    Daily Sports Roundup: May 4

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Phillies play host to the Cardinals, while the Sharks battle the Red Wings, and the Lakers play Game 2 against the Jazz.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up a pair of postseason matchups on Tuesday, with Utah at the Lakers and Atlanta at Orlando. Los Angeles rolled to a 104-99 win over the Jazz in the first game of their Western Conference semifinal series on Sunday, getting 31 points from Kobe Bryant and 25 points from Pau Gasol in the win. Deron Williams had a team-high 24 points in a losing cause for Utah. The Hawks advanced to the second round with a 95-74 drubbing of the Bucks in Game 7 of their Eastern Conference first-round series on Sunday. Al Horford had 16 points and 15 rebounds for Atlanta in that win, while Jamal Crawford scored 22 points.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The lineup for the American League on Tuesday has Toronto at Cleveland, Baltimore at the Yankees, the Angels at Boston, Detroit at Minnesota, Kansas City at the White Sox, Texas at Oakland, and Tampa Bay at Seattle. James Shields (3-0, 3.38 ERA) will take on Jason Vargas (2-1, 3.60 ERA) in that Rays/Mariners matchup. Righthander Shields dominated the Athletics in his last trip to the mound, surrendering just one earned run on six hits over seven innings while fanning 12. Lefthander Vargas took a no-decision against the White Sox in his last start, giving up two earned runs on four hits over his 6 2-3 innings of work.

Over in the National League on Tuesday it'll be the Cubs at Pittsburgh, Atlanta at Washington, the Mets at Cincinnati, San Francisco at Florida, Arizona at Houston, Colorado at San Diego, Milwaukee at the Dodgers, and St. Louis at Philadelphia. The Cardinals/Phillies matchup will have Adam Wainwright (4-1, 2.13 ERA) taking on Cole Hamels (2-2, 5.28 ERA). Righthander Wainwright beat the Braves in his last trip to the mound, giving up three earned runs on six hits over his six innings of work. Lefthander Hamels got a no-decision against the Giants last time out after he allowed four earned runs over six innings pitched.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are two games on the NHL's playoff schedule for Tuesday, with San Jose at Detroit and Pittsburgh at Montreal. The Sharks took a 2-0 lead in their Western Conference semifinal series with a 4-3 home win over the Red Wings on Sunday night. Joe Thornton had the winner for San Jose in that game, while Joe Pavelski had a three-point night. The Canadiens tied up their Eastern Conference semifinal set with a 3-1 win in Pittsburgh on Sunday afternoon. Michael Cammalleri scored twice for Montreal in that win, while Jaroslav Halak stopped 38 of the 39 Penguins shots. Sidney Crosby was held off the scoresheet.

Bettor's best friend: Tuesday's wagering tips

Lines to keep an eye on

The total in the Hawks-Magic game has been bet down since its opener of 193.5. Most shops are currently offering 192. The last five games between these teams have gone under. Orlando opened as a 8-point home favorite but now that number has climbed to 9.

The total in the Reds-Cardinals game has been bumped a half run at most shops since opening and now stands at 8.5.

The Nationals surfaced as a -125 home favorite over Atlanta but that number can now be found as low as -102 in some markets.

An opening total of 9.5 for the Royals-White Sox game has dropped a half run and now sits at 9.

      Who’s hot

The Magic have covered the number in three straight and are 9-1 ATS over a 10-game span.

St. Louis has taken three in a row and is 8-2 in the last 10.

The Sharks have won five straight games and are 8-2 in the last 10.

      Who’s not

Los Angeles is 3-7 ATS in its last 10 games.

The Angels have dropped four consecutive games.

Houston is 0-6 SU in its last six and 3-7 over a 10-game stretch.

      Key stat

1-10 – Record for the Hawks in 11 road playoff games over the last 3 seasons. Atlanta has been defeated by an average margin of 19.8 ppg in those games.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Giants closer Brian Wilson has been unavailable for the last three games with a strained groin. Wilson last pitched on Wednesday, when he blew a save in a 7-6 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. The Jints’ bullpen has been solid this season, but as good as the starters have been bettors might want to look toward a 5-inning line when backing the team without a closer.

      Games of the Day

Utah Jazz at Los Angeles Lakers (-6, 199.5)

Pittsburgh Penguins at Montreal Canadiens (+140, 5.5)

      Notable quotable

"I'm not doing none of that stuff. I turned my phones off. You want to get in contact with me, you better scream through the TV and hope I hear you."

-- Magic center Dwight Howard said of seeing his friends and family while in his home town of Atlanta for the series against the Hawks.

      Tips and notes

      - Through 10 home games last season, the Yankees had played to an 8-2 over/under mark. This season balls aren’t flying out of New York as rapidly as the over/under is 5-5. Andy Pettitte said that he thinks something is different this year and that when the wind “is blowing in from left that ball really gets held up.” The cold weather could also have something to do with it. It’s been 62 degrees or colder in six of the Yankees first 10 home games this season.

      - Tim Lincecum’s last start was blown in the ninth inning by closer Brian Wilson. Lincecum had struck out 11 on 106 pitches but manager Bruce Bochy elected to pull him after he walked a batter citing that his righty showed signs of tiring. The Freak said it would have been “ideal” to finish the game and he still felt “strong” when he got yanked. Bettors shouldn’t be forced to play Lincecum for a 5-inning play at a higher price because it’s doubtful Bochy will pull his ace in a tight situation late in the game again.

      - The Magic might not have one of its 3-point sharpshooters available to come off the bench Tuesday. Backup forward Mikael Pietrus sprained his ankle in Sunday's practice and was seen in a protective boot while leaving the arena. Orlando lives and dies by the 3-point shot and Pietrus is one of its weapons in that arsenal. Pietrus connected on 10-of-20 3-pointers in the Charlotte series – the Magic made a total of 42 three bombs as a team.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta Hawks at Orlando Magic (-9, 192)

With the Magic sweeping Charlotte in four games, the team hasn’t played competitive basketball in eight days.

"It can go against you or it can help you," Hawks coach Mike Woodson said of the layoff. "If your team is banged up, they had a good week to heal some wounds. Sometimes layoffs can hurt you as well."

Not only has Orlando not played a game in more than a week, the team hasn’t stepped into Amway Arena with anything on the line but practice in 13 days.

"We're pretty tired of that," Vince Carter said. "A real game will be a welcome site."

All the time off adds up to the Magic coming out a little rusty in this playoff series opener. The team lives and dies by the 3-pointer and having an opponent’s hand in your face is much different than your teammate’s during practice.

Atlanta may have figured out the key to success during the last two games against the Bucks – defense. The Hawks held Milwaukee to 69 and 74 points while wrapping up the series.

Hotlanta has played to the under in three straight and the last five meetings between these two went under by an average of 17.2 points per game. Expect the streaks to extend tonight.

          Pick: Under

Game of the day: Jazz at Lakers
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Utah Jazz at Los Angeles Lakers (-6, 199.5)

            Los Angeles leads series 1-0.

Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals between the Lakers and the Jazz tips off at the Staples Center in Los Angeles Tuesday. Los Angeles is up 1-0 in the series on the heels of Sunday’s 104-99 over Utah.

            OK Kobe

Kobe Bryant is playing and feeling better. He was highly efficient, 12-for-19 from the field and 7-for-7 from the line in Sunday’s squeaker over the Jazz.

More important, Bryant made a statement with a 13-point fourth quarter when the Lakers had to rally to beat Utah after entering the final period with an eight-point lead.

After failing to draw a single free-throw attempt in the first three quarters, Bryant finished with 31 points and reported in his postgame news conference that his sore right knee is improved.

"I was able to move around," Bryant said, noting that the game Sunday afternoon came after the Lakers played Game 6 in Oklahoma City Friday night. "It's encouraging for me."

The Lakers have an obvious advantage in talent over the Utah Jazz in this Western Conference semifinal, and Bryant knows it.

"We're big, too. So we've had mismatches all over the floor, including with Ron (Artest). So we just have to be patient and try not to overdo it."

            15 and counting

Sunday’s 5-point setback signaled the 15th loss in a row at Staples Center for the Jazz, including eight in the regular season and seven in the playoffs. The margin of defeat was the shortest during this span.

The absence of Mehmet Okur and Andrei Kirilenko hurt them visibly, especially with the Lakers' size advantage inside. Kyrylo Fesenko was a total zero.

"We've got to work with what we've got," Utah forward Carlos Boozer told reporters. "That's just the bottom line, there's no secret to it. They've got more big guys that we have, so we've got to do what we've got to do. No excuses.

"We know we're David and we know they're Goliath. All we can do is give it everything we've got and go from there."

During the current 15-game slide at Staples, Utah has surrendered more than 100 points the last 14 games in a row.

Even scarier is Utah’s 3-33 SU and 11-24 ATS mark on the playoff road in games in which it has allowed more than 100 points since 1991.

            Purple passive

Taking a cue from the manic fans in Oklahoma City, Los Angeles handed out thousands of white T-shirts in an attempt at a “whiteout” crowd to go with the Lakers’ Sunday white uniforms.

It didn’t work as the majority of fans didn’t bother to put on the shirts, which prompted one fan in attendance to comment, “What a shame. Imagine if our fans would actually gave a s**t.”

            Zen master

Along with the Bulls in Michael Jordan’s glory days, the Lakers have excelled with Phil Jackson in the sidelines during the NBA playoffs.

The owner of a 215-93 career mark in the postseason, Jackson is indeed the master at winning big games. That’s confirmed by his brilliant 45-0 series record after winning Game 1 of a playoff series.

For all of his success, though, his Lakers’ teams have not been moneymakers during the playoffs. He is 103-52 SU and 73-75-7 ATS with Los Angeles after the regular season, including 67-13 SU and 34-41-5 ATS at home.

The Lakers are 19-10 SU and 10-17-2 ATS in Game 2’s under Jackson.

            Stat of the game

Utah is 22-3 SU and 21-4 ATS this season in games off a loss when facing a non-division opponent.

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Jose Sharks at Detroit Red Wings (-165, 5.5)

Most hockey fans expected the perennially, underachieving playoff Sharks to lose at least one of the first two games in this series.

But perhaps this is the season the Stanley Cup knows its way to San Jose. The Sharks took the first two games of the series with 4-3 decisions but now the match heads to Hockey Town.

"It'll be nice to get home ice again," Nicklas Lidstrom said. "We're down 2-0 in this series, but we're heading home. It's going to be an important Game 3 coming up in Detroit. We're confident playing at home, but playoffs is different than the regular season.”

The Red Wings lost two of three home games in the first-round series versus Phoenix but went 25-10-6 at Joe Louis Arena during the regular season.

Detroit is hoping to get the same kind of love from the officials on their home ice as San Jose did at the Shark Tank. The Sharks were afforded 16 power-play opportunities during the first two games while the Wings only had nine.

Look for the powers-to-be to give Detroit enough of a home-rink advantage to get the team back in the series.

              Pick: Red Wings

What bettors need to know: Penguins at Canadiens
                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Penguins at Montreal Canadiens (+140, 5.5)

                Series tied 1-1

                Welcome back Halak

Montreal goaltender Jaroslav Halak returned to playoff form in Sunday’s 3-1 win over Pittsburgh in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference semifinal.

Halak, who captured the hockey world’s attention with his stellar play in the Canadiens’ first-round upset of the No. 1 Washington Capitals, gave up five goals on 20 shots before being pulled in Game 1’s 6-3 loss. However, he rebounded by making 38 saves in Game 2’s victory over the Penguins.

"I needed to be better," Halak told reporters following the win. "I knew that. I think the guys knew they needed to step up. And we did that tonight."

Sunday’s performance improves Halak’s postseason numbers to a 2.68 GAA and a .931 save percentage in eight playoff games. He’s faced an average of over 36 shots per game and seems to rise to the occasion when opponents pepper him with shots. Halak is 4-0 when facing 38 or more shots this postseason.

                Cooler heads prevail

Pittsburgh’s offense looked like it had ice water flowing through its veins in Game 1. The defending Stanley Cup champs scored six goals – including an empty netter late in the third period – on just 24 shots on goal.

But, with Montreal tightening up the blueline, the Penguins found little room to operate in Sunday’s 3-1 loss. Pittsburgh jumped out to an early one-goal lead in the first period but couldn’t solve the Habs defense for the remainder of the game. It wasn’t for a lack of effort. Pittsburgh fired 39 shots on goal, with 30 of those coming in the final two periods of the game.

"We expected games like this, where their goaltender plays well and their defence plays like they did," Penguins head coach Dan Bylsma told the media. "We have to continue to go with our game plan - it's a race to four."

While Pittsburgh’s power play dominated in Game 1, scoring four goals with the man advantage, it was locked down Sunday. Montreal killed all three of the Pens’ power-play chances and added a goal with the man advantage itself, getting a power-play score from Michael Cammalleri in the second period.

Emotions boiled over when Penguins star Sidney Crosby smashed his stick against the Canadiens goal post after a failed scoring attempt in the second period, shattering the stick into pieces and making it obvious that the Habs were getting the Pens' goat.

                The Jordan rules

Pittsburgh’s offensive stumble could have a lot to do with the injury to third-line center Jordan Staal, who suffered tendon damage on top of his left foot during Game 1 of this conference semifinal.

Staal, a towering grinder who was key in last year’s Stanley Cup run, underwent surgery Friday and is currently listed as day-to-day and is expected to return some time in the postseason.

"He's a guy we always look to as a two-way guy and a guy who's real tough to play against," Penguins captain Sidney Crosby told the press. "Collectively, we all have to make sure we're better. Whoever's playing in his absence, I don't think they have to put pressure on themselves to be Jordan Staal, (because) he's not an easy guy to replace."

Penguins backers are hoping that return is sooner than later. Staal had four points in the playoffs including a goal in Game 1 before colliding with Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban mid way through Friday’s game.

With Staal out of the lineup, Pittsburgh has shuffled its forward corps, putting Maxime Talbot on the third line with Matt Cooke and Tyler Kennedy. Talbot was also an important part of last year’s championship team.

"(Staal) is obviously someone really hard to replace," Talbot told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "I don't think you can replace a guy like that. I'll do my best to be effective and do what I can do."

Montreal is also dealing with serious injuries. Defenseman Andrei Markov is expected to miss the rest of the postseason after suffering what is being reported as a severe knee injury in Game 1. He had three assists in the playoffs

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Tigers at Minnesota Twins (-140, 10)

The Yankees are usually ahead of the curve when wheeling and dealing, especially when it comes to their farm system.

But New York might want a do-over regarding one of the moves it made this offseason. The team sent Austin Jackson to Detroit as a portion of the deal for outfielder Curtis Granderson.

Granderson (.225, 2 HR, 7 RBI) was put on the DL yesterday while Jackson is one of the best leadoff men in the league. The rookie has reached base safely in 20 consecutive games and is hitting .395 in that span.

Jackson has at least one hit during the Tigers five-game winning streak (batting .565) and the team is 9-4 this season when its centerfielder registers a multi-hit game.

This is a perfect spot for Detroit to pounce on the Joe Mauer-less Twins and position itself atop the AL Central standings.

                  Pick: Tigers

San Francisco Giants at Florida Marlins (+155, 7)

Not much has changed for the Giants since last season – stellar pitching and pathetic hitting.

San Francisco will hit the road where it went 4-5 to open the season. The first three wins of that road trip came against Houston, but the G-Men went 1-5 against L.A. and San Diego where the team was 1-for-30 with RISP.

"We have to figure out a way to get some runs," manager Bruce Bochy said.

On the recent homestand, San Francisco managed a meager 3.9 runs per game but the team only needs to score a shade over that to have success. The Giants are 12-3 this season when they score at least four runs.

San Fran may only need one or two runners to cross the plate with ace Tim Lincecum on the bump Tuesday.

Lincecum has only faced Florida once in his career. He earned the victory in that game, going 7.1 innings while giving up a pair of earned runs.

Expect the Giants offensive struggles to continue down in the Sunshine State where runs may be tough to come by for both teams in this series.

                  Pick: Under

                    This Day in Baseball
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On May 4 in Baseball History...

1943 - Baseball Commissioner Ford Frick demonstrates the revised balata ball to reporters by bouncing it on his office carpet. This ball will prove to be fifty percent livelier than the 1942 model. When introduced in games on May 9, there are six home runs hit in four doubleheaders compared with nine home runs hit with the previous ball in the first 72 games.

1946 - Washington's Cecil Travis gets six straight hits before being stopped by Cleveland's Steve Gromek. A prewar hitting star, Travis has few other starring moments as a player after suffering frozen feet during combat in Europe.

1966 - Willie Mays hits a NL record 512th HR, topping the mark of another Giant, Mel Ott, as the Giants beat the Dodgers 6-1.

1975 - The Giants beat the Astros 8-6 in the first game of a doubleheader at Candlestick Park. In the second inning, Houston's Bob Watson scores what is calculated as major league baseball's millionth run of all time. Philadelphia National Wes Fisler scored the first run on April 22, 1876.

1980 - White Sox first baseman Mike Squires catches the final inning of an 11-1 loss to the Brewers, becoming the first left-hander to catch in the majors since Dale Long in 1958.

1981 - Yankees reliever Ron Davis strikes out the last eight batters of a 4-2 win over the Angels, tying Nolan Ryan's A.L. record for consecutive strikeouts and setting a new record for consecutive strikeouts by a reliever.

1982 - Twins rookie outfielder Jim Eisenreich, who suffers from the nervous disorder Tourette's Syndrome, is forced to remove himself from a 5-3 loss to the Red Sox when he is taunted mercilessly by bleacher fans and his violent twitching becomes uncontrollable. Eisenreich, hitting .310 after making the jump from Class A ball to the major leagues, will be hospitalized on May 9 and will make several unsuccessful comeback attempts before retiring in 1984. He will return to the majors with the Royals in 1987 after finding an effective treatment for the condition.

1996 - The Rangers have a pair of one-hit wonders. Roger Pavlik one-hits the Tigers to make the Rangers the first A.L. team to pitch back-to-back one-hitters since the Washington Senators in 1917. Neither Pavlik nor his predecessor, Ken Hill, issues a walk in the one-hitters.

1997 - Detroit pitcher Willie Blair suffers a broken jaw when he is struck by a line drive off the bat of Julio Franco. The 31-year-old Blair will bounce back and double his previous career best with 16 wins.

                        Udog,

Saw your post in the other thread about helping out when needed. I remember you doing the same stuff in Katrina, and anything else you could help out with. If the world was filled with guys like you, we'd live in a damn good place. Just wanted to let you know if doesn't go unnoticed and makes me pround to know there's still guys like you around. Thanks

                          kb,

Those are damn nice words! Thank you!

Really, though, it's just neighbors helping neighbors in a tough spot. You'd be real proud of how hard people are trying around here right now. And, the clean-up hasn't even started yet. These folks will churn and burn on that action when the waters finally recede.

On my way home just now I saw that most of metro Nashville is out of gas. I'm wondering how much water there's going to be in the storage tanks at some of the low-lying gas stations. That could create major problems in the next few days.
