            Tuesday, May 4

Lakers won four of five vs Utah this season; LA's Game 1 win was first series meeting this year that went over. Lakers shot 53% in first game, as Bryant was 12-19 from floor, and Gasol blocked five shots. Lakers are 4-0 in playoffs at home, winning by 8-3-24-5 points. Utah lost three of its four playoff road games. Boozer was 9-17 from floor in Game 1 but didn't get to foul line. Jazz has get to foul line more than 21 times.

Orlando won first three meetings vs Hawks this year by 17-32-18, then lost by hoop in Atlanta March 24. All four games stayed under the total. Magic swept Bobcats in first series, could be little rusty playing against Atlanta team that was only 7-game winner in first round- they played on Sunday, so they're running on adrenaline. Hawks lost two of three road games in first round against Milwaukee.

Atlanta Hawks at Orlando Magic [TNT | 8:00 PM ET]

Hawks: Atlanta believed they were one of the best teams in the East all season long. The Hawks are breathing a big sigh of relief, considering they were pushed to 7 games by the Bucks. Atlanta faced elimination twice against the Bucks, and the Hawks are now saying that was a good thing for them moving forward. Atlanta is a very talented team, and they appear to be more focused than ever thanks to Milwaukee. Atlanta lost 3 of their 4 games SU and ATS to the Magic this year, by a combined 67 PTS. Atlanta is hoping their new-found focus will make them more competitive in this series. G Joe Johnson leads the Hawks in scoring this postseason, averaging 20.9 PPG. C Al Horford is averaging 15.6 PPG and nearly 10 RPG this postseason, and will have the enviable task of matching up with Dwight Howard. Atlanta has 5 players averaging at least 11 PPG this postseason, proving just how balanced this offense really is. Atlanta is 57-32 SU and 52-37 ATS overall this season. Atlanta is 20-24 SU and 23-20-1 ATS on the road this season. The Hawks are 3-0 ATS as a road underdog between 6.5 and 9 PTS this season. C Dwight Howard has been in foul trouble so far this postseason, yet he is anxious to play against his hometown team.

Hawks are 5-0 ATS last 5 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.
Over is 7-1 last 8 games as a road underdog.

                            Key Injuries - None.

Magic (-9, O/U 192): Orlando feels like they are just starting the playoffs again, as they've been off for a full 8 days. The Magic swept the Bobcats, yet had to wait for the Hawks to get past the Bucks in 7 games. Coach Van Gundy has his work cut out for him, as he looks to keep his team motivated during their layoff. The Magic have dominated the Hawks this season, going 3-1 both SU and ATS against them. Orlando has been playing great defense, as they have held their opposition to 90 PTS or fewer in each of their past 4 games. Their defensive effort along with a sound offense is a big reason why they've won their past 10 games entering tonight. Orlando is 63-23 SU and 49-35-2 ATS overall this season. The Magic haven't played at home in 13 days, yet they are 36-7 SU and 24-17-2 ATS in home games this season. The Magic are 43-30 ATS as the listed favorite this season. PG Jameer Nelson is averaging 23.8 PPG so far this postseason, easily leading the Magic.

Under is 5-0 last 5 vs. a team with a winning SU record.

Key Injuries - G Jameer Nelson (stomach) is probable.
G Mickael Pietrus (ankle) is questionable.

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 97

Utah Jazz at Los Angeles Lakers [TNT | 10:30 PM ET]

Jazz: Utah played the Lakers tough in Game 1, and they had a chance to steal not only the game but also home court advantage. The Jazz have struggled mightily at the Staples Center, so many Utah fans feel they missed their golden opportunity. Utah had great balance offensively in Game 1, as they had 5 players score at least 14 PTS. PG Deron Williams was his usual spectacular self, as he led the Jazz with 24 PTS and 8 assists. F Carlos Boozer had 18 PTS and 12 rebounds in Game 1, yet didn't attempt a single free throw. Utah only made 5 of their 18 three point attempts in Game 1, a stat they must improve on to win this series. The Jazz are 57-32 SU and 54-32-3 ATS overall this season. The Jazz are 22-23 SU and 25-19-1 ATS on the road this season. Utah is 14-12 ATS as the listed underdog this season, including 5-5 ATS as a road underdog between 3.5 and 6 PTS. Utah is an impressive 28-18 ATS this year against teams with a winning record. The Jazz are 31-20 ATS this season against teams that are averaging more than 99 PPG.

Jazz are 21-6 ATS last 27 games following a SU loss.
Over is 5-0 last 5 road games vs. a team with a winning home record.

Key Injuries - G Deron Williams (ankle) is probable.
F Andrei Kirilenko (calf) is questionable.

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 89

Lakers (-6, O/U 199.5): Los Angeles got out to a quick start in Game 1, as they led 30-23 at the end of the 1st Quarter. The Jazz were a tough competitor though, as they played the Lakers close nearly the entire game. The Lakers actually lost their lead in the final quarter, yet used G Kobe Bryant's brilliance to win Game 1. Bryant finished with 31 PTS, shooting an efficient 12 of 19 from the field. F Pau Gasol also had a great game, as he had 25 PTS and 12 rebounds. Gasol and Bryant combined to go a perfect 14 of 14 from the free throw line in Game 1. The Lakers are 5-2 SU so far during the playoffs, yet they are only 3-4 ATS in the same span. C Andrew Bynum is averaging 11.4 PPG and nearly 10 RPG this postseason, despite battling injury concerns. Bynum was limited to only 24 minutes played in Game 1. Los Angeles is 62-27 SU and 36-50-3 ATS overall this season. The Lakers are 38-7 SU and 18-26-1 ATS in home games this season. Los Angeles is only 20-28 ATS against teams with a winning SU record this year.

Lakers are 3-7 ATS last 10 games vs. a team with a winning SU record.
Under is 12-5 last 17 games as a home favorite.

Key Injuries - C Andrew Bynum (knee) is probable.
G Sasha Vujacic (ankle) is doubtful.

PROJECTED SCORE: 100 (UNDER - Total of the Day)

                              Tuesday's six-pack

Six things I want to do on my next trip to Las Vegas

-- Take the monorail between casinos; haven't done that yet; it looks kind of fun.

-- Go to Mirage and have lunch at Carnegie Deli, where they've got the biggest sandwiches you've ever seen.

-- Hang out by the pool for an afternoon. Haven't done that yet.

-- $3 blackjack at Hooters casino. Can't beat $3 blackjack for fun.

-- Pizza at the back of O'Shea's casino; its pretty good pizza.

-- There is a bar on top of Mandalay Bay that has an amazing view of the Strip at night; worth the hike over there to see it.

Tuesday's List of 13: On leadoff hitters and 2010's first debasco

                              13) Home runs are down for obvious reasons, in the post-steroids era, so teams need to find different ways to score runs, but there aren't a lot of real fast players in the big leagues anymore. Lack of speed, lack of power; it is no wonder some teams have trouble scoring runs.

                              12) In the 70's/80's, players like Lou Brock, Tim Raines, Vince Coleman, Bert Campaneris and Ron Leflore were dominant offensive players who controlled the game with their feet. How many guys like that are in the game today? Jacoby Ellsbury/Michael Bourn led their league in stolen bases LY; would you consider them to be dominant players? Me either.

                              11) Milwaukee just finished a four-game series in San Diego where they scored a total of two runs and got shut out three times. Brewers have a couple of baseball's best power hitters, Braun and Fielder, and they get shut out three times in four games? Leadoff hitter Weeks was 3-17 in the series, hitting a HR for one of the Brewer runs (pitcher Gallardo also hit a homer for the other Milwaukee run in their series).

                              10) Then there are the Mets, who have the one player who resembles the prototypical leadoff hitter-- Jose Reyes. These geniuses bat Reyes third to compensate for Carlos Beltran's injury; problem is, Reyes is a leadoff hitter, not a #3 hitter; he's batting .226 with a .277 on-base percentage, as he tries to muscle up but hits popup after popup. Very frustrating.

                              9) If Reyes did 20 pushups every time he hit a popup, his arms would look like Herschel Walker's; the Mets went on a winning streak after the lineup switch, but just because A and B both happened doesn't mean that A caused B. Mets got hot because their pitching improved, not because of anything Reyes did in the third slot.

                              8) Angel Pagan is the Mets' leadoff hitter; he of the .241 batting average and .308 on-base percentage. How can you expect to contend when you bat a stiff leadoff? Castillo bats second; he's OK, but a slap hitter. Would it be so horrible to bat Reyes-Wright-Bay 1-2-3? You think if your three best players got the most ABs, you might score more runs? Hmmmm

                              7) Things got uglier for the A's Monday night, who got two baserunners in seven innings against old friend Rich Harden, who came into the game having allowed 30 baserunners in his last 14 IP. The lineup Oakland puts on the field these days is AAA at best; no Suzuki-Crisp-Ellis; shortstop Cliff Pennington actually bats leadoff. What a nightmare.

                              6) Back when the Eldrick Woods story unfolded in December, we coined a new word: debasco, past debacle/part fiasco. Its an event that is so bad that it has a permanently negative effect on the person involved. Eldrick Woods can avoid his debasco if he resumes being a championship golfer. People get divorced all the time; not everyone screws up their career in its prime. Debascos are few and far between; we just had 2010's first one.

                              5) Tim Welsh worked on ESPN the last couple years as an analyst after he coached Providence for 10 years; he's pretty good on TV, just talks about the game, but last month he signed on to coach Hofstra for 5 years at $600,000 a year, a darned good gig. Unfortunately, Welsh got a DUI on Long Island the other night, and resigned at Hofstra Monday. Its hard to believe he'll ever coach again; hopefully, ESPN will take him back. If you are scoring at home, thats a $3,000,000 DUI, a definite debasco.

                              4) Ubaldo Jimenez is 6-0, 0.87 after striking out 13 and stroking an RBI single to right in Colorado's 5-2 win at Petco Park.

                              3) Jake Peavy threw seven shutout innings Monday night, by far his best work of the season, as White Sox beat Kansas City 5-1.

                              2) Supposedly, Rutgers will name Mike Rice Jr its new hoop coach. Not sure if Fran Fraschilla will go after the Hofstra job now.

                              1) Police arrested a naturalized US citizen from Pakistan as he tried to get on a flight to Dubai Monday; he bought the Nissan Pathfinder that was in Times Square Saturday, with explosives in the back. Good quick work by the NYPD. Lot of crazy people in this world.

                                Len's Top 5

Happy Tuesday everyone, here's my Top 5 for May 4, 2010 from Len Berman.

                                1. Quick Hits

Hold off on that coronation of King James. LeBron James and the Cavaliers are stunned at home by Boston 104-86. The series is tied at one.
Not every New Yorker wants LeBron James to bolt for the Knicks. NBA Commissioner David Stern says he hopes James stays in Cleveland.
University of Virginia lacrosse player George Huguely has been charged with murdering a fellow student on the women's lacrosse team.
Hofstra basketball coach Tim Welsh resigns having never coached a game there. He was arrested the other day for D.U.I.
Wow, they're tough in Philly. A fan ran onto the field at the Phillies game last night, and he was brought down with a Taser gun. What, a crossbow wasn't available?

                                2. The Police Blotter

If it weren't for the police, what would we have to report about in sports? First the shocker about the Virginia lacrosse player, then the Tim Welsh cautionary tale at Hofstra. And look at some other headlines today. Former NFL running back Corey Dillon was arrested on suspicion of assaulting his wife. The younger brother of Utah Jazz star Carlos Boozer, Iowa State reserve guard Charles Boozer, was arrested after a woman told police he slapped and kicked her. And if you haven't had enough, read the next item about one of your favorite perps. In fact all of today's Top 5 items deal with "men behaving badly." What a sad commentary.

                                3. Update

Time for a Plaxico Burress update as he serves his jail sentence for shooting himself in the foot. According to the New York Post he lost his recess privileges for one month because he lied to a prison guard about his cell phone. He was even barred from using his phone for a whole week. I wonder if he was allowed to keep his video games and cappuccino machine?

                                4. Way To Go Coach

Another "leader of men." Actually this guy is the coach of a high school girl's flag football team......for now. During a game in Florida, when a player on the other team made an interception and headed for the end zone, the coach reached out and pulled the girl's flag. The ref saw it, and awarded the girl a touchdown. But here's the good part, a fan got a great picture of it, and the opposing coach sent it to the newspaper. Check it out. (Thanks to James O'Brien)

The offended coach said maybe the guy should be suspended. Ya think?

                                5. Cheers!

Hey, what's the big deal? The hockey team in Saskatchewan decided to celebrate in the locker room so they hoisted a couple of brews. The video wound up on YouTube. Turns out the players were 10-years old. They suspended a couple of the so-called adults in charge. Now that's sports!

Happy Birthday: ESPN sideline reporter, and Dancing With the Stars contestant, Erin Andrews. 32
                                Bonus Birthday: 'N Sync's Lance Bass. 31.

Today in Sports: The world's largest racetrack opened in New York. Belmont. 1905.
Bonus Event: Al Capone began his prison sentence in Atlanta for tax evasion. 1932.
