NCAAF Opening Line Report: Week 5

The Red River Rivalry was bound to take a step back this year anyway, right? We all knew that a month ago, what with Colt McCoy and Sam Bradford in the NFL, and neither team at the talent level that’s made them national-title contenders for several years running.

All that said, though, it’s still a huge regional rivalry, and the neutral site, equipped with national television, always adds intrigue to this matchup.

And then, Texas went out and got drilled by UCLA, 34-12.

“This one is embarrassing for me,” Texas coach Mack Brown said. "As a head coach, I’m responsible for everyone in this program -- from the trainers, to the managers, to the walk-ons, to the kids, to the coaches -- everybody. It was not fair to Texas fans. It was not fair to the players. I’ve got to do a better job.”

Well, Mack, until you figure things out, the oddsmakers aren’t going to take you at your word. Because the consensus early on, is that Oklahoma should be a 4-point favorite for this game in Dallas.

“I don’t know what that was against UCLA,” said John Avello, of the Wynn Hotel Sportsbook. “That wasn’t Texas football. To play that way, against that team, at home? Not much more you can say about them.”

Chances are, the public will agree, too. While Oklahoma struggled somewhat vs. Cincinnati, at least the Sooners won, 31-29, and kept their perfect season alive.

“Yeah, I don’t want to make it sound like Oklahoma is great, either,” Avello said. “Neither team is playing all that well, let’s face it. But we’ll go with Oklahoma and more than the 3 based on what happened this past week.”

And while we don’t want to beat a dead horse -- or a Longhorn in this instance -- Texas had five turnovers and nine penalties vs. the Bruins.

“You can’t have that many mistakes when you’re doing my job,” Brown said. “We just looked awful.”

But don’t worry, Mack, you are not alone. Let’s take a look at some other marquee games this week, some involving teams that also did not show up last week:

Notre Dame (Pick) at Boston College

“Someone has to win this one. But there are differences here,” Avello said. “BC hasn’t beaten anyone big, and Virginia Tech completely stuffed them. BC looked terrible (Saturday). Notre Dame, well the record isn’t there, but they could’ve won the Michigan and Michigan State games, and really, Stanford was a tough chore for them to begin with (on Saturday). It’s going to take some time, but they are getting there. It just doesn’t show yet. Maybe that begins here for Notre Dame.”

Florida (+7) at Alabama

“Florida can win this one, and has shown very well lately,” said Pete Korner of the Sports Club in Las Vegas. “Alabama, with a close call (Saturday), well, they didn’t play all that well, did they? But they’re still worthy of a touchdown here. Expect a lot of scoring and an entertaining game. We wanted it at 7. We figured if we go any lower, the wiseguys would jump on Alabama. And anything over 7, well, that would be a real good buy for Florida bettors.”

Tennessee (+13.5) at LSU

“LSU is a tough team to lay heavy points with, because they just don’t score enough,” Avello said. “They usually have to rely on their defense to provide some scoring. This is a tough one, but Tennessee, well, they’ve just been awful. The performance against UAB was a nightmare.”

Penn State (+6) at Iowa

“Iowa can blow these guys out,” Korner said. “I’m just not that high on Penn State, but obviously, they have the ability to go out and win the game, so you want to respect that. We just didn’t want to go too low with a good team at home.”

Virginia Tech (-3) at N.C. State

“Virginia Tech is playing better. They’ve certainly recovered from the loss to James Madison, and when you look back at the opener, they easily could have beaten Boise,” Avello said. “The defense has turned it around. At the same time, though, N.C. State has been very impressive. To take care of Cincinnati and Georgia Tech like that, and the last one was on the road, they’ve got it together. Close game.”

Wisconsin (-1) at Michigan State

“There’s nothing wrong with what Michigan State has done, with the exception that the schedule has been a little soft,” Avello said. “I think Wisconsin is the better team here, and even though it’s a tough Big Ten road game, we believe Wisconsin and the 1 is the right fit. We’ll see how good Wisconsin is in this spot.”

Texas A&M (+3) at Oklahoma State

“Not a lot of the public knows a lot about these two teams,” Korner said. “But it’s a marquee game in the Big 12, because it’s on a Thursday. This is your basic home-field field goal here, because the teams are so even.”

Miami (-3) at Clemson

“Miami showed really well vs. Pitt, obviously,” Korner said. “So, we placed it on a key number for the road team, and we’ll see where it goes. Both teams are good, but Miami is better. On a neutral field, they’d be favored by a touchdown.”

Stanford (+7) at Oregon

“Great game,” Korner said. “Oregon didn’t get there -- if you know what I mean -- vs. Arizona State, which was good for the books. Because of that -- remember, the public has a short memory, and people are going to remember that Oregon didn’t cover last week -- I’d expect to see some Stanford money here.”

Texas A&M Aggies AT Oklahoma St. Cowboys [ESPN | 7:45 PM ET]

AGGIES: Texas AM has been waiting for this game for quite some time. The Aggies have revenge on their minds, after losing at home last season 31-36 to Oklahoma St. in a very memorable game. Texas AM rolls into tonight's contest undefeated at 3-0 SU and 2-1 ATS. The Aggies are a very talented team in their own right, as they've been a double digit favorite in each game they've played this season. Tonight will represent the 1st road game of the year, and it will come in a hostile environment. The Aggies have a prolific offense in their own right, as they have the 12th best scoring offense in the nation at 41 PPG. QB Jerrod Johnson is easily one of the most dynamic QB's in the nation, and he is the clear leader of this team. Johnson has thrown for 865 YDS and 7 TD's this season, and is expected to challenge for Offensive Player of the Year in the Big 12. Johnson is coming off a terrible game against FIU, where he threw 4 INT's. Defensively, the Aggies have only allowed 14.3 PPG this season. FIU was the only team to score more than 16 PTS against the Aggies. Texas AM will have to have an inspired defensive effort if they are to exact their revenge in a hostile environment.

COWBOYS: (-3.5, O/U 68) With a win tonight, it's quite likely that Oklahoma St. will find themselves in the national rankings. The Cowboys are a perfect 3-0 SU this year, with all 3 games coming at home. Oklahoma St. has played to the over in each game this season, with much credit going to their offense. The Cowboys offense is averaging 57 PPG this season, 2nd most in the nation. QB Brandon Weeden has thrown for 975 YDS this season, including 11 TD's. WR Justin Blackmon has been the recipient of 8 of those TD's, at least 2 in each game this season. Showing how well rounded this Cowboys offense has been this year is the play of RB Kendall Hunter. Despite all the gaudy passing numbers, Hunter has rushed for 473 YDS with 6 TD's this year. For Oklahoma St. to become a force on the national stage, they will have to improve defensively. The Cowboys allow 27.7 PPG this year, placing them in the bottom third in the nation. The Cowboys nearly lost at home to Troy this year, as they gave up 38 PTS.

What Bettors Need to Know

Texas A&M at Oklahoma State (-3, 66)

Two undefeated but unproven teams collide Thursday, when Texas A&M visits Oklahoma State in a primetime Big 12 showdown on ESPN.

Neither the Cowboys (3-0) nor the Aggies (3-0) have played an opponent of any significance. Oklahoma State has compiled fat offensive numbers … against the defenses of Washington State, Troy and Tulsa. A&M is among the nation’s top-ranked defenses … after slowing down the vaunted offenses of Stephen F. Austin, Louisiana Tech and Florida International.

Talk about meaningless statistics.

The Cowboys, who returned just eight starters, were picked to finish near the bottom of the Big 12 South. The Aggies, who returned 16 starters, are expected to challenge Oklahoma and Texas.

Oklahoma State has won the past two meetings with the Aggies by average score of 46-29. But the Cowboys have never beaten A&M three straight games.

THE LINE

Oddsmakers certainly don’t believe either team has a significant advantage. They opened the Cowboys as 3.5-point home favorites. It quickly dropped to -3, as the half-point hook seems valuable in what’s expected to be a close game that easily could be decided by a field goal.

Since 2000, Texas A&M is 9-22 ATS as a road dog, Oklahoma State is 20-11 ATS as a home favorite the past 10 seasons.

THE TOTAL

The total started popping up as high as 68 at some books. It had dropped slightly, to around 66.5, as of Wednesday morning.

The last three meetings have averaged a combined 66 points, including last year’s 36-31 Oklahoma State victory.

The Cowboys are averaging 59 points per game and allowing 27.67. A&M is averaging 41 points per game and is allowing 14.33. But, again, those stats have come against weak competition.

The over is 20-6-1 in the Aggies last 27 games as a road underdog.

Weather is not forecast to play a role.

INJURIES

A&M star linebacker/defensive end Von Miller, who led the nation in sacks last season, has been battling ankle injuries and has yet to record a sack. Miller will play, but is not expected to be at 100 percent.

Oklahoma State starting defensive tackle Shane Jarka has missed the last two games and is questionable against A&M.

QUARTERBACK

Oklahoma State first-year starter Brandon Weeden has been spectacular. The 6-4, 224-pound pocket passer is completing 73 percent of his attempts with 11 touchdowns and just three interceptions. Thursday’s game is the biggest start of his career, but the 26-year-old ex-minor league baseball player has shown no signs of cracking so far.

A&M’s Jerrod Johnson was picked as the Big 12 preseason offensive player of the year. Now in his third season, Johnson has developed into one of the nation’s best dual-threat QBs. He did, however, struggle against Florida International, completing just 11 of 31 passes and throwing four interceptions. There was some concern that his surgically-repaired shoulder was bothering him, but coach Mike Sherman denied those rumors this week.

BATTLE IN THE TRENCHES

Texas A&M has struggled protecting Johnson this season. The Aggies have surrendered 3.33 sacks per game (111th in the nation).

Oklahoma State’s defense has been average at getting to the quarterback with two sacks per game. But how much do you need to blitz in the second half of blowouts like the Cowboys have experienced?

Noting the Aggies’ protection struggles, expect OSU to bring more pressure Thursday.

The Cowboys’ O-line also will be tested, especially when trying to open holes for playmaking running back Kendall Hunter. A Heisman candidate entering last season, Hunter battled through an injury-played junior season. He appears to be back at full strength this season and is averaging 7.9 yards per carry.
A&M counters with the nation’s fourth-ranked run defense and are allowing only 69 yards on the ground.

Hunter did not play against the A&M game last season. The Aggies held him to 90 yards in 2008.

BYU Cougars AT Utah St. Aggies [ESPN | 8:00 PM ET]

COUGARS: (-5, O/U 51.5) BYU has already seen their season slip away, a shock considering just how consistent this program has been through the years. The Cougars have been bad on both sides of the ball, and as a result have lost their past 3 games SU my multiple TD's. This Cougars offense is only averaging 15 PPG, the 5th worst in the nation. For a team with so many problems and question marks, the last thing this team needs is to play on a short week. BYU typically struggles in October, going 1-8 ATS in their past 9 October games. The Cougars also traditionally sruggle against the WAC, going 2-7 ATS in their past 9 matchups with the conference. This contest against Utah St. marks the final game before Mountain West Conference play for BYU. Considering this is their final year in the conference, the Cougars are likely to get their opponents best shot. Because of their struggling offense, the Cougars have played to the Under in each game this season.

Cougars are 7-3 ATS last 10 games following a double-digit loss at home.
Over is 8-2 last 10 road games against a team with a losing home record.

Key Injuries - LB Brandon Ogletree (knee) is questionable.

AGGIES: Utah St. very well could be the best 1-3 SU team you've never heard of. The Aggies are a dangerous group that play a unique brand of offensive football. In their season opener, they nearly upset Oklahoma as 34 point underdogs. Since that Week 1 ATS win, the Aggies have failed to win a game ATS since. Utah St. played their worst game of the season last week on the road against San Diego St, ultimately losing 7-41 SU. The Aggies typically playing Mountain West conference teams tough, as they are 6-2 ATS in their past 8 MWC matchups. The Aggies have moved the ball at will this year, yet are only averaging 23.3 PPG. QB Diondre Borel is the playmaker and leader of this Aggies team, as he makes plays with both his arm and feet. Borel didn't score a TD in his last game against the Aztecs, so one can only assume he will bounceback against BYU. The Utah St. defense has given up 41 PTS in each of their past 2 games, a trend that must change quickly. The Aggies are giving up 32.5 PPG this year, the 19th worst in the nation. Utah St. has played BYU tough the past 2 seasons, winning each contest ATS as double digit underdogs.

Aggies are 6-2 ATS last 8 games against the MWC.
Under is 7-1-1 last 9 games in October.

Why BYU will cover

The Cougars are on a three-game losing streak, however, those teams (Air Force, Florida State, and Nevada) have a combined record of 10-2. After going through such a tough gauntlet, Utah State provides a bit of drop off in talent. The added motivation of this being a game on ESPN and a “must win” will ensure that BYU will bring its A-game.

Quarterback Jake Heaps will also be a key factor and could have a breakthrough game Friday night. The true freshman was a five-star QB in high school and he is already showing upperclassmen maturity by putting last week's loss on his shoulders.

"The only finger you can point is at me,” Heaps told the media. “I had opportunities and plays I could make and throws I just didn’t make. Offensively we battled and made some great plays. We drove the field and had our way with the defense but just couldn’t finish."

On the defensive side, BYU proved in the Nevada game that it can handle someone like Utah State QB Diondre Borel. The Cougars stop unit managed to keep fleet-footed QB Colin Kaepernick to under 100 yards in rushing and held the country’s fourth-ranked offense to their lowest point total of the season.

History is also on the Cougars’ side with BYU riding a 10-game winning streak in this series.

Why Utah State will cover

The Aggies are coming off of two poor performances in which they seemed to lack motivation and focus. Last week against San Diego State, they gave up 21 points in the first quarter which set the tone for the rest of the game.

So with all this negativity why will Utah State cover? Well, it seems like this is a team that will play its best when under the spotlight. Utah State proved it against Oklahoma in its season opener. As 34-point road underdogs, the Aggies nearly beat the Sooners straight up, losing 31-24. Diondre Borel was a key factor in that game throwing for 341 yards and two TDs.

This is the second time in two years that ESPN will be visiting Logan, Utah (the first being last year's game against Boise) and backers can expect to see more of the team that played in Norman rather than the one they have watched in the last two weeks.

Despite losing 10 straight games against BYU, Utah State kept the game close last year and was trailing just 21-17 in the fourth quarter. It’s the last year for Borel and several other starters and they will be aiming to impress against their instate rivals.

Notes and trends

The line opened up at -6.5 in favor of BYU but it has now moved to -4.5 at most books, despite the fact that popular opinion is on the Cougars. Utah State is 5-2-1 ATS in the last eight games in this series. However, this is the lowest line on record in this series. In the last three years, BYU has been favored by an average of 25 points.

The total sits at 51.5 and has seen only slight movement. All four BYU games have gone under the total this year. The under has also hit for three straight years in this series

The forecast calls for partly cloudy skies by kickoff with lows in the 40s.
