NCAAF Opening Line Report: Week 7

When the press conference started in Columbus, Ohio, Alabama was already losing, 21-3. The notion that Ohio State – fresh off a 38-10 whipping of Indiana at home – could slip up to be the No. 1 team in the country as a result of its perfect record, and the Crimson Tide’s stunning loss, was quite strong.

But that made no difference to Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel. He didn’t care on Saturday, where the Buckeyes were ranked, which was No. 2. Just as he didn’t much care on Sunday that Ohio State did creep up to No. 1.

For Tressel, it’s all about the next game, the next opponent. So many coaches these days talk in clichés. Tressel actually lives in them.

“The only number I’m concerned with is the one on the far right moving up by one.”

That was Tressel’s comment after the win over the Hoosiers, his 100th on the Buckeyes’ sideline. The school awarded him a trophy with the digits 1-0-0 on it, and all he wanted to talk about, was making that number 101 next week.

But that won’t be easy. Ohio State now must play at Wisconsin, in what might be its toughest test of the season.

So, in knowing that Ohio State is now the top dog, and knowing that Tressel won’t change his strategy all that much this week one way or the other, just how are the oddsmakers feeling about this team, with such a difficult opponent on deck?

“Lot of opinion on this one, no question,” said Pete Korner, of the Sports Club in Las Vegas. “Ohio State is No. 1 now, and it’ll be a heavily bet game, but we just didn’t want to go to that big number of seven. We wanted to keep it away from a full touchdown, and see what the public does with it.”

But when a team does to move to No. 1, does the public jump on it, or does it expect a letdown?

“It all depends,” Korner said. “It’ll be a fun game to watch, and Wisconsin can definitely win this one outright, no question. Let’s just see what the pros do out here in Vegas early in the week. They will help give us an indication.”

And with that, let’s take a look at some other games this week, and what the opening opinion is out in Las Vegas:

South Florida (+10.5) at West Virginia

“We’re unimpressed with South Florida, so we jacked up West Virginia a bit,” Korner said. “South Florida made some strides a few years ago, and really looked like a player in the Big East. But they are not what they were. We look at it this way: It’s a marquee game for West Virginia, at night, at home. They’ll be ready. This line is only going to go up.”

    Mississippi State (+12) at Florida

“I’ve liked Florida the last two weeks, and I’ve been wrong,” Korner said. “My power rating on them is a little out of whack. But this is a tough spot for Mississippi State to come in with. Florida, with two straight losses, will be ready to go. We were a little mixed on the number, but this is definitely a double-digit game.”

    Illinois (+9.5) at Michigan State

“Michigan State is really showing they can be a good team,” Korner said. “That said, we expect some Illinois money here, and I think that’ll be a good play. Illinois can hang around in this game.”

    South Carolina (-5) at Kentucky

“Remember, this is college, where there are so few games played, it is almost impossible to have a letdown,” Korner said. “South Carolina will realize how important a good effort will be here, and honestly, I don’t think they’re that much stronger than Kentucky. But they are better, so we stuck it at five, and we’ll wait to see what the early moves are. Let’s just see if the public expects a letdown here from South Carolina.”

    Arkansas (+1.5) at Auburn

“This is bound to be one of those real tight, SEC matchups,” Korner said. “Arkansas may be slightly better in terms of power ratings, but let’s face it: it’s a toss-up overall. We’ll give Auburn a slight nod because of the home field.”

    Ole Miss (+20) at Alabama

“One thing Alabama has to know, has to stress this week, is that in the past, so many other teams dropped as the season went on,” Korner said. “And there’s lot of season left for that to happen this year. You can bounce back in college football these days. I expect that here with Alabama, and it starts vs. Ole Miss. We left it at 20. We think Alabama will be ready.”

    Texas (+9) at Nebraska

“The public is betting Nebraska this year, every week,” Korner said. “Win or lose the week before, it doesn’t matter. So, we have to take that into account. We left it at nine for Nebraska. But there was some discussion. We definitely wanted it over a touchdown.”

    Iowa (-2.5) at Michigan

“This was a tough one,” Korner said. “We all have respect for Iowa, and that’s what won out here. As strange as it may seem for Michigan to be an underdog at home, we put it at 2.5 to start. Who knows, the bettors may not allow that one to happen, they may jump on Michigan and change the line around. For now, we really like Iowa, and that, to me, is a good line.”

What bettors need to know: UCF at Marshall
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Central Florida Knights at Marshall Thundering Herd (+5.5, 44.5)

It’s the second straight Wednesday of Conference USA action featuring UCF. This time, the Knights are on the road as they look for their eighth conference victory in a row.

              Line Movement

The side has dropped a point from its opening of 6.5 at most books while the total has dropped a half a point at most books. Approximately 60 percent of the lean is on Central Florida. The Knights are 4-1 ATS this season while Marshall is 1-4, with the lone cover coming against West Virginia.

              The series

UCF leads the all-time series, 5-3, and has won the past five. Last year in Orlando, the Knights won 21-20, scoring twice in the final eight minutes to overcome a 20-7 deficit.

This year’s Knights enter off an impressive 42-7 win over UAB. Sophomore safety Kemal Ishmael was a one-man wrecking crew for UCF and was named C-USA Defensive Player of the Week. He made seven tackles, grabbed an interception and forced a fumble that was returned for a touchdown to lead a dominant UCF defense. That unit is ranked second nationally in passing efficiency, fifth in pass defense, eighth in scoring defense and ninth in total defense.

Central Florida has played N.C. State and Kansas State and could have won both games. Only UCF and Cal have defenses ranked in the Top 10 in all four of those categories. The Knights have allowed opponents just eight trips to the red zone in five games, only topped by TCU’s seven in six games.

Marshall enters off a disappointing effort in a 41-16 loss at Southern Miss on October 2. The Herd offense was inept with just 180 total yards. On the positive side, Marshall defensive end Vinny Curry had two more sacks to give him eight in five games. He ranks No. 1 in the FBS in sacks, No. 2 in tackles for loss with 11.5 and 16th with 50 total tackles. Curry also has two forced fumbles and three quarterback hurries.

              The offenses

This is a home game so it should mean a good night for Marshall QB Brian Anderson. Overall, he has completed 85-of-147 passes for 880 yards and eight touchdowns against five interceptions.

In two home games, he is 41-of-59 for 524 yards and six touchdowns with no interceptions. But the Herd are second-to-last in C-USA in rushing and 105th in the nation (101 yards per game). They managed just 52 yards on the ground against Southern Miss.

“We have to become a more balanced offense,” first-year head coach Doc Holliday said to reporters. “It comes down to blocking and we've got to do a better job of doing that.”

The Knights are very good on the ground but not so much in the air. The team rotates QBs, with freshman Jeffrey Godfrey getting most of the time. Rob Calabrese often comes in on a Wildcat-type formation.

Last week Godfrey rushed for 80 yards (he leads the team in rushing) while Calabrese rushed for 40 yards. It was the first time in UCF history that two quarterbacks finished with 40 rushing yards or more in the same game. The Knights have four players with at least 100 yards rushing. Both QBs are completing better than 64 percent of their passes but UCF is 100th in the nation in passing yards per game (169.4).

              This and that

Central Florida coach George O’Leary said backup kicker Jamie Boyle will likely handle field goals at Marshall as starter Nick Cattoi has struggled this season. Cattoi has hit only four of his eight field goal attempts this season. He has missed all three attempts from 40-49 yards, including a 44-yard attempt against UAB.

Marshall is 6-2 all-time playing on Wednesday nights. The Herd are 121-20 overall at Joan C. Edwards Stadium for a winning percentage of .858. That’s the best in Division I for any team in its current stadium.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Central Florida Knights at Marshall Thundering Herd [ESPN | 8:00 PM ET]

KNIGHTS: (-5.5, O/U 44.5) Central Florida played their best game last week, a complete 42-7 SU beatdown of UAB. The Knights are 3-2 SU and 4-1 ATS overall this year. The biggest reason for their success is their defense, as they've held their past 3 opponents to 17 PTS or fewer. The Knights are only allowing 13.8 PPG, 8th best in the nation. Heading into the brunt of their conference schedule, it can be assumed that this defense is only going to get even stronger. UCF has a potent rushing attack, as they average nearly 200 YPG on the ground, 32nd in the nation. For UCF to continue to be one of the best mid-majors in the country, they will have to better in the passing game. The Knights are only averaging 170 YPG through the air, 100th best in the country. UCF can win back to back games SU for the first time this season tonight. The Knights are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 conference games. The Knights are 6-0 ATS against a team with a losing record. UCF is 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games following a bye week.

Knights are 9-1 ATS last 10 road games.
Under is 8-3 last 11 games following a SU win.

Key Injuries - WR A.J. Guyton (knee) is probable.

Projected Score: 23 (UNDER-Total of the Day)

THUNDERING HERD: Marshall is flat out struggling this year, as the are 1-4 both SU and ATS this season. Marshall was pummeled last week by Southern Mississippi, and the going doesn't get any easier this week. The Thundering Herd face a very stout team in UCF tonight. Marshall has lost the past 5 meetings against UCF, so revenge would certainly be sweet tonight at home. Because this game is at home, one would think Marshall will be ready to play with the type of effort they showed against WVA earlier this season. The Herd are struggling to score this season, as they are only averaging 19.2 PPG, 100th best in the nation. Surprisingly, the Herd are struggling run the football, as they don't have a player with more than 250 YDS rushing this season. Marshall's defense might be the most disappointing aspect of their season, as they are allowing opponents to average 35.4 PPG. The only thing working in the Herd's favor tonight is the fact they've had extra time to prepare for this league contest. Marshall has had 3 more days to prepare for tonight than UCF has. The Thundering Herd are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 games after scoring less than 20 points in their previous game. Marshall is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a SU loss of more than 20 points.

Thundering Herd are 12-4 ATS last 16 games as a home underdog.
Under is 11-2 last 13 games after allowing more than 40 points in their previous game.

Key Injuries - DT Johnny Jones (knee) is questionable.

                Projected Score: 17

                    What bettors need to know
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kansas State Wildcats at Kansas Jayhawks (+2.5, 50.5)

                    The skinny

Kansas State (4-1, 1-1) has a chance to save face after getting embarrassed at home by Nebraska last week on Thursday night football. The Cornhuskers exposed a very suspect Wildcat rush defense and stymied what had been a successful Kansas State ground game, led by running back Daniel Thomas.

The Wildcats are ranked 116th in the nation in run defense, after surrendering 451 yards rushing in a 48-13 loss to the Huskers.

The Jayhawks (2-3, 0-1) also got blasted the last time they stepped on the field. Baylor blew out Kansas 55-7 in coach Turner Gill’s Big 12 debut back on Oct. 2. So Gill had a few more days to see if he can fix a host of problems for the Jayhawks, who rank 11th or 12th in the Big 12 in eight major statistical categories.

Kansas opened the season with a 6-3 loss to North Dakota State of the FCS.

                    The line

Kansas State opened as a 3.5-point favorite. The line was bet down to -3 almost instantly and was down to -2.5 at most outlets as of Wednesday afternoon.

The home team is 6-1 ATS in the last six meeting between the Jayhawks and Wildcats. The favorite has covered the spread in seven of the last 10.

Kansas State covered as 2.5-point home underdogs in a 17-10 win over the Jayhawks last season.

                    The total

The opening 50.5 total had not budged as of Wednesday.

The Jayhawks are scoring 19.2 and allowing 26.6 points per game. The Wildcats are scoring 27.20 and allowing 25.4 points per game.

Weather is not expected to be a factor.

                    Injuries

Kansas State will be without leading receiver Brodrick Smith (leg).

Kansas will be without starting offensive lineman Trevor Marrongelli (knee surgery). Starting senior safety Phillip Strozier is listed as doubtful.

South Florida Bulls at West Virginia Mountaineers (-10, 43)

                    The skinny

West Virginia heads into Big East play at 4-1, with its only loss coming at No. 9 LSU. The Mountaineers are seventh in total defense and have been especially stingy against the run, allowing just 86.8 yards on the ground. The offense, led by the explosive Noel Devine and improving quarterback Gino Smith, has been extremely balanced.

West Virginia is coming off its best performance of the season in a 49-10 rout of UNLV.

In contrast, South Florida (3-2, 0-1) is coming off its worst performance in an ugly 13-9 home loss to Syracuse. Sophomore quarterback B.J. Daniels has struggled in the passing game. He’s thrown four touchdowns with seven interceptions.

South Florida’s wins have come against Stony Brook, Western Kentucky and Florida Atlantic.

                    The line

West Virginia opened as an 11.5-point favorite. The line was down to -10.5 at most outlets as of Wednesday.

The Bulls have covered the spread in only six of their last 21 games against teams with a winning record.

South Florida has upset West Virginia in three of their last four meetings, including a 30-19 home win last season.

                    The total

The total opened up at 43 and remained there as of Wednesday afternoon.

A 50 percent chance of rain is in the forecast with temperatures expected to be in the low 50s.

West Virginia is scoring 29.8 and allowing 13.60 points per game. South Florida is scoring 27.4 and allowing 16 points per game.

As the total suggests, this has historically been a low-scoring Big East matchup. The five games between the teams have averaged just 37 points.

                    Injuries

West Virginia’s starting cornerback Brandon Hogan (bicep) is questionable.

South Florida has five starters listed on its injury report. Defensive back Mistral Raymond and wide receiver Sterling Griffin are probable. Offensive lineman Jamar Bass, wide receiver A.J. Love and defensive back Jerrell Young are questionable.

Kansas St. Wildcats at Kansas Jayhawks [7:30 PM ET]

WILDCATS: (-3, O/U 50.5) Kansas St. was undefeated until they met up with Nebraska. One blowout loss later, and one can only imagine the fragile mentality of this team. Coach Snyder has plenty of experience, so one would imagine his team will respond strongly to their blowout loss. Playing a state rival is never easy, but the Wildcats are far more disciplined and consistent to overlook this matchup. Kansas St. is 4-1 SU and 2-3 ATS overall this year. This Wildcats team will have to be disciplined tonight, as they are playing their first true road game of the season. The Wildcats are 2-1 ATS as a single digit favorite this year. RB Daniel Thomas is the star of this team, as he's one of the elite runners in all of college. Thomas has rushed for nearly 700 YDS this season, including 6 TD's. Thomas should have far more running lanes against Kansas compared to what he faced against Nebraska. Prior to allowing Nebraska to score 48 PTS, the Wildcats hadn't allowed an opponent to score more than 24 PTS. The Wildcats are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a SU loss. Kansas St. is 6-2 ATS in their last 8 conference games. The Wildcats are 1-9 ATS in their last 10 games as a road favorite.

Wildcats are 2-7 ATS last 9 games following a double-digit loss at home.
Over is 19-7 last 26 games following a SU loss.

Key Injuries - WR Brodrick Smith (leg) is questionable.

Projected Score: 24 (UNDER-Total of the Day)

JAYHAWKS: Kansas is coming off one of their worst performances of the season, a 7-55 SU demoralizing loss to Baylor. The Jayhawks might be one of the most inconsistent teams in the country, as one game they look like world beaters and the next game they look like one of the worst teams in the nation. Kansas is 2-3 both SU and ATS this season. The Jayhawks have won 2 of their 3 home games this season SU, with their lone loss coming against FCS competition. Kansas has revenge on their minds, as they lost 10-17 SU last year to the Wildcats. Kansas has only scored 20 PTS or more twice this season, and are only averaging 19.2 PPG overall this year. Freshman RB James Sims has been a solid surprise this year, as he's rushed for a teak high 329 YDS this year, including 3 TD's. Defensively, Kansas is allowing 26.2 PPG this season. The Jayhawks have had extra time to prepare for this game tonight, as they last played on October 2nd. The Jayhawks are 10-4 ATS in their last 14 games after scoring less than 20 points in their previous game. Kansas is 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games as a home underdog. The Jayhawks are 1-8 ATS in their last 9 conference games. Kansas is 0-6 ATS in their last 6 games in October.

Jayhawks are 8-3 ATS last 11 games following a bye week.
Over is 5-0 last 5 home games against a team with a winning road record.

Key Injuries - TE A.J. Steward (shoulder) is probable.

                      Projected Score: 21

South Florida Bulls at West Virginia Mountaineers [ESPN | 7:45 PM ET]

BULLS: South Florida might have 3 wins this season, but one could argue that none of them came against top 100 teams. Coach Holtz is seeing how difficult it can be to coach at a BCS school. USF has a ton of pride though, and they will get on track sooner rather than later. South Florida is 3-2 SU and 2-3 ATS overall this season. The Bulls are looking to bounce back from their conference opener home loss to Syracuse, where they only scored 9 PTS. This Bulls offense has been troublesome, as they have been very 1 dimensional. This team has absolutely no passing game, so everything they do comes via the ground. South Florida averages 176.2 rushing YPG this season, 43rd in the nation. RB Moise Plancher is the team leader in rushing, with 289 YDS and 4 TD's this year. QB B.J. Daniels has struggled this year, throwing for only 684 YDS with 4 TD's and 7 INT's. Besides giving up 38 PTS to Florida, no other team has scored more than 14 PTS against South Florida. Overall, this Bulls defense is only allowing 16 PPG, 19th best in the country. The Bulls are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games as an underdog greater than 10 points. The Bulls are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 conference games. South Florida is 0-5 ATS in their last 5 Thursday games.

Bulls are 6-15 ATS against a team with a winning record.
Over is 5-1 last 6 games after scoring less than 20 points in their previous game.

Key Injuries - WR Sterling Griffin (ankle) is probable.

                      Projected Score: 13

MOUNTAINEERS: (-10.5, O/U 43) West Virginia is back in the national rankings at #25 in the nation. The Mountaineers are 4-1 SU and 3-2 ATS overall this season. West Virginia enters tonight's contest with revenge on their minds, as they've lost 4 of the past 5 games played against South Florida. Clearly USF is in the heads of the Mountaineers, so it will be interesting to see how they respond to the challenge at hand tonight. The Mountaineers are throwing the ball more than ever this year, behind stud QB Geno Smith. Smith is 2nd in the Big East passer rating, thanks to 1,139 passing YDS and 12 TD's this year. Smith directs an offense that is averaging 29.8 PPG this season. West Virginia has a stifling defense this year, especially against the run. The Mountaineers are only allowing 13.6 PPG this season, 7th best in the nation. Of the 3 home gamest this year, nobody has stayed within 14 PTS of the Mountaineers. The Mountaineers are 5-0 ATS against a team with a winning record. West Virginia is 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games as a favorite. The Mountaineers are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games as a home favorite more than 10 points.

Mountaineers are 3-13 ATS last 16 games following a SU win of more than 20 points.
Over is 7-2 last 9 Thursday games.

Key Injuries - DB Brandon Hogan (bicep) is probable.

Projected Score: 31 (SIDE of the Day)

                          What bettors need to know
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cincinnati Bearcats at Louisville Cardinals (+2.5, 58)

What would you do with a keg of nails? It’s a weird question, but that is what the football programs at Cincinnati and Louisville have been playing for since 1929. Both teams seem to be hitting their stride in what shapes up to be a interesting matchup on Friday night.

                          Silent Mike

Search in "Mike Bajakian" in Google News and you won't find anything, but he was the secret weapon behind the success of Dan LeFevour at CMU. Butch Kelly brought him to Cincinnati and he has helped foster the growth of Zach Collaros as QB1, with the junior throwing for nine touchdowns in the last three games. His most impressive display was a 305-yard, three-touchdown performance against Oklahoma.

                          Surprise rush

Defensive minded Charlie Strong will be expecting a high paced offensive attack, but Bajakian may actually mimic the same gameplan that Oregon State incorporated in their 35-28 win over Louisville. In that game, the Beavers relied more on the run. The Cardinals rank 58th defensively against the rush but it could be much worse as they have struggled against the only two quality teams on their schedule: Oregon State and Kentucky.

                          Suspect secondary

The Cardinals will counter on offense by attacking the Bearcats secondary, which ranks 111th in the nation in yards allowed. In their losses to Fresno State, North Carolina State and Oklahoma, Cincinnati gave up an average of 316 yards and three scores. Louisville's senior quarterback Adam Froman is making the most of his final year, having thrown for seven touchdowns in his last two games.

                          Why Cincinnati will cover

The Bearcats have been an entirely different team since running back Isaiah Pead has come back from injury, rushing for 169 yards in their near upset over Oklahoma. The junior followed that up with a 197-yard performance against Miami (Ohio) last week, and on only 10 carries.

"We need to, for one, keep the Keg. That's our mentality right now. Keep the Keg and start taking the steps toward this third championship,” Pead told reporters.

                          Why Louisville will cover

Rookie coach Charlie Strong has this program on the right path and seems to have the senior leadership on his team to pull off a home upset. The Cardinals played well in their loss to Oregon State and are currently riding a two-game winning streak. The 56-0 blowout over Memphis last week should also give this team a boost in confidence.

                          Notes and trends

The line opened at -3.5 in favor of Cincinnati and has since dropped to -2.5 at most books. Both teams are coming into the game on ATS win streaks with Louisville riding a three-game ATS streak and the Bearcats covering the spread in their last two games.

Books seem fairly confident with the total. It has remained steady at 58 for most of the week. The under has hit in three of the last four games in this Big East series.

Clear skies and a low of 40 degrees are expected by kickoff with NW winds going at about 10 mph in Louisville.

                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

State Buckeyes at Wisconsin Badgers (+3.5, 49)

Top-ranked Ohio State (6-0, 2-0) invades No. 16 Wisconsin (5-1, 1-1) to face the Badgers at Camp Randall Stadium on Saturday.

                            Big bucks

Ohio State won't get to enjoy its No. 1 ranking for long.

The Buckeyes, ranked No. 1 for the first time since December 2, 2007, are 66-11-1 all-time as a No. 1 team.

They are 15-3 as a No. 1 under head coach Jim Tressel, all since 2006. Two of the losses, of course, are in national championship games.

When asked about carrying the No.1 ranking Tressel said, "We believe there is a permanent bull's eye."

                            Mad-town

For just the ninth time in school history and the first time since 1997, Wisconsin will host the No.1 team in the country.

The Badgers are 3-4 all-time against No.1 teams at Camp Randall Stadium. Their last win over a No. 1 team was a 21-14 victory over Michigan in 1981.

Since the start of the 2004 season, when head coach Brett Bielema joined the UW coaching staff as defensive coordinator, the Badgers have compiled a 40-4 record at Camp Randall Stadium. That is the best record in the Big Ten over that span (Ohio State is 40-5) and tied for third-best n the country.

The popular college football preview show, ESPN College Gameday, will broadcast live from Madison on Saturday morning.

So, is there an upset in the making at Camp Randall Stadium?

The elements are in place. At night. National television. Revenge in the air. Wisconsin has won 25 of its last 28 night games.

"What more do you need?" said offensive coordinator Paul Chryst. "You've got Ohio State coming in. Who gives a [bleep] about last year?"

                            Fuggedaboudit

Speaking about last year, Badger quarterback Scott Tolzien and his offense dominated OSU last season, out-gaining the Buckeyes 368-184 and making 22 first downs to eight for Ohio State. The Buckeyes got two interceptions for touchdowns and a kick return for a touchdown, rendering that domination moot in the disturbing loss.

Wisconsin is 15-4 with Tolzein at quarterback, averaging 33.5 points and 427 yards of total offense.

When asked if he thought Tolzien had taken anything away from last year’s debacle, Bielema answered, "I think so. I think he probably learned how to handle that situation. It’s one thing if the first one happened, but don’t let it affect you in a way where you got to learn to make sure the second one doesn’t happen, and vice versa.

"During the course of the game, it’s not what happens, it’s how you react to what happens. And he learned himself how to kind of turn those situations from negatives to positives."

                            New York City calling

Ohio State QB Terrelle Pryor is a leading candidate in the Heisman race this season.

Pryor passed for a career-high 334 yards, completing 24 passes with three touchdowns, in last week’s win over Indiana. It marked the first 300-yard passing game for an OSU quarterback since Troy Smith in the 2006 Michigan game.

Pryor, 25-3 as a starter with the Buckeyes, now has six 300-yard total offense games at Ohio State, tied atop the all-time leaderboard in OSU history.

                            Taking care of business

The Badgers have not turned the ball over since the third quarter of the San Jose State game, a span of four-plus games. A turnover-free streak that long has not happened in the same season since 1988. Wisconsin is 31-5 under Bielema in games with an even or positive turnover margin.

In addition, Wisconsin has committed just 20 penalties, tied for the fewest in the country.

Behind Tolzein, running backs John Clay and James White, tight end Lance Kendricks and receiver Nick Toon, Wisconsin’s offense has been very effective. It has gone four games without a turnover and has produced 20 touchdowns in its last 22 trips inside the red zone.

                            Here’s the beef

Wisconsin's starting offensive line averages taller than 6-foot-5, 320 pounds and the members of the front five have combined to start 110 games in their careers. Three of the five are on major award watch lists.

Thanks to the "Thick red line," Tolzien's career completion percentage of almost 66 percent is tops in school history and third-best among active QBs in the country with at least 20 games played (trailing only Houston's Case Keenum and Boise State's Kellen Moore).

                            By the numbers

                            • The series between the Buckeyes and the Badgers, which dates back to 1913, shows Ohio State with a 53-17-5 lead.

                            • OSU is 24-10-2 in Madison, 8-5-1 over the last 14 meetings and has captured the last three contests between the schools.

                            • The last three games in Madison have been decided by a total of 15 points, where Ohio State has averaged 13 PPG.

                            • The Buckeyes have won 39 of their last 43 Big Ten games and have won their last eight conference road games against AP Top 25 opponents.

                            • Ohio State is 19-1 SU and 15-4-1 ATS in its last 20 games on the conference road, with 16 of the wins by double-digit margins.

                            • OSU is 22-1 in games in which Pryor throws at least one touchdown pass.

                            • The Badgers are 40-4 at home since 2004 and have won 25 of the last 28 night games.

                            • Last Wisconsin win over a No. 1 ranked team was in 1981.

Texas Longhorns at Nebraska Cornhuskers [ABC | 3:30 PM ET]

LONGHORNS: Texas is reeling, as they've lost consecutive games and are out of the national polls for the first time since 2000. Texas is 3-2 SU and 1-4 ATS overall this season. Texas will be the biggest underdog they've been in quite some time, and they are looking to avoid losing 3 games in a row for the first time since 1997. The Longhorns are really struggling on offense, as they have the 79th best scoring offense at 24.8 PPG. QB Garrett Gilbert is having a tough time grasping this offense, forcing the Longhorns to be more one dimensional than they'd like. Gilbert has thrown for 1,150 YDS this season with 4 TD's, but he also has 5 turnovers. Texas is coming off their bye, so it's quite likely that Coach Brown has some tricks up his sleeve. After all, Texas and Brown have been dominant in the game following Oklahoma week. Defensively, Texas needs focus on stopping the run and making tackles at the point of impact. The Longhorns are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following an ATS loss. Texas is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games on fieldturf. The Longhorns are 1-6 ATS against a team with a winning record.

Longhorns are 5-2 ATS last 7 games as a road underdog.
Over is 4-0 last 4 games following a SU loss.

Key Injuries - WR Mike Davis (knee) is questionable.

                              Projected Score: 13

CORNHUSKERS: (-9.5, O/U 46.5) Nebraska has waited what seems like forever to get another chance at Texas. The Cornhuskers are ranked 5th in the country, their best ranking since 2001. Nebraska has lost 8 of the past 9 meetings SU with Texas, and Nebraska is confident that today will be different. The Cornhuskers are led by freshman QB Taylor Martinez. Martinez has 1,400 total yards combined and 15 TD's overall this season. Martinez has been a huge surprise to the Cornhuskers, and has made this team a legit national championship contender. Against FBS teams, Nebraska has scored at least 38 PTS in every game this year. Defensively, Nebraska is every bit as good as they were last year. The Cornhuskers have only allowed one team to score more than 17 PTS against them. For the season, Nebraska is allowing 12.8 PPG, the 5th fewest in the nation. The Cornhuskers are 10-4 ATS against a team with a winning record. Nebraska is 16-35 ATS in their last 51 games after scoring more than 40 points in their previous game.

Cornhuskers are 19-3-1 ATS last 23 home games against a team with a winning road record.
Under is 14-3 last 17 games in October.

Key Injuries - LB Will Compton (foot) is questionable.

Projected Score: 31 (SIDE of the Day)

Ohio St. Buckeyes at Wisconsin Badgers [ESPN | 7:00 PM ET]

BUCKEYES: (-4, O/U 49) Ohio St. is likely playing their toughest game of the season to date today. Anyone looking at betting on Ohio St. must realize that this line has come down from -6 down to -3.5. The Buckeyes are the #1 team in the nation, thanks to a perfect 6-0 SU record. Almost as impressive as their 6-0 SU record is their 5-1 ATS record. the Buckeyes have handled Wisconsin the past 3 years, so the Badgers will be excited for some revenge. QB Terrelle Pryor is a leading Heisman Trophy contender, as he is the leader of this championship caliber team. Pryor has accounted for more than 1,700 total YDS this season through the air and on the ground this year, in addition to 18 TD's. Ohio St. has a very well balanced offense, ranking in the top 40 in both passing and rushing yards this year. Overall, the Buckeyes are averaging 43.2 PPG while allowing only 13.5 PPG. Defensively, Ohio St. has only allowed 2 teams to score more than 13 PTS against them. Today will mark only the 2nd time this season the Buckeyes will be a single digit favorite. The Buckeyes are 8-1 ATS in their last 9 games following a SU win of more than 20 points. Ohio St. is 13-3 ATS in their last 16 games following an ATS win. The Buckeyes are 19-7 ATS in their last 26 games as a road favorite. Ohio St. is 29-11 ATS in their last 40 conference games.

Buckeyes are 23-4 ATS last 27 road games against a team with a winning home record.
Under is 7-0-1 last 8 road games.

Key Injuries - TE Jake Stoneburner (ankle) is probable.

Projected Score: 31 (OVER-Total of the Day)

BADGERS: Wisconsin has won 40 of their last 44 games SU at home, a trend they hope continues when they face the number 1 team in the nation tonight. The Badgers are 5-1 SU this year, but only 1-5 ATS. Their lone win ATS wise was against a non FBS opponent. Today will mark the first time this season the Badgers will be the listed underdog. Wisconsin is scoring points this season, as they are averaging 37.2 PPG. That average places them 16th in the nation, with much credit going to QB Scott Tolzien. Tolzien has thrown for 1,200 YDS and 7 TD's this year to balance what is already a formidable rushing attack. The Badgers are averaging 240 YPG on the ground, thanks to the 2 headed attack of John Clay and James White. The biggest concern for Wisconsin tonight is their defense, as they have allowed 57 PTS in their past 2 games combined. For the Badgers to win this game, their defense will have to play their best game of the year. The Badgers are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 conference games. Wisconsin is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games in October. The Badgers are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 home games against a team with a winning road record.

Badgers are 9-4-1 ATS last 14 games as a home underdog.
Over is 8-2 last 10 home games against a team with a winning road record.

Key Injuries - LB Chris Borland (shoulder) is out.

                              Projected Score: 24
