                              Why Central Michigan will cover
Last month wasn’t pretty for the Chippewas or their backers. Central Michigan went 0-5 in October and failed to cover the spread in each one of those games. With that said, they have everything to gain and nothing to lose with this instate rivalry. Weird results can pop up when motivation is its peak.

It’s Senior Day with the WMU game serving as the last home game of the season. Leading that charge will be Nick Bellore. The senior linebacker goes into his final game in front of his classmates and friends with 451 career tackles, which is the most of any active player in the FBS.

Home-field advantage will be a key factor with the home side winning 16 of the last 20 games in this rivalry.

Central Florida Knights at Houston Cougars (+1.5, 61.5)

                              Why Central Florida will cover
There isn’t a better cover team in the nation than Central Florida. In spite of its overall and ATS record, UCF still remains one of the most underrated teams in the nation. The Knights’ two losses were to North Carolina State and Kansas State, both decent BCS teams, and they have been dominating Conference USA foes, outscoring them 167-70,

Central Florida’s ninth-ranked defense is huge part of that success and it will surely be up to the challenge of going against a Houston Cougar offense that is averaging 41.6 points per game. The toughest defense that Houston has faced this season was Mississippi State, which ranks a couple notches below UCF at 34.

The Knights will also look to attack the Cougars on offense with the run game. Houston is giving up 194.2 yards on the ground which ranks 98th in the nation.

                              Why Houston will cover
The Cougars finally come home after a tough three-game road stretch, where they almost went undefeated. They only lost by three to Rice and then went on to blowout SMU and Memphis.

The team has been through a lot this season, losing both their top two quarterbacks for the season. However, freshman David Piland has come in for the rescue and has adjusted to the offense. The Southlake Carroll alum (powerhouse Texas H.S. that produced Greg McElroy and Chase Daniel) is coming off one of the best performance of his short career, throwing for 292 yards and five touchdowns against Memphis

And as is always the case in nationally televised in-conference matchups, home advantage will be key. This is a team that is finally clicking and will be out to avenge last year’s 37-32 loss to UCF.
